Volume in gnome3 is killing me
I recently install a new installation with gnome3 at first windows manager. The problem that I have is that always i reboot the pc the volume is always at the max and everytime a made a mistake the error sound blow my ears, i did delete the .pulse but no luck. Thanks in advance for any help!!!
This is the way at least a get to do what i want. go to /etc/pulse/default.pa and ADD "set-sink-volume 0 30000 " at least you get half of the volumen. Pulse is supoust to read some files from ./pulse but for reason that i donn't know i not reading those so it setting everything to default everytime your reboot. Keep that in mind.

Gnome3 upgrade killed lirc on my media box
Hi All,
I have just upgraded my xbmc media box to gnome3 after sorting out my mirror issues, and I am left with lirc not working.
I have a streamzap usb remote and the 1st thing I noticed is that the kernel module that used to load fine, now fails. The kernel module was called
"lirc_streamzap", however I notice a kernel module called "streamzap" so loaded that instead.
The next thing I noticed was that I did not have and /dec/lirc0 etc style devices and the lirc daemon ( lircd ) is running ...
dmesg gives the following weird errors:

Anyone have any idea what is going on here, looks like a bug in the kernel driver ..More stuff going broken.
Networkmanager (or maybe nm-applet, I have no idea) has decided that it won't work properly either.
After a reboot it wasn't able to connect to any wireless network at all (although wired seems fine). If I fired it up from the console (nm-applet --sm-disable) then at first I got these errors when I tried to connect to my WiFi:
(nm-applet:4094): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_hash_table_foreach: assertion `hash_table != NULL` failed
(nm-applet:4096): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_hash_table_unref: assertion `hash_table != NULL` failed
That was if I ran nm-applet without sudo (I thought it could be a ck-launch-session problem), but adding sudo didn't help much.
After about ten minutes however (and it persisted after reboot) the errors above disappeared, and now I get a "provide the password to the network"-window. The sad part is that it drops a message about there being no keyring secrets for my network, even though I had such a secret before the upgrade.
The even more frustrating part is that even if I manually provide the passphrase for the network, it rejects it as if it was wrong (it fails right after pressing OK).
If i run nm-applet with sudo (even though I should not have to) I get this (among other less important) error:
** (nm-applet:4090): WARNING **: Failed to register as an agent: (32) No session found for uid 0.
So I guess there's no point in trying to use root to start that application.

Browse "chflags hidden" volume in Finder?
I'm using the "chflags hidden" commend to hide my Time Machine drive*, but there are occassions I'd like to browse it in Finder. I know I I can always run "sudo chflags unhidden <volume>" in Terminal, but killing the dock over and over gets old (especially if I set the flag to unhidden, then hidden, then realize I needed to done more thing). Is there a straightforward way of browsing hidden volume in Finder?
*I really just don't want it shown on the desktop along with the other volumes, but don't know a way to hide only on the DesktopYou can toggle the Finder to display hidden files then toggle it back, as you know. But the Finder is not able to access hidden files otherwise.

If you go over them you'll notice that, using find, some of the entries are out of order but I haven't figured out what the problem is. If I only wanted to do this for my movies folder that would be fine and I would just use ls -a but I would prefer to do it for my entire external HDD which also has ~11000 songs on it from hundreds of artists so I would hate to do it for each directory. Is there either some way I can do this easier or some other command (I've been told to look into glob but I can't figure out how to use it) that would do it better? Note: I get the same result from using
find . -type f > ./FILES
as well.

Disk warrior won't work – error 2153, 4200
Hi,
I have a g5 dual core 2.0g with 2 drives installed in it, lately I have not been able to use disk warrior on my primary drive. I find this confusing since disk warrior used to work fine for this drive.
Here are the problems that I'm encountering:
1) I can't boot from the disk warrior cd, my computer hangs at the 1st grey apple screen with the fan spinning at full tilt and nothing happening for at least 10 mins. Additionally, there are some odd graphics artifacts on the startup screen.
2) Once I've booted up in my secondary drive, I can't use disk warrior to repair my startup drive, I get an error message that says the disk is still in use, and give the error code 2153, 4200.
I have preformed the standard suite of permission repairs, and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem.
Cheers
G5 Dual 2.0g Mac OS X (10.4.3) macbook pro 2.0gAll right, I figured this on out on my own.
It appears that retrospect was running at all times regards of which internal disk I was using, so I could never unmount the volume I was trying to fix – hence the disk warrior errors 2153, 4200.
On the advice of this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=744865 I opened terminal and typed ] /bin/ps auxww and found two process related to retrospect running from the other volume. Once I killed these, disk warrior worked like a charm.

[GNOME3] Volume Balance Lost After Reboot
Hello!
I'm using GNOME3 on a fully updated Arch x64 installation. After every reboot, the volume balance has shifted to the right. I have to enter the sound settings, output, and then restore the balance slider to the center.
The problem has been with me for some weeks now but I rarely reboot so I haven't suffered from it that much. However, now I am required to dual boot with Windows, and thus, this problem gets really annoying...
Any tips for what I could try? I have of course searched the Internet (including this forum).I don't run Gnome, so this might not work, but try this.
Once you have your volume/balance set the way you like, do (as root) from a terminal:
$ alsactl store
(If you have more than one sound card, you may need to specify that also, see the man page for alsactl.)
This will save your sound card settings to the file /etc/asound.state.
In your rc.conf, add 'alsa' to the DAEMONS line. This will run the script /etc/rc.d/alsa at start up which will run the command
/usr/sbin/alsactl restore
which loads the values from /etc/asound.state into the sound card, thus restoring your settings.
It is likely that Gnome may set the sound card some other way, and unfortunately, I can't help you in that case. -
In the Sound Settings, Output volume bar has a cap bar at 100%, is there a way to set this as the max volume on the sound panel applet and keyboard hotkeys? Right now if I max out the volume via panel or with keyboard it becomes distorted (since it's at a level like ~150%)
To be clear, I when I max out the volume on the sound panel app, or via keyboard hotkey, I want it to stop at the 100% line indicated in Sound Settings. If I want to go over 100% I have to manually increase it from the sound settings. This is how I'm used to it working in the past.
Last edited by proxima_centauri (2011-05-04 20:02:40)Just thought I'd update that I still have the same issue with sound clipping in gnome-control-center 3.0.1.1-1
Is this still occurring for anyone else?
EDIT: I should note I am no longer using the testing repo since GNOME3 hit extra, should a mod like to move the thread.

Changing volume kills all browser sessions
About half the time I either increase, decrease or mute my volume via my keyboard, all open broswer sessions are killed. I can be logged into multiple websites using both Safari and Firefox and when I hit funtion keys F10, F11 or F12 on my aluminium Apple Extended keyboard, all open browser sessions instantly close. This has been going on since OSX 10.7.0
I have tried resetting all of my keyboard settings to default and it hasn't helped. It's making me insane!

Shared volume file transfers fail and kill my RAID. Help!
Hi all,
I'm not an IT expert by any stretch, so please go easy if my questions are stupid. First, a quick rundown of my setup:
Xserve Quad with 10.5.2
Areca 1220ML RAID card (this is a hardware RAID card with 256MB)
NORCO 1220DS 8-drive RAID box
Multiple sharepoints all coming from RAID box (one 4-drive RAID5 and several single drive passthroughs)
Trunked 2GB connections to most client machines, client connect using AFP
I have been experiencing potential signs of the issues others are having here (AFP etc.) but the most troubling is that occasionally, when attempting to move a folder from one sharepoint to another (whether doing this from a client machine or on the server directly) or when moving files from a client machine to the sharepoint, finder will hang after moving 84kb or so, I get the beachball, and end up having no choice but to force reboot the system. Upon restart, sometimes the RAID volumes are all present and working, but several times the drives just disappeared outright and the admin tool for the RAID card says the RAID volume/passthrough drive has failed. I have to rebuild them and lose every ounce of data. Yay!
Is this a familiar/known type of problem to anyone out there? I am not quick to assume the card is at fault, as it is a reasonably expensive hardware-based RAID card and its drivers are built in to with Leopard Server 10.5 (there is even speculation that Apple's own RAID card is based on Areca's) which tells me they've passed a quality test to some degree.
This problem doesn't always happen, and there are times where it will happily transfer large quantities of giant files with no problems. It usually seems to glitch out when some time has passed since the last attempted file transfer, which makes me wonder if this might be part of the dreaded AFP disconnect issues.I just wanted to close this question out and let the community know that I isolated the problem down to my RAID box, the NORCO DS-1240. These things have been noted to have build issues, including the excessive use of solder and other issues that lead to shorting out etc.
After hours in tech support land, I replaced it with a Enhance Technologies EnhanceBox and everything now works beautifully. -
OS X 10.4.3 Killed the volume on my iTunes
I am running iTunes 6.0.1. Last night I upgraded to OS X 10.4.3. At first my iTunes wouldn't play at all, so I ran the disk utility to repair permissions. Now the iTunes plays, but the volume, even at maximum, is annoyingly low. It used to go loud enough and more. Now it's just irritating me because I keep wanting to turn it up, but can't.
are you using Sound Check?

Optical sound out kills mac volume control
Using standard audio out to powered speaker allows you to control volume from
the desktop, or volume keys on keyboard.
When using optic out to an amp, all volume control at mac end is lost, although sound through amp is fantastic, I would still like to control volume from my keyboard, is there any way of doing this?I believe that's the way it's designed. You're expected to control the volume out of your stereo, not the Mac. Since there's no way to use the digital optical connection without a stereo, they expect you to control volume from the stereo.

Playback is killing vocals.. podcast playback very low volume
Similar to the recent post as follows:
my brother told me to listen to the music on his ipod because he said it didn't sound right. so i did and it's completely messed up. the music is louder than the singing. on parts of songs without music, i turned up the volume and listened to the voices and they sound horrible. it sounds like someone who cannot sing at all. i've fixed many problems with my ipod, my brother's ipod, my sister's ipod, and my mom's ipod, but i have no idea how to fix this or even if there is a way to fix this. any ideas?
My Ipod 2nd gen does the same thing. this string got fixed by "magic" anyone know of any other ideas.
ThanksTried a couple of sets of headphones.. still have the same problem. It doesnt seem to change when I wiggle the headphone jack around. My Ipod works OK when I plug it into my car adaptor it seems like just the headphone output is affected.
I have reset, restored, tried volume adjustement equalizer preset on get info in it tunes. It seems like firmware not hardware but I suppose I could have a problem with the audio output driver. -
Volume graphic is killing my I pod touch
My 16 gb touch started going haywire a couple of months ago.Too many symptoms to list but I've restored ect. & the main culprit seems to be when I play music or you tube the black speaker graphic comes on & everything shuts down just after the cancel option flashes up.Also everytime I charge the battery I have to 'reset network settings' to go on the Internet. Any help welcome....
Purchase and use a set of amplified speakers.
If you are using headphones, some are louder than other.
Also go to Settings>Sounds and see if a Volume Limit is set. It applies only to headphones.
Further, if the iPod was officially sold in the EU, they require a lower max volume from the headphones jack that others countries. -
Gnome3 volume level set to 0 after restart
I believe pulseaudio is involved, but I have no idea how to fix it.
There is an old post from this forum that suggests enabling alsa daemon will fix it, but there is no /etc/rc.d/alsa for me. But alsa is installed:
# pacman -Qs alsa
local/alsa-lib 1.0.25-1
An alternative implementation of Linux sound support
local/alsa-plugins 1.0.25-1
Extra alsa plugins
local/pulseaudio-alsa 2-1
