VoIP, PBX and iChat in Leopard

We've recently had serious problems with our ISP and BT at my work (in the UK), which has prompted us to consider changing ISPs:
http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=whichbusinessisp&Number= 2617948
In the process I thought it would be worth looking into VoIP, but one thing I need to get to the bottom of is PBX when using VoIP. Can anyone offer any advice on potential solutions/alternatives?
What are the chances of iChat in Leopard supporting VoIP to ordinary telephones and some sort of built-in PBX system?
I've had a quick look at Asterix (which is compatible with Gizmo Project) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asterisk_PBX but it doesn't seem like the easiest software to install/maintain. Does anyone have any experience with it on Mac OS X?
Our hardware currently consists of:
10x Workstations running Mac OS X 10.4.7
1x Server running Mac OS X Server 10.4.5
Our current PBX system is BT's Versatality:

I've have not implemented their VOIP, only their mailserver (by far best mailserver I've ever admin'd). Here are the PBX FAQs form their site found this on their site:

  • IChat in Leopard - vcencoder process constantly hangs

    I recently did a clean Erase and Install of 10.5 and imported my applications back via Migration Assistant.
    Since the upgrade, my chats (so far, all of my chats have been with 10.4 users) become choppy and unresponsive after several minutes. Activity monitor reveals that vcencoder is unresponsive. Occasionally, so is coreaudiod.
    I do mention above that my chats have been with 10.4 users, but I don't think that's the issue. When I kill vcencoder in Activity Monitor, the chat can continue smoothly with me still receiving video and audio and the other side receiving only audio (which makes sense because I think vcencoder is the process which encodes my video signal).
    Anyone else experiencing this on a similar setup?

  • I got a new MacBook, and iChat will not open at all.

    About a month ago, I got a new MacBook (the regular one, not Air or Pro). Everything is working fine, except for iChat. It has never opened since purchasing my new computer and it continues not to. When you double click the iChat icon, "iChat" appears in the top bar containing File, Edit, View, etc., but the actual program never pops up. Considering that I have a new computer with little stored on it right now, I do not think that lack of memory space (if that's a proper name for the term) is the problem. I'm not to technical with computers (I know how to do cool stuff on them, but I don't know things like codes, HTML, and those kinds of number things). I am pretty sure, however, that I have a brand-new MacBook with 2008 iLife software and, I think, Leopard. Can someone with more knowledge of computers please help me! Thanks!

    If iChat appears in the menu bar press the cmd/1 keys together to see the buddy list or click on window in the menu bar and click on your buddy list.

  • How do I deactivate imessage and ichat on a dead phone/  Recently switched to samsung

    Howdo I deactivate Imessage and Ichat on a dead 4s?  Recently waithced to Samsing and not getting messages from iphone contacts

    Hi,
    In theory an iPhone that appears to the Server as Off Line will be "de-registered" from the server.
    Twice at various iOS Upgrades I have had the iPhone Number become greyed out leaving only the Apple ID is use (Despite the fact th item is greyed out and unchangeable by the user.
    This should mean that the iPhone should present as not in service and the sender should "Switch" to sending SMS.
    However as the Mac version may still have the iPhone number in it's Send and Receive lists then the iPhone may appear to be still logged in.
    You can "disable" the iPhone number in the iMessages account (Messages > Preferences > Accounts).
    Unticking the Receive At will also  remove it form the Start Conversation From drop down.
    It can be removed by deleting the com.apple.ids.service.com.apple.madrid.plist in Mavericks and above as this holds the current Apple ID and any "Aliases" in use.  You will need to re-enter your Apple ID in Messages on the Mac if you do this.
    Ultimately contacting Apple Support is the simplest and best way although some of the above may be needed to "tidy up" afterwards.

  • Mail, iCal Server and iChat server will not work over VPN

    I have an Airport Extreme Base Station at the office running the network. Behind it sits a Mac Mini Snow Leopard server running 10.6.3. The ports necessary for Mail, iCal Server and iChat work fine through that external connection. I can also connect with VPN from my 10.6.3 clients.
    HOWEVER, when I connect with the VPN clients, I am suddenly unable to access the Mail, iCal Server, Wiki server and iChat server. All connections time out. I can ping the server and I can do other things that do NOT work on the public Airport like ssh or VNC. ssh and VNC are closed at the airport extreme.
    So it's pretty odd. When I'm connected via the VPN, all ports that are forwarded to the Snow Leopard server time out over the VPN.
    I've tried various and sundry configurations with the VPN client. This includes trying to send all traffic over the VPN, moving it up in the service order, etc. etc. Nothing fixes it. DNS resolution is working fine, however when I do a wireshark capture of ppp0 traffic, I notice that SSL and TLSv1 handshakes appear to occur on the public IP address instead of the private network IP address... and they're all resets.
    Has anyone gotten this to work successfully? Like I said, all ports that are NOT forwarded through the Airport work fine over the VPN, but will not work when connected to the VPN. It's really bizarre.

    New data: any ports that are normally forwarded on the Airport Extreme to the Mac Mini server will not work when connected to the VPN.
    For instance, if I have imaps/993 forwarded from the Airport Extreme to the Mac Mini, it works fine over the Internet. If I connect to the VPN, I can connect to all OTHER services on the Mac Mini, but Mail, for instance, will not work.

  • (Slow Network): iSight camera not working in iChat since Leopard upgrade

    I have a different type of iChat video issue. My Power Mac G4, 867 MHz, 1 GB DRAM is a supported Mac for the Leopard upgrade. I've successfully installed OS 10.5.
    Also my Power Mac meets the iChat Conferencing Requirements for 1-on-1 Video Chat per the OS 10.5 system requirements and the application note here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301050
    My iSight camera is connected via Firewire to an Apple Cinema Display, which feeds back to the Power Mac G4.
    1) When I boot from my 10.3.9 Carbon Copy Cloner backup my iSight works in iChat (at least locally to see myself) without any issue. Green light comes on and shows me locally on video and audio sound bars. Before the OS upgrade the iSight worked fine for live video conferences with iChat 2.1.3 under Mac OS 10.3.9
    2) Running OS 10.5 when I go to iChat 4.0's preferences video pane the following message is waiting "This computer does not support video conferencing."
    3) With Leopard iChat 4.0 the Connector Doctor under "capabilities" says "(Slow Network)" for 1-on-1 Video Chat and won't even show video locally or turn on the iSight's green light.

    Fixed!
    My Power Mac Quicksilver G4, 867 MHz. problem with (Slow Network) in the iChat Connection Doctor, no video preview or video iChat since upgrading to OS 10.5 Leopard and iChat 4.0 has been solved with the following posted towards the end of the thread below. I can finally see my video preview with iChat 4.0 and have also video chatted successfully with one other user.
    Topic : Macbook - iChat says "This computer does not support video conferencing"
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1197506
    Fixed by Apple Article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307035
    Products affected
    Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
    iChat
    PowerPC-based Mac with a 867MHz processor
    Solution
    Quit iChat.
    Open Terminal (it's in the Utilities folder, in the Applications folder).
    In Terminal type or paste this command on a single line:
    defaults write com.apple.iChat newbwdup 300000
    Press Return.
    Quit Terminal.
    Open iChat.

  • Isight firewire cam not working in iChat on Leopard.

    After installing Leopard on my Powerbook G4 867 dvi, my Isight Firewire Cam is not working anymore
    in Ichat on Leopard.
    Any solutions, it worked fine under Tiger.
    Isight firewire cam works fine wirh Skype, Amsn , Photobooth and Quicktime.

    Alright. I've done quite a bit of testing now.
    My system is (as stated below,) a 12" PowerBook G4, 867 MHz, 640 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive, Combo drive, AirPort Extreme. It was purchased in Summer 2003, and while the OS has been reloaded, it hasn't been for a long time, and at present, the OS was an install of Jaguar that was upgraded to Panther to Tigard, finally to Leopard.
    I was experiencing the issue mentioned. In my case, I use a FireWire miniDV camcorder for video in iChat. It has worked fine in the iChat AV beta in Jaguar, and iChat AV in Panther and Tiger.
    Upon upgrading to Leopard, I get the "Slow Network" explanation for why I cannot use video (or hosting multiperson audio, or screen sharing.)
    My research shows the following:
    This occurs both on the upgraded install, and a fresh install. (To an external hard drive.)
    Using Ecamm's PowerBoost allows me to use every option that isn't barred outright by lack of hardware (video effects.) This includes both "Slow Network" issues and "Insufficient CPU" issues (essentially just multiperson video.)
    So my guess is that the "Slow Network" is indeed a "bug", and will be fixed by an update from Apple.

    Hi,
    IChat uses better Video Compression than Skype does.
    On a top flight Mac you can send a 640 X 480 pixel frame up to 30 frames a sec.
    Skype can't match this.
    iChat in Video is Peer to Peer. (you can actually Log out of the Buddy list)
    Skype seems to borrow something from everyone's bandwidth to make connections.
    What do you mean by Business account Tracking ?
    iChat Adds (or can add) the First Name, Last Name of your Buddies and create an Address Book Entry
    Whether you mark those cards connected with a  company is up to you.
    (I have heard of issues with earlier version of iChat and the Address Book that "saw" the Company Name as the part of the Name and linking several Screen Names to the one name
    Audio on a Mac using Skype tend to be the same as the streaming needs are less.
    However you have to rely on any PCs audio abilities from PCs which may not be to the same standard.
    Mac to PCs in iChat and AIM can be difficult though.  (It should work but it rarely as simple as Plug and go)
    Skype may suit your needs better on ocassions.

    Can you tell us how you Upgraded ?
    Archive and Install with Preserve Settings ?
    Does it launch properly from the Applications folder ?
    IF you have a Previous System Showing in the Hard drive at the same level as Applications does it contain a version of iChat 3 ?
    If all the above are yes answers drag the current iCon off the DOCK and drag the iChat 4 icon from Applications to the DOCK to replace and re-establish the Links.

  • Buddy List window does not appear when starting iChat in Leopard

    In Tiger when I started the iChat application, the Buddy List window always appeared immediately. In Leopard, it does not appear and I must choose Window from the menu bar and then select AIM Buddy List. Does anyone know how to correct this so the Buddy List window appears automatically when I start iChat in Leopard?

  • Diff between iMessages and iChat?

    Is there a difference between iMessages and iChat? If so, what is it? I'm thinking about upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
    Also, I don't have to buy Lion to buy Mountain Lion, right? Someone told me that...
    Thanks!

    That is correct. It is not necessary to install Lion to get to Mountain Lion. In fact Lion is no longer available unless you call Apple and request a special download key for it.
    iMessages is for iOS and iDevices.
    For OS X it is called Messages. It is basically iChat but it uses the iMessages protocol instead.

  • Video iChat with Leopard on iMac G4

    Hi I was wondering if it would be better to get an older version of iChat for an iMac 1.25GHz G4 instead of the current version that comes with Leopard. I was looking at the system requirements w\ iChat in Leopard and it looks like the picture would be 160 by 120, which wouldn't even be worth the price of an iSight camera. Any info?

    Have you asked the iChat gurus in the iChat discussion area?

  • PBX and CO SWITCH

    hi, see if i wanted to connect a PBX with a CO switch i normally do it via trunk cards rite ? can i also do it via line cards by simple purchasing some analog lines from pstn and plugging them into the line cards ?? can i do that plz confirm it
    2) the signalling types that we study like loopstart, ground and e&m, they are used when i m connecting a pbx with co switch via trunk rite ?? plz tell me i m a bit confused here
    thanks in advance plz answer in detail

    Hi Shaila,
    Like Paolo indicated you are 99% likely to be using Loop Start to connect the Switch/Line Card to the CO. Here is some further info;
    Loop start. This is the most common technique for access signaling in a standard Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Most residential telephones are analog loop-start telephones, based upon the concept of the subscriber loop, or local loop. The loop is an electrical communications path consisting of two wires, one for transmitting and one for receiving voice signals. The two-wire circuit is still referred to as the tip and ring, with the tip being tied to the ground and the ring tied to the negative side of the battery. When the phone handset is picked up (goes off hook), this action closes the circuit, establishing a loop between the PBX and the phone. Current is drawn from the battery of the PBX, indicating a change in status. This change in status signals the current detector in the PBX to provide dial tone. An incoming call is signaled to the handset by a standard on/off pattern, which causes the telephone to ring.
    Ground start. Ground start is another access signaling method used on on trunk lines or tie lines between PBXs to indicate on-hook/off-hook status to the CO. In ground-start signaling, one side of the two-wire trunk (typically the ring in the tip and ring configuration) is momentarily grounded to create dial tone.
    In a normal loop-start circuit, when you pick up the handset, you hear a dial tone indicating that a circuit is ready. On a ground-start circuit, however, the equipment at the user?s end should sense the flow of electrical current on the "tip" lead and interpret that the PBX is ready, so a dial tone from a PBX is not necessary, and its presence is optional. This setup allows the network to indicate off-hook status, or seizure of an incoming call independent of the ringing signal.
    E&M Signaling. Another analog signaling technique, used mainly between PBXs or other network-to-network telephony switches, is known as E&M, which stands for "ear and mouth" (or for "recEive and transMit"). There are five E&M signaling types, as well as two different wiring methods. Cisco's VoIP implementation supports E&M types I, II, III, and V, using both two-wire and four-wire implementations.
    From this good doc;
    http://cisco-elearning-sjdc.digisle.net/cmn/pec/cim/voip_v2r4/content/module1/mod1_tech2.htm
    Hope this helps!

  • Can SPA400 work with other SIP based VOIP PBX's?

    I am trying to get some hardware for my VOIP lab and wanted to check whether the SPA400 can work with VOIP systems other than SPA9000. Can I deploy an SPA400 without an SPA 9000. I want to use SPA400 as a pure Analog IP gateway and connect it to my existing SIP based PBX for setting up inbound and outbound calls to PSTN.

    I believe the SPA-400 only works with the SPA-9000.

  • Connection Problems Between iChat 3 and iChat 4 Workaround

    Maybe this info will help others:
    iChat 4/Leopard users must initiate video chat to iChat 3/Tiger users:
    I have discovered that if an iChat 4/Leopard user initiates the video chat to an iChat3/Tiger user, it works, but if the iChat3/Tiger user initiates the video chat with an iChat 4/Leopard user it fails with a message saying that the receiver declined the invitation (even if the receiver tried to accept). This happens on a LAN as well as across the Internet.
    Likewise, to make conference video chats, make sure the iChat 4/Leopard user initiates, then adds the other parties.
    This post is NOT about iChat Server, although the problem occurs there too. If you are using iChat Server (part of OSX Server) see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5995966 ).
    Hope this helps.

    Hey.
    I found how to work around combatible problems between 1.3 and 1.4. For user, that want to save thier DynamicTree.java (http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/example-swing/index.html)
    Use follow code (I using Externalizable):
      protected DefaultMutableTreeNode rootNode=null;
      protected DefaultTreeModel treeModel=null;
      public void writeExternal(ObjectOutput stream) throws IOException
      { stream.writeUTF(rootNode.toString());
        Vector values = new Vector();
        Object root = treeModel.getRoot();
        // Save the root, if its Serializable.
        if(root != null && root instanceof Serializable)
        { values.addElement("root");
          values.addElement(root);
        stream.writeObject(values);
      public void readExternal(ObjectInput stream) throws IOException
      { thisModel.removeAll();
        thisModel.setVisible(false);
        try
        { String title=stream.readUTF();
          rootNode = new DefaultMutableTreeNode(title);
          Vector values = (Vector)stream.readObject();
          int indexCounter = 0;
          int maxCounter = values.size();
          treeModel = new DefaultTreeModel(rootNode);
          if(indexCounter < maxCounter && values.elementAt(indexCounter).equals("root"))
          { TreeNode root = (TreeNode)values.elementAt(++indexCounter);
            treeModel = new DefaultTreeModel(root);
            indexCounter++;
          // kode for setting the tree start here
        catch (ClassNotFoundException e) {}
      }Hope, this is to use :-)
