Voice over track gone silent

Hello,
I have a video on top of which I have added a voice over (my mom commenting on some 40 year old captured 8mm movies) in the audio track underneath the video track. Worked just great, but last time I opened the file, my voice over audio has gone silent. Each voice segment still shows, but I do not see the audio waveform anymore. When I take a voice segment and drag it on my hard disk, it produce a voice xx.mov file, which Quicktime would not open (I get a message like: "The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie").
I have, of course ensured that all volume settings on the mac and in iMovie are set properly (check boxes at the right f the tracks, volume slider below the video preview, etc.) I have also tried to view package by control-clicking on my iMovie file and clicking on "show package": I checked the content of the Media folder: all my voice file appear, but when I rty and open any of them, quicktime would not open them.
Has anybody had the same issue? Any way I could resolve it? Any help would be greatly appreciated as it took forever to record these voice-overs.
Thank you in advance, Regis

  • Replace visual selection, dont touch voice over track?  how?

My movie has a supplementary audio track now (voice over they call it even tho it is music).
All I want to do is replace 19 seconds of part of the movie with 19 seconds of another part of the movie.
Yet every split, every cut, every copy changes the length or placement of the voice over track, tho i never select the voice over track. So
I need to know how to replace a section without touching the track.  please and thanks !!
    Steve Z

If i cut the 19 seconds visual, and replace the 19 seconds visual, the track itself now becomes 19 sec. short unless I can pull it back out of somehwere?
IN other words, I need kind of a replace feature: replace this visual selection with that visual selection; nothing else changes?
Surely this can be done some how?  Seems very elementary.

  • In iOS iMovie, can I create a new voice over track while listening to the video clip's audio?

Can I hear the original track of a video clip while adding a voice over using iOS iMovie?  When I try to record a voice over for a clip that already has video, the video's audio is muted.

Forget it-- I figured it out.

  • Editing a Voice Over Track

    Hi:
Simple task. How do you do it? I have a VO track that has too many silent spaces. I want to be able to edit out the silent spaces so the VO is more fluid. How do edit out the silent, and join one piece of voice to the next pick up o the voice?
    Any answer greatly appreciated.

  • Help. Does anyone know why my voice-over tracks go keep going off-line?  Im not deleting anything

After voicing my project, I reboot the system so it would burn my DVD.  I come back to the project and the first two voiceovers are in red(meaning offline)?
Thank you for your help.  Jeff

I would check your drive with Disk Utility. Maybe it needs to be repaired?

  • Voice-over tracks continue to go offline after closing out FCPX.

This problem occurs on both my imacs.  Does anyone have ideas on how to prevent this.  My email is -------------
    Thanks

Hmmm... Are you ingesting / optimizing the VO into your "events library" and allowing the application to make "copies to events?" (It's a toggle switch on the import dialogue box)
It sounds like you are having FCPX access the original files from the original media platform.
If so, let your VO files join the party inside FCPX. Re-ingest them toggling THESE parameters:

  • FCPX has no audio tracks so how to add effects on voice over?

I imported my voice over track. Then, I proceeded to chop it up and move it to the appropiate points in the time line. However, now there are no "tracks" how can I EQ the whole thing in one go? All the individual choped up clips moved up and down willy-nilly into different empty areas of the time line.

I do VO work all the time, daily.  Record it, make that a Connected Timeline (if it is not in the Primary Timeline already), then chop it up as you normally do, and then align it with the audio first.  Then make it all a Compound Clip.  Apply the EQ or whatever sweetening you need to the Compound Clip.
Here are articles about doing VO with FCPX:

  • Using voice-over function I see the result on the specific audio track but I don't hear anything. What to do?.

Making a film in imovie I never had problems with voice-over. However in my current project I experienced problems at the end. Using the voice-over function I see the result - audio waves at the voice-over track - but I don't hear any sound of this track if I review or play this part of the project. Somebody an idea what I did wrong? Thanks for any suggestion.

Not sure why, but sometimes a project will just cease playback of Voiceovers added to it. I've seen this before, but never had it persist into a new project. As with any issues that are specific to a single project, it's usually best to start over, as one problem is quite possibly indicative of further issues down the line with that same project.
As a workaround (if you REALLY want to avoid recreating the project) would be to copy the voiceover files from within the iMovie Project file (browse to your Movies/iMovie Projects/ folder and right-click or CTRL+Click on the name of the project, then click "Show Package Contents") for that project out to your Desktop (or any other accessible location), then drag them back in to add them as a regular audio track. I've used this trick successfully, but it's not 100% (going back to the 'one problem means more later' thing).

  • Adding Sound Track To Voice Over

Why isn't this working? I recorded a voice over track. I just want to add a bed of music and sound effects underneath. All music and sound effects are in iTunes. I thought the process is simply to pull a track from "Audio Media Browser" into "Drag Apple Loops Here." Doesn't hold. Bounces back. What step am I missing. Basic question: "How do I add a sound track under a voice over track?"
Thanks you so much for any help

Did you create a new basic track to drop it in to?
You shouldn't even have to do that. Just drop into the Timeline area of an open GB Project.

  • Voice-over audio goes offline for no reason.  Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

This is happening on both my editors.  I will add a voice-over track to the storyline and if I close out that project or close out FCPX, sometimes my voiceover track is offline.  NO, I DID NOT MOVE THE FILE OR ERASE ANYTHING.  I appreciate any input.

    Hey there 79usma79!
I have a couple of articles for you that can help you troubleshoot the issues you are seeing with iTunes on Windows XP. The first is a general troubleshooting article, which can be found right here:
iTunes for Windows XP: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1421
This article can help you find out if there are any conflicts between your copy of Windows XP and iTunes, and can tell you what to do if there are. Before going down the troubleshooting route though, you should take a look at this article, which can help you back up your entire iTunes library to an external hard drive, so if this issue is recurring, you will be able to restore from that backup and will not have to worry about losing your playlists or music again:

  • No audio with voice over

I am redoing a 2008 project. I get no audio for either music or voice over when playing timeline. When I mute the voice over, then I get audio for the music.
I followed advice to eject external disk that contained the voice over file, since it said that somehow the voice over was not synched or something like that. I rebooted because it said that by rebooting the problem might be solved.
I have video out set to canvas playback as was suggested in this forum.
The disk my voice over is on is not the same as the disk the other aspects of the movie are on. When I play the voice over segments on the disk where they are stored, I hear them just fine in real player.
So what should I do to be able to hear them in FCE?
Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you!

    Hi -
Since 2008 is now 3 years ago, have you changed your software, computer, or storage devices since you originally did your project?

Is the voice over track one continuous clip, or is it a bunch of shorter clips that are positioned on the track?
I followed advice to eject external disk that contained the voice over file,
Who or what gave you this advice?
since it said that somehow the voice over was not synched or something like that.
Who or what is "it"? When reporting warning dialogs from FCE, the more accurate you can be with reporting exactly what the warning dialog says - the faster you can be advised of a solution to your problem.

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you are saying. Are you speaking about output controlled by the View menu or a setting in the Audio/Video settings? Is this audio problem associated with +outputting the video+ to an external device or is the problem apparent when using the audio monitoring on the Mac?
The disk my voice over is on is not the same as the disk the other aspects of the movie are on.
    OK.
When I play the voice over segments on the disk where they are stored, I hear them just fine in real player.
Are they Real Player documents? Or did you mean Quicktime player?
So what should I do to be able to hear them in FCE?
If you look at your browser, are there clips that have red bars slashed through them? If so, control click on the clip and from the drop down menu choose Reconnect Media. If the clip is showing up on the timeline with a Red Media Offline thumbnail you can also do this by control-clicking on the offline clip on the timeline.
When the reconnection Pane opens, you will see the file listed as Offline and a directory path where FCE last found the file. You can steer FCE to the location of the file that you found and verified using the your audio player, and reconnect the media so that FCE now links to that file.
Post back if this does not help.

  • Voice over not in sequence?

I recorded a voice over to a sequence yesterday in Premiere Pro CC and opened it today, and the voice over was there. Now I'm trying to open the sequence with the voice overs after closing the application, and the sequence opens, but the voice over tracks are not in the timeline. Only the A1 track has audio in it, but I recorded in A2 and A3 as well.
All the audio files are saved in the project files, so I know they are on my computer. Just for some reason I can't find the sequence with the voice over tracks in it. I have over 500 voice overs, and would really really like to not have to line them up since they were already lined up. Help?

See if you can open an auto save or a (save a) copy from another location on your hard drive.

  • Voice over levels almost non exisistent...?

I know how to go in to system prefs and set line-in and boost the level. But regardless when trying to put a voice over track in Imovie, (tired it on a Power mac dual G5 and my G4 laptop,) it's sooooooo low. Tried using Garage band and even tried a brand new Sure 8500 mic from the neighborhood apple store... Is there any way around this? I'm helping my good friend with a memories video for his Grandmother and she is 100 years old. If I can't hear it she's got no chance!
Jokes aside, this seems like an impedance problem but I'm sure I've got everything turned up.

    Hi Chad,
your Mac hasn't a Mic-in, but a line-it... same plugs, but indeed, that is a power issue... ;-))
you need a mic-pre-amp to make that work, or, as catspaw recommended, a usb-interface, I use Griifin's iMic, which works direct with a Mic and converts into usb...

  • How Do I Add A Pre-recorded Voice Over to an iMovie Project?

I have an audio file with the voice over I want to add to my movie project (which has an insturmental music track I want to duck during the voice over). How can I add this pre-recorded voice over track to my project?

You can drag in the voiceover file and drop it on top of the clip where you want it to start. It does not have to be perfectly placed, because you can fine tune it later by dragging.
I would suggest putting your voiceover file in iTunes and dragging in from the music browser, but it also works to drag in from the Finder. If you drag in from the Finder, you must take care not to move it later, or the iMovie Project will not be able to find it.

  • Voice-over button hangs/locks

    Hello,
hope someone can help me with my voice-over problem. When I push the record button in iMovie to do an voice-over the record button locks/hangs after almost one second, the green indicator is also freezing. When I try to pusch it again the turning colored icon is started but nothing works after that. Then I have to wait for about 10 minutes before the colored icon stops and then a large voice-over track is building in soundtrack 1. This will take some time and it goes all the way with the lenght of my film. When I klik the timeline it stops.
I have also tried it with a slide show but the result remain the same.
The VU meter is working OK (green-yellow), it responds very sensitivety on my speaking.
Thanks in advance and excuses for my English.

The problem was no longer excist after the last iMovie updates.
