  • How can the voice over icon be removed?

I unfortunately followed the advice of someone who really didn't understand OSX 10.8.X and inadvertantly launched the Voice Over program. Now I can't seem to be able to clear the icon. Can anyone help?

Thanks to Zlig I was able determine that after going to System Preferences I needed to go to Accessability and from there Speakable Items and then I could switch it off. The icon went POOF! Thank you Zlig.

  • Voice-overs: How to *automatically* remove breaths, clicks; improve voice?

Hi, i edit voice-overs for tutorials (not commercials) in Audition CC 2014. I know how to manually edit out
    - breathing, inhalation (just ahead of a new sentence)
    - clicks
I've read some and tried some, but still don't know how to
    - edit out breathing *automatically*
    - edit out clicks automatically
    - do "fade out – almost silence – fade in" automatically
    - give more substance to my voice with a filter
When editing out breathing manually, usually i replace breathing by "silence" (don't simply cut it away). But sometimes i would like to replace breathing by "fade out – almost silence – fade in", which sounds more natural. I can do this manually (and assigned keys F1, F2, F3 to the three commands); but can i do "fade out – almost silence – fade in" automatically?
My initial recording is not too bad, but i want to give my voice a little more "substance". I tried the recommended "Broadcast" filter, but it sounds to flashy and aggressive. There is another filter called "Male Voice" (or some such), but it seems not to change anything.
    I also wonder: If i
    - use a filter
    - edit clicks and breathing manually,
should i apply the filter before the manual editing? I think i should, because breathing and clicks sound different after filter and shoul be judged with filter applied. But then – if i decide to remove the filter, it would be better to apply it at last.
    So here are my questions:
    - Is there a controlled way to remove breathing and clicks automatically?
    - Which filter gives my male voice more substance without "blasting"?
    - How to "fade out – almost silence – fade in" automatically?
    Thanks!

Steve, thanks for more good advice including positioning of the mic!
I am just an amateur - a text writer who was forced by ruthless customers to not just produce manuscripts, but also video tutorials, w/out knowing how to, but wishing not to sound as "garage" and "panting" as many others on YouTube (apart from "verbose"). So for my "productions", i write, speak and edit all in one.
The microphone is a USB Blue Yeti, which looks roughly like a tabletop lamp. It seems popular. I set it to one-directional recording (only front direction.) I have tried about ten different mics, including even more expensive headsets, but i get the rather most consistent results with the Yeti. I also use a windshield (got better recordings after starting to use it) and for recording, i build some kind of tent with woollen blankets on top of a table (so that i can stand upright and talk in a "muted" space). Before and while talking, i will drink buckets of warm water or herbal tea perhaps with fresh lemon, nothing cold, no coffee/black tea/dairies; i've experienced this helps. I've still to understand how to harrumph best.
On the laptop used for audio recording i can't run Audition, but i record with the freeware Audacity (is that audacious?), save as .flac and edit on a different PC in Audition.
On the expensive headset microphones i tried, i heard more breathing and – to my surprise – more up and down in volume. I have some, but less, variations in volume also with the Blue Yeti files; so sometimes in Audition i have to change a single sentence by 1,5 or 2,5 dB. I wish that could be done automatically, but perhaps it can?
Previously you also said that breathing is natural and should stay in the audio. I don't want to fully keep the breathing in – that might be ok for some emotional music or movie, but not for tutorials. But i'd prefer to lower rather than fully suppress breaths; that's why i asked for automatic "fade out – almost silence – fade in". I can do this by selecting three different bits of audio and then select three different commands (now by keyboard shortcuts). But it's too much clicking and i might simply glue silence over most of the exhaust sound.
I've also tried to wear a headphone during voice recording, closed as well as open headphones. It confused me no end, i was literally speechless (very unpro i guess). But i connect external speakers to the recording laptop and check on results immediately (and keep an eye on the volume levels in Audacity).
I will print your instructions for microphone positioning and try to follow them exactly next time. But i wasn't much off anyway.
    Thanks again!

  • How can I remove accessibility text and voice over from the logon screen?

Before I log on to my Mac, in the logon screen I get accessibility text and voice over features enabled all the time. I can remove them by pressing cmd + f5 several times until they're gone (while I'm still in the logon screen). I would like to remove them permanently so that they never appear in the logon screen.

Can you provide an example? I've been trying (for
example) "select translate(' test one', ascii(' '),
'X') from dual" with no luck.
Thank you.To replace space, you should query like this:
select translate(' test one', chr(32), 'X') from dual instead of select translate(' test one', ascii(' '), 'X') from dual Thanks,

  • Lost the voice over bt function after removing battery

I have a new Treo 800w and a new Plantronics 925 bt headset. I installed the voice over bt software, established a connection, and was able to use it to make voice calls (call john smith). I removed the battery to record serial numbers etc. When the Treo came back on, I reinstalled the voice software as advised. Now I can answer calls and talk using the headset, but I cannot get the voice commands to work again. I have not installed any third party software. Any suggestions?

Not sure why you re-installed the software again after a soft reset. Taking out the battery and re-inserting the battery is a soft reset. See the instructions in the article below for the hard reset procedure.
The program may have gotten corrupted when you installed over the top of the existing installiation.
Here is the statement from the download page regarding re-installing the patch.Effect of resets on this softwareIf you install the Voice Dialing over Bluetooth Download and perform a hard reset, you will need to re-install the Voice Dialing over Bluetooth Download.
If you install the Voice Dialing over Bluetooth Download and perform a soft reset, no action is necessary. The Voice Dialing over Bluetooth Download remains installed after a Soft Reset.
You may need to uninstall the program and re-install. The fastest way is to Hard reset the Treo and then re-install. the hard reset will erase all data on the Treo, so make sure you sync before hard resetting.
Here is the hard reset procedure for a Windows mobile Treo.

Another option is to delete the application and then re-install without doing a hard reset.

  • Voice Over, remove light static noise

    Hi All,
I am sorry if there has already been a post on this.
I'm a very new user to any form of audio editing software.
I have some small voice over files that I captured on my camcorder... I have the smallest level of noise that I would like to remove. Is this possible adn if so how do I do it? I have normalised the file.
You can only really hear the noise when you turn the volume right up.
    Thanks for any assistance.
    Regards,
    Katie

    >Ozpeter is right, but I've found that it's more efficient to highlight your section of noise in edit view, then go to Effects > Restoration > Noise Reduction. In Noise Reduction, click Capture Noise Profile and then make other adjustments as necessary.
    Hmm... that's not quite what
    I'd call efficient!
Highlight selection, and hit Alt+N. That's all there is to capturing a noise profile - simple as that. After you've done that, either hit Ctrl+A and open NR, or, just open it and select all from within it.
And if you don't like keyboard shortcuts, it's always worth remembering that in Audition, you get a lot more options from using the right mouse button. And one of these, if you highlight a selection in EV, is to be able to capture your selection as a noise profile directly from there.

  • How can I remove high-pitched distortion from voice-over?

    Hi folks,
I'm completely new to fixing audio. I am making a short film, and for a voice-over, I recently had to do an interview over the phone (the subject lives in a very remote location). Actually, I used GoToMeeting, we called into the conference call feature from our phones, and I recorded the meeting into a wmv file. Then I re-encoded it using Expression Encoder so I could pull it into Adobe Audition.
I am attaching a short phrase (extracted as a .wav file) from the interview in the hope that someone can tell me how to improve the quality of the sound. I have Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Audition, both CS6 and CC versions.
Short voice recording - Creative COW
    1. Can anyone tell me, please, how to get rid of the high-pitched "ringing" kind of distortion that we hear on each of her loudest syllables? Also, does this particular type of distortion have a name? I kept finding articles on fixing sound, but wasn't sure what I'm dealing with here, so I wasn't sure which techniques were likely to work. Tried a bunch, and the overall sound got better, but so far nothing has fixed that high-pitched distortion.
    2. After getting rid of that ringing distortion, what are your recommendations for making the voice recording sound as rich, smooth and full as possible? In real life, this woman has a BEAUTIFUL, rich voice. But the recording sounds like a flat telephone call (because it is).
    Thanks in advance,
    Mary

Well, I don't think there's any miracles to be had here.  As you say, it's a telephone call and I fear that, since phone lines filter out anything above about 4k, there's no way of replacing it.
I had a look at your file in spectral view and you can clearly see the original material going, as expected, up to about 4 kilohertz--but, above that, there's a generalised area of noise.  My suspicion--and it's only a suspicion--is that during your double conversions (to wmv then through a third party app to something else) one of them has added the extra noise as it your original was full bandwidth.
Anyhow, best I could do was use the Marquee tool in Spectral View, draw a rectangle around the upper area (you can see a clear boundary between the programme content and the random extra frequencies) then just delete everything above just over 4 khz then delete.
As for making a phone call sound full and rich, if there was a way to do it, when I was working in TV we could have saved hundreds of thousands a year by using phones instead of far more expensive circuits!

  • Removing echo from voice over

Hi - we recorded some voice over in a hotel room whilst on the road and it has a pretty bad echo on it. Sounds like we recorded in the bathroom. Does anyone have some suggestions to reducing this echo? any help much appreciated. thanks!
    michael

The echo or reverberation of the room is usually quieter than the direct sound,
so sometimes using an expander or noise gate will help.
If the recording was done in stereo (like the camera's built-in mics, for example),
you can get rid of some of the ambience by mixing left and right together as mono.
    Finally, when shooting, wear headphones.
Do a test shot, play it back and listen.
If the sound is too roomy, move the mic closer to the talent.
    Good luck!
    Les

  • IPhone 4s voice over locked phone

Hi does anyone know how to unlock the phone as it's saying when I enter my password that it's incorrect as the voice over is locking the keys some how? Any ideas please

With voice over you highlight whater you are trying to select and then double tap anwhere on the screen to select.
So for your password of 1234 you have to
"highlight 1, then double tap the screen, Highlight 2, the double tap the screen,... etc."
In order to remove the only option i know of is to reset your phone.
    1.     In order to do so,  highlight "setting"
Double tap screen to go into settings
    2.      use 3 fingers to (swipe) scroll of down
    3.     highlight reset, then double tap on the screen
    4.     From there you can follow instructions to reset your phone.
You dont lose any data or music if you reset.
    Hope this helps.

  • HT2529 This morning Voice Over started running on my computer, but when I go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES/INTERNATIONAL ACCESS the Voice Over option is off, so I turned it on and then off, but it's still on.  What else can I do to make it stop?

This morning Voice Over started running on my computer when I turned it on.  I did not turn Voice Over.  Could I have hit a combination of keys on the keyboard that accidentally turned it on?  When I went to System Preferences and chose Internation Access it showed that Voice Over was not even on.  I turned it on and turned it off to reset it, and it is still running.  How is this possible, and how to I get rid of it?
    Trumpeter

I went to System Preferences, Universal Access, and then VoiceOver for the fiftieth time after you said to check VoiceOver Utility to see if I saw anything odd.  On The VoiceOver screen it was actually saying that VoiceOver was on.  All day the VoiceOver option was off, and the computer talked to me everytime I logged in.  I tried turning it on and off and it still talked to me.  Now the VoiceOver option was on, so I turned it off again. Weird! I had tried several combinations of keys again and again as the tech instructed me to do, but we couldn't turn it off, but I have to admit that after my phone went dead I tried everything I could imagine; so maybe in trying to turn the talking off I turned the VoiceOver Option on. Anyway, somewhere along the way it quite talking to me.
Let me ask you a couple of questions.  When I clicked on VoiceOver Utility, after turning VoiceOver off, the screen message says: Speak the following greeting after login:  Welcome to Mac OSX.  VoiceOver is running. I was assuming that it meant VoiceOver was running.  That is what it is saying right now.   It's not talking to me anymore, but the screen says this whether the VoiceOver icon is on or off.  What is this all about.  Is it telling me that Voice Over is still running when I see this, or what?  After all, even when the OFF icon was chosen the computer still spoke to me when I hit each key upon logging in.  After you read the rest of this you will understand why I am asking if it is still running even though it's not talking to me.
There is a box that appears and says "Portable Preferences for (Jane Doe) have been detected on (JaneDoe).  Would you like to use them?    Always Use   /  No  /   Yes      What does that mean?
Last but not least. I was looking around and was clicking on Application, Documents, etc.  When I clicked on Documents, only four things came up even though there are tons of documents on my computer.  All four of them have to do with VoiceOver, and they were labeled as documents.  One of the documents had this in it:
    SCRConfiguration Cursor Tracking KBToVO
    SCRConfiguration Cursor Tracking VOToTXT
    SCRConfiguration Cursor Tracking VOToKB
I'm not a computer genius, so maybe I just don't know what I'm looking at.  Is it normal for something like this to be found under documents?  All of these were dated today, and the problems started today. I haven't gone to bed yet, so even though it's after midnight it's still the same day to me.  Anyway, none of the documents were dated before this problem started.  On top of that, I have tons of documents on my computer, but when I clicked on Documents, those four are the only ones that showed up.  After trying to decipher the programming language on them, I went to click on Applications and hit Documents again, and all the documents came up.  I scanned the list and didn't see them, but there are so many documents on here that I haven't had time to slowly go over them to see if I missed those four documents somehow. Since then I haven't been able to get just those four to appear by themselves again.
Now, is it possible that I still have a hacker and he knows through a key logger everything I am communicating to you and the Apple Store,  Maybe he did made a mistake and accidentally caused this problem, and through logging every key I have typed he has learned about his mistake and fixed it.  He could still be key logging me now without me knowing it; or maybe he removed the keylogger, because he know I'm taking it in to the Apple Store and can tell them now exactly what to look for.
It is either a hacker, or I have a very vivid imagination.  What do you think?

  • Voice Over Tool Lockup

I upgraded to Lion last week and now when I select Voice Over Tool, I get the beachball and the application just freezes. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I have to do a force quit to get out. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

I did try removing the pref file, but it made no difference. I was already at 4.0.1.
I bit the bullet, offloaded all my files to an external hard drive and wiped my Mac clean. I then reinstalled Snow Leopard. Everything is working fine.
Not sure what the hang up with Lion is on FCE. All the video editing works fine. Just causes the entire system to lockup while using Voice Over. Not sure if it's related to FaceTime but sneaking suspicion says maybe.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Voice over tips?

    Hi Everyone,
I am currently trying my hand at creating voice overs. I have a reasonable mic/preamp setup plugged into one of the higher end Sony Vaio laptops so I already get a descent raw audio file. However, that's exactly what it is: raw. I would be really grateful if any of you could give me some tips on making the audio (spoken male voice only) sound more professional. Perhaps not quite as deep and resonant as the film trailors but something towards that direction. At the moment I am experimenting with the compander and then I normalize the file. This has given fairly good results.
Your help will be much appreciated.
    Many thanks

Nothing beats an acoustically dead or well treated room for that closeness. I don't have it, but the Reflexion filter from Selectronics is pretty good. It's a half barrel of heavy duty damping material mounted around the mike.
When I use a dynamic mike, I point it not directly at the mouth but to the tip of my chin or even from the side. This way I avoid plosives like heavy B's and P's. It also rounds off treble gently, emphasizing the bass in your voice slightly. This kind of 'natural EQ'ing' is preferable to digital filtering afterwards IMO.
Inside Audition I always remove any noise that might creep in, like fan noises etc. I also roll off all bass below circa 70 hZ. You must listen to your recording to find the correct frequency; it shouldn't affect the sound at all. The reason I do this is to remove rumble and deep resonances that will not be audible on most computer speakers anyway. My recordings ends up in the MP3 format, and low frequencies tend to 'steal' a lot of energy from the compression algorithm. When there aren't any really low frequencies, you free up resources so that your VO is treated better. This is especially evident with hard MP3 compression.
If I'm not the last hand on the file I will deliver my files without any dynamic or EQ treatments except perhaps normalizing to -3 db. If I make the final file I actually use some hard limiting too. Max is at -3 dB, because I've found that laptop speakers especially can break up at anything above that. I push up the volume a bit to get more presence and intelligibility on poor speakers. It depends on your target audience.
Nevertheless, you need one of those rare 'million-dollar-voice' guys in to get that particualar voice. Technology can't do it alone. The attitude of the talent/speaker will make a huge difference. Don't sit hunchback'ed and talk, pretend you are a teacher (in a quiet class!) and you want to say something important to all, without shouting. Singers in the studio are often told to sing with a smile - however artificial - because it improves their voice. Similar tricks for VO. Things like that...

when I use voice over to read an epub in my Ibooks app, which is in Dutch, sometimes he start reading a book with an English Female voice and some books he reads with the Dutch male voice (which is good). All my epubs are Dutch books so the English voice sound terrible trying to pronounce Dutch. Can i fix this problem? Thanks, Tom

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?
