Volume button says "headphones"

On 1/28/15 I updated my software on my iPhone 6 plus. This evening I noticed that when I would press the volume button and it says "headphone". I checked the sound settings an nothing seemed usual. I couldn't hear the clicks when texting or incoming text alerts. My friend called me and I could hear the ringtone but when using the phone I couldn't hear anything until I put the speaker phone on. While talking for a bit it started to work again and for a few mins thereafter. Then without even touching the phone it ceased to work again. After 10 mins it started functioning normally.
I know its not a hardware issues because this is the first issue I've had and, again, it didn't start until after last nights software update. Am I the only one?

Just updated to 8.1.3 on my Iphone 6 Plus and now all my sound is being pushed through the headphone jack as well. Plugging and unplugging in headphones doesn't fix the problem. I can't hear anything come out of my phone unless there are headphones plugged in. Checked all the settings and everything is as it should be. What's going on?

  • I can only hear my phone when it is on speaker.  The volume button says "headphone"  I couldn't find anything on settings.  Help!!

Has this ever happened to anyone?  I checked in settings, but couldn't find a way to readjust this.  Thx.

Try cleaning out your headphone jack with compressed air and/or a tissue/cotton swab.
Try plugging your headphones in/out about 20 times.

  • Volume button says sound effects, no sound.

    Hello Skeetercove,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Please follow the steps below to troubleshoot the issue of having no audio output from your iPad's speakers.  Please note that even though the steps state it's for iPhone, the same applies to your iPad.
Verify that the volume is set to a level you would normally be able to hear.
Ensure that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack or the dock connector.
If the iPhone is in a protective case, make sure that the speaker port isn't blocked by the case.
Make sure that the speaker and dock port aren't clogged with debris. If necessary, clean it with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush. Carefully and gently brush away any debris.
If an audio issue occurs when using a specific application, try testing other applications to see if the issue persists.
If the iPhone is paired with a Bluetooth headset or car kit:
    Try turning off Bluetooth.
If you experience difficulties with the Bluetooth feature, follow these troubleshooting steps.
    Restart the iPhone.
If restarting doesn't fix the issue, ensure that your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS.
If the issue is not resolved, please contact Apple Support.

  • My volume button says im changing my volume but i dont have any volume still for my macbook pro

idk why but anything to do with volume is not working and was wondering if anyone new how to fix it?

    No sound from internal speakers?
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
Make sure Mute is not enabled.
    2. If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    3. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405

  • No sound through external speakers on my iphone 4s but headphones work fine! When headphones unplugged volume button shows headphones not plugged in! Tried all solutions suggested here to no luck?!??

No sound through external speakers but fine through headphones! Button on left is not on mute and checked all settings and all fine! Tried all solutions here but no luck! Sound gone before I updated the software??

You may have debris in your headphone jack blocking the sensor.  Try blowing hard on the jack, and inserting/removing your headphones quickly multiple times to clear it.

  • My volume isn't working it keeps saying headphones if I try to turn it up or down although my headphones aren't plugged in and nothing it stuck in the hole e.g fluff help please x

My phone has no volume and says headphones if I try to turn the volume up or down. My headphones aren't plugged In and there is nothing caught in the hole e.g fluff. Please help x

If you use headphones, do you get sound? Try inserting & removing your headphones a couple times to see if sound from the speaker comes back.
If not, it could be a hardware issue with the headphone jack and you need to bring the phone in to be checked out.

  • TS3274 After updating to the latest version of itunes I now have no audio .  The volume button is all the way up and it says "headphones".  I never saw that before and can't find where to change it.

I updated to itunes 7.02 yesterday and now I have no audio.  The side switch says mute or headphones.  How do I listen to anything without headphones?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

  • Why does it say headphones when i use the volume buttons

why does it say headphones when i use the volume buttons instead of volume when the headphones are not plucked in?

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

  • My iPhone 4 is only 14 months old over dropped very well looke after, one day the lock button stops then the volume buttons, now the headphone port does not work and the battery lasts about 4 hours after full charge I still have a year left on my contract

My phone is 2 months out of warranty, it's never been dropped or miss used yet the past week every day something has gone wrong with it. First the lock button stopped then the side volume buttons. Then the head phone port when I putt headphones in the phone turns the volume
Down automatically and it won't turn up until I take my headphones back out. The battery lasts 4 hours max after a full charge and today I took my phone off the docking charger and all my music has gone! The phone is breaking down more and more everyday what is going on! I know people who have had there iPhones years an non of this happen! I still have a year left on my contract too!

Who is your carrier and what is your coverage with them? If you are with say Verizon, and have Total Equipment Coverage or Extended Coverage, they will swap it out for you under Manufacturer Warrantee.

my iPad's volume buttons dont work unless i have my headphones plugged in. Also my volume in general doesnt work because it says its still connected to a dock, but i dont own a dock. why doesnt the volume work or the speaker.

finally i found solution ... it was finger print device and i dont know what is the relation between finger print and sound problem any way the solution is installing the latest fingerprint definition and i found sound working properly !!

  • The volume doesn't work and just says headphones?

We can't hear anything on the Ipad and when we push on the buttons to turn the volume up or down it just says 'headphones'

A place to start, try giving it a reset. Hold down the sleep and home buttons, past when you see the red power down slider and until you see the silver apple. Let it reboot and try again.
