Volume buttons no longer work in 10.4.8

I just updated to 10.4.8, via Software Update. I have tried pressing my volume keys on my Apple Keyboard that shipped with the iMac, and the little grey box comes up with the volume status, and it moves as I press the volume up/down, but the volume isn't adjusted. I can change the volume from the menu bar, and I can change the brightness with F14 and F15.
Buttons that work:
F14-F15 (Brightness)
Eject
Buttons that do not work:
Volume down
Voume up
Mute

Have you should made sure your permissions are repaired? If your permissions are wrong, then you will likely have trouble.
I found that it found several audio related permissions needing correction on my system after the update. Since repairing permissions, everything has been fine.
So, go into "Disk Utility" in the Applications --> Utilities folder and repair your permissions.
Start by selecting your hard drive on the left window of Disk Utility. Then, go down and click on the "Repair Permissions" button. Once it's completed, then exit Disk Utility.
Then, go ahead and restart the computer and see how it works.

After playing music next time I used the iPhone my volume buttons don't work. What have I done?

Told me to pick it up. When I gave it to them all components were working. Said because they weren't able to fix it there was no charge. Don't understand this.

Probably when you dropped, kicked, smashed, threw, or whatever you did to break your screen it also damaged the logic board and the connections to the volume button, headphone jack and sleep button. Happens all the time. Apparently the shop you selected to work on it is not very good so take them off your shopping list.
Then go buy a 5th Generation iPod Touch.

Curve 8520 Volume Button No Longer Working

Today the volume up button on right side of my Curve 8520 no longer works. Is there a fix? Is there another way I can control my volume when listening to music? I really don't want to replace my current Curve if I can. Please help

When listening to music, listening to voice notes or watching video's there is no sound. When I push on the up volume button, volume does not go up & little speaker icon on bottom right of screen shows no bars (ie: no sound)
When making a phone call and using speaker phone, noticed I am able to volume down with the volume down button, but cannot volume up.
It does seem like a hardware issue (up volume button is done), I am wondering if there is another way I can control my volume through menu settings.

I've never had any problems with my keyboard but after one instance of viewing a video (via my TV, where I selected audio device
as HDMI as for some reason it was still coming from my mac, which was not usual) my volume function keys on keyboard no longer
work.
When I press them they show they volume icon onscreen but it is grey and non-functional?
I've tried going to system pref and keyboard setting to ensure the function keys are all set as they should be but I have not had any
success so far. I've also played video through TV again and put audio settings back to mac, instead of HDMI, but still nothing.
Any ideas??

In the meantime, you could use Keyboard Viewer to type the characters which don't work.
You can open Keyboard Viewer via the Input Menu - that's the menu that usually displays a flag, on the right end of the main menubar. If the Input Menu is not shown in the main menubar, go to System Preferences > Language & Text > Input Sources and checkmark the "Show Input menu in menu bar" item. On the same page, at the top of the list of input sources (languages ≈ keyboard layouts) checkmark the item "Keyboard & Character Viewer".
With the Keyboard Viewer open, any letters you click on its representation of the keyboard will be entered in an open document.
Note - this can't, of course, be used as a substitute for characters needed for startup commands.

I pod nano 6th generation volume buttons no longer work

I got a quote from apple and they want 80$ to fix an ipod with a crappily built button. This is my second ipod nano 6th gen within the past year, my last one had the same button problem but it was with the power button. I don't abuse them.
How do i go about getting a new 6th gen without paying 80$ for a design flaw.

Sorry, I used the wrong term in my original post. I don't mean to say "mute" my phone, but meant lower the volume!
Should have read: "In Smart Actions, if I want to lower the notification volume on my phone to 13% when I'm in a meeting it only adjusts the volume for calls - not text or email notifications! What the heck is the point of adjusting your phone volume if it doesn't affect all the notifications!?"

Up volume key no longer working after 10.3.1

Since OS update on Passport to 10.3.1.1581 the up volume key no longer works in an app. I first noticed it while watchin a YouTube video in browser, then in Neutron music player then the Music app. The button works fine to advance songs (long press). At first I rebooted and it seemed to work, then it stopped.
Then I noticed that it works on the home screen just not in any apps. It's a pain to have to exit the music app, go to the home screen to increase volume.
Down volume and pause/assistant works fine. Up button works fine in Camera to take shot.
Have rebooted many times since upgrading.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try reloading the 10.3.1 update again just in case something in the update went wrong.
Also, are you updating through BlackBerry link or over wifi or cellular? I always reccomend updating through BlackBerry link just to prevent a corrupt update in case the signal drops. BlackBerry link will greatly reduce the chance of a corrupt update as long as the USB cable is not disconnected.

Function Buttons no longer work

Installed Leopard. (Had a painful time).
The Fn Buttons used to work with tiger:
Fn F4 -> volume, Fn F2 -> Brightness, etc...
These buttons no longer work.
How do I fix it ?
Do I need a driver or something ?

System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > keyboard.
Make sure the 'Use all F1 & F2 as Standard function keys' has been ticked or use the keys without the fn key.

Volume buttons won't work

i dropped my iphone in the shower. yeah, i know, stupid me. the sound still came out a little gurgled. i tapped it against my hand a couple times and it became clearer, figuring water was in the speaker area. i used a blow dryer to see if i could dry out the remainder, but that resulted in the phone going mute. now the volume buttons done't work at all. no volume bar comes across the screen at all. no sound comes from the phone except for when i make calls. i can hear phone calls but the phone itself no longer makes any sound and the volume buttons do nothing.

the fix was time. after a few hours, everything came back to normal.

My lock button no longer works on my ipod touch and now i have all kinds of problems with it freezing and kicking me out of apps. Is there any way to get this fixed and were would i go to get it fixed?

Please Help!!!! I have an ipod touch 4th gen. and since the last update the lock button no longer works, this has caused it to have a lot of problems now like freezing all the time, kicking me out of almost all my apps, some times even when if locks on its own its not locked and buttons with be pushed in my pocket, and this causes the battiery to die fast. Why are the back/forwards buttons no longer working after upgrade?

Hi, I recently upgraded from Firefox 3.5 (I believe) to Firefox 4.0.1 and now the back and forwards buttons no longer work. I tried resetting the settings under the toolbars > customize, etc. That didn't work. FYI, I'm using a mac. Any solutions? Thanks in advance...

The button's broken. S**t happens. Apple will replace your phone. If in waranty it will be free of charge. If not, you will pay $149.
You can elect to have it repaired at a 3rd party shop near you if you choose, but this will void all warranty if there's any left.
