Volume/brightness control doesnt work

hey everyone, im new to this, as well as new to macs. i just got a brand new macbook pro last week and everything was working fine. then the other day i was reformatting my ipod and putting songs on it, as well as ripping my dvds, and the volume button stopped working. actually, most of the top row of buttons stopped working, except for the f11/f12 buttons. i was wondering if anyone else has had this problem or if anyone knows how to fix it? i have the feeling its just my rookie status to macs, but i hope someone can help me. thanks a bunch.

Repairing Permissions and/or Resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU) is known to resolve certain anomalies or conditions, and may help with your symptom. Neither process will compromise or harm anything with your Mac so it’s worth a shot.
Repair Permissions:
Go to: Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
Select: your Hard Drive
Select: the First Aid tab
Select: Repair Permissions
Resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU)
If the computer is on, turn it off.
Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
Press the Power button to restart the computer.

  • Brightness Control not working after Windows 8 install...

    Hi All,
I have a late year 2010 MBA core2duo with 4GB of ram, and I was running Windows 7 for a long time and recently bought a Windows 8 upgrade key. I heard the boot camp drivers were updated so I decided to load it up. I installed the new boot camp drivers on the Windows 7 side before the upgrade (had to use the command line to do the driver upgrade).
Windows 8 is all installed and the only issue I have is the brightness control doesnt work at all. I disabled the adaptive brightness as a lot of threads have been saying. Anybody have any ideas what I need to do to fix this?? It seems to be stuck on BRIGHT.

I have been having the issue of no brighness control when running windows through bootcamp for about 6 months now and have not found any applicable solution online.
While messing around trying to figure it out yet again I noticed that my monitor driver was signed by team viewer...
Sure enough clicking the roll driver back button resolved the issue by rolling the driver back to the Microsoft driver...
    So long story short:
Right click "My Computer" click properties
Click device manager (lop left of window)
    Expand Monitors section
    Double Click monitor
    Click driver tab
If the driver here is not signed by Microsot or Apple click the roll back button. My driver version is 6.1.7600.16385 (Driver date 6/21/2006)
Rolling this back instantly resolved my issue. I will now propagate this post to all the threads I saw regarding this issue.
    I am running windows 7 x64 Ulti on a 15" rMBP.

Lower volume button control not working help?

If you only restored from backup, restore to factory defaults/new iPod.  If you then still have the problem it is likely a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Satellite C850-B735 brightness control stop working

    Hi,
I am having problem with brightness control.
When I restart or start my laptop, brightness control works fine (fn+f2 to decrease, fn+f3 to increase)
When I sleep laptop and resume laptop, the brightness control stop working and brightness of lcd remains to high bright.
i-e- when pressing fn+f2 or fn+f3, brightness is not decreasing or increasing.
It was working before two days. I didn't install or update any display driver and driver from toshiba download site is installed from the day first. display-20130111074851.zip

    Hi Chand
This is user-to-user forum and we can try to help you with useful tips.
You cannot expect that someone collect and send you drivers. How to send you, for instance, display driver with 100 MB capacity.
You must download it alone. I presume you have machine designed for Middle East so visit please Toshiba support page on http://www.toshibamea.com/ choose your destination and check for support. As far as I know Toshiba offers drivers for supported operating systems.
Instructions about Win8.1 upgrade you can read on http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows8_1-message/
By the way: have you upgraded Win8 that you got to Win8.1? Im not 100% sure but I presume you got machine with Win8 64bit version, right?
Have you created recovery media before you have installed Win8.1 version? If not please do this. Recovery media creation is very important.

  • Tecra P5 - Volume control doesnt work properly

    Hi
Since upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit I can't turn the volume all the way down by using the volume control at the front of the notebook. Worked fine under Vista 32 bit.
The volume control still works but no matter how far I wind it to the left there is still sound coming from the speakers.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks
    Warren

As far as I know volume control in the past was mechanical but now it works on different way and it is controlled by specific tool/utility.
To be honest Tecra P5 is not known to me but obviously it is Australian notebook model and according to Australian support page this notebook model is not supported for Windows 7.
That doesnt mean you cannot use it but this means there is not software package designed for Windows 7 that can be installed so I think there is no much you can do about it.
I know it is annoying but for volume control you can use Windows option placed in task bar.

  • Brightness control not working in Windows 8 x64 after sleep with Boot Camp 5.0.2

    Hi,
I am using Boot Camp 5.0.2 with Windows 8 x64.
Wheen the computer has been in sleep mode, and wakes up again, the brightness control won't work as expected.
Usually the screen is to dark (darker than before, what it should be), and after some time pops up brighter as it should be.
Has onyone else seen this issue?
I mean, it seems that for brightness we use the internal control GUI of Windows 8, and not the Apple one that is used in Windows 7 and in Windows 8 for the sound control.

  • Macbook Pro Brightness Controls Not Working

Ok, this is really weird. I have a Macbook Pro and after installing the new aluminum keyboard with the Keyboard 1.2 update my brightness controls in OSX no longer work. The weird part is if I go into Windows via Boot Camp my brightness controls (F1,F2) work fine. In Display Properties in OSX there is no brightness slider.
    Can anyone help? Thank you.

"I just tried this. Go into System Preferences -> Display. Turn off Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes. Now move the Brightness slider right and left, left and right. Turn on Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes. When I changed it from far left to right then left again it was ok."
Hey, thanks for the tip Neil. I was trying to figure out why my computer would dim and then get brighter. It would keep changing after every little thing i'd do. Honestly, it was freakin annoying.

  • HP Pavilion 17" AMDA10 F2 F3 brightness control not working after win10 install

After installing windows 10 my brightness controls F2,F3 stopped working. I found this out because after the install my laptops display was super bright and i tried to tone it down using the function keys.I did download the AMD catalyst control and can turn it down there, but my function keys for it are not working, is there a planned update to fix this issue? Thanks

Hi there ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. Have you tried in the Device Manager to update the driver that is currently installed? In the device manager try selecting find new hardware.  At this time, I have a document to assist with Using the Function Keys. You can uninstall your keyboard driver, restart your Notebook, then reinstall the drivers. The HP Support Assistant can help you. Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that need updating for Windows 10. Here is troubleshooting when drivers are not available yet. Updated Windows 10 drivers will become available on the HP Drivers and Downloads Page for your product. They will be released as they become available to HP. Have a great day!

  • HP Omen Control doesnt work

Hi Guys, Just received my new HP Omen. I am very impressed with the quality and the speed! I have one problem though. The software tool that is supposed to give me the ability to change the function keys mapping and the color of led lighting doesnt work as it should. Well... the software itself works fine. I can add mappings change colours and make profiles. But not of those things actually changes something. So no changing buttons. No changing colours. Nothing. Can someone help me?

The problem here are either caused SW or HW, below can help to clarify SW portion.  There are three componets that enable HP OMEN Control feature - BIOS, HP System Event Utilty and HP OMEN Control. Below links will take you to the latest version:1. BIOS (F.23) - http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71001-71500/sp71090.exe2. HP System Event Utility - http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71001-71500/sp71156.exe3. HP OMEN Control - http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp70501-71000/sp70894.exe(Please update them in this sequence, reboot system after each install) If you still encounter problem with HP OMEN Control - i.e. P1-P6 key not working, keyboard LED color doesn't change..etc after updating the system to the latest version of software, it's likely that system hardware might require some check-up.

  • Brightness control not working after sleep

Sometimes, after I close the lid for some time and then open the lid again (putting the computer to sleep?) the screen is very dim and the brightness controls don't work. Solution seems to be rebooting the computer. Apparently this problem has been around for a long time:
    2009 https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1147601?start=0&tstart=0
    2007 https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1119174?start=0&tstart=0
I'm on a (nearly) brand new five-thousand dollar MacBook Pro with the latest OS (Lion?) with all the software and firmware updates, and the laptop has been rebuilt twice by the genius bar at the Apple store due to a faulty solid state disk drive and a subsequent disk corruption issue. And, let me just throw in for any Apple engineers who might be listening, that if I close the lid (sleep?) when my laptop is fully charged, it will be dead, or nearly dead by the next day. I've got an $800 two year old Asus that I closed the lid on and came back to weeks later and it still had nearly a full charge (I opened it up and went right on working for a couple of hours). Very disappointing for a $5,000 computer! But I digress...
I'm sure the battery situation is hopeless, but is there any hope for a resolution to the brightness control?
And let me just say that I very much appreciate all the hard work and helpfullness of the good folks at the Apple store and on this forum. It's not your fault this $5,000 machine has such aggrivating shortcomings. It's like buying a Ferarri (yes, I admit...it's a Ferarri) with a door that won't open and windshield wipers that don't work. And you know what's worse is those TV commercials where the Mac's are smugly portrayed as such superior machines...OK, sorry...I'll stop.
Off to reboot so I can see the screen...any help would be appreciated.

  • Software Brightness Controls Not Working (Dell D630)

I've just encountered a problem with my software brightness controls on a fresh install of Archlinux (using KDE as the desktop environment).  I can adjust my display's brightness to my heart's content using the brightness keys on my keyboard, but none of the stuff in KDE power management works.  In addition, I've also tried the xbacklight program without success.  It doesn't give me any errors, it just fails to adjust the backlight at all.  Any ideas why this is happening and what I might be able to do to fix it?
    Thanks!

There are quite a few threads about backlight issues with the 3.13.x. kernels.

  • Volume & Brightness Controls do not work on Keyboard

I have a five and a half year old Mac (purchased January 2009) running OS X 10.5.8.  My keyboard recently became faulty, so I went to the Apple store and bought the exact same thing as a replacement.  The keys all appeared to work fine and I was very happy.  However, today I tried to play a song from my iTunes library and noticed the volume up and down keys did not work!  I then tried all of the keys across the top and discovered that the brightness keys that are identifiable do not work... that in fact the brightness up is the F15 key (when it should be the F2 key) and the brightness down is the F14 key (when it should be the F1 key).
I have read through the forums on these boards and tried all the suggested solutions.  I have:
    1) Tried checking and unchecking the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys."  Restarted the computer.  No change.  Keys still don't work.
    2) Reset the PRAM.  Did it three times.  No change.  Keys still don't work.
    3) Rebooted in Safe Mode to delete system caches.  Restarted from the Apple menu.  No change.  Keys still don't work.
    4) Someone suggested going to the Apple downloads page, but they didn't follow that suggestion up with anything else.  I see updates for keyboard software, however they are all for wireless keyboards.  My keyboard is wired, and it has the number pad on the right.
    5) Run the command "sudo killall coreaudiod" in Terminal.  No change.  Keys still don't work.
    6) Deleted the com.apple.soundpref.plist file in the Preferences folder in the User Library folder.  No change.  Keys still don't work.
    7) Checked the Audio Midi Setup in Applications to ensure that the settings for output are set to 2ch- 24 bit and 44100.0 Hz for format.  Which they are.
I will say that something did work!  I downloaded and successfully set the function keys for volume and brightness using Spark (thanks to user turtlenecknz!).  I will use this method as I think it is the only thing that will fix my problem (for now, at least).  I'm just curious if there is a way to avoid using a software program as I'm not sure if it will need to be re-opened on system restart... for me, it boils down to reliability.
After reading this thread - Re: Mac Aluminum keyboard VOLUME KEYS not remapping - I've determined that the original keyboard I had for this computer was the MB110LL/A model.  The Apple store gave me the MB110LL/B model.  That is why I'm having this issue.  Does Apple even carry the A Model any more?  I found the A Model on Amazon, but it's $81 + $6 shipping- yikes!  Does anyone know another site that sells it for less?
Any other troubleshooting suggestions are greatly appreciated!  And, if anyone knows whether Apple carries the A Model any more (or know someplace I can get one cheaper than $87!), that is appreciated as well!  Thank you to anyone that read this rather lengthy message, and then takes the time to respond.

    Hello,
Simplest would be to add Spark to your Login items to have it start each time, or in the Dock, right click & choose Open at Login.
eBay might be an option, the black ones are esentially the same as the white ones...

  • Volume control doesnt work through headphones.....

    hello
i have a iphone 3gs, and i am using the headphones i got with the phone,
the problem im having is, the volume control on the headphones dont work, the middle button works, like i can change songs and pause, but for some reason i cant up or down the volume through the headphones, i have done it before through the headphones but now they dont work,
is there something i need to do? like any settings or is it a fault in the headphones!!
    please help meeeeeee!!!

Plug the headphones in and out a few times while a song or something is playing. This has worked a few times for me. If this doesn't work then turn the iPhone off and back on. This will more than most likely fix your problem.
Make sure you are on the most current firmware. If this doesn't fix it then you could back up your data and then do a restore. Still nothing ... make an appointment with Apple to look at it. Good Luck!
