Voltage of Backlight tube on G4 Powerbook DVI

Hi,
I have a G4 Powerbook DVI and as expected, the display hinges broke a while back..... I simply took the display off and still use the laptop with an external display.
Recently I took the lcd display apart (it has sat gathering dust for 2 years now) and was wanting to use the flourescent backlight tube as part of another electronics project.....
Can anyone tell me the the voltage/amps it requires ?
Thanks !

look here http://www.fonerbooks.com/laptop14.htm
and here http://www.lcdpart.com/Products/ms26361.html
so, I guess, you'll need to play also with your inverter board in your project ))
hmmm bright white light what it could be useful for? growing some plants maybe.
well, good luck with your project. hope you'll not abandon it, as I did ))

  • Expected Signal Voltages on backlight inverter?

I think my backlight inverter has blown in my PowerBook G4 12 inch DVI.. The part has 820-1567-A stamped on it but it is listed in the service manual as a 922-6247.
I've buzzed out the logic board and the inverter with my scope and have now hit the net hoping to find someone who knows what the nominal voltages for the inverters lines actually are so I can reference the specs to my diagnosis... I don't really follow Apples approach of replace this, oops it popped, replace this and this till the unit works... Going via their service manual & Especially on my own gear!!
If you know the voltages - I would love to compare my units levels to the info you have... ANYONE OUT THERE???
My logic board to inverter socket has:
    1 - RED +0.7V AT ZERO BRIGHTNESS AND +0.7V ALSO AT 100%(BUCKS V+ REFERENCE??)
    2 - BLACK 0V REF GROUND
    3 - YELLOW +5V SUPPLY
4- GREEN 0V AT ZERO BRIGHTNESS AND +3.2V AT 100% BRIGHTNESS (CONTROL LINE).
Going from those results my LOGIC BOARD is A.O.K I THINK!!
    Inverter has:
    0 - 2V entering the transformer and only 4.9-5.5VAC exiting it - I would have expected 180 - 300 VAC...
The coil measures 628 Ohm to ground on the HV side and 2 Ohms exists on the primary coil <- The coil could be OK or dead (need to refer to data or a good inverter...)
Output Transistors look OK - have not tested them though...
Has anyone else put a meter or scope across their inverter?? Your results would be much appreciated!!
    e

SOLVED!! The backlight is working again!!
All the lines had the correct voltage levels and signaling apart from the RED line. It was not a reference but a +12 volt supply. The thermal fuse on the logic board was blown so I replaced it, the inverter gets power and we have light!
The fault was caused (I think) by:
a lag in the OS/Firmware - bottleneck somewhere - when the brightness was adjusted during the lockup, the keyboard commands were cached and created a dump of hardware conditions. The inverter in turn tried to adjust itself once the bottleneck cleared - all within an instant - demanding a few seconds of swinging current that spiked the thermal fuse into its afterlife... The lesson is - press the button once and not 500 times!!

  • Anyone connected an Apple ADC CRT to Powerbook DVI, how??

I have my older 17" Apple Studio Display ADC CRT which I would like to use at home for extra screen space with my Titanium Powerbook which has a DVI port.
I bought the DVI to ADC adapter but have found out it ONLY works on the ADC LCDs and NOT CRTs. Crazy. So what connects these two together. I have seen many others in the Apple Display Forums with the same frustration but no solutions.
What gives? Apple abandoned connecting two of their own products which did overlap in time when sold.
Anyone else trying to do the same or are successfuly using these together?

I know your post is a bit old, but I'll contribute what I know anyway - You cannot use a DVI-ADC adapter with the ADC CRT because it is an analog display, and DVI by definition requires a digital signal. Therefore, neither the Apple adapter nor any other adapter can convert the signal from the CRT. It's outside of Apple's control. All of the LCD displays that are ADC use a digital signal, so they work just fine.
Apple only ever manufactured the one 17-inch ADC CRT, and only for about six months, so they're not affecting too many people... Unfortunately, you're one of them - and I have a beautiful, retired 17-inch CRT that I can't use with my PowerBook (Aluminum).
    I got a 20-inch Cinema, and I love it.

  • PowerBook DVI G4 vs PowerBook 12"

    Hi there,
    well i have one qestion..
    Should I trade my PowerBook G4 DVI model (667mhz, 1gb ram, 40gb, L3 cashe, 32vram, 15.4", gigabit ethernet, new battery) into newer PowerBook G4 12" (864mhz, 640mb ram, 32 video ram, wireless, 40gb, 12")?
You can compare those models here:
    my pb: http://www.apple-history.com/?page=gallery&model=pg4_dvi&performa=off&sort=date& order=ASC
    trade into this: http://www.apple-history.com/body.php?page=gallery&model=pg4_12&performa=off&sor t=date&order=ASC
I'm confused, because I think the matrix on 12" is a bit to small. Well I like sometimes work with computer graphics, bet I havent done that in ~ half a year.. So now my main tasks is word, excel, safari, itunes and movies.. So i think i would be better smoller PowerBook.
What do you think? C & C are wellcome!
ps.: sorry for my bad english...

You'd be giving up PCMCIA slot, larger monitor, DVI out, less RAM, for a little more speed and possibly a faster graphics card but with the same amount of memory.
If you really wanted something more portable and were looking to trade up to the newest 12" Powerbook that at least has DVI out then that might be worth it, because it's a larger speed bump. It's still not very suitable for working with graphics due to the smaller screen but it at least supports better quality output to an external monitor which would make it more than capable for this use.
I don't understand why your current machine isn't capable of doing everything you listed, and actually better because of the larger screen.

  • Using Mac Mini and a 26" Samsung Tube TV with Apple DVI to Video Adapter

So upon first hooking this adapter up from my Mac Mini to my samsung 27" tube TV, it worked fine–but everything was massive in size. I started changing resolution sizes in the preferences panel and one of them set the screen flickering vertically, like a mismatch in refresh rates.
Anybody else have this issue and resolve it successfully? It obviously works, it was for me for the first couple minutes, but I can't figure out what sent it flickering–and how to resolve it.
The TV is connected VIA composite (RCA) cable from the adapter to the video-in port.

Try starting in Safe mode. That should get your screen back.

  • Worst backlight issue ever.

I recently purchased a powerbook DVI 667 on ebay, knowing that the backlight didn't work. It was my thought that a simple inverterboard replacement would fix the problem, so I ordered a new inverterboard at the same time.
They both came, and to my surprise the new inverterboard also had a new cable. Unfortunately nothing I did could fix the problem. Replacing the inverterboard didn't help.
With a voltmeter I measured that the inverter produced well over a thousand volts for a brief second, and then stopped. Then from the old inverter I measured the same thing. I do not think it is the backlight CCFL tubes simply because the voltage coming out of the inverter fluctuates without the backlight connected. So I believed the only other problem could be the logic board. I was able to measure voltages from the logic board fluctuating whenever the screen should have turned on its backlight, but they did not sustain themselves, so it looked like a bad logic board. Not an item I wanted to replace, but I bought one anyway.
Having installed it today, the problem persists. I am fairly sure this logic board is of high quality. Could both inverters have been bad? If you were me, would you spend 55 more dollars on another inverter to see if it would work?
I have tested removing selected components and then booting the machine to see if there is any interference, but removing things does not help anything.
Could this have anything to do with the power supply? It does not run properly regardless of the batter or power being used. I have the same voltage, and amperage that the machine requires, but it is an older yo-yo style power cord.
I've triple checked to make sure nothing was shorting the logic board.

Well i just had this same issue last week; so i order my part from http://www.pbparts.com/shop/di.html
Works one thousand percent better. This was the best place to order my part and it was a perfect transaction. I just installed the part about two hours ago (to be honest w/you) and i'm back up and running.
Sorry this post sounds like a sales pitch :O

  • 1GHz DVI Makes Sizzling Sound When Started; LCD Never Illuminates

I have a 1GHz DVI I was given with both hinges broken, but that still displayed video (although of a degraded nature). I have been trying different replacement hinges/displays on it with differing unsuccessful results. When I power it on with one of the displays, I hear a sizzle near the start button; computer boots but LCD remains black. With another display, the LCD flickers a few times then goes black; no sizzling sound. The computer itself always boots and can be used with an external monitor so it's not the logic board. I have successfully replaced the hinges and/or displays of titanium PowerBooks before but this is driving me crazy. How do you know if the inverter is bad?

Hi, Toolshed. If you can see a display image on the screen with the aid of a bright light, but the backlight isn't lit, then it's likely that the inverter, or the cable that connects it to the logic board, or the cable that connects it to the backlight tube is bad. If you've been busily swapping displays in and out, you may have damaged the cable from the inverter to the backlight in one or more of them. And if the cable has shorted out, the short may have damaged your inverter. But before replacing the inverter or either cable, make sure there is indeed an image on the display. If the display is blank instead of just dark, you have a more serious problem — most likely a bad video cable, since your external display behaves normally.

  • Static when backlight turns off on Monster icarplay

hey, about two days ago my 30 g ipod started to become have a lot of static when i played it in my truck with my monster icarplay.i have the volume on the ipod set to about 80% and it is on a good frequency. the music sounds fine when the backlight of the ipod is on, but as soon as the light turns of the music becomes staticy. i've restarted the ipod several times and nothing has worked except to keep the backlight on all of the time when i am driving. Please help.

Don't be in too big a hurry to pick on the PMU. It could be a problem with impedance in the power circuit either inside the Powerbook or outside, like SuperSizeIt found with his surge suppressor. If your power line voltage is /i always /i at least the minimum specified on the AC adaptor, then check the following: are the contacts on the power cord clean? If not, polish them with a pencil eraser. Does the problem occur on every outlet, or just some? (Sometimes old outlets get corroded, especially in buildings with humidity problems.)
If AC power is not the problem, then remove the battery and inspect the contacts on the battery and inside the Powerbook. If there is a film or other contamination on them, gently remove it with a white pencil eraser. If there is significant corrosion on the battery, it's time to get a new one. A weak battery can also cause the problem.
Explanation: during high current operations such as reading an optical disk, excess resistance in the power circuit may cause the internal 12 volt supply to drop out of regulation faster than the battery controller can pick up the load. The inverter output voltage will then go below the level the backlight (fluorescent tube) needs to stay on. It then requires an inverter restart (extra high-voltage pulse) to reignite the backlight tube. The fast way to get an inverter restart would be to press the power key, then after the beep, press "s" to put the computer to sleep. Wake it up, and the display should relight.

  • Blank PowerBook Screen

The display on my Titanium G4 PowerBook (Mercury) 500 MHz has gone blank. Two days ago I opened it with the display facing brilliant sunlight. I turned it off after a few minutes since I couldn't see anything on the display. I assumed at the time that the display was washed out by the bright light. When I next turned the PowerBook on (and continuously since then), I got only a black screen, except that I can barely barely make out the outlines of the log in dialogue box. I assume the PowerBook itself is working fine; I can connect to and control it from my desktop Mac with Timbuktu, and all the details of the PowerBook's display are fully visible in a window on my desktop via Timbuktu, even though the PowerBook's display itself remains black. In fact, as I'm typing, I can read the New York Times with Safari in the PowerBook's Timbuktu window on my desktop computer. But when I look over my shoulder at the PowerBook, all I see is a black display. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi, Stan. The usual cause of a problem like yours is a failed inverter, which controls the backlight tube.
If you are a highly competent general do-it-yourselfer, you can probably replace the inverter yourself:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G4-Ti-Mercury/Inverter-Board
Because the procedure is long and involved, having a technician do it for you would probably cost more than I'd be glad to invest in such an old Powerbook. Therefore, weigh carefully whether you'd rather pay only for the part and invest your own labor, or whether the job is too complex for you and not worth paying a technician to do. In the latter case, it might be wiser to replace the Powerbook.

  • Uneven Backlight Fixes Itself?

Okay, when I first fired up my MBP the screen looked horrendously lumpy! The backlight was incredibly uneven, with shadows all over the place.
After three days of using it, the lumpiness has all but disappeared, and the screen seems fairly even bar a slightly darker strip about third of the way up the screen.
I still have a bright 1/2inch strip at the bottom (which I believe is light spillage from the backlight tube), which is a bit annoying but not worth sending the machine back for in itself.
So (not that I'm complaining) can anyone explain why the uneveness of the backlight would improve?

I think the best way to see where you get light leakage is to take pictures of it with your digital camera, or look at the view area of the camera. It sure reveals a lot spots and leaks.
But that is another story. I think its not so much that it improves, I think its your eyes playing tricks on you. Maybe there is improvement but, for the most part its just your eyes. Also hold the scree up to a mirror and you'll be able to see more lighting problems. It's really weird how when you look at it from a different perspective it looks different.
I don't know thats just my 2 cents. I have gone through swapping 10 MBP and I've settled with the most recent one. Its not perfect by any means. The battery feels loose but I'm willing to forgo that for a decent screen. Which this one is quite good compared to some other ones I had.

  • Sleep crashes Ti Powerbook + 10.4.3

This is on my Titanium Powerbook (DVI video). I have had the problem for a long time, but have just (sort of) isolated the problem.
If I install a "virgin" 10.4 system on my computer, everything appears to work fine (archive install, perserve users). But when I upgrade to 10.4.3 I get problems with sleeping. (I used the "Combo Update" to upgrade to 10.4.3.)
One easily replicable symptom is that if I try to put it to sleep from the keyboard (either from apple menu, or pushing the power button and choosing sleep, the following happens
    a) it doesn't go to sleep
    b) the application switcher seems to have gone away (command-tab does nothing)
    c) it hangs on shutdown with a spinning pizza of death
there are other symptoms if I close the cover powerbook, which usually require a forced shutdown.
I'm off to install 10.4.4, but I doubt that this will solve my problem.
Any thoughts other than keeping the OS at 10.4.0?

Update: Similar symptoms under 10.4.4, and it is also present with a "safe boot" under 10.4.3.

  • PB-backlight in keyboard or upper case?

Unfortunately, I didn't get too much feedback on my last post ( Florian Duenzen, "PB-keyboard / replacement part numbers", 04:40pm Sep 26, 2005 CDT), so I'll try to make it a bit easier with this one:
Is the backlight of the recent PowerBook revisions (including the last one) part of the keyboard itself or is it soldered to the upper case? I could not make it out in pbfixit.com's pictures, and my PB is still under Apple Care warranty, so I can't take it apart myself to check it.
My keyboard is broken and I have to figure out, what service part I can use to replace it. Of course, I would like to go for the brighter backlight from the latest revision, if it is indeed soldered to the keyboard and compatible with my revision (see signature).
    Thanks a lot,
    Florian.

Don't know if i get you exactly, but if you want to check case-insensitive, you could do:
    SELECT count(*)
    FROM my_database
WHERE UPPER(user_id) = UPPER(:my_database.user_id);Be aware that any index on user_id will not be used with this approach.

  • Ti Powerbook logicboard replacement question

    Greetings,
I'm swapping a used logicboard into my TI Powerbook DVI. In my earlier attempts to fix the previous board, I got used to the process of opening the machine, removing, and replacing the board. Unfortunately, I can not seem to get the new board to sit properly inside the machine, despite appearing to be identical. I was wondering if anyone else might have had similar problems or any suggestions on how I might resolve the problem.
    My thanks in advance.

Just to be clear, you're talking about the fan in the right-rear of the PB (this is the "secondary" fan which cools the power supply area), right?
Although two different part numbers are used for the 800 and the 867/1GHz, some used part vendors list the same fan for all DVI machines; obviously this suggests your plan should be fine if the connection/plug fits (I believe it does) and the fan mounts properly (I believe it will).
If we are talking about the "secondary" fan (not the CPU fan), even if the fan design was changed (possibly to a stronger one) for the 867/1GHz, in my mind the difference would not be significant enough to warrant concern.
Curious, are both Sunon or Superred or one of each?

  • 22" DVI Acrylic Version Flickering

I inherited a 22" Cinema diaply, DVI version, "portrait" stand with the acrylic housing. It works pretty well, but seems to have some lines that flicker across the screen from time to time, and it occasionally flashes "ghost" images. It's not unbearable, and I am pretty handy, so i was wondering what could be done to fix this problem...is it one of the bulbs? Inverter?
I have had it connected to both a MacMini (G4 1.42) and an older Powerebook TI (667 DVI)...pretty much the same result.

    Hi Byron,
If the normal display on your powerbook is OK, then it won't be the graphics card.
If you can, try hooking the ADC display to another computer (preferably one with an ADC port). If the display functions OK, then the problem is not within the display.
That leaves the adaptor and the connections between the powerbook and the display.
You need to check that all physical connections are clean, intact and tight. Check for loose wire connections by gently wiggling the cables where they insert into plugs (if it's loose, you will see changes in the display).
Check that there is no play in the DVI output on the powerbook - plugs can exert a lot of leverage on this socket, and it is possible that there is physical damage.
Depending on what you find, you may be able to sort this out yourself. However, a lot of these plugs are not user serviceable, and the Powerbook DVI output certainly isn't.
    Cheers!
    Karl

  • Powerbook G4 almost totally dead...(weird num lock prob too)

Whenever I try to turn on my Powerbook, I can hear a small spinning noise, I cant tell if its the DVD drive or the HD, it seems to be too quiet for the DVD drive, anyways, no startup chime, or anything, it just sits there, theres power to it, and I tried resetting the PRAM and the PMU, nothing changed, oddly, I had the same problem as this guy (or similar enough at least):
+Hi this will be no help to you at all, but EXACTLY the same thing just happened to my Powerbook DVI (800MHz), I've rest the PMU tried everything , and still, I can only turn it on as far as getting the green light on the Keyboard for capslock or numlock (curiously, numlock function seems to have migrated to volume up button...???) to come on, but the screen stays black, there is no startup chime, (although I did at one point manage to start it as far as the chime and the applelogo, but then it faltered and forgot what it was supposed to do...) I hope someone comes up with a solution. In the meantime, it'll go onto the old computer pile...Throw nothing away, ever! Good luck.+
My numlock also has switched to the volume up button, as in, pressing volume up makes the numlock key flash on, and pressing it again makes it turn off. The caps lock key also works, so I know its getting power, but like I said, nothing on screen at all and no chime or anything, any suggestions?
