Volume format, extended for media ???

I have one internal 250GB HD. I'm planning to buy a second internal 120GB HD Seagate. I will clone my OS and applications folder to the 120GB internal HD and keep my 250 GB HD for media and other data. How should I format those drives using Disk Utility ?
After, I will clone my starting up drive using Carbon Copy to one of my external via Firewire 800 drive for backup. I have a LaCie 250GB and a 500 GB. Should they be format a different way ?
Merci,
Jean

Mac Os Extended is correct. Wheter or not you turn on Journaling for a non-bootable drive is still in debate.

How can I put my recently purchased iTunes movies onto my thumb drive and WD my passport external hard drive. My Mac is saying that can't be copied because it is too large for volumes format

[file] is too large for the volumes format
That is usually an indication that the Volume was never Erased or Partitioned for GUID partition table and Mac OS, and is still in a Windows format.
Mac OS X Extended (journaled) has no such file-size limitations

Thanks.  I do not have the experience on burning discs from iMovie for the movie after editing (ie for video discs players).  It seems that i cannot find the relevant command in the tool bar for this purpsoe.  Would you please show me the way?
The command is gone because iDVD has been discontinued by Apple. After Apple discontinued iDVD they removed the iDVD burning link from iMovie. I still use iDVD sometimes, only because I have an old copy.

You have mentioned about Handbrake as a converter.  What is the RF no. (under Constant Quality) meant?  It seems that the smaller the no. is, the better quality will be.  What is the optimal no.? or should we use the Average Bitrate? Again, what is the best rate?  Furthermore, which format is more suitable or the best: H264 or mpeg 2/4?
I don't know what RF means. When I have used HandBrake, I've used presets that apply to what I want to do, so I don't know the meaning of each individual setting. However, it appears that many of them are listed in the HandBrake User's Guide that is linked from the Help menu in the program:

Photoshop is not amateur-level software, and although it can edit a video, it cannot burn a DVD. Unfortunately, because I still use iMovie, I haven't tried anything else. You might want to read the reviews of various DVD-burning applications in the Mac App Store.

  • Using an External HD with USB 1.1 for Media (Movie files) storage?

    Many thanks for your attention.
For a Media Storage (mostly movies) HD, I ordered a Maxtor OneTouch II with Firewire and the company mistakenly sent me one with USB 1.1 instead.
I remember reading that for Media Storage, only the Firwire connection will work (for Macs). Or that there are a lot of problems with USB.
Before sending this HD back to company, just checking to see if this is so.
Also (when I get the correct Drive), I've heard that in order to store a Movie File, (a movie on Final Cut Pro or iMovie, etc.), the External Hard Drive MUST be formatted as a "Mac Extended (Journaled)" Hard Drive.
Posting here for people's thoughts, opinions (hopefully not contradictory).
    - Ross

    Send it back.
Even USB 2.0 isn't good for media. Fast transfer rate, but not a sustained one.
USB 1 won't work AT ALL.
    RETURN!

  • Greyed out Volume Format box in Disk Utility 10.4.

    Hi,
i'm trying to open up more space on my hard drive by doing a full erase. Available space is about 6GB on a 80GB drive. Running OS X 10.4.11. on a Mac Book Black. Want to install 10.6. SL.
In Disk Utility the Volume Format box is greyed out. It's set as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    How can i change it?
    Thanks for any advice.

How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?
OmniDiskSweeper is likely the easiest/best, and is now free...

  • I just bought a mini raid (1T) and can't find where to format it for use on my desktop iMac. Can anyone help?

i just bought a Raid Mini (1T) and can't find how to format it for my iMac OS X 10.8.5. Can someone help!?

It shouldn't need formatting. That should have been done to make the RAID. If you need to erase the RAID:
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select the RAID volume you wish to format from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.

  • External HD Volume Format?

I will be receiving a Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 300GB external HD. I want to use it on my iBook G4 w/ OS X 10.3.9 and my iBoook G4 w/ OS X 10.4.7 mainly for videos. When I receive it I am told I must erase it and choose a volume format. I would also like to use this on my Win XP PC. Which volume format shoulld I choose when I erase/format this HD; Mac OS Extended, Mac OS Extended (Journaled ), Mac OS Extended (Case-Sensitive Journaled ), Mac OS Extended (Case-Sensitive ), Windows, or other? Any other sugestions? instructions?
    Thanks

I have a similar issue. I have a Maxtor OneTouch III USB 2.0 200GB external hard drive. I have been using it to back up my PC and now I'd like to use it to back up BOTH my ibook g4 and my dell pc (Win xp professional). When i followed the instructions that you gave to erase it, and I opened the disk utility, the only choice that included Dos was MS-DOS File System. It did not have a designation of FAT32.
    So, can this still work?
Also, I see in the disk utility that there is a "partition" tab. Could i partition this external device, putting some memory into a "pc" partition and some into an "apple" partition?
    Thx for your help.

  • Finder cannot open files in the "volume" format.

I had to downgrade from the second Yosemite beta in order to run one of my applications for work that didn't run on Yosemite. I've successful reinstalled Mavericks to the chagrin of finder not working at all. Whenever I mount a DMG I get "Finder cannot open files in the “volume” format." Also, whenever I click to open a folder or a new window in finder, it just crashes and relaunches. I'm going to try to do a fresh install of Mavericks and recover from a backup. Let me know if you guys have faced this same issue and found a solution.
I also had to regain admin privileges for my user which I have done successfully.

I fixed my problem by installing Mavericks again. No need to fully restore.

  • Volume Up/Down/Mute/Media Eject Keys: How do I make them work again?!

So this is ridiculous. I feel like I OUGHTA know how to do this, but somehow it's eluding me! I'm on a PowerPC G5 running Tiger 10.4.11, and I have one of the white 'Pro' keyboards attached. For whatever reason, the bank of buttons on the upper right (volume down/up/mute/Media Eject) are not working, and I can't seem to find anything in the keyboard preferences pane that would indicate controlling their function!
Can anybody fill me in on the really obvious and dumb thing I'm overlooking here?

It was because the keyboard was going into a USB 1 port before reaching the machine!

  • Config. of Format Proposal for Online Adtype of IS-MAM 4.6C

    Hi,
Need to configure Format Proposal for Online adtype, for different periods (raning from 1day to 1 year). Do I need to create 365 Booking Types i.e. D1, D2, D3.....upto D365. Pricing will also be uploaded 365 times for a single Format Proposal, depending on the Booking type.
Or can we create multiple line items for a single Ad e.g. Ad for 36 days can have two items 1) with Booking type M1 and 2) with Booking type D6. This way I will create less no. of Booking types than creating 365 Booking types.
Is there any simple solution for the above requirement.

First in the booking type customization [SAP Media / Advertising Management / Sales / Order / Sales Document / Sales Document Item / Online Item Type / Define Booking Types] maintain 'Settlement Cat.' as  '0 Use booking period for pricing'.
Then instead of creating format proposal for each day create format proposal based on size of the ad..
Then create a condition type  for which unit of measure is DAY. Please copy the standard condition type 'PROT' for this.
For this condition type calculation type is 'Quantity - daily price'.
Scale basic is 'Time period scale u2013 Days'.
    Scale type is 'Base-scale'.
And against this condition type maintain price in JJK1 for a *single day*.
Inside the order maintain a single format proposal. (Please note that Format proposal is used for entering different sizes of ads)
In in 'Date' field you can specify from and to date.
Suppose the ad is from 01/03/2011 to 30/03/2011 (30 days) , enter the 'PublPeriod' from as 01/03/2011 and to as 30/03/2011.
So based on this system will determine quantity of this order as 30 DAY.
And you will get the price for 30 days.
If you specify the  'PublPeriod' from as 01/03/2011 and to as 17/03/2011, system will determine the quantity of this order as 17 DAYS.
Hope this will solve your problem.

  • Why I have only 5 file formats in Adobe Media Encoder?

I have an Adobe Media Encoder CS6. The problem is that, how i have only 5 file formats in the program. These: h.264 and (Legacy), FLV, F4V and MP3. The program doesn't support any more files. If i input a .avi or .3gp file it says: "File format doesn't supported". 1 weak ago it worked for me. Please help me.

The formats that Adobe Media Encoder can use are determined by the other applications that are installed. For example, InDesign and Flash only give AME a very small number of formats; whereas Premiere Pro and After Effects give it many more.

I have a net gear wireless router and a APE working great inside the house, but the wireless signal is weak in the backyard, can I get a net gear extender for the back yard and it will boost our wo
Ireless signal and also send my music to the airport express? Or does the airport express work as a stand alone hub?

Trust me when I say this coming from 20 years of experience.
Get a powered external drive, format it 1 Partition Option: GUID and OS X Extended Journed as the format in Disk Utility.
Download and install Carbon Copy Cloner, clone internal drive to external drive.
Set a schedule to remind you to do it at least once a week, keep it near your charger.
When you plug your charger in, do plug the clone and power the machine up, set the display to sleep only,
    CCC will do the rest.
If you want to boot from it, hold the option/alt and select it Startup Manager.
I've seen many TimeMachine and TimeCapsule nightmares and so far haven't seen a problem from anyone using a bootable clone.
It's simple, it's easy, it's more reliable and more powerful than what Apple does and it only takes plugging in a extra cable.
Make as many clones as you want, keep them time seperated, off site etc. etc.
Cables don't have network issues, clones can be verified in seconds merely by booting from them.
Clones protect your productivity, your up in seconds on a clone despite even the hard drive dying.
Software problem? No sweat, boot of the clone and reverse clone your problems away.
If you want to fuss and muss with half implemented TimeMachine and TimeCapsule network headaches then prepare to suffer.
I don't like to suffer, I bought a Mac not to suffer, but it appears you do with TimeMachine and TimeCapsule.

  • What Size Drive for Media Cache?

    Hi there,
I'm about to edit a large project (5TB of 4K RED footage and counting) on a laptop and am intending to use the setup below for disks. Ideally I would have gone for a "4 disk" setup, but I've maxed out my eSATA connections and would have to use USB for anything else. If coincidentally you can see any problems with this configuration please let me know!
    Disk Setup
    C Drive 750GB (OS, Programs)
3x 2TB Drives in eSATA docking stations (Media, Projects)
Second internal hard disk (Previews, Media Cache, Exports)
I'm intending to install a second hard drive in my laptop to use for the  Media Cache. What size/speed drive should be used for this purpose?
    Thanks!

Well I needed a field laptop and couldn't afford a new desktop on top of that. Haven't had any problems at all so far - perhaps I'm overlooking something?
Perhaps only that the predominant holy grail on this forum is achieving a high PPBM score, not necessarily edit 4K.
I've worked with 2K and 4K files on very slow machines, and I am not an editor - a systems integrator.  It's being done.
Personally, I wouldn't dedicate a disk or a volume to media cache and DB - I believe that money is better spent on the main media volume's speed and capacity.  People who have done it on modern (not old) systems haven't reported much of a performance boost.  But if you find otherwise, I'd love to hear about it.
In your case, since you don't seem to plan to have a relatively fast main media volume (e.g. an eSATA RAID0), a separate drive for media caching and database may have a performance benefit.  The size of it depends on the size of your projects, how complex your project and timelines are, how much rendering they require.  Usually even a small disk (under 100GB) will do just fine for the purpose; the current "sweet spot" is around 256GB SSD and 500-750GB 7200rpm mechanical drive.

  • Want to store and retrived  images  in the BFILE format using inter media

I want to store and retrived images in the BFILE format using inter media.I found a article in the oracle site that Oracle interMedia image supports BFILEs.But this article is not demonstrating the use of BFILEs.Please help me to findout the solution.
    Thanks in advance.
    null

The advantage to using BFILE storage for your is that it's an easy way for Oracle
Multimedia to access your images without importing them into the database.
The disadvantages are that the images are read-only. If you want to scale an image or
convert to a different format, you will need to create a destination image to hold the result. This
will necessarily be a BLOB based image.
Adding images is difficult to do from within an application program. Generally you would add new images to a file system that is accessible to the Oracle Database, then insert new rows in your table with appropriate BFILE pointers to the new images.
BFILE images require separate backup from the database. Also there is not way to transactionally coordinate your BFILE data with your relational data.
If you are using Oracle 11g, you can use the SecureFile option for BLOB storage. This is much faster then the previous BLOB storage (now called BasicFile) and much faster then BFILE also.
That said, below is a code snippet that shows how to insert a BFILE based image, set it's properties, show it's properties and select the BFILE locator to access the content. You would need to use the DBMS_LOB package (in PL/SQL) to read the content. From other APIs, (e.g., Java) you would need to use the proper interfaces to access the BFILE.
Note that you need change the USER, PASSWORD fields in the code. Also you should change the directory location and image name for your use.
    -- create a directory object indicating where the images are stored;
    create or replace directory imgdir as '/tmp';
    -- and grant permission to read to a user;
    grant read on directory imgdir to <USER>;
