Volume Directory too Fragmented

I ran Techtool 6 to try to identify the reason for my iMac slowing down (and now freezes and reboots), and when I ran Volume Optimization, it came back with the message that the volume directory was too fragmented.  Techtool suggested cloning the volume and copying it back to the startup volume.  Seems drastic, and I don't want to erase my backup drive to create a place to write the cloned volume.  Other solutions?

Techtool suggested cloning the volume and copying it back to the startup volume.
That's the way to do it right. Cloning back (file level) will lay down contiguous, unfragmented files. Also, see den.thed's suggestion.
You can do a clone to an external with Carbon Copy Cloner (paid) or SuperDuper (free for the first full clone, but paid after that for doing incremental clones.)
Depending on size and other factors, you might be able to save what you already have on the external backup and create a new partition for the clone.

    OS X 10.9.3

Contact Tech Tool tech support for assistance.
    The best tool for a fragmented director is Disk Warrior. With OS X there is no need to defragment (optimize) a hard drive unless it's very full with little space left on the drive - under 5 GBs of free space. If you must defragment your drive it's much better to do this instead;
    Defragmentation
There's little need for defragmenting the hard drive except when trying to install Boot Camp on a fragmented drive. But you don't need to buy third-party software. All you need is a spare external hard drive and Carbon Copy Cloner.
    Cheap and Easy Defragmentation
You will have to backup your OS X partition to an external drive, boot from the external drive, use Disk Utility to repartition and reformat your hard drive back to a single volume, then restore your backup to the internal hard drive. You will use Carbon Copy Cloner to create the backup and to restore it.
      1. Get an empty external hard drive and clone your internal drive to the
           external one.
      2. Boot from the external hard drive.
      3. Erase the internal hard drive.
      4. Restore the external clone to the internal hard drive.
Clone the internal drive to the external drive
      1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
      2. Select the Source volume from the left side dropdown menu.
      3. Select the Destination volume from the left side dropdown menu.
      4. Be sure the Block Copy button is not depressed or is ghosted.
      5. Click on the Clone button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive and click on the upward pointing arrow button.
    After startup do the following:
    Erase internal hard drive
      1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
      2. After DU loads select your internal hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the
drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is
failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be
reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the
           DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the
drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait
           until the process has completed.
Restore the clone to the internal hard drive
      1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
      2. Select the Source volume from the left side dropdown menu.
      3. Select the Destination volume from the left side dropdown menu.
      4. Be sure the Block Copy button is not selected or is ghosted.
      5. Click on the Clone button.
Destination means the internal hard drive. Source means the external startup drive.
Note that the Source and Destination drives are swapped for this last procedure.

I personally haven't experienced much of the "reverberation/feedback" when using a headset on the i4S...
Yes, I have near-perfect hearing too (for scope, squeaky brakes hurt my ears) I come from many conversations on many phones and types and first off, CDMA technology is great for coverage, terrible for voice quality. HD Voice in Europe made for some of the best phone conversations I've ever had.
Back on track, feedback is most noticable (similar to the landline phone) when using the iPhone without a headset, but for me it's not an absolute criticality mainly because I use VoIP apps alot, so maybe it has desensitized me some over the past year.
But whenever I'm on a call, and the other person has me on speakerphone, I have alot of trouble talking because of the feedback loop caused. So the less of my voice I hear the better I can talk.
Have you tried a bluetooth headset yet?

  • Recurring "Invalid volume directory count" error

    Hi everyone!
I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on this issue, because I'm just about to lose my mind trying to figure it out!
I manage a small companies' network of approximately 35 Apple Macintosh computers. All the computers are newer 2009 or later MacBook Pros and 2009 or later iMac running Mac OS 10.5.8 or 10.6.6.
A small number of computers persistently report one or more "Invalid Volume Directory Count" errors whenever I perform a Verify Disk check in Disk Utility roughly once per month. The errors are always easily corrected by booting the computers from their system CDs and then performing a Repair Disk and/or executing an fsck command in single user mode. Unfortunately, the problem recurs the very next time I check the affected computers' disks.
One particular user whose computer had always exhibited this problem recently received a new 2010 MacBook Pro 15, and now THIS computer exhibits the problem as well! Even more baffling, and just to be certain I avoided copying any damaged Library component from the old computer's drive, I didn't use the Apple Migration Assistant to migrate this user's hard drive to the new computer; rather, I performed a clean installation of all the applications and then copied his data to the new user account. Once again, Disk Utility reported the same error the very next time I performed a Verify Disk scan on the new computer's drive.
All staff use the same applications, and most of the other computers do not exhibit this problem.
I'm completely stumped by this problem! HELP

    Hi Thomas!
    Thanks for your advice!
I doubt that the drives are dying for the following reasons:
    1. The computers are fairly new
    2. I do check the SMART status every time I perform monthly diagnostics, and the affected units' drives always report back ok
As for backing them up, I will certainly attempt do so more frequently.
I have to believe that the problem must be caused by the way in which the affected users handle their computers; although when I ask them, they always assure me that they properly shut down and/or restart their computers.
As for the possibility that a program may be causing the issue, since everyone in this company uses the same software, I would expect this problem to affect considerably more systems than it presently does.
I will continue to troubleshoot this problem and (hopefully) discover its cause once and for all.
It's these sorts of problems that will one day do me in...career-wise, anyways.

  • When I send project to iTunes the volume is too low. I have auto normalize checked.

When I save project to itunes the volume is too low on the entire project.  I have auto normalize checked.  I have been sure to reduce the volumes below the red clipping dots.  This includes the master volume.  It is fine in GB, but in itunes I need to increase the volume slider to max to bring it up to what I was hearing in GB.  Is sthere something else I should do to reproduce more volume when I share a project to itunes?  Thank you.

DId you try a comparioson when exporting the same song with and without "Auto Normaize".
Technically there is the possibility that "Auto Normilize" will reduce the overall level of your final mix. If there is a short spike above 0dB that you don't hear as an audible pop and GarageBand brings down the overall level to that that spike to 0dBFS, and by doing so, lowering that level of your mix by that amount.
    Hope that helps

  • INVALID VOLUME FILE COUNT and INVALID VOLUME DIRECTORY COUNT

Every few days, something on my machine is causing an invalid volume file count and an invalid volume directory count. Error message will read something like:
    Invalid volume file count
(it should be 520176 instead of 520178)
    Invalid volume directory count
(it should be 152750 instead of 152748)
This causes the machine to lock up.
This is my SECOND machine (same set up on the previous machine) that is experiencing these issues. Once I run the disk utility off of the original OS disk everything is fine.

This is my SECOND machine (same set up on the previous machine) that is experiencing these issues. Once I run the disk utility off of the original OS disk everything is fine.
Invest in a couple things - backup drive, Disk Warrior, and SuperDuper
Install OS X to part of your external (small and just big enough for an emergency system and minimal programs).
Booting off DVD is fine, but no Finder and you are limited to the (older) version of Disk Utility on there (and it does get updated and changed).
Clone your system for boot backup, especially before updates and changes.
Disk Warrior recognizes and repairs more issues, some of which Apple First Aid doesn't even look for.
So even though it appears okay afterward...
Next would be to run Apple Hardware Test, and along with that check your RAM with MEMTEST (REMBER is handy and is just GUI wrapper to memtest program) or run Memtest yourself from the Terminal.

  • Invalid Volume Directory Count

I have had my MacBook Pro for nearly three years (Oct 07). I also have Apple Care but they have been unable to help and hence i am posting here.
About 18months ago 'parallels' sent out an update which caused 'parallels' not to load properly and set off a string of events that has been a marathon of faults and repairs. My Macbook has spent two separate periods of one week in an apple repair shop and ended up with a completely new hard drive under Apple Care. The last problem has not been fixed (the repair shops have said this is a software problem and nothing they can help me with) and i am at a loss what to do.
Problem: Every time i shut my laptop down, the hard drive becomes corrupted and randomly crashes programs and the whole system. When i do disk check, i am told that i have an 'invalid volume directory count' and it will list at least two separate count problems. I will repair this with my installation disk and the next time i shut down my laptop. The problem reappears. If i leave my laptop on, then i usually have no problems for at least a few days.
    Please help.

I've been having the same problem for the last 4 months or so. The problem even migrated to my MBP from my MP workstation. I've never had these kinds of file count errors and have had a rock solid Mac system for years, hardly ever a freeze. I can tell when the count goes off because my apps start acting weird, like slowing down, the spinning beach ball and failure to quit an app.
The DU app keeps it repaired for a few days, maybe a week at the most and then the error comes back. I've even rebuilt the directory using Drive Genius 3 only to have it go bad again a week later. Then, I followed advise and replaced the HD with a more expensive commercial grade server class drive, thinking it must be bad sectors, but the new drive shows the same error after a week and the replaced drive tested perfect with no bad sectors. I've considered it a 10.6.4 bug but then, more people would be having problems with it (there are a lot of us), so I decided to look elsewhere, since I have no desire to reinstall the main OS and 100G of applications and updates.
Since the problem migrated to my MBP when I used SuperDuper to clone my main apps over from the MP workstation, I figured there must be a 3rd party SW corrupting drives on both machines. Since there's no pattern to the errors from my main apps, I decided to look elsewhere, where apps could launched without my knowledge. This led me to the startup items in the OSX's main library folder. There I found apps that are tied to older virus scan software and drive utility software. I remember one fellow saying the "Drivepulse" auto scan feature in Drive Genius 3 was corrupting his drive in such a manner, so I turned it off, but not realizing this was executed from the StartupItems folder. I removed just about everything that was 3rd party; I don't want anything launching that is unnecessary. It's been a week and so far, so good. Given the nature of the cycle of past events, this is not sufficient time to say "gotcha" but I think it may be the cause from what I've read.
Go to the main library folder (not the user one) and look in the " StartupItems" folder and see what's there. I think you will be surprised how many apps put stuff there that you do not want running, especially from old software you may have already dumped but didn't know it left behind a few stragglers causing havoc while scanning your system. Get rid of everything you don't need. Those apps you use that do need this folder will rebuild there unix execution apps the next time you launch them.
I'll post an update after a month or so to let you know if my attempts have been successful.

  • "invalid volume directory count" troubleshooting help sought

Yep, I'm still on 10.5.8. I am about to go to Snow Leopard (since I know my machine can handle that) and was sorting thru files before the upgrade. I came across mds-crash-state file that prompted me to 'verify disk' (in DU) and then got the "invalid volume directory count" error message.
I think I realize that a repair disk from the install disk is perhaps a best option, but am wondering if I can do this, or even fix original issue, from the install disk on upgrade?
I do already have full backup and secondary backup of all files on this disk (main HD).
I feel another option to fix things, that seems like good time to consider this, is to move all my data on my main HD to new internal drive when I do the upgrade to 10.6.x.
Anyway, besides looking for input on my current options (a - fix this upon upgrade and/or b) move to new main HD during upgrade), I'm wondering if I need to consider doing the 'respair disk' option immediately. I'm no more than a week from upgrading, and other than slow acting computer at times, I haven't experienced any worrisome issues with this computer in recent days.

Do not attempt to "Upgrade in Place" without repairing the Hard Drive. The new install brings in over 250,000 new files. That will NOT make things better.
To ( Repair Disk) from the Installer/Utilities DVD:
Boot from the Installer/Utilities DVD, but do not Install. Answer only the "what language" question, if presented, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu or the Installer Menu.
At this point, your are using the DVD as your System, so the internal Hard drive is fully available for a deep repair.

  • Invalid volume directory count/unable to repair

My computer (iMac G5, OS 10.5.5) has been running slowly. When I run Disk Utility, I get an "invalid volume file count" and "invalid volume directory count" message, and an error message that the volume HD needs to be repaired. I can run Verify Disk Permissions, Repair Disk Permissions, and Verify Disk, but the Repair Disk button isn't available. Therefore, I followed instructions to start up from the install disk, then go to Disk Utility, all with the same outcome. In other words, I'm stuck, with Repair Disk never being available. What can I do? Many thanks for any helpful suggestions!

    Disk Warrior fixes this.

I just updated my iPod touch to iOS 6 and when I  Facetime the volume is too loud even if I turn it down. I tried to restore it several times but nothing changed...what can I do? Do I have to send it to Apple support?

I am having a similar problem - but it's not exactly the same.
I upgraded my iPhone 4S to iOS 6 when it first came out and everything seemed fine.
Last weekend, I noticed that I had soem issues with music copied to my phone which I couldn't seem to delete and after a lot of mucking about, decided the ebst best was to restore my phone to basics and re-load all of my music.
I noticed when I did the restore to rhe iPhone that it downloaded a new copye of iOS as part of the restore.
After the update, I managed to clean up my music but in phone calls, the audio on my phone - through the handset speaker is too loud and it makes the speaker vibrate.  If i try to use the volume buttons, i can see the volume slider move up or down but the audio volume doesn't actually change very much and even at low levels the audio qulity is poor.  the speaker vibrates.  Strange thing is that if i put the phone call on speaker phone, it's fine.
If I use the headphones, volume does change on calls when i use the volume controls on the headphone cable.  it even changes when i use the volume buttons on the handset with the headphones plugged in and in both cases the audio quality is fine.
With the headphones in music volume is low but does adjust up and down using wither the cable volume controls or the ones on the handset.
Audio on music through my car sound system seems fine and does increase or decrease as I adjust it in the car.
The only issue seems to be phone caslls through the handset speaker in normal mode......

  • Volume that doesn't exist shows up in the /Volumes directory

    I have the following problem:
I have very slow selection dialogs, in particular when I'm running Parallels (having to wait 2' for selecting a file). The interesting thing is that the problem disappears as soon as I connect to my NAS at home.
I looked into the volumes mounted and always see the volume /Volumes/admin in the /Volumes directory. This is a partition of my NAS but it always shows up even if I start up without any network connection.
I tried to unmount the volume using
    sudo diskutil umount force /Volumes/admin
    and
    sudo umount -f /Volumes/admin
but I get the following error messages:
    Unmount failed for /Volumes/admin
    and
umount: pthread_cond_timeout failed; continuing with unmount: Operation timed out
    umount: unmount(/Volumes/admin): Operation not supported
I also tried to see if there I can find that the Volumes is somewhere automounted but I wasn't successful in this either.
Anyone having an idea how to resolve the problem?
    Thanks
    Michael

Sometimes that happens when the server gets "lost."
That admin directory is likely a real directory, not a mount point. If so, things you copied into it may not be on the NAS as you think and only copied locally into that folder.
If it is a real folder, you should be able to delete it like any other folder, but may have to resort to the terminal to delete it.  Check for any files in it, first. Copy off what you want to recover, and then try to delete it.
I'm not sure how to tell the difference. If you use Go to Folder in the Go menu, type /Volumes and click Go.
See if it looks like a folder and not an external disk. I'm not sure this will tell you anything as it was originally created as a mount point. However, if your NAS is not connected, then it is likely just an orphaned mount point.
If you mount you NAS, do you see admin-1 mounted, also?

  • Did Time Machine put 274 GB of data in my Volumes directory?

My first hint that something was wrong was that Carbon Copy Cloner complained that my 600GB encrypted disk image wasn't big enough to hold my backup.
I knew that couldn't be write. My data was roughly 300GB.
So I fired up the superb (free) OmniDiskSweeper and found there were 274GB of data in my /Volumes directory (hidden system folder, to visit it with Finder use "Go To Folder" and type Volumes.
That Folder normally holds Unix Aliases, not files.
It turned out to hold two copies of my hard drive, one fairly complete, the other a mere 40GB, both dated within one day of Jan 26, 2011. They were named after my Time Capsule hosted Time Machine image.
I'm pretty sure TIme Machine put them there during a Time Capsule backup. I've never seen reports of this, but I have seen reports of similar behaviors with disrupted Time Machine backups to a local firewire drive.
I deleted the 600,000+ files and OmniDiskSweeper reported Volumes now uses 12kb.
Has anyone else heard reports of this? I'd guess I'm not the only person who's experienced this, though some friends claim I'm cursed. I don't think it impacted my backups much, neither Time Machine nor SuperDuper nor CarbonCopyCloner actually copy the /Volumes folder, there's not supposed to be anything important there.

Maybe a good tip to prevent dopplegangers hidden in Bombich CCC website?

I am going to do this and see if it prevents this problem from happening
A copy of the link's text follows because he sometimes deprecates a real gem posted in his support site.
A caveat for backing up to a remote Macintosh that has no user logged in
For "improved detachability", Mac OS X will unmount any non-internal volumes that are attached to the system when you log out. So, for example, if you log out of your computer while a USB or Firewire hard drive enclosure is attached, you can detach those hard drive enclosures from the system without having to manually unmount them first. This is a good thing — it would be annoying if you had to log back in to your system just to eject a drive. The downside of this, though, is that if you have a scheduled backup task that runs when no user is logged in, the destination volume may be unavailable. For a local backup, CCC will attempt to manually mount the destination volume. When the destination of your backup task is a remote Macintosh, though, CCC will not be able to mount that volume prior to backing up.
If you anticipate backing up to a remote Macintosh that may be sitting at the loginwindow, you can change the behavior of Mac OS X to not unmount detachable volumes. To change this behavior, run this command in the Terminal application on the remote machine:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/autodiskmount AutomountDisksWithoutUserLogin -bool YES
Note for Snow Leopard users: This workaround does not work on Snow Leopard 10.6.0 to 10.6.3. If you require this functionality, please apply the 10.6.4 update (or the latest available) for the best experience.
