Volume again

In PT LE I was able to get my volume up to "near" commercial CD's. I know loud is not always better....can't get volume up in Logic...strange...using adlimiter...and multipressor...after bouncing CD seems low in volume.....the mix is excellent ....I was also wondering since i'm using toast to burn if there are any settings that I'm missing.......I also noticed that on my out1-2 channel ..i am able to get the meter to read just before it goes to red ..so i know the volume should be fine...... any suggestions appreciated. Also I plan on making a CD with about 10 songs and would like the volume levels relative...somewhat to each other..nearness in volume to each other......Thanks

So, all the lights hit red so it must be loud? Wrong. Looking at the meters and perceptual volume of program material are two completely different things. I, and probably a lot of people on this board, could make a guitar sound, for example, ear-splitting loud and yet be registering -6 on the meter.
Transient response, low end energy, things that are not contributing to the sound but are using considerable amounts of energy can all drive the meters into the red and yet you have low volume.
I never use limiters or compressors on my stereo mix buss for the MULTITRACK mix. Once I have a good, balanced mix it gets bounced down to stereo with no dynamic control on the stereo mix bus. I don't worry about overall volume here. That is saved for mastering, even if it is me doing a test master or aiming for a hotter level.
I either put the finished track (or tracks) in Waveburner, or back into Logic (as you cannot use adLimiter in WB) and then think about overall tweaks to eq, dynamics and general mastering stuff. I do obviously have compressors on individual tracks etc in my multitrack where required, I'm not saying don't use dynamic contols, it's just there is a big difference between a meter reading zero and the volume coming out of the speakers.
Play a CD through your system that is 10 years old. And another from last week. They'll both peak at zero but the difference in volume will be very noticeable.
OK, so the dynamics on the newer CD will be mashed to **, but that's the loudness war for you.
Bring the same 2 CD's (old and new) up on a mixing desk side by side. Match the levels on the faders. Then, without looking at the meters, push the old CD volume until it matches the new CD volume. The difference on the meters is a measure of just how much the new CD is pushed during mastering..... and yet under normal circumstances, both peak at zero. It is a massively complex subject that is solely dependant on the content of the program material and it takes years and years to perfect.
I hope this helps in some small way.

Do I have to check "Ignore ownership on this volume" again, after copying is done? Thanks. Alex

Sorry I thought the context was clear. I followed the instructions on how to transfer a timemachine backup from one disk to another (linked above). One step in the howto is to uncheck "Ignore ownership on this volume". I was wondering if it is important to check it afterwards.

  • Is there a way of lowering/increasing volume on voice and music

Is there a way in iMovie 8 to lower/increase voice and or music, like on iMovie HD you could when you were seeing the audio tracks?

So now what happens if the audio controls never pop up?
When I click on the audio button I don't get an "audio adjustment window".
Is there another way to bring it up?
    According to apple support:
    To normalize clip volumes:
Select a clip you want to normalize and then click the Audio Adjustments button to open the Audio Adjustments window.
In the Audio Adjustments window, click Normalize Clip Volume.
Select the next clip in your project that you want to normalize, and then click Normalize Clip Volume again.
Repeat step 3 for each project clip that you want to normalize.
    When you’re finished, click Done.

  • When using full volume on my iphone 4s the sounds cuts out but if I blow air into the speaker it comes back on is this a hardware issue or a software issue?

Just recently my iphone 4s speakers started acting up. I have restored it twice once to a back up and the other time as a new phone. The speakers get really staticy on full volume and then it cuts out but if I turn down the volume and blow air into the speakers it goes back to play fine until I turn up the volume again. I'm going to try to clean it out with a toothbrush and see if that helps. But I'm curious does this seem more like a hardware problem or is it a problem with the operating system and I should try to hold out until ios 6 comes out and see if that helps. I've read all the problems with this so I'm hesitant to send it in since there is no apple store around here and find out I have to pay to get it fixed. Tried to talk to them on the phone but since it's a week past ninety days I would have to purchase apple care in order to get any help but yet that's only available for 30 days after your purchase so I'm not sure how come they can offer that over the phone. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the help. The problem just started suddenly. The problem I have is the closest Apple Store is 3 hours away so I would have to send it in and I don't want to send it to them and then be told I'd have to pay for it. Would they just send the phone back if you decide not to have it fixed. I will probably just get used to it or maybe it will fix itself one day.

  • Volume in Spotify is jumping up and down

I've been using Spotify for some time without any problems. But on my new MacBookPro when I listen to any track, the volume goes up and down. When I setup normal volume it goes down so that I can hardly hear anything, then after a while the volume again becomes normal, later everything repeats again, and so on and on. What is the problem here? Other audio players and web sites work fine.

I have to say this is not a problem I have ever come accross before, but I have never owned a Mac!

  • Finder: Doesn't search external ntfs drive's volumes

    Hi everyone
I have an NTFS-formatted external drive connected through USB to my Mac Pro. The drive has four volumes, which show up properly in Finder.
The problem is that I can't search these volumes with Spotlight.
What happens is that I select the relevant volume in Finder's sidebar and type in my search phrase, for example ".mp3" without the quotes, in the search box.
The computer then starts searching "This Mac", instead of the volume I clicked, and lists all the mp3s I have on the internal drive.
There's a bar above Finder's "column bar" and below the buttons bar where the Spotlight search window is. This bar appears after the search and there I can click the name of the volume, which is next to a button labeled "This Mac". Clicking the drive name starts a search however it invariably ends up displaying zero items, regardless of what I search for.
I have tried adding the external volumes to Spotlight's "Privacy" list and then remove them from that list in order to hopefully jump start the indexing. But nothing happens. There is neither renewed indexing, nor am I able to display any results when using Spotlight as described above.
Any thoughts? I've tried to eject the volumes, restart the computer, attach the volumes again etc. I really hope there's nothing serious because the computer is all new and I just want to transfer all my files and then use the external drive for Time Machine. But in order to do so I need to know that I have moved everything first.
    Thanks for your help.
    /p

I am unable to get Spotlight to index my "Journaled" external HD.
I use External HD for storing music videos. I need to be able to Spotlight the video by the name/metadata. (And I have just a couple of minutes to execute the process.)

  • Volume on iPod Touch not working

I updated my touch and my volume wouldn't show up on my screen. Sound would not play at all on it. I restored it and nothing changed. I would turn it on and the volume would show up, but as soon as I would go to turn it up, it disappeared. I then updated it to the most recent version, the volume showed up and stayed there, but only on headphones. I was driving home on Wednesday with it hooked up to my stereo. Everything was going great and then all of the sudden, the sound started cutting out. My iPod was losing the volume again. Now I am having the same problem as before. Does anyone know what to do or if they are going to send out a new update that will take care of it. My iPod touch is a 2nd Gen. Please help me out with this. I don't want to get rid of it. I love my iPod.
    Thanks,
    Greg

I have a first Gen and it was working just fine till 2 days ago, the Volume slider disappeared? I refreshed the OS and still the same problem, no hard buttons on v.1 Please help!

  • Volume of song changes when I export movie.

I imported a couple songs to play in the background of my movie. The original 100% volumes were too loud for both of the songs so I turned the volumes down to about 60% using the volume sliders below the audio tracks. But when I exported my movie (I tried both Quicktime web and full quality dvd) the volume of the songs in the background seemed to be playing at full 100% volume again. Is there an "apply volume change" button that I'm not seeing or something?

    Hi into...
I don't have access to iM4 anymore... but as far as I remember: you have a slider for "iMovie" AND you have another one for adjusting the level of a CLIP. so, you need to select an audio clip, THEN apply any volume changes...
sliding the slider under the main view window lowers the playback in iM, but not of the clip....
... or do I misunderstand something completely???

  • Lr 3.4.1, moovies, and nas-volume

    a small bug-report:
i have a network storage for my pictures, and inside the are a few quicktime-moovies. Trying to import this network volume to Lightroom 3.4.1 showed me, that moovies cannot be imported. The pictures itself imported in a reasonable amount of time, but as soon as there are moovies inside the nas-volumes, it worked and worked and worked, overnight, the next day. No progress visible.
I created a new catalog, moved the moovies from nas to local hard disk, and imported the nas-volume again. Success, in a few hours all was imported.
Then i imported the moovies from local hard disk. Again success, worked fine within a few minutes. The last thing i had to do is to tell Lightroom the new (ahem, old) storage place for the moovies.
Is there any tricky workaround that can import moovies direct from a nas volume?
    Greetings from Gemany
    Christian Stüben

LR 3.4.1 may write keywords differently than previous versions due to fixing an error with corrupting metadata so there could be a bug particular to LR 3.4.1, but Adobe needs to be able to repeat it with a simple example in their facilities or hear enough reports of it that they feel there is an issue and they can find a problem with their code.  From what you've said (except the unexplained situation about how it didn't work to move the file from your USB to your C drive) everything points to your USB drive having an issue, though.
Adobe would likely want to do a remote troubleshooting session on your computer unless they've already diagnosed the issue on another computer.  You might try posting your issue on the more official "Feedback" forum that Adobe seems to look at more:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/products/photoshop_family_photoshop_lightro om
but be ready for the same skepticism and litany of questions that you've gotten here.
The intermittency is your biggest issue to getting anything resolved.  A reason for intermittency could be a timing problem where some other process like a virus-scanner, or a media-scanner, or some other thread in LR, itself, like the preview-generating thread, is accessing your image at the point that LR is trying to write the keywords to the image file, or the fact that the image is in disk cache or not, where a USB-drive would have less cache than an internal drive and access is generally much slower via USB than internal IDE or SATA drives.
As a way to see if it happens on more than just your particular USB drive, try everything on a memory-card in a card-reader to simulate a USB-drive.  If you can get that to work then there's a little more hope in someone else repeating it.  Be prepared to give a step-by-step procedure from virgin-JPG prior to import up until the error-message is received with specific keywords and keystrokes used to get the error.  Be prepared to provide an example JPG, too.

    Dear Barney-15E,
Your answer got me on the right track.  I followed the suggestions as well as I could.  Finally I ended up holding down the fn key as I pressed f10, f11& f12.  Each one now works as it had before something happened.

  • What is "Determining Song Volume?"

And why does it take so long?
I want to update a restored iPod on iTunes 7, but it's spending forever going through 4,000 some songes to "Determine Song Volume." I have not seen iTunes do that before.
Is there a way to make it stop?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

iTunes "determins song volume" so that it can play back all songs with about the same volume. To do this is it has to go through all your music and determin the volume of each song.
You probably never noticed this before since it is quite fast doing just a few songs at a time (the way most of us add music to our libraries). Unfortunately iTunes 7 aparently goes through all songs and determins the volume again (probably becuase there was a problem with this is some earlier versions of itunes)
You can make it stop by turning off "soundcheck" in the playback preference pane.

  • My mac volume level won't change after sleep

My "Line Out" (2.1 Speaker System) does not seem to accept volume changing commands either by the Apple Wireless Keyboard, or System Preferences > Sound. This happens all the time after I put the computer to sleep. Before when I switched to Internal Speakers then back it would "unlock" and let me adjust the volume, but that is no longer the case (I should point out that the volume controls are not disabled, it's just that changing the level does not do anything). I can however adjust and use Internal Speakers just fine. This forces me to restart my computer in order to adjust the volume again.

Resetting the SMC and PRAM did not solve my problem, however this did manage to solve my problem across reboots and sleep:
    1. Command + Space / Open Spotlight.
    2. Search for "Audio MIDI Setup".
    3. Select your sound system.
    4. Change the format to something else, then change it back.
At this point it should fix the volume level and allow you to change it. I have only done this once, and it has worked since I made this topic.
Let me know if it helps.

  • IMac+CCC+WD MyBook=Extra Volumes??

My 500GB iMac warned me that I was running out of disk space.
When I check via "Disk Utility". It shows about ±460 GB's used.
If I add up folder size (iMac HD) in finder... It only adds up to ±150 GB
I downloaded "Omni Disk Sweeper" and it shows a total of ±460 GB's used.
BUT..... ±270 GB's of that is data in "volumes" folder?.
The two volumes appear to be "My Book" backups.
QUESTION #1: What are volumes and why don't they show up in finder?
(EDIT: I've now learned I can find the "volumes" via: Finder> Go to Folder> Volume)
I have no idea how they were created.... but assume it has something to do with my Carbon Copy Cloner settings?? (I'll look into that later).
QUESTION #2: It's OK to trash these volumes, right?
(I have confirmed an up-to-date backup on the external WD My Book Drive).
Could it be the WD drive created the volumes? as posted here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11118571&#11118571
    Thanks for any insight.

Volumes is where Mac OS X mounts external disks, networked volumes, USB thumb drives, and .dmg file system image containers.
It is hidden because Mac OS X does not want you to delete, or mess with it in any way.
What most likely happened to you is that you made a Carbon Copy Cloner run, when your external WD My Book was not mounted, so CCC blindly created a directory that looked just like your WD My Book mount point, and then proceeded to copy your hard disk into this local Volumes -> My Book ... directory tree.
What Neil is suggesting, is that you eject your WD My Book. Then to be safe, unplug the WD My Book from your Mac (we do not want any accidents). And for good measure remove power from the My Book.
Now using OmniDiskSweeper, delete everything in the local (not really the external disk) Volume -> My Book directory and everything under it, BUT leave Volumes alone, as you will need Volume again when you connect your WD My Book back to your Mac later.
Now when OmniDiskSweeper has removed the CCC backup that went bad, and you have recovered your disk space, you can safely reconnect your WD My Book, and all should be well.

  • Mount encrypted os x timemaschine volume

    Hi guys,
    having a little problem here.
I switched from OS X 10.7 to arch a few weeks ago. Migrated all the data(at least i thought so) and was happy. Now I recognized I forgot to backup a important TrueCrypt keyfile. Well....fu**
So here is the problem. I saved my backups over the OS X timemaschine at an external raid, and the timemaschine backup was encrypted with the OS X on board tools.
I found the libfvde project, but it requires the wipekey file. Since Arch is the only OS running on my macbook right now, I don't have any files of OS X left(beside the files in the encrypted external hdd).
Does anybody know if there is a way to gain access to the files in the encrypted hdd without installing OS X again?
I know that's a little bit specific and maybe better in a mac forum, but I thought I give it a try here.
    Thanks

Ok, worked it out with a Macbook with 10.7 from a friend. Just in time, i copied the important files to an USB stick, saved them on a second ssd, powered off the raid, powered it on again, now OS X tells me that it can't read the volume any more.
    Wtf?
Anyway, got my files, now formating the raid, encrypt it and use it as backup volume again. This time with opensource encryption

  • Mac Pro (Late 2006) all volumes stuck on mute and I can't change it.

I have a late 2006 Mac Pro 3Ghz dual. Recently the volume dropped down to nothing and when I access the control panel, I see the mute button checked on all outputs except the digital (the one I have never used). All inputs are also muted and I cannot uncheck any of them. The little volume indicator is sitting in the lower middle of my screen and won't go away.
    I have tried:
    Zapping PRAM
    repairing permissions
    trashing the sound pref
    reseting the SMC
    using a different account
    multiple restarts and shut downs
unplugged and re-plugged both the headphones and line out
....and none of it has worked. The sound indicator shows up with the first startup screen and never goes away...and I have no sound. If I drag the volume slider up, it just goes back down. Very frustrating.
Ohh and there is nothing resting on a keyboard button. I have even unplugged the keyboard and had no change.
I am guessing this is a failing motherboard, being that I have lost my "A" RAM slot, but I really hope not. This is going to be unbearable to live with.
Does anyone here have any other ideas? I have thrown in the towel (which I rarely do).
    Thanks!
hey, at least the comp cannot hear the profanities directed it's way.

OK, so yesterday, just out of the blue while I was typing an email, the sound started working again. The screen indicator disappeared and I could raise the volume again....woot!
So, I followed your advice and installed the combo updater, the sound stayed working. Thought I had it nailed.
Then, this morning, I woke it from sleep and 30 seconds later, the sound dropped out and the issue returned. So, back to square one, no clue what caused it to self-fix and no clue why it relapsed.
    grrrrrrrrr
