Volume changes depending on what I have plugged in

So when I have headphones or speakers plugged in, I'll set one volume level that's comfortable for using either of those things. If I remove the plug though, then it'll revert to whatever volume I HAD before putting headphones in. Annoying little quirk, I know, but any way to prevent that? Anyone else notice this?
One thing I miss about my thinkpad: hardware volume control

And if you plug them back in then it will revert to the volume you were using before you unplugged them. OS X stores the volume settings separately for the internal speakers and the anything connected to the output jack.
I think it's a plus compared to windows, where if you unplug the headphones and forget to lower the volume before you shut down, the music when you log in again near blows the internal speakers.

Many people are asking the question if whether to upgrade to 10.5 or 10.6. It really depends on your situation and what you can afford. This tip will help in that decision making, with various steps to prevent failure:
    1. Regardless of which operating system you choose, making at least two backups that are separate from the computer is highly recommended.
    2. Users with PowerPC Macs can only go up to 10.5.8, if they have at least 867 Mhz (1 Ghz and greater meet that criteria). Dual 800 Mhz do not. Third party software known as LeopardAssist may offer an unsupported means of getting 10.5.
    3. 10.5 is no longer available for online order from Apple, but many online Apple stores have a phone number where you can special request it for an order.
Also many Mac used and refurbished shops may have it. Be sure the 10.5 disc you order is a black color with a pink nebula in the middle. Be sure it does not say Upgrade, DropIn, or OEM. If it has a Mac model number on it, it will not work with your Mac, if your Mac had worked with 10.4.11 or earlier.
    4. You can jump from 10.4 to 10.6 if your Apple hardware and software support it. This user tip explains which Apple hardware do:

    5. 10.5 does not give Boot Camp to those machines that don't support 10.6.
    6. 10.5 limits your access to Classic, as explained in this user tip:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2176255&tstart=10
    7. 10.5 has these hardware and software known to be compatible with it:

    Intel software, PowerPC software
    8. 10.6 has this hardware known to be compatible with:

and this software from links by

    9. Used and refurbished Macs can give you a transition until you can afford Snow Leopard, but remember, they have to come with their prebundled discs to ensure you don't miss out on whether or not they are ready for your upgrade needs.
Above all, if you don't see reference your inquiry here, be sure to ask in the appropriate forums on http://discussions.apple.com/ to determine which path gives you the least resistence.
    Good luck!

When you updates, how did you do it? Was it by downloading Firefox from getfirefox.com? Or using the internal updater to update Firefox?
    I'd suggest doing the following:
First make sure Windows is all up to date.
Then, click on Help, and check for updates inside Firefox. Install any updates it finds (It might be Firefox 3.6.28, or Firefox 12)
After installing that update, repeat the Firefox check for updates. After you install a version higher than Firefox 4, you will have to click on About Firefox to check for updates.
If at any time during the update process, Firefox asks to update your add-ons, allow it.
Finally, once you have all your updates installed, go to your Addons manager and check for any updates.

  • Volume change 'clicks'?

I've noticed that on few occasions after the 10.4.4 upgrade, my volume has behaved strangely, when changing it using the keyboard shortcuts -- the volume increases or decreases lags behind my keypresses, and my speakers emit a soft, percussive clicking noise as I make the changes.
At first I thought it had something to do with my processor load, but it seems to do it even during regular use. It seems to only happen when I'm running it off the battery -- on one occasion when I plugged it into AC power, the problem disappeared. It also seems to emit a single click every time I select Sound in my Preferences pane when I have the problem. Opening the Sound preferences also seems to temporarily relieve it of the laggy, clicking behavior. Again, this problem is intermittent, and the described Sound preference-click only happens when the volume change problem arises.
Anyone have any ideas? I don't really, besides that it might have something to do with 10.4.4 and battery power.

Mine clicks too, and has always done so. I think it's called positive feedback and is quite intentional. The volume of the clicks is in proportion to the volume setting, but other than when at a very low volume I wouldn't expect it to vanish even when plugged in. The laggy behaviour however, I'm sure that's intentional ! Are you running a heavy load of other programs? I don't use audio much so I'm probably not the right chap to try to figure out what's happening there. Do you have any other audio programs running that might have to be notified of a change in volume, thereby slowing things down?
    Best wishes, Max

Apple does not repair devices beyond replacing the screen on some models or a battery replacement.  They replace the ENTIRE device.
For the Out of Warranty replacement cost, you could have gotten a fully functional replacement device.  Instead you chose to spend less to get only the screen replaced and continue to live with additional issues.
Apple will not touch the device now.  They will know that it was opened elsewhere and that the replacement screen is not original.

  • Volume Drop Problem (changes depending on how held)

The speaker volume on my iPhone changes depending on how it's being held. I surely hope this isn't considered a "feature". Held at a diagonal angle tilted backward, the volume drops considerably. It seems to play normal only when fully flat, or vertical.
Anyone else have this problem also? I'm considering exchanging it for another.

Don't you think it might just be a little useful to know what normally happens? I mean, you do realize that some phones sound silent when you tilt them a mm, while other phones sound almost the same no matter where you hold them. You do get that the difference in volume for the iPhone speakerphone when placed on a solid surface is much more dramatic than the changes in volume most other phones have due to placement, thus it's not something everybody thinks of right away.
Nobody tried to tell you that the sound waves were effected by gravity and the phone would be louder if you held it over your head right?
Read the first post again and think about it; 'speaker' refers to any sound emitting device like the 'headset', 'earpiece', or 'speakerphone speaker'...which you might even call the 'speaker speaker' or just 'speaker', regardless of how you define the parts; other people toss around the terms as if they are interchangeable. The post just says speaker.
If you are so bright then why are you asking a question at all? You know that if you move your body and the phone at the same time the volume shouldn't change. I mean..sure gravity does make the soundwaves drop quicker and all that so when you walk up an angled driveway the phone needs to adjust the volume, but that's only a little bit...not 'considerably' right?
Let's think for a second (or less for some of us). First, 'I was concerned some engineer mightve mistakenly thought of this as some cockamami "feature"'. Know what? It's a good idea. I wouldn't half mind a phone that could adjust the volume when I moved it to or from my ear or body. Seamlessly changing from the EARPIECE to the SPEAKER would be a great thing too. Things like switching from the bluetooth HEADSET to the SPEAKER are nice touches. I think you have an advanced model or a special feature.
It's also a little difficult for people to know how much your phone changes in volume when they can't hear it. It's not like there's a recording or some empirical data like 'hey, when I tilt my phone at a 45 degree angle it drops 20 decibels'.
As to 'reflected acoustics?!?!', I think the post starts with "speaker volume" and continues to 'when fully flat, or vertical'. Fully flat sounds like your phone is sitting on a table, shelf, or the floor and since I don't put my phone on a block then lay down on the floor with my ear above it to make a call I think the description sounds more like the speakerphone portion than the ear 'speaker'. Stating what the SPEAKER should do when normally performing in answer to a question should be considered informative and useful because : If you knew what the speaker was supposed to do you would not have asked.
Yeah, you never know who is using an iPhone or posting in the forums, but it doesn't take very long to read through the posts and find the information you want when you post a clear question in the first place.
I don't consider my phone a derogatory TLA, but if that's what you think of the product then I hope you enjoy your old phone.
Don't let the bass fall on your foot on the way out.

  • Volume changes when headphone are plugged, but not when they are unplugged.

    Hi!
Recently I been having an issue with my Macbook Pro 13.
When I connect my headphones to the MBP, the volume changes (as it should be), but when I take them out it doesn't return to normal, it just stays where it was when the headphones were connected.
Now, if i mute my internal speakers and connect the headphones the volume changes, but when i take them off, the volume returns to mute. So the problem is when both (internal speakers and headphones) are set to different volumes.
Here's a video that shows what happens in sound control panel (it's in spanish, "Auriculares"= Headphones and "Altavoces Internos"= Internal Speakers)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdNttRFnxE8&
Does anyone else have this issue?
    Thanks for your answers!
    Andrés

Try a hard reset of the Nano. To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
I assume you have double checked to make sure you are plugging the headset all the way in meaning the white part of the headset is flush with the body of the Nano?

I am wondering what this thing is.
It is an icon located on the far right of the page next to the search toolbar. It is shaped like a circle with a number on the bottom right edge. The number changes depending on which tab I have opened. An empty tab has no number. This page results in a 1. I have another page open which results in a 4. The number shows white in a small orange box. The circle is outlined with a thick black line. What does this icon indicate?
    Thank you.

Hi John, I'm guessing that icon is created and updated by an extension. I'm not sure which one, though. Maybe something that is tracking the trackers, like Lightbeam? Have you tried hovering your mouse over the icon to see whether a tooltip appears, or clicking it?

I changed my ID, now i have problem to up date the apps I purchased with old ID. What shoul i do?

Depends on what you mean by "changed", if edited your account on appleid.apple.com to use a different email then just ignore that fact it shows the old email and use your current password.
If you created a new appleid then those old apps will always stay associated with the old id, in that case you can only update them with the old password or uninstall them and then redownload them and they will be linked to your current id

All apps are tied to the apple id that it was used to purchase or download the app.
did you use a different id to buy the app?
you can change id, settings - appstore - apple id - log out and log in with correct id.

    - Try on another computer

  • You have changed my product key and now microsoft is asking me for activation product key that doesn't match what you have changed. and it clearly stated that you changed my product key... please fix this!

I'v had my laptop for 9 years. I have been running Mozilla maybe for a year with updates. microsoft Automatic updates are set. Then, yesterday, for no reason at all, Microsoft asks me for my product key activation. Made some research and found out that my microsoft is genuine, however, it has not been activated!!! I found it really strange. When I wanted to put my product key registration, they say it is invalid. So, I made some research by going on the link they offered on the activation screen which brought me to be able to browse the internet. When I made research, I found out through the "test if your product is genuine", there is a product key that is different than what I have. They say I have product key xxxxx-xxxxx-T6DFB-Y934T-YD4YT. it clearly says it is 100 genuine but was not activated! After 9 years? I saw they wrote that my browser states mozilla. am not sure why this is happening. how can my product key change without my authorization? how can I not be able to enter my own computer anymore? why isn't my product activated? can you help me? can't contact microsoft without paying $49/hr or something like that... I don't have a credit card...

Mozilla has nothing to do with a Microsoft product activation key.
That "test" page should be viewed in Internet Explorer and not with Firefox, as it may use ActiveX which isn't compatible with any Mozilla product.
