Voice VLAN config with multiple IP Phone systems

We currently have a legacy TDM ACD system used by the Call Centre running alongside CUCM 8.5 which is used by back office and admin staff.
When we implemented the Call Manager we configured all our access ports with the Voice VLAN to make any office moves and changes straight forward, regardless of whether or not the position would have a Cisco phone i.e. a cisco phone could be plugged into any floor port throughout the building and it would register.
Currently I am in the planning stages of replacing the legacy ACD system with Avaya Aura which will be running side by side with CUCM. My concern is that every time there are office moves, the access ports are going to have to be reconfigured to the Voice VLAN of the relevant system depending on which type of phone is at that desk.
Has anyone had similar experiences and found a solution?
Not ideal I presume, but was wondering if we could use the same Voice VLAN for both systems?

It's just a VLAN. Don't sweat it, stick them all in the same one. Nothing will explode.
Each phone system will have it's own way of locating the call processor.
CUCM = DHCP Option 150
Mitel = Some other DHCP option (128-130, and some others)
Avaya = DHCP option 176
etc...
So you can set all these on your scope, and each phone type will find it's server...

  • SG300 voice vlan problem with UC520

    Hi Forumers'
    My problem statement:
    - refere to attached topology.png, this is how my network structure look like
    - the IP phone after boot cannot get connected, so it can't download the XML config file from UC520. suspicious switching problem.
    - my configuration shown at topology.png and my vlan voice config show as voice vlan setting.png
    - My requirement is SG300 switch single switchport to carry vlan data and vlan voice.
    - what is the trunking mode for voice VLAN siwth a IP phone+data should i configure? is it switchport voice vlan vvid, switchport voice vlan dot1p, switchport voice vlan untagged or switchport voice vlan none to suite above requirement?
    thanks
    Noel

    Hello Noel,
Sorry for the late reply, things have been quite hectic around here lately
    1. Why use trunk? the UC520 only have vlan voice (vlan 20)
Do you mean that the data VLAN is handled by another device ? Still I would leave it as a trunk in order to be able manage the UC through the data VLAN. (Unless for security or other reasons you would choose otherwise of course)
    2. The UC520 got CUE (voice messaging), how should i design the service module uplink to the core switch?
Nothing in particular has to be done for this, CUE is handled and routed inside the UC520, the CUE vlan (default ID =90) is only used if you have another CUE in the network
    1. i guess i did this: swithcport tagged vlan 20, untagged vlan 10. is it ok for this setting?
If the Voice Vlan on the switch and on the UC520 has been defined as VLAN 20 (default = VLAN 100) this is perfect. Verify if both on the UC and on the switch, the voice VLAN ID is set to 20.
    1. so if i just point the phone to vlan 20 (vlan voice), should i create the LLDP network policy?
If you are ready to configure the VLAN manually on the phone, you don't need the LLDP policy, that is correct.
The LLDP policy is being used for having the phones automatically choose the VLAN you defined, so you don't need to set it manually.
Hope this answers your questions ?

  • When closing 2 windows(with multiple tabs each), system restore does not properly restore the second window's tabs. Is this a bug in the new update/any ideas to fix?

I regularly use 2 windows with multiple tabs each and session restore would work to get them all back, but after this latest update the second window does not restore properly, with the first tab not visible on top(only in drop down menu) and the add a tab button now on the left(instead of right). The add a tab button is not really concerning other than it indicates other problems with the tabs on tab of the 2nd window. Not having the 1st tab visible is frustrating, because I can not move it or as easily navigate. Also, the tabs on top of the 2nd window that are visible no longer have the "x" to close visible unless that tab is selected. I'm assuming this is a problem with the new release/update, since this is the first time I've ever encountered the problem, and I've shut down and restored Firefox a few times to make sure this was a recurring problem and not a one-time deal. Any ideas on how to fix would be welcome(other than perhaps cramming my tabs onto one window or sucking it up XD).

  • JMS to communicate with multiple 3rd party systems

    Hi,
I'm fairly new to JMS and I need to build a system where I communicate with several third party systems through JMS.
Basically what I need is some sort of synchronous message system, as I need the result to display on my webpage.
In this scenario, I was wondering what is the most common design here, in terms of queues or topics.
Would it be normal for each system to have a input and output queue, or is it more practical that I provide a outbound topic and an inbouw queue that these systems could use?
I know how I can set this up, but I just wanted to ask if it is normal practice to ask a third party to connect to your own JMS system, rather than connecting to their queue/topic?
    Thanks,
    Steven

  • CIF blocks with multiple R/3 systems

    Hi,
We are in SCM V5 and we have two R/3 systems connected to one APO system. Theya re two different BSGs, with totally different integration models as well.
We are using APO outbound queues for both the R/3 systems.
The question is, does a CIF block from one R/3 system block the order from other R/3 system?
    Example:
I have a planned order PO1 created in APO that is bound to go to R/3 system R1. This order is now stuck in SMQ1 in APO.
I create another planned order PO2 that is bound to go to other R/3 system R2 from the same APO system.
Does the PO1 block PO2?? or are they separate?
I would appreciate if you can substantiate that with some reference.
    Thanks.
Edited by: Raj G on Nov 5, 2008 8:24 AM

I have not seen such a configuration myself offlate, but based on theoretical knowledge one outbound queue block to one R3 system should not interfere with another outbound queue to another R3 system. The queues are RFC destination specific. INtegration models are also specific to a destination R3 system. However there may be elements that are common - mostly BASIS level settings. Not sure if it interferes with the application.

  • Network Setup for a 1232AG config with multiple AP's

I'm looking to deploy a temporary outdoor network using 1232AG radios, with only one radio connected to Ethernet & Internet. All the other radios will have a A radio connection to the parent. And their
G radios will advertise for Client Access. Ultimately I'd also like to have the local ethernets active on each of the remote Radios, so that a switch could be setup for people who don't have Wireless.
So the questions, Is this type of setup even possible? If I use the A radios for back haul, and the G radio for Client Access, does the Ethernet get disabled?
What station-role in the network should each of the radios play. Ultimately I believe we could have different SSID's and IP Subnets for each AP, but if we kept them all the same, can we make this one big Bridge? So that someone can Roam between AP's. Granted I don't have the funds for Wireless Lan Controller. Sugestions?

So what you are trying to do is have some sort of MESH outdoor wireless, but using the 1232AG? Don't think you can do this by using the bridge role. You would have to go bridge to bridge and then have an ap connected to one of the bridge to handle users...

  • Help with Multiple VLANS and IP Phone Setup.

Although i have a 3com, I have a cisco IP Phone. I have the IP Phone connected to the 3com swithport using a hybrid port. It's a tagged member of vlan3 (voice net) and an untagged member of vlan1(native data)
The ip phone gets the right DHCP address for vlan3 ( 10.x.x.x ) but the laptop connected to the ip phone gets the IP for vlan 3 as well.
I want the laptop to get the IP of the native vlan ( 192.168.x.x)
what would the port setup need to be ? does it need to be a trunk ? i have the PVID of the port set to vlan3, this allows the IP phone to get its vlan3 DHCP address.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
The 3com OS is very similar to the latest of CISCO IOS'.
so explain wtih syntax and i'm sure the 3com can relate.

Based on your description of a 'Hybrid Port' this sounds like Cisco's 'Multi-VLAN Port' that was a feature of the 2900XL/3500XL series switches. This feature has however long since gone......
With a Cisco switch an access port supporting an Access VLAN & a Voice VLAN is effectively a Trunk with only one Tagged VLAN and the Native VLAN:
    interface FastEthernet0/1
    switchport mode access
    switchport access vlan 10
    switchport voice vlan 100
This results in the same configuration as:
    interface FastEthernet0/1
    switchport mode trunk
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport trunk native vlan 10
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 100
With the exception of CDP packets being sent advertising the Voice VLAN.
With regards to other IP Phone vendors and DHCP Vendor Options - the answer is it depends....
Nortel use Vendor Option 144 to inform the IP Phone of the Voice VLAN and Option 128 for the Server (PBX) to use. Ericsson uses Vendor Option 43 that can be configured to tell the IP Phone the VLAN and the Web server to read the config file from.
I don't think you will get this working automatically with your 3Com switches, you can however manually configure the VLAN on the Cisco IP Phones.

  • 802.1x, voice vlan and IP phone

Hi, I reviewed many posts here, and I still need the clarification how 802.1x on the switch works with non-Cisco IP phone (not supporting CDP) and PC connected to the PC port. If I configure 802.1x on a switch port, along with access and voice vlan, next I configure the static voice vlan on the non-Cisco phone, will it be possible to authenticate the user on the PC and bypass authentication for IP phone? Is CDP required in such scenario - (non-Cisco IP phone doesn't support it)?
    Regards,
    Krzysztof

You need CDP for touchless interop. CDP can of course be spoofed though, so proceed with caustion anyway.
You need multi-domain authentication to appropriately deal with non-Cisco phones and port-based access-control. See here to get started:

  • Potential Security Hole with 802.1x and Voice VLANs?

I have been looking at 802.1x and Voice VLANs and I can see what I think is a bit of a security hole.
If a user has no authentication details to gain access via 802.1x - i.e. they have not been given a User ID or the PC doesn't have a certificate etc. If they attach a PC to a switchport that is configured with a Voice VLAN (or disconnect an IP Phone and plug the PC direct into the switchport) they can easily see via packet sniffing the CDP packets that will contain the Voice VLAN ID. They can then easily create a Tagged Virtual NIC (via the NIC utilities or driver etc) with the Voice VLAN 802.1q Tag. Assuming DHCP is enabled for the Voice VLAN they will get assigned an IP address and have access to the IP network. I appreciate the VLAN can be locked down at the Layer-3 level with ACL's so any 'non-voice related' traffic is blocked but in this scenario the user has sucessfully bypassed 802.1x authentication and gain access to the network?
Has anyone done any research into this potential security hole?
    Thanks
    Andy

Thanks for the reply. To be honest we would normally deploy some or all of the measures you list but these don't around the issue of being able to easily bypass having to authenticate via 802.1x.
As I said I think this is a hole but don't see any solutions at the moment except 802.1x on the IP Phone, although at the moment you can't do this with Voice VLANs?

  • Phone not picking up Voice VLAN

    Hi All,
Strange issue that's just started happening with a few 6921 phones.
On our cisco switch when port is configured with data and voice vlan, the phone picks up an IP address from the data vlan and in turn doesn't register. It's as if it doesn't see the voice vlan. As soon I remove the data vlan and have voice vlan only on the port, phone picks up IP from the voice network and registers against the CME. This all worked before on the same ports, nothing changed. It just suddenly stopped working.
    Anyone seen this before?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Ok first output is when the phone doesn't work. VLAN 7 is the data vlan and 81 is Voice on this LAN.
    interface FastEthernet2/0/39
     description IP and Data Port
     switchport access vlan 7
     switchport mode access
     switchport voice vlan 81

     macro description cisco-phone
     spanning-tree portfast
     spanning-tree bpduguard enable
     service-policy input AutoQoS-Police-CiscoPhone
Output below is when the phone does work.
    interface FastEthernet2/0/39
     description IP and Data Port
     switchport mode access
     switchport voice vlan 81
     srr-queue bandwidth share 10 10 60 20

     macro description cisco-phone
     spanning-tree portfast
     spanning-tree bpduguard enable

    end
And this did work previously. Only 6921 phones affected.

  • 802.1x and Voice VLAN

I had read articles on cco, and I believed for the same switch port we can have 802.1x configure and the voice vlan configure. It mean the IP phone is connect to the switch port with 802.1x configured, but the phone will not autheticate, only the workstation connect to phone data port will get authenticate.
I had configured 802.1x and test with notebook logon and able to access the network. Now I would like to test the notebook attached to IP phone data port, and the phone connect to switch port configure with 802.1x. But I failed to add voice vlan commmand. Why ?
    interface GigabitEthernet9/48
    description temporary port
    switchport
    switchport access vlan 12
    switchport mode access
    no ip address
    dot1x port-control auto
    spanning-tree portfast
    CIG01-ENT-SW1(config-if)#switchport voice vlan 14
Command rejected: Gi9/48 is Dot1x enabled port.

Using IEEE 802.1x Authentication with Voice VLAN Ports
A voice VLAN port is a special access port associated with two VLAN identifiers:
?VVID to carry voice traffic to and from the IP phone. The VVID is used to configure the IP phone connected to the port.
?PVID to carry the data traffic to and from the workstation connected to the switch through the IP phone. The PVID is the native VLAN of the port.
In single-host mode, only the IP phone is allowed on the voice VLAN. In multiple-hosts mode, additional clients can send traffic on the voice VLAN after a supplicant is authenticated on the PVID. When multiple-hosts mode is enabled, the supplicant authentication affects both the PVID and the VVID.
A voice VLAN port becomes active when there is a link, and the device MAC address appears after the first CDP message from the IP phone. Cisco IP phones do not relay CDP messages from other devices. As a result, if several Cisco IP phones are connected in series, the switch recognizes only the one directly connected to it. When IEEE 802.1x authentication is enabled on a voice VLAN port, the switch drops packets from unrecognized Cisco IP phones more than one hop away.
When IEEE 802.1x authentication is enabled on a port, you cannot configure a port VLAN that is equal to a voice VLAN.
Waht kind of switch do you have? In 3550 I can configure the port for both vvid and pvid:
    interface FastEthernet0/1
    switchport access vlan 3
    switchport mode access
    switchport voice vlan 2
    no ip address
    dot1x port-control auto
    spanning-tree portfast
    end
Nevertheless, as the statement above indicates, the port will need to be configured for multi-host in order the PC behind the phone get autehntication:
    under the interface configure "dot1x host-mode multi-host"
Nevermind, I just realized that you might have a 5600 running native, checking the configuration guide and realese notes it does not looks like dot1x and vvlan can play together in that platform.

  • DHCP and voice vlan on Cisco 3560 switch

    Greetings,
I'm setting up a Cisco 3560 switch for voice and data comms. I'm looking for documentation with best practice guidelines for the following requirements.
    1. Using the Cisco 3560 as a DHCP server - Config examples.  Do I need to use different subnets for the voice and data vlans?
    2. Layer 2 CoS QoS  - I'm connecting Aastra phones as well as notebooks - I've been told that Aastra also makes use of the voice vlan config through LLDP and that Aastra phones supports CDP.
    Your assistance will be appreciated.

    Hi ,
Cisco recommends that you have a separate vlan for  voice and data with different ip subnets for voice and data. You will need to configure the dhcp pool accordingly.
Here is the config guide for setting up IOS DHCP server:
