Volume & Brightness Controls do not work on Keyboard

I have a five and a half year old Mac (purchased January 2009) running OS X 10.5.8.  My keyboard recently became faulty, so I went to the Apple store and bought the exact same thing as a replacement.  The keys all appeared to work fine and I was very happy.  However, today I tried to play a song from my iTunes library and noticed the volume up and down keys did not work!  I then tried all of the keys across the top and discovered that the brightness keys that are identifiable do not work... that in fact the brightness up is the F15 key (when it should be the F2 key) and the brightness down is the F14 key (when it should be the F1 key).
I have read through the forums on these boards and tried all the suggested solutions.  I have:
1) Tried checking and unchecking the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys."  Restarted the computer.  No change.  Keys still don't work.
2) Reset the PRAM.  Did it three times.  No change.  Keys still don't work.
3) Rebooted in Safe Mode to delete system caches.  Restarted from the Apple menu.  No change.  Keys still don't work.
4) Someone suggested going to the Apple downloads page, but they didn't follow that suggestion up with anything else.  I see updates for keyboard software, however they are all for wireless keyboards.  My keyboard is wired, and it has the number pad on the right.
5) Run the command "sudo killall coreaudiod" in Terminal.  No change.  Keys still don't work.
6) Deleted the com.apple.soundpref.plist file in the Preferences folder in the User Library folder.  No change.  Keys still don't work.
7) Checked the Audio Midi Setup in Applications to ensure that the settings for output are set to 2ch- 24 bit and 44100.0 Hz for format.  Which they are.
I will say that something did work!  I downloaded and successfully set the function keys for volume and brightness using Spark (thanks to user turtlenecknz!).  I will use this method as I think it is the only thing that will fix my problem (for now, at least).  I'm just curious if there is a way to avoid using a software program as I'm not sure if it will need to be re-opened on system restart... for me, it boils down to reliability.
After reading this thread - Re: Mac Aluminum keyboard VOLUME KEYS not remapping - I've determined that the original keyboard I had for this computer was the MB110LL/A model.  The Apple store gave me the MB110LL/B model.  That is why I'm having this issue.  Does Apple even carry the A Model any more?  I found the A Model on Amazon, but it's $81 + $6 shipping- yikes!  Does anyone know another site that sells it for less?
Any other troubleshooting suggestions are greatly appreciated!  And, if anyone knows whether Apple carries the A Model any more (or know someplace I can get one cheaper than $87!), that is appreciated as well!  Thank you to anyone that read this rather lengthy message, and then takes the time to respond.

Hello,
Simplest would be to add Spark to your Login items to have it start each time, or in the Dock, right click & choose Open at Login.
eBay might be an option, the black ones are esentially the same as the white ones...

Brightness control does not work with the bluetooth keyboard connected on my iPad2. Please someone could help me ?

    Julien-
I have the Apple MC184LL/A Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard.  The brigtness control works with mine, as do most of the other functions.
Try cycling the keyboard off and on.  Hold the power button until the green LED goes out.  Then press it one more time to turn it back on.
You might try resetting the iPad's network.  Go to Settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings.  Then you may need to reconnect your WiFi and Bluetooth.
If that doesn't help, try resetting/rebooting the iPad.  Hold both the Home and Sleep buttons for several seconds until the Apple logo appears.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" arrow.  The iPad will restart in a couple of minutes.  Resetting this way will not hurt anything, and sometimes clears up mysterious problems.

  • Keyboard: audio and Brightness control keys not working with or without fn

The Keys for controling Audio and Brightness (F1-F5) do not work.
Also combined with pressing the "fn" key the keys do not work.
So i only control audio with the remote control or the slider in the menubar.
Making a reboot with deleting pram didn't help.
I'm running the up to date version of leopard on a macbook pro (core2duo).
I also searched in the forum for this problem.
I oten read about "sytem control"-"keyboard and mouse"-"keyboard" and the F1, F2, etc. to use as...
but switching this button on or off doesn't change anything.

    problem solved:
the couse was the software update 1.1 for macbook pro, because there i had the problem like in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6142512&#6142512
and did the solution like that, but there i maybe made some mistakes with renaming and copying, so i rinstalled the update and renamed it a copied to plugins, and now all works as it should.
    thanks for help

    Hello,
The backlight detection depends from acpi options selection on your kernel. Which kernel version do you use ?
    $ uname -a
(Use at least a 2.6.36 kernel since a lot of improvement for recent Toshiba laptop have been done during summer 2010)
This done, ACPI options beeing compiled into kernel or loaded as module, this line should appear in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log :
    "found backlight control interface /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0"
Having a C650-15Z, my brightness control works well.
    regards,
    alex

  • Brightness control keys not working in windows 10

Check videocard driver in Device manager, probably it installed wrong

  • Brightness control keys not working (f2+f3)

After upgrading to windows 10, my Brightness control keys(f2+f3) have stopped working. What shall i do?

I recommend that you download and install the latest version of the HP Support Assistant and run the Tune up application.http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp68001-68500/sp68201.exe  It may find drivers that resolve the issue for you. Drivers and firmware that worked under Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 should also work for Windows 10. That is a nice and new feature of Windows 10. Install the Synaptics Touchpad driver software for Windows 8.1. It should work under Windows 10. Install in compatibility mode if needed.http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp63001-63500/sp63417.exe Verify that the installed BIOS is  the current version F.19

  • T61 brightness controls don't work on keyboard

I'm having a small issue when suddenly the brightness controls (Fn + Home/End) don't work.  The other hotkey's work, like the on screen magnifier, sleep, hibernate, etc.  but the brightness for some reason suddenly doesn't work.  If it helps, i'm running a dual boot XP pro/Vista Ultimatex64.  Any Ideas?

You mean the control/microphone on your Apple headphones? The most likely cause is that you have fluff or something similar in the socket. See this thread for suggestion on how to clean it out using a paperclip or canned air (less good) discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10589736
    Hope this helps!

  • [Solved] Brightness control does not work in xfce4 moreover.

    Hi everyone.
I installed Arch on my HP EliteBook 8460p laptop and have a good time with it.
However after a hang of xfce (the mouse was still working but the screen hang), I cannot control my brightness by Fn+F10 anymore.
The brightness progress bar pop up but it doesn't change when I press buttons so now I have to work around with commandline but it's so unconvenient.
Any advice? I looked for errors in many xfce config files, change brightness value (I restored it after that) but nothing seem to work. Thanks for your replys.

Have you tried some kernel parameters?
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ba … ne_options
I have lost function-key backlight control after a kernel upgrade and had to add one to regain it.
Alternatively just use a keybinding for whatever command you are using (xbacklight?).

  • Keyboard volume control does not work

I have an iMac G5, running OS 10.5.8, and a new Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad. My keyboard volume control does not work. Any have ideas as to why ? (I have a similar set-up at work with no volume problems.)

Try system prefs/keyboard/keyboard/ and uncheck Use all F1, F2 etc as standard function keys.
Other wise the volume and brightness controls will only work if you hold down the function key first (fn)

  • My Bose SIE2i volume control does not work. (pause/play does work). This is the secone set - the apple store in Sydney replaced the firsat set that had the same problem. It was working OK and has stopped.

My Bose SIE2i volume control does not work. (pause/play does work). This is the second set - the apple store in Sydney replaced the first set that had the same problem. It was working OK and has stopped.

Thanks again V.K. I did check the layout, and it was listed as alphabet when I inputted the password. So that doesn't seems to the the issue.
Just finished a truly mystifying experiment, but I put in a shorter password in the way mentioned earlier and it worked. I then systematically kept increasing the characters of that password and it seems that if the password starts to exceed about 16, it stops recognizing it. I am fairly sure it is not the password itself since it never gives an error when typing in the verification password. So unless I systematically make the exact mistake twice at the setup screen, and then don't or make a different mistake every time at the login screen, I don't think its my typing skill.
So problem solved for now, but I am still a bit worried. Maybe I should completely reinstall and use a shorter password.
Is there supposed to be a length limit?

  • Brightness control keys stop working after booting MacOSX

I bought a new iMac 27" a couple of weeks ago, and I installed Windows 7 using bootcamp.
All the control keys (brightness, volume, etc) works ok on Windows until I reboot it in MacOSX. When i start windows again, brightness controls keys stops working, leaving the screen with the maximus bright, which is killing my eyes.
Reparing boot camp drivers doesn't do the trick. Am I missing something?

Try fn + the controls. It might be that Windows defaulted to those buttons as F1, F2, etc. Using fn while pressing the buttons will 'tell' Windows that it has to listen to the Bootcamp software and lower the brightness.
