Voiceover using FW iSight's mic

Hi guys,
I've transferred some old movies from my brother and I'd childhood into iMovie. I thought it'd be less boring to watch by adding some quips. I have a Firewire iSight alas when clicking on Voicover, no sound is recorded even though:1- iSight is selected in the Voiceover panel and 2: iSight is selected in Sys Prefs: Sound: Input. In the latter i can see the input level meter reacting to sound thus telling me the mic is ok.
Has anyone figured out why iMovie cannot connect with the iSight;s mic?
Thanx

Hello FrankMtl
I cannot duplicate your problem.
Like you, I have set my System Preferences... > Sound > Input to use my iSight's microphone as the sound input device and also have selected my iSight as the "Record From: device in the "Voiceover" window of iMovie 7.0 (iLife '08).  However, Recording a voiceover works fine on my DP G5 with my external iSight.
In addition to testing the input level in my System Preferences... > Sound > Input window, I also check and adjust the level directly in iMovie's "Voiceover" window, too. Verify that you can see the record level lights flicker there when you are setting that "Input Volume:" slider.
If you have enabled FileVault on your Mac, you may not be able to record a voiceover unless you move your iMovie project files to a location outside your home folder until iMovie editing is complete.
If the above does not help and you have not quit and restarted iMovie, doing so may correct your problem. If not, restart your Mac and test again with no other AV apps running during the test. If neither restart helps, consider the following ideas.
Be sure you are verifying whether sound is recorded when you playback your movie, not merely when you move the pointer back and forth (or “skim”) over the clips.
If that is not your problem either, check your Audio Adjustments for appropriate volume or other settings that might effect your level.

  • No sound for voiceover using external mic

Im trying to do a voiceover in timeline of FCP with my handheld mic. But i get no sound. i only get sound from built in mic. My handheld mic is plugged into back of Mac using a mini plug. I changed system (Audio) settings to external mic, but still no sound.

    Hello Michael,

When you open the audio preferences in system preferences and go to the input tab and choose the external mic, do you see the level's moving.  And are you sure you're plugged into a mic input.  Not sure what kind of mac has an mic input.  There is a digital audio input on some macs,  Not the same thing.
I'm puzzled by this, as what possible use can a digital audio input have, if not for jobs like this?
I'm trying to use a mini jack mic, but I can't even get this to show any activity in the system audio preference pane. It shows under 'Line in" an 'Audio line-in port', but it shows that (whatever that is) whether the mic is plugged in or not. I suspect it hasn't recognised it.
I'm using a 24" iMac running Snow Leopard, and working in iMovie 09.
Have you any idea what I need to do? I don't really want to work outside the iMovie environment.
    Thanks.

  • External Microphone when using (external) iSight

I recently got an external iSight for my MacPro. I bought the iSight so I could record videos through iMovie directly on my computer. I usually do covers of music, or related to music videos, so I use an external microphone. It's a M-Audio Producer USB. It's plugged in into the side of my Apple Keyboard, and in every application, the external microphone works. Except for iMovie.
When I try to record a video directly from iMovie using my external iSight, iMove decides to use the iSight's built-in microphone to record the audio, even though I have an external microphone plugged in. In System Preferences, the Producer USB is chosen as the main input for audio coming in. And in iMovie, the Producer USB is also chosen as the microphone in the VoiceOver section. Even with these two options pointin to the Producer USB for audio, iMovie still records audio using the built-in microphone on the external iSight.
Does anyone know why this is happening? And how I may be able to fix it? My music covers have come to a halt because of this D:
    Thanks!

    Hi Appleman & David B.
Thanks for your answers. I think David has a point... - that the program could be secured against feedback - consequently! Since it's not made for music recording. (even though using headphones normally solves that problem, right?).
Not a word about this issue in the support menu, and I've checked the system preferences>sound several times.
I'll see if I can find a small mixer somewhere. That sounds like the right solution.
Yes, I ran into the same problem in GarageBand, but changing the feedback-settings at the right side, solved that problem

  • How do I use an iSight iMac to send video messages?

I love the computer, but Knowledge base says the built in iSight won't work with iMovie HD to capture video.
Is there another way I can make and send video emails or messages that can be emailed using an iSight iMac?

"Is there another way I can make and send video emails or messages that can be emailed using an iSight iMac?"
iVisit supports the 17/20" iMac with built-in camera (I won't call it an iSight as it's not Firewire and has lower resolution), you can record yourself (video, audio, text, url's, desktops and files) and send via email

  • How do I use my isight camera live?

I have a 27 inch Imac. How do I use my Isight camera as a web cam? I have flashplayer 10, but it still won't work. Help?

Software always operates webcams, so you need to find software applications that does what you want.
Use your Mac's  > App Store... menu command to search for "webcam"
    (without quotation marks).
You can also search for other terms like "video chat",  "video conferencing",  "video surveillance", etc.
If you need other functions, some of the older apps in the list in this link are also still available:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage7.html
BTW, Flash 10 is out of date for OS X 10.7.2.
      • You can find the latest Flash version that works with you system using this page:
          http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
If you update, use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions.  Then follow Adobe's instructions here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/908/cpsid_90893.html
Be sure to uninstall your current Flash player before installing the new one.
Repair permissions again immediately following installation of the updated Flash player.
      • Be aware that the current Flash Player Preferences can  be configured in your Lion Mac's  > System Preferences...    These settings may be blocking Flash on a system-wide basis.
      •  Individual Flash settings are still configured in the same way as older versions:

  • How do I use my Mac's mic and speaker when answering a phone call?

Whenever I receive a phone call on my iPhone and answer it on my Mac, the speaker and mic on the iPhone are used for the call rather than the Mac. On an older Mac I was using, when I answered a call from my iPhone, it used the Mac's speaker and mic for the call. Is there a setting somewhere to fix this on the new Mac? When I make calls from the Mac, it uses the speaker and mic, but it doesn't when I answer them. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • Kisight:- If I Don't Have or Want to Use My iSight What Can I Use ?

kisight:- If I Don't Have or Want to Use My iSight What Can I Use ?
Or What Cameras are available for Macs ?
This question used to come up for Macs that did not have Internal Cameras and the User did not have an External iSight.
Since the advent of Intel Mac and the Internal iSight and OS 10.4.9 (late Tiger) the question has broadened from "What can I use with iChat ?" to "What cameras can I use with My Mac ?" and from there into the current Question this User Tip plans to answer.
On the whole it is a case of matching a camera for the type of application you are going to use it most with.
A web cam can be used in iMovie to create Email or Video Blogs although Camcorders do a better job. Camcorders can be used as web cams.
    Camera Types
These fall into three main categories that themselves have subsets.
Your choice is going to be influenced by the Applications you want to use it with.
    1) Firewire Cameras (Plug an Play)
    a) The iSight (External) made by Apple and several other similar cameras have mostly disappeared off the market. (Although iSights seem to be still doing well on Ebay - See Version and Mounts).
    b) Firewire Camcorders. These vary as to which apps that work with dues to the different Signal outputs they can do.
Apple Article TA26556 Highlights some that have issues due to their proprietary DV Format.
    2) USB 1.1 able Cameras. (Not Plug and Play)
This includes most cameras pre Vista (more on that later)
Most of these will need a suitable Mac Driver either from the Manufacturer or from one of two Generic sources (macam and IOXeperts). Some manufacturers will include a Mac Driver on the CD that comes with the camera some will supply it as a download from their Site.
It is worth while saying at this point that iChat will also need this reasonably cheap iUSBCam Utility as well.
This Utility was originally designed for getting the External iSight to work on computers less than the G3/600Mghz spec for iChat. Then it included the ability to get USB cameras to work with iChat.
You will need one of these three options listed so far if you are OS 10.4.8 or below or have only USB 1.1 ports/sockets on your Mac.
    3) USB 2.0 Cameras. (Plug and Play in most cases)
    a) Those that are UVC (USB Video Class) Compliant (Also listed as Vista Certified)
Apple added a UVC driver to the OS at 10.4.9 but your Mac also has to have an USB 2.0 port that you can plug such a camera into (Some keyboard ports are not USB 2.0). This means that the camera is Plug and Play although it may not have all the features it has on a PC
    b) Those that are USB 2.0 but are not Vista Certified/UVC compliant. (You are going to need Mac Drivers again)
This site about Apple Compatible cameras may be of some help.
A Note on quality of Pictures.
Firewire cameras of either sort are best with Camcorders being the best of all. (Generally more pixels delivered faster to your Computer)
The Newer USB 2.0 cameras are tending to exceed the 640 X 480 pixels that earlier USB1.1 cameras use with some currently giving 1.3Mp resolutions. It should be noted though that not all applications will use this format.
Look closely at the maximum Frame rate (fps) a camera can produce. You may not get it is every applications but something that starts with a max of 15fps is going to give you no leeway.

Versions and Mounts Which Version Am I Buying ?
First off I will not say so much on Buying a second hand External iSight other than making sure you use a reputable Selling site or an Individual Seller so that you have recourse if the device turns out to be faulty. Try and get to see the camera working if you can, preferably seeing it plugged in and working or by iChat and seeing the Pic it produces (Get the person to show you live Screen shots (or Screen Share in Leopard/iChat 4) of System Preferences > Sound > Input as the iSight will be listed)
What I will list here is info about the different versions.
There were three versions before the External iSight was discontinued. There is little outward differences as the main change is the mounts that are included with each version. They all function the same way.
The versions are distinguished by letters (Revision A, B or C) in addition to the base part number and an added slash (M8817LL/).The Last model included different mounts for Laptops, Desktop Stand, Magnetic mount and one for a Flat Panel iMac (the Lampshade one). See pictures in this PDF on page 6.
Apple no Longer sell the External iSight or the Apple M9314G/B iSight Accessory Kit either but you may find it at other places as well if the mount you want/need does not come with the camera. Pics of Box and Contents
It appears that individual iSight mounts and other items can be purchased though this iSight Service FAQ page
Remember the youngest External iSight is likely to be at least 4 years old. Current anecdotal information suggests the cost of an Apple Repair to a faulty External iSight exceeds the cost of a USB Replacement (Or the value in real terms, of the camera itself - although higher prices seem to be quoted on Ebay and Amazon)

I will review further an correct myself.
The last reads the way I meant as in physically getting to see it.
I am not sure you are reading it the same way.
As a consequence your suggestion seems a bit ambiguous to my mind.
Thanks for the input. I will read a digest context a bit more and see if I can rephrase.

  • How i use my isight to chat in adium with msn users

I like Know how i use my isight (built-it in a MB) to chat in adium with msn users

AdiumX does not support Video conferencing.
Mercury Messenger, a Java based MSN client supports video, but not audio.
Microsoft never included video/voice in the MSN Messenger for Mac, and now the client is completely abandoned by Microsoft.
In other words, you can't do MSN video conferencing from a Mac at this time.
You can use other programs like SighSpeed for Mac to PC video chat, but it is not a MSN client, nor does it support MSN buddy lists. Its a seperate client altogether.

  • IChat using external iSight on iMac 24" 2009

iChat using external iSight on iMac 24" 2009
I'm trying to use an external iSight camera in iChat instead of the built-in one but when connected iChat just gives a beach ball. Searching for similar issues mentions that both cameras should be available in the prefs. I wonder if this is still the case with a current iMac. I'm using a Lacie FW 400 to 800 cable.

Here are some options you can consider, m4rtin
    (1) If your Firewire port doesn't see any Firewire device with any cable, reset your Mac's Firewire using the process in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1317
    (2) When you get your System Profiler showing your FW devices again, if you still have problems and are daisy chaining your external iSight with another FW device, remove the intermediate device(s) and test external iSight again when it is connect directly.
    (3) As explained in this post, your LaCie cable may be the problem:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9496353&#9496353
The simplest way I can suggest to test this is to try a different brand of cable. The search that Ralph suggests will show you that both Belkin and NewEgg have been reported as working to connect external iSight with FW800 Macs.
    (4) Alternatively, you can use your old, known-working FW400 cable if you use a 800 -> 400 adapter
like one of these to connect your new Mac to your existing cables:

I would like to use the built in mic of the mac to make some audio recordings (television, talk, and sound from laptop speakers).
Could anyone please recommend the quickest and easiest way to do this?
I would rather not download any more software if possible and certainly cant buy anymore for the moment. I also dont have quicktime pro, just the standard free version that comes with the computer.
    Thanks

You can use Garage Band, which is part of iLife that comes with the Mac. Tell it to create a Podcast, then add a new Real Instrument Track (+ at left center), and click the Record button.

Can i use my snowball usb mic with Logic or Pro Tools???

    Hi there,
Did you find out anything more in regard to this?
I have been using Pro Tools 8 with the MBox 2 connected to my iMac operating Leopard. It worked a treat for nearly four years.
However the hardrive has just been replaced on the iMac which now has Snowleopard.  I don't want to have to update to Lion and then fork out £500 for Pro Tools 10.
I would be content to get Logic Pro 9 if I can attach the MBox 2 to it.
