  • PLEASE READ EVERYTHING. My macbook pro is with virus. What should I do?

Hello Guys! Thanks for reading this. First, I ask apologize for any mistakes (I'm not a native speaker neither I live in a country that English is the official language).
I've used an anti-virus called "virus barrier express" for some time (it never detected any malware) and it doesn't detect any today. I've experienced some problems (such as speed reduction, but i found it normal). My macbook pro is from late 2012 and here the specifications: Processor  2,5 GHz Intel Core i5 Memory  4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3. I have 432,6 GB free memory of 499,25 GB. I still use Mountain Lion. I was pretty sure it had a malware then I installed the Comodo Anti-virus. I was that sure because of three things:
1- In several unrelated sites some words appeared green and when I passed the cursor over them (most of the time unintentionally) it opened sort of a box or little window. It appeared and "X" at the "right down"(think about the the screen of the mac, it would be near the trash) corner of the box then I clicked in it and the box closed. (these is similar to the "hot words" on windows).
2- When I load a youtube video (not sure if it has begun yesterday or the day before yesterday) the description, the commentaries and the suggestions (suggested videos) keep going down (I know this sound very weird, but I'll try to explain it: I need to scroll down the page to read the description and every 1-3 seconds I need to scroll down again because the description is a little "downer". This happens "in blocs" (it doesn't scroll down continuously as i do when scroll down, it go "jumping spaces"). P.S.: the video and the search bar don't move). I'm not sure I explained right, any doubts ask me.
3- Several times when surfing the web new windows (tabs) open with non-related things as "how to work from home and win R$16.000 (this was an aleatory number, and R$ is the real/reais = Brazil coin) and "Gold scheme: how to win the lottery" (this was translated from Portuguese).
4- The most urgent problem (only appeared after installation of Comodo Anti-virus)  My macbook pro is constantly stopping. Example: if I try to open the Library folder (after I explain why I was trying to open it) it stop and I need to force the computer to shut down by pressing the power button and holding it. I can't think in ant other examples right now but since yesterday I have need to force the computer to shut down sometimes. This continue even if quit/exit Comodo anti-virus.
Continuing the history… I ordered the Comodo to scan my computer and it has found 2 malware at a Library folder and 1 malware at System folder, I've tried to put them in quarantine, but the computer stopped (I don't know if it is the right term: the colored disk appeared and the computer didn't accept any command) and the malware is still there (I tried to put them in quarantine but the computer stopped again). The danger of the threat is low accordingly to Comodo Anti-virus.
What should I do? If I remember something more I'll add it later.

First, remove Comodo. You don't need it, and it sounds like it is causing a problem.
The other symptoms sound like you have adware installed. Comodo might have detected some components of that adware, or it might not have, but whatever the case, you should NEVER allow any anti-virus software to quarantine or delete files from your computer. See: How to remove infected files.
Regarding the adware, see my Adware Removal Guide.

  • My 2012 Mac Mini came with a SSD and with Yosemite, can I add a SSHD and also migrate everything from a Macbook Pro that is running Lion 10.7.5?

    Hi Apple Community,
Today I received a refurbished 2012 i5 Mac Mini that I purchased via Amazon. The Mac Mini came with a 256gb Samsung SSD only installed. The Mac Mini also has 10.10.2 Yosemite.
I am planing on ordering an "OWC Data Doubler Mounting Kit" to add another drive onto the Mac Mini.
I also plan on getting a second drive which would be a 1tb SSHD Black Western Digital (16GB SSD) 2.5 SATA III (6.0GB/s) 5400RPM drive.
Now here is where I am a very confused and concerned. What I essentially want to do is use Migration Assistant to completely migrate what I have on a 2012 i7 Macbook Pro's 750gb HDD to the Mac Mini's 1tb SSHD drive. I want every file and setting to be placed on my new Mac Mini just the way it is on the Macbook Pro. The Macbook Pro is however using 10.7.5 Lion while my new Mac Mini is using 10.10.2 Yosemite.
What makes me confused is, if I migrate everything from the Macbook Pro onto the 1tb SSHD, would I still be able to benefit by having the 256gb Samsung SSD in the Mac Mini? For instance, would the Mac Mini still be able to boot up super fast and use the SSD to write and read programs very fast? Or is it because I am migrating everything from my Macbook Pro's HDD onto the Mac Mini's 1tb SSHD, my Mac Mini will not be able to use the speed benefits of the SSD?
Another concern is, will I be able to use Yosemite or will I be stuck with 10.7.5 Lion? I would only like Yosemite. I do not mine if Lion is removed from my new Mac Mini.

    UPDATE:
    Hi again,
I made more research on raid and now I am considering not to raid at all.
Raid0 seems extremely risky because I do not know how the SSD and SSHD would react together.
And Raid1 seems like it would not be able to function the way I would like to store my files. [The SSD is 256gb and SSHD is 1tb, there is no point in raid1]
I think I will just have to add the second drive and use it without raid. I will mostly save media files such as movies, pictures, and music. And for everything else, save it onto the SSD's storage.

  • Voice recording on a 2011 MacBook Pro?

How do I make a voice recording on a 2011 MacBook Pro?

I've upgraded the same model to Mavericks without any issues or problems. If you are worried, then make a backup before you upgrade. Simple enough precaution. If you find you cannot access your external data drives, then erase the internal drive and restore your backup. You can make a cloned backup using the Restore option in Disk Utility which will also clone the Recovery HD that you would need should you decide to restore the backup.

  • I have moved everything from my macbook pro onto my iMac. For some reason I cant see any of my music in iTunes even though I have logged in with my normal apple ID.

I have moved everything from my macbook pro onto my iMac. For some reason I cant see any of my music in iTunes even though I have logged in with my normal apple ID. Please help me before I kill something!!

How did you go about transferring your library onto the iMac? There are specific instructions one must follow to do this correctly without causing loss of data. Simply signing in via your Apple ID won't do much of anything unless you are an iTunes Match subscriber.
Did you just copy the entire iTunes folder over? If so, Quit iTunes then hold down option and click the iTunes icon in the Dock. Don't release option until the popup appears asking if you want to create a new library. Simply navigate to the library in the folder you copied over.
If you didn't go about transferring your library in that way, and you still have the MacBook Pro, follow these instructions to transfer your library properly to avoid data loss.
    Hope that helps!

  • I can't use the new Adobe Reader X on my Macbook Pro. HELP!

The other day I downloaded the new Adobe Reader X on my MacBook Pro. Since then I can't open pdfs in Firefox. How can this problem be solved????

    Hey vgamborg,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
This article should help you troubleshoot issues playing sound from the built-in speakers. Try the steps listed, and I quoted a part about the red light.

Check to see if a red light is lit in the line-out port. If so, your Apple computer may need service.
    Have a nice day,

  • I'm trying to wipe out everything off my Macbook Pro.  When I get to the disc utility, the erase tab only erases current available space, not all data.  Can anyone help?

I'm trying to erase everything off my MacBook Pro to transfer the computer to a new owner.  When I get to the disc utility, the only option is to erase "empty space," not entire contents.  Can anyone help?

  • Can I use firewire to transfer everything from my Macbook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.25 GHz) to the new iMac (2.5GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5)?

I have a MacBook Pro to use at work. It has everything (all genuine softwares, server connection etc). The company is using a contract IT company so connecting to the server and setting email is real issue with me as this IT people can't configure Mac. Last time it took them 1 week to set up everything for me ( me one the phone with them as they aren't coming to our office - they only use QuickViewer to get access to my laptop).
Now the company is buying me an iMac so that I can use the laptop at home. Can I use firewire to transfer everything to the new iMac so that I don't waste my time installing softwares & calling this IT people to set up my email and connection to the server again? If it works do I have to enter serial numbers in again for all the softwares or I have to buy new softwares (I know with Adobe CS - I can only install in one computer)?
    Thanks in advance.

If you want to use the adobe suite on the imac you will have to deactivate it on the MBP or it will show up as being used. That is if you can only install it on one computer. Some licenses you can install it on 2 computers but it has to say that on the cd key tag.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the contractors. It is not that hard to get stuff like that up and running on the mac.

  • My quandary is how to transfer EVERYTHING from a Macbook pro that won't boot up to a new one, will the usual linking with a firewire lead still work?

I have an early intel Macbook Pro that wouldn't wake from sleep and won't now boot up, i'm just going to replace it with a new 13" i5 but i need to transfer the last five years of my life off the dead one to the new one, there's nearly 3 grand of music software and mp3's before i even think about the 10 years of photographs and videos, some of it is backed up but i ideally want to just transfer it all over.
what are my options? will linking the two together with a firewire or similar still be possible without the old one booting up (it still has power and turns on but the sleep light is constantly lit but very dim, the hard drive does sound like it's spinning up) or am I best removing the old Hard drive and putting it in an external case, would I be able to access directories and folders or could i boot up off an external drive or would there be hardware compatibility problems?
without sounding off i'd appreciate any complicated processes be explained in beginner to intermediate levels of "GEEK" i'm far from a pro but should be able to muddle through!!!
you've no idea how much any help with this will be appreciated!!!

Since the old MBP is dead the only option is to remove the hard drive and use a SATA/IDE to USB adapter to get all your stuff off the old drive.
One note though make sure you use the same user name and passord on your new MBP as you had on the old one.
As to software hopefully you have all the license information written down other wise you may have a hard time reinstalling some of it. Also be aware that OS X Lion will not run older PPC software. So if you have older programs that used Rosetta to run it will not run on Lion.
    Good luck with everything.

  • The spinning "wheel of death" does NOT go away! I've loaded too much stuff on my computer (including the entire Adobe CS6 software) and I want to delete everything on my macbook pro and start over? How do I clean everything up without buying MacKeeper?

I use my MacBook Pro (Late 2009) for EVERYTHING and I have loaded so many apps, even doubles of some, I think!   My computer is running really SLOW and I think it is because I don't have enough memory.
I just installed the new Adobe CS6 and that was a BIG mistake.  The spinnning wheel of death doesn't stop! I wish I could load that program on my computer so I can use it "on the go", but I can't stand the spinning wheel!
I want to clean up my computer and get rid of EVERYTHING on it!!     Then, re-install the factory settings to run Lion.  I believe this will make the wheel stop spinning.
However, how do I make sure that all of the extra stuff that is attached to the app, ( including all the cache') is deleted too?   I don't want to have to buy MacKeeper!
I am hoping the computer wizards or the apple team can give me an answer on how to clean up everything and start over.  I have saved everything on my desktop mac.

Thank you so much for the help!  I had heard bad things about MacKeeper and I don't want to screw up my macbook  any more than it already is!  I will do as you suggest.  Do you believe this is the best solution for the problem I described?
Should I load my Adobe Creative Suite 6 (in the cloud version) on an external hard drive?
I am so tired of this spinning wheel....should I avoid putting the CS6 on my macbook pro altogether?
I have it on my desk top mac, but wanted to be able to take the photo editing with me when I am "out and about".  I know I should probably buy the ipad, which would transport much easier, but even the ipad probably doesn't have the capacity to hold all the Adobe CS6 apps, correct?

  • Everything on my Macbook Pro with Mavericks runs very slowly

I have a 13" macbook pro with Mavericks operating system, and it is only a little over a year old. In the last 2 or 3 months everything on the computer has been running incredibly slowly.
I first noticed it when streaming online videos, the audio would be several seconds ahead of the video, but the lagging has started everywhere else too. When I type the text appears several seconds after it has been typed, it takes much longer than it should to scroll down webpages and the cursor often freezes, I have even noticed a very long lag switching between webpages or applications.
I have very few things saved on this computer, just some Word documents and pictures. I did have Sims 3 installed but I uninstalled it thinking it may be the problem.
I have also noticed a very audible metallic plinking noise that could be unrelated. It started ] maybe 2 months before the lagging did and sounds like it's coming from the bottom right hand corner of the computer. I'm considering resetting my computer to factory settings because I haven't been able to find anything to fix this issue.

The hard drive is located in the bottom right of your model and I experienced a very similar issue twice in less than a year of purchase. I suggest you back all your data up as soon as possible as it may be the signs of a hard drive beginning to fail. My symptoms were it would take longer to start up and I would get the spinning ball when I secondary clicked. Before it would fail, I would try and repair errors found in disk utility and it would say it could not be repaired, back up as much data as you can. By that point, it was too late to back anything up. From there, I would get a loading bar on startup and once it loaded, it would shut down.  But it could be a less serious issue as well. It could also be the SMC, PRAM, or errors in your hard drive's coding. But before you follow these steps, back all your stuff up that you want or need in case it is your hard drive. Boot the machine into recovery mode by holding in command and r as soon as you turn it on. After it loads, you should get a box to pick your language. Select your language and select disk utility. In there, click Macintosh HD and verify the disk. If anything appears in red text, there are errors that need to be fixed. All you have to do is click repair. If it says they can't be repaired and to back up your data, your hard drive may have failed. To reset the SMC, plug in the mac and shut it down. On the left side, located the control, option, and shift keys. Hold those down along with the power button. Hold it for a few seconds and let them go. It's normal the machine won't turn on and the light on the charger will change state. Next, reset the PRAM. Shut down the Mac and located command, option, P, and R on your keyboard. You're going to turn on the Mac and as soon as you do so, hold those four keys down. It's going to shut down immediately but keep holding them in. It will turn on and make the "bong" noise like it normally does. Let it cycle about two or three times and let the keys go and wait for it to start up.
I hope this helps and good luck!
