Voicemail choices
My voicemail no longer gives me the option of choosing which voicemail to listen to. when I touch the voicemail icon, it automatically dials voicemail. I used to be able to see the voicemails and choose which one to listen to.
Same thing just happened to me after updating firmware to 1.1.2. All voicemail entries seemed to disappear. I rebooted the phone without success. I eventually went to the settings to see if something had changed and reset my voicemail password (to to original password). This corrected the problem. Try to reset your voicemail password in the settings for the phone. Good luck.

Visual Voicemail not working on iPhone 4, iOS 7.0.2
Before I get into the specifics, I want to say YES, I already called AT&T about this. Their Tier 2 support guy couldn't resolve it so it's been elevated to a support ticket and I'm waiting for a reply. I'd just like to know if there's anything I can try on my end, or if there's any telltale sign of a defective unit.
The phone: iPhone 4, 8GB, AT&T. 2 years old, off-contract. Unlocked. iOS 7.0.2
We just got back from a European trip and the visual voicemail on my wife's iPhone 4 is not working. Before we left, I unlocked it via iTunes and updated to iOS 7. I didn't want to upate the OS but iTunes was not giving me a choice, despite trying the various options to keep it on iOS 6 (believe me, I tried). Anyway, in Sweden I bought prepay SIM cards for our phones and used those on the whole trip, swapping the ATT sims back in once we got home. We both had issues with our voicemail after that, with repeated prompts for our password and having to go to AT&T to reset it and all that bizness. My 4S is working fine now, her 4 is not.
She knew she had at least 3 voicemails while we were gone but they were not showing up. Last night I checked for a carrier update, then set the iPhone to update to 7.0.2 while we slept; woke up to find the update had FAILED and the iPhone seemed bricked. After updating iTunes and repairing permissions, finally got the phone back up and updated, with a long restore from backup with apps and music. Still no new voicemails. I 'Reset Network Settings' to no avail, after working through all the steps in the Apple Knowledgebase article. So I called AT&T. The first tech did several things (on/off. more Network Settings resets) and the old voicemails did show up -- but no NEW ones would pop up when she made test calls. The tier 2 guy did some resets on their end, still no joy on showing new voicemails. As a last-ditch effort, he reset the entire voicemail account for that phone. Now visual voicemail is completely GONE. Pressing the button just calls voicemail and prompts you for the password. New voicemails are in the system, but there's no prompt on the phone that you even have one, you have to call.
SO... anyone else have this issue? The AT&T guy seemed to be at the end of his rope and had nothing left to try on his end. He thought it was a hardware issue, though everything was working fine before I a) upgraded to 7 and b) swapped SIM cards. Is there ANYTHING ELSE I can try on my end to see if its an issue with the iPhone versus an AT&T problem?
TIA,
JVKGenerally, when going out of the country and using a foreign SIM, carrier files can be changed. Go to Settings>General>About>and look at Carrier? What does it say? You may have to perform a restore. You can try a restore from a backup, that would reinstall the iOS, and would provide the latest AT&T carrier file as well. See if this will fix the problem.

How can I select the default greeting for a voicemail for the iPhone 4s?
I am wanting to set up the voicemail feature for my iPhone 4s. (I have had this phone for years but never enacted a voicemail!) However, I am having trouble. When I click on the phone settings in my phone, the only options I have in regards to voicemail is to set up or change the password. I am not given the option to set up a voicemail. Whenever I try to set up the voicemail by dialing *86, I am given only the options of changing my password or to set up a custom greeting. I am not able to select the default/standard greeting as it is not mentioned. I am wondering how I can go about this. I am not sure why I don't have the options already available in my phone automatically or why it is not provided as an option when I call to set it up.
Any help with this?
Thank you!!nnd217, Help is here! The 4S is a great device, sorry to learn that you are having trouble with setting up the VM default greeting. I should be able to shed some light on this situation. If you go to your phone icon, as if you were making a call, you should see the voicemail icon down at the bottom right. Once you select that, in the upper left corner there is an option that says Greeting, so ahead and select that. From there you have two choices, default and Customer. If you select default there will be a check mark in that box, then hit save. You should now have your default greeting in place. If you do not have that or continue to have issues with it, please let me know! Thanks! I am a member of a shared family plan which as I see it posted our bill is over $300 a month, which does not include unlimited data, family protection (which allows you to permanently block numbers vs there 30 or 90 day limit if you are not covered) <---- this requires you to constantly be on alert of something so ridiculous that it shouldn't be concerned with, and finally they do not offer an upgraded voicemail service. So my voicemail asks me to enter pin than right to messages. It does not tell me the following: The date the call was made, the time the call was made, nor any other pertinent information regarding the call aside from the number and than the message. It's frustrating because I miss a lot of calls these days due to volume controls and silent modes and ring tones that aren't loud enough that I need to know when calls are received. I don't ever remember having to pay for an upgraded voicemail service, that's like hiring a firm to handle all my incoming calls. I want my answering machine back. I have many other issues to include Verizon's online chat service which has at least one major issue. I won't bring that up here. The question is how much more money can they get for a simple cell phone plan? For christ's sake.
Message was edited by: NoMoreOriginalNames Grammar correctionsThe free voicemail is basic which gives you the date and time of the message. If you want more you should pay for more. Also, some Android phones with KitKat have free Visual Voicemail.
Thank you for your feedback, but my phone gives me no choice and it most certainly does not state the date and time that the message was received. The only way for me to know that is if I happen to check exactly the phone log around the same time that the message was left, else it is buried underneath other more recent and answered calls. And seriously man, the whole pay more idea is getting a bit far-fetched. There is no reason why I should be able to buy a portable mini answering machine for a one time payment of $14.99 with a reusable blank tape, they don't have these and we'd look ridiculous carrying them around with everything else, but the point is we are giving permission to charge for some ridiculous things that should not be paid more for. My old answering machine worked just fine, and more importantly I have never paid for an "upgraded" voicemail service. As I mentioned if I want that I can hire a service to do that, but I don't need that. I hope you can understand my growing concerns. We pay for every little in-app purchase, we are being programmed to pay for everything that should already be includedfdasf in an initial price, brought home and enjoyed for its duration. Instead wesdfsdf are paying monthly fees and dues on objects that aren't covered by warranties or insurances which eventually break and leave people struggling to pick up the pieces. These are serious issues because people now rely so much on their phones (of course this is all my opinion) that we've become depandent on them. Anyway, thanks, appreciate all the feedback.
As for blocking this is what it states on my plan under the blocking feature tab:
You can block calls and message from up to 5 phone numbers at no charge.
Expiration. Blocks expire after 90 days. Be sure to reapply the block if you wish to continue the service restriction. To permanently block numbers, subscribe to FamilyBase*.
Limitations.
You cannot block numbers within your account or non-10 digit numbers such as 911,411 or #MIN (checks minutes used).
Apple® iMessage® won't be blocked. Messages from this service can be blocked by disabling the iMessage feature from within the Settings>Messages menu of your Apple device.
Unblocking. To unblock a number, highlight and delete the number, then click "Submit".
So there's the limits, but even worst is they don't include a simple field where I can put the name of the individual I am blocking. So when it comes time to maybe rotate one out (this should be an unlimited number), one of the many 5 I can choose to block, I might not remember who is who or what is what. I have a lot of responsibilities in my life, this is not one that should be pushed on the consumer. It's ridiculous. -
What sould i expect to lose other than voicemails when i convert to iPhone 4s from a blackberry
Hello chopper59,
If you've already purchased and received your iPhone 4S, congratulations! You've made a great choice.
I'd also like to thank the other Community members for the feedback & suggestions.
Just as mentioned earlier, you would lose your voicemail messages, so it is suggested to save the messages you're wanting to keep to another storage device. There are multiple ways to transfer contacts, depending on how your contacts are currently backed up with your current Blackberry. For example, if you're using the Backup Assistant application, there is an application on the iPhone called "VZ Contact Transfer" that allows you to move your contacts from Backup Assistant to your iPhone.
I'm including a link with more information about activating and transferring information to an iPhone 4S here:
Activating and Setting Up iPhone® 4S and iPhone 4 8GB - Existing Verizon Wireless Customers
I hope we have answered your questions, and have addressed your concerns.
Thanks,
AnthonyTa_VZW

I was under the impression that "Standard" was faster than "Basic" and had no idea I was in "Basic" so, when I saw the choice, I picked "Standard", but it has changed my email format so much that I'm not comfortable with it. I don't know how to get back to "Basic".
The Apple iPhone uses a different voicemail system then the rest of the Verizon Wireless network. The only option is a visual voicemail. You can pick a standard greeting. Although I don't know if you are able to choose a standard greetings after creating a personal greeting.

Lost voicemails when updating to 4.2.1
When I updated to 4.2.1, I lost voicemails dating back to August that I need for court. It seems they are still there, since it says my mailbox is 97% full even though it is only displaying voicemails dating back to December. Is there any way I can recover these files? Are they stored in backup files as texts are?
Shalini1975 wrote:
...before the update, it was working PERFECTLY, which would lead me to believe the update did something to my phone.
Uh, no. Software updates do not cause hardware to fail. If in fact it is a hardware failure, it is merely coincidence. A really crappy coincidence, but still a coincidence.
Shalini1975 wrote:
So basically, if I hadn't done the update, I would be fine.
No guarantees, if it is a hardware issue, it could have still failed.
Shalini1975 wrote:
Either ATT or Apple needs to address this.
Why? Your device is out of warranty. AT&T has nothing to do with this, it is ridiculous for anyone to state that the service provider has any responsibility for what is a hardware issue with your device.
Why do you think Apple has a need to address this? You are out of warranty. The offer a $199 Out of Warranty exchange if this is in fact a hardware issue. That is the extent of their responsibility.
Depending on how long it has been since your warranty expired, you might find a sympathetic Apple employee that will overlook the fact that you are out of warranty, but I wouldn't count on that. They should be willing to look at the device and assist you in confirming that it is an actual hardware issue. At that point, it's your choice to do the Out of Warranty exchange or find another solution (3rd party repair company, find a different device, etc). -
Can't Set Up Voicemail after update
it says "old password" incorrect and wont let me make a new voice mail
Alright, I had this exact same problem on my new iphone and it was very frustrating to me so I signed up just to tell you guys how to solve this problem. Ok now you have to go to www.wireless.att.com and sign into your "myWireless account" (if you do not currently have one you will need to create one). Once you login you will see a screen with alot of different choices look for the box that says "PHONE/DEVICE" and add apple iphone if it is not already selected then click on the box that says "PHONE/DEVICE" and it will take you into a sub menu in here you need to scroll down a little bit and click on the box that states "Reset Voicemail password" after this you will have them send you a text with the new password and once you get it the iphone visual voicemail system will reset itself and you will have to set it up again and when it asks for the password give it the password you just received from at&t and it will work perfectly from then on and will not ask for the password ever again! I hope this works for all of you as it did for me.

SPA 500 Phones - Automatically dial voicemail password after voicemail number?
I am provisioning a set of SPA 500 series phones (a mix of SPA 504g & SPA 525g) for users in my office and would like to configure the voicemail button to automatically send the voicemail box number and/or voicemail password after dialing the voicemail number.
There are two ways of dialing the voicemail system, either with *98 or with the user's voicemail box SIP URL. When using *98 for the voicemail number, the user is required to enter their box number (i.e. 7890), then their VM PIN (i.e. 1234). However, when using the mailbox's SIP URL for the voicemail number, the outgoing message is played as if a call had gone unanswered, which requires the user to enter STAR+PIN (i.e. *1234) to access their voicemail.
Can the phone be configured to dial sequences like either *98[pause]7890[pause]1234 or [email protected][pause]*1234 ?
Ideally the voicemail button would do all this, however if it's not possible there, perhaps it could be done with a Speed DIal or an Unused Line Key. Any help in this direction would be great.
Thanks!Even though I am late to the party on this, I appreciate you posting those Release Notes. I have upgraded my firmware to take advantage of the new dialing features. However, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to insert a space into the dialing string. I am able to insert the other characters discussed in those Notes, but not a space. Can anybody enlighten me? I am using a SPA 504G.
Many thanks.
SOLUTION (EDIT): I found the answer. When in the dialing field, scroll far right in the soft keys an select IP, which gives you more choices for characters in your string. To insert a space, tap on the zero key. The first entry is a space. It is hard to see, even when inserted into your string, but it is there. To insert a comma to create a 2-second pause, tap the 1 key. And, so as to unify the solution here, I am pasting below the instructions from the release notes referenced above.

Speed Dial Wait, Pause, and DTMF
Speed dial entries can include wait (X) and pause (,) parameters that allow manual and automatic DTMF (Dual-tone multi-frequency) signal transmission.
Syntax:
{Dial_String}[ ][,|X][DTMF_string][,|X][DTMF_string]
Where:
Dial_String—The number that the user is trying to reach. For example, 8537777 or
14088537777.
(space)—A dial termination that defines or delimits the end of the dial string. The
space is mandatory. If the phone encounters an X or a comma (,) before the space,
the characters are treated as part of dial string.
, (comma)—A 2-second pause that is inserted for each comma in the string.
X (wait)—Awaits user input and acknowledgement
• The “Waiting for more digits input. When done, press OK to continue” message displays.
• The user manually enters DTMF signals by using the dial pad.
• The user selects OK, acknowledging the transmission of the manual entry is complete.
• The phone sends any DTMF signals defined by DTMF_string.
• The phone executes the next parameter. If there are no more parameters in the dial string to execute, the phone exits to the main screen. The wait does not timeout; the wait prompt window is not dismissed until user confirms the wait prompt or the call is ended either by the user or ended by the
remote device.
DTMF_string—The DTMF signals that a user is sends to a remote device after the call is connected. The phone cannot send signals other than valid DTMF signals.
Example
18887225555 ,,5552X2222
A speed dial entry triggers the phone to dial 18887225555. The space indicates the end of the dial string. The phone waits 4 seconds (2 commas), and then sends the DTMF signals 5552. A message is displayed, prompting the user to manually dial DTMF signals. When the user has finished dialing the DTMF signals, the user selects OK to confirm the manual DTMF signal transmission is complete. The phone sends the DTMF signals 2222. -
Can anyone tell me how to change my voicemail message on the N8. Thanks in advance!!
It is done via your airtime provider, call Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2 or whoever you use, find the number for voicemail and either activate or de-activate it, you should be given the choice to record a message or use a default !
Good Luck

Not sure if this has been asked before but I am hoping there is a way to do this. We have all our users using Voicemail notification to e-mail however the voicemails stay on the phone system. With our old phone system there was a option to email and delete from phone. Is there any options for this on the UC system. It is a bit of a time waste for the user to have to delete the voicemail from outlook then go to the phone and delete the message again. I know there is the option to set up a imap acocunt to the voicemail box however the users would not recieve those messages while out the office.
Hi Steve,
The only way I know this can be achieved is if you use IMAP instead of SMTP, with IMAP if you move it to another folder it will delete it from the UC-500, or if you delete it as well.
SMTP has its place, but 100% of the time I would only ever recommend you do IMAP and resort only to SMTP if you have no other choice.
The reason why SMTP does not delete it or give you the option, is that with SMTP it can fail and there is no ability within the CUE side to give a persistent level of retries and then give up... My recommendation and stick with what works and has been proven to work well for quite some time "IMAP".
Cheers,
David Trad.

I have a new 3g iPhone which is now paired with my Camery hands-free. This works fine EXCEPT for the voicemail - when I play back voicemail no sound comes out of anywhere. I saw some references to this for older versions of the software, but I am running 2.1
So, how do I get voicemail in the car?
Thanks!

What I read here may have truly been done on purpose, but a couple of things still don't jive, particularly the fact that there ARE bluetooth headsets that will still give the "audio" choice in the visual voicemail.
I have a Plantronics Voyager 520 which, prior to getting my new iPhone, worked like a charm with the VVM. With the 3G, it does not. I went to the Apple Geniuses (per Apple support's suggestion and scheduling), and we did some tests with a gen 1 iPhone that had the old software, and the Plantronics worked, so it is the software, not the hardware.
Additionally, I have a Motorola H850 bluetooth headset, and it still DOES register with the VVM. So, if Apple's intent was to purposely shut down this functionality, they didn't get that entirely right either.
My main point, however, is not to despair. Although it looks like there are not that many people with this issue, rest assured there is another thread where this is being discussed under "bluetooth." Check it out. -
Thoughts on using iTunes to identify voicemail messages?
iTunes is designated as the default player for MP3 files on my PC, where each of my business line voicemail messages arrives as an attachment to an email. As a result, whenever I click on such an attachment to listen to it, iTunes "sees" that voicemail messages and lists it in My Music," where it is identified only by the cryptic filename assigned to that MP3 file by the voicemail system's numerical naming convention. For example, one such voicemail has a filename of "77124.mp3", which shows up in "My Music" as "77124".
I really needed a way to organize, find, and easily retrieve these voicemail messages anyway, so I'm considering using iTunes to help with this. I'm thinking I could download a copy of each voicemail attachment after I've listened to it, then use iTunes' existing fields to identify the message as follows:
song name = actual file name (already populated)
artist = Name of caller
album = date of call (yyyymmdd format)
composer = Name of business matter (could be company name)
genre = 1voicemail (I created this genre to makes it easier to get to this choice)
Any thoughts about problems I might run into by pursuing this?
Any thoughts about different field assignments I might consider that could provide better sorting options?
Any different suggestions?iTunes recognizes Voice Memos as a separate file type. If yours arrive as simple MP3 files you can change that in iTunes.
Select one or more of these files, right-click, then select Get Info. Select the Options tab, then click on the Media Kind pull down menu and select Voice Memo. The advantage of this is that now you can create a Smart Playlist based on this file format.
How you use the various tags is entirely up to you. There are many more fields than the once you listed. I would suggest using fields that are not normally used for Music or Videos, just to keep them separate. -
Voicemail server outage? (6/17/2013)
I haven't been able to access my voicemail for over an hour this morning (6/17/2013). I continuously get the message "Network Error. Could not contact Voicemail server. Please try again later." And there's no other choice at that point other than to push "Ok".
My phone seems to be working otherwise. I can make calls; I can browse websites.
Anyone know what's going on?I'm having the same problem--Salem, Oregon--this is the number my patients use to reach me--not a good thing for a busy medical office. Has anyone tried to contact Verizon yet?
