VOLUME and SPEAKER PHONE

I had to return my 8GB Iphone yesterday as the volume on the handset and speaker phone was absolutely poor! I need my phone for BUSINESS and not being able to hear is a large issue for me. The Apple salespeople at the store tried to keep me quiet and hushed me to the back for the return. I was by no means causing a scene just wanted to return it. The Apple techs and salespeople acknowledged the problem and said it has been the reason for most of the returns and were not sure of any updates. When the Store Manager came over to give me a credit he didnt speak one word to me. Sorta Rude...
I compared it to my Blackberry Curve and there is NO comparison of the headset volume or Speaker phone volume.
I am so dissapointed but will try generation 2 when it comes out! The Iphone is a great phone but Apple HAS to figure out the quirks and bugs.
For all you critics it is a Great phone and has some great tools and features but it is a PHONE and my MAIN purpose is to talk on it! And when you cant hear then their is a TRUE ISSUE. And yes I took the plastic off too.
I hope Apple gets this solved. As I would consider re-buying!
Cheers
BD

Of course most believe it is a solvable issue. The problem is that for those of us that need to use this for the phone feature the majority of the time, volume is an absolute neccesity. The 14 day return period is running out and some of us do not have the luxury of having more than one cell phone that we can use for the phone purpose until the issue is resolved. Any why should anyone expect one to do that? The phone was $650 with tax, then $80 a month for something you cannot use daily, is truly asking a bit much unless you have money to burn.
I'm not knocking the iPhone, I think it is a great item, but as a phone, it needs to have appropriate volume. And if Apple is not talking and releasing a statement about it, why should anyone wait around for something that may or may not be fixed in the very near future or even how long 'very near' may be?.... Especially when you cannot even get two Apple reps to acknowledge their is an issue with the volume?

I can hear caller but he can't hear me except on hands free and speaker phone, hoew to fix this problem

    Hi Shirley,
    Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

  • PS and speaker phone

Is it that the PS will not activate if you are on a call via the speaker phone?

Yes if you are on speaker mode, the ps will not activate. as the phone things your talking directly and that it is not on your face. Same goes for if you are using headphones and you call, the ps will not activate.

  • N97 and speaker phone problem...

just curious here...I'd read this topic sometime ago, in regard N97 have some sort of speaker phone issue for the other party you're phoning with do not hear your voice very clearly and get intermitten cut off???
do/does anyone have this issue or it's just me???

Ross, i'm not sure, but here in the states AT&T refers iPhone users to contact Apple for tech support, etc.
You may try restoring the iPhone using iTunes and or restoring most settings in Preferences. That may help. Some have found fixes by removing the SIM card (iphone off), and reinserting it...
My first guess would be a software issue. Aside from that... you'd have to contact Apple and have them send you a new one if you're nowhere near an Apple store in the UK.

  • Ringing Volume and Speaker Volume

Ok..so, I saw the fix but it is temporary.. do we have any news for a permament fix from Apple yet?
    The volume suxs!

I'm experiencing the exact same problem!
When the maximum ringing volume is set, the phone will ring for about 3 seconds at a certain volume, and only then the volume will rise to the maximum. And it's set on "ringing", NOT "ascending"!
    Ideas, anyone?

  • I have no sound when playing music but ringtones and speak phone works!

I have an iPhone 4s and all of a sudden I cannot hear any sound when playing music or watching tv etc via my phone but I can hear my ringtone and text etc and I can also hear calls if I place them on speakerphone!
I have performed a hard reset and also plugged my phone into iTunes but this still hasn't solved the problem.
Unfortunately my phone has a cracked screen....totally unrelated to the sound problem as everything was working fine after I dropped the phone, however, as I have been informed, this has now invalidated the warranty from apple, even though I am not asking them to fix the screen, just the speaker, therefor I am not entitled to a new phone from apple! Anyway.....if anyone out there can help me in anyway, or can suggest anything that I can try to fix this problem, please, please let me know.
    Many thanks in advance.

My headphones work by the way.
Also, when I try to increase, or decrease the volume when playing music or trying to listen to something....even my videos, the buttons on the side do not adjust the volume or attempt to adjust it. I have gone into settings and sound and made sure my phone is not on mute and made sure the setting is checked so that the buttons on the side control the volume! I just don't know what to do!

  • I just got the new iPhone 4 today, and when I make calls, the screen doesn't lock, leading to accidental muting and speaker phone. Is there something wrong with my phone? Can I fix it?

I'm just concerned that there's something wrong with my new phone.

Do you have a case on it?
If so, remove and see if it helps.

  • Ear Speaker and Speaker Phone Broke

If I have a chance I'll be heading to the Apple Store tomorrow, can anybody give me an estimate of how much I'll be spending tomorrow to get these two parts replaced/repaired???

Have you tried standard troubleshooting steps such as resetting or restoring your phone? Apple doesn't do a-la-carte iPhone repairs. If your phone is out of warranty, they replace it with a refurbished phone for a standard fee:
    +"iPhone 3G Out-of-Warranty Service+
    +8GB, 16GB $199"+
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/service/faq/#warranty7
There are 3rd party iPhone repair businesses which do specific repairs, which might be less expensive. Google is your friend for this.

  • Phone Volume - Speaker Phone Volume

Hi, just got an iphone - I like the phone, but the earpiece volume and speaker phone volume makes carrying on a simple phone conversation difficult.
I have adjusted the volume on the side AND in the setting it is slide all of the way to the right....
Am I out of volume options?
Any help would be great - thanks!!!!

Boy, what can you say about difference of opinion?
Anyway, I must personally disagree a bit with both davistld01 and Nick Buraglio. I guess my problem with their testimony is that it's delivered like a tire iron, and I think the issue is slightly more complex...
First, I agree that I would like more headroom in the gain of both the earpiece and, much more so, the speakerphone. But the devil is in the details...
Having had both a Treo 650, and most recently a 700p (still have it), I found the speaker volume of Palm Treo's quite wanting. But Palm Treo owners have had the benefit of the extremely popular 3rd party app, "VolumeCare". This nips the problem in the bud... And there was a brief period when I upgraded to the 700p that VolumeCare hadn't been updated, and the reintroduction of standard volume was a rude awakening... iPhone I find similar, except the speaker sound is a bit more 'tinny'. But, unlike Treo whose speaker is on the device back, iPhone's is on the bottom. This helps, because you can hold it with your hand such that the sound is directed (by your hand) forward. It makes a big diff, and is not awkward IMO, but natural. This may be exhibited by the commentary about using the speakerphone on a table, which essentially accomplishes the same thing.
And on the earpiece, I find it pretty similar to most mobile phones. That is, the effective volume depends greatly (maybe a bit more than most) on how you align it with your ear canal. If off by just a bit, gain drops off significantly. And if I'm in a noisy restaurant, say, I can press a bit against my ear and get ample sound volume.
So, two final observations... First, again I would like to see more headroom in gain. Second, it seems that the available iPod speaker volume is very good IMO. So it appears that there's ample gain available. It just seems that it's too limited. This makes me think that the deficit can be corrected with an operating firmware update.

  • My volume solution... Both handest and speaker...

I must say that I was not upset about the volume issue, though the speaker volume for speaker phone is pretty low. Well I have two solutions that work for me.
First, for the handset volume, I paired my bluetooth earpeice and can barely keep the volume at 50-60% without killing my ears. One problem solved.
Second, I drive a 07 4 door jeep wrangler and it has an auxillary input in the radio. I had been using it for my ipod. Well today while driving, my wife called me. I had the iPhone plugged in listening to some good 70s rock. The music faded as I hit answer call. Well I didn't think about the plug into the jeep stereo, and assumed the call would be answered on my earpeice. To my surprise, my wife's lovely voice was rocking the Jeep, and she could hear me clear as a bell. So now I have a great speaker phone.
    Volume issues solved.
Also of note: Shure is coming out with an adapter in August to plug in your earphones that will add the phone functionality that the Apple earpeices have. Enjoy.

Clean iPhone charging port with clean dry toothbrush. See if better. If still problem, and if there is Warranty or AppleCare, make Genius reservation or set up service and take or send to Apple for resolution. If no coverage, clean again with toothbrush and small amount of Isopropyl Alcohol.

  • IPhone does not receive audio input while recording videos & Speaker Phone

Its like my Microphone doesn't work with Videos and Speaker phone...its getting really annoying it works fine in Voice Memos and Voice calls (Without SP)
    Videos sound nothing but statis
Anyone know how to fix this?

Make sure the mic isn't ubstructed when taking videos. I know thats seems like duh thing but your mic is on the bottom left of the device with the screen facing you. A lot of times  people don't relize they are doing it.

  • Speaker Phone Issues!!!

Has anyone else  had problems switching between normal talk mode and speaker phone mode with thier iphone?
When I switch to speaker phone, say to look something up on my phone while still communcating with the person on the other side we can communicate just fine, then when I want to switch back to normal talk mode they can no longer hear me. I can still hear them them even if I try switching back to speaker phone, the other person can be heard loud and clear, but they will no longer be able to hear me no matter what I do.
I'm not sure if it is a phone issue or iOS issue. I had problems with my iPhone 4 and now again with my iPhone 4S. I am hopeing other people have had this problem and can give me a few hints as to solving it. Even if that means taking it in for an exchange, I dont really care, I would just like it to work. I set up an appointment for support but have yet to talk with anyone. I hope someone can help.
    Thank you.

Hi kat2653. Let's get your husband's phone working properly! When your husband is holding the phone up to his ear, is the screen not going blank? There's a great proximity sensor on the iPhone that should take care of the phone's screen sensitivity while on a call, because it makes the screen untouchable while it's blank. If that's not working, there may be something partially blocking it, like a case or screen protector.
There's also been some wonderful enhancements to all the iPhones with the new iOS 6 updates. Please use the steps from Apple at  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414 to make sure you're iPhone has been updated to Version 6.0.1 (10A523). You can also double check if this is the version you already have by going to Settings>General>About on the iPhone.

I just bought 2 iPhone 5 s. I can barely hear the person on the other end unless I turn on the speaker phone..then every one can hear. I cant find a way to turn up hearing volume. Tried blue tooth on/ and bluetooth off. Phone ring is set high. Both phones are having the same problem, so must be missing something?

My iPhone only has "headphone" volume, no "speaker" volume. How do I fix this so I can hear phone calls?

The phone may be stuck in headset mode. Rapidly plug and unplug a headset 10x to free up the switch inside the jack.

  • Iphone 4 the mike does not work when making a call.  it does work with speaker phone and face time

Just activated new Iphone 4 and the mike does not work when making a call.  it does work with speaker phone and face time. Any known fixes?

My wife's iphone 4 also has your same no ring problem as does my iphone 5 just less often.  I called her iphone 4 at home from where I work 20 miles away on my iphone 5.  With her phone in 3G mode ONE call went through and 9 went to voice mail in 10 tries.  This is a 10% sucess rate!!  I also could listen in real time from the wired work phone and the wired home phone.  She turned off 3G mode and it went to "O" mode at  the top left of the screen after the ATT.  In this mode it rang on the first ring tone 5 times out of 5 tries which is 100% of the time.  I have learned that the calling party will hear up to 4 ring tones when placing a call on the ATT network.  If the ring tone changes volume slightly before the 4th ring then and only then will the cell phone start to ring.  If the ring tone does not change after the 4th ring you get voice mail.  If the calling party does not leave a voice message there is never a missed call displayed on the iphone.  If the calling party does leave a voice message a few minutes later the iphone dings for arriving voice mail but still no missed call indication.
This appears to be related to the time of day and the ATT tower that the receiving caller is using.  Tried other towers and it works in 3G mode 10 times out of 10 tries.  Apple replaced the first iphone 4 with a new phone, no improvement.  ATT replaced the SIM card and no improvement.  ATT so far is clue less.  This has been going on every since we got the new iphones which is 4 months.  The ATT web site also describes this same problem from several years ago.  Has anyone got better information?
    Thanks
