Volume keys not working

When I change from British English to Polish language (System Preferences/Language & Region) on my MacBook running OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 and perform the obligatory reboot, the volume keys on the keyboard no longer work. I have tried a PRAM reset (Option, Command (⌘), P, and R) to no avail. Internal speakers are selected in System Preferences/Sound but the volume controls are greyed out.
Thanks for any suggestions or remedies.

Sounds like your OS maybe at fault. Try repairing your permissions using Disk Utility first.
If that doesn't work you should try to reinstall your OS by way of your Tiger DVD or CD using the Archive option, preserving the network settings.
After your restart, go to the Apple Menu and choose Software Update to update your OS and other software then restart. After you do this everything should be fine.
Now if you have a Mac still under warranty, call Apple Tech Support at 1 800 275-2273 if the above doesn't help.

Did you already try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comeback again?
If this does not boring back a working volume control, and to rule out a software issue, set it up as new device, explained here:

    Re: iPhone 4S sound problems
    Dec 29, 2011 2:05 PM (in response to unowen57)
    Hi Guys,
I have post eariler on another forum and I have the same problem, I have tried all the things listed here and nothing was perminant in fixing this painful iphone hating problem.... and failed.  You probably have the problem when you use youtube or your music external speaker that there is no volume bar and no sound.   I have had the same problem But I need to happily say that I now have the fix!!!!  This worked for me and I fixed it by myself so you don't need to go to apple or service centre or anything.
Ok I like so many of you here truly believed this was as IO5 issue as it only dropped the sound on the speakers once that IO5 update came along.  I tried a bunch of reset, reboots, home clicks, lock and unlocks, to fix this and all failed.  some worked for an hour but then failed.  hours of my life that I will never get back.   but since I have learnt this is not a IO5 problem but a hardware issue! ...  and in paticualar is has to do with your bottom connection.  Your phone is thinking it is docked all the time.
To fix the no sound problem what you need is...
    1.  a torch
    2.  a tooth brush
    3.  methalated spirits
    4. a butter knife
    Step 1.
get your torch and shine it down the bottom connection plate to see what kind of dust, sand, hair or anything you have stuck in there.   all that need to be removed!  everything!  it might look clean but still thats ok go to step 2.
    step 2.
Turn on your music app and put the speakers on!  If your phone is like mine it should not work.  you most probably don't even have the volume display to turn it on but its ok, just do it! and it should still play with no sound.   its important you try and run the speakers as this will show you that it is a hardware problem.
    step 3.
Dip your tooth brush into some methated sprits.   then at your sink tap the exess metho out of your brush as you just want the brushes to be slightly damp, not soaking wet and then scrub the bottom connetiors on your iphone.  work the brush back and forward in a way that scoops the dirt out of the phone, not just pushing it side to side.
(As you bushing you should notice the volume bar come back on or off as you scub.   This happened to me and that is how I realised I was on the right track to fixing this problem as I was doing something external that was actually controling when the volume display came on or off.   but once I cleaned it this still didn't fix the problem...)
    Step 4.
Use the back side of a butter knife (not the sharp side) to gently slide over the connectors on the iphone.  Do this gently as you are only pushing down on the tiny metal contect bars and you should notice the volume display come on again.  slide it back and forward.  Now the area of interest is about 2/3 along the connection plate to the right.   This is the area that has the infomation sent when your iphone thinks its docked.
This has worked for me and I have not had a problem since I did this 2 weeks ago.   I have since learnt that the new IOS 5 has activated a different part of the bottom conectors.  if you have been using dodgy connectors or unapproved apple cables (as I was)  any damage or hair and dirt on the terminal this is effecting it.  Try it.   just remember if you can do something external to your phone then there lies the problem.
Hope this works for your phone as it did for mine.
    Cheers

Check the setting in Keyboard, Keyboard Tab, that the "Use all F1, F2, ect. keys as standard function keys" isn't checked.

  • Volume keys not working on Apple 10-key keyboard.

    Hi everyone,
After the cat spilled a glass of water on my wireless keyboard I had to get a new one. I asked the folks at my local Apple store both over the phone and in person if the 10-key keyboard (non-wireless) they were going to sell me was compatible with Mac OS X version 10.5.8 (I think I'm Leopard) and they assured me it was.
When I hit the volume keys, it initially used the assigned function of the F10, F11, and F12 keys (manipulated the windows and dashboard). I removed those key assignments through system preferences but now the volume keys do absolutely nothing. I tried looking for volume controls through the assignments but couldn't even find them to assign the F10, F11 and F12 keys to them.
Does anyone have any advice? It would be most deeply appreciated.

So was your original keyboard with the white plastic surround and now you have an aluminum one?
You probably need this firmware update if that is the case:

  • Keyboard volume keys not working with win7

I installed Win7 yesterday and have lost the use of the volume control keys, as well as the display brightness keys. I come from XP where they were working.

Thank you for your reply. I thought I was running BC 3.2 32-bit  but took a look and it's 3.1.10.
Downloaded the 3.2 32-bit BC update but it wouldn't install because of 2- errors:

I then pressed "ignore" and got:

  • Volume keys not working, what was the name of the process which controlled it?

Well because I hate programs that minimize my current window or stop what I'm currently doing.... I got really angry when HP support assistant minimized my tf2 window to tell me it was downloading updates.
As a result, I opened up the task manager and started ending almost every process which began with "hp"
Along with the the process which was probably in control of the very useful volume control buttons on my keyboard, so I was hoping if someone could give me the name of the process I ended so I can get these keys working again.
    This question was solved.

The program is called Quick Launch. It might be something like QLBCTRL.exe.

  • Brightness and volume keys not working after switch to Yosemite

Once Yosemite was installed, the brightness (F1, F2) and volume (F10, F11, F12) keys on my macbook pro stopped working. I have already checked the System Pref>Keyboard and unchecked the "standard function" box, done an SMC and PRAM reset, to no avail. My sound in and out are both set to built-in. Any suggestions?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

When iOS 6.1 comes out I would update.

  • Sound key not working

volume key not working ofter last update

    Hello Amandodsouza,
It sounds like you are experiencing some unexpected behaviour with the on screen keyboard after updating to iOS 7.1.1. I would start by closing all the running apps on the phone:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that and restart the phone and test the issue again:

I just purchased a new wired keyboard for imac and brightness and volume control keys not working . i have tried adjusting keyboard settings. I have software version 10.5.8. Do I need to upgrade software. Thank you for any help.

  • Certain keys not working. (backspace, brightness, volume)

Recently, the keys on my Macbook Air (mid-11') has not been working properly and I'm unsure as to why this happened. I noticed in the keyboard viewer that sometimes when I press the arrow keys or such, the fn keys stick and doesn't unstick until i use my cursor in order to click on the key. The keys such as the delete, brightness settings, and volume are not working as it should. Sometimes it does, other times it doesnt not. For example, my delete key now only deletes from the left to right. Brightness settings only work when I change to setting to when I hold FN to use f1 f2. My volume settings randomly switched me to dashboard and desktop 2. It should be noted that everything works fine when i type, delete, etc when I restart the computer and go

    Hi orangepekoe,
If the keyboard on your MacBook Air is responding erratically, try the following troubleshooting steps:
OS X Yosemite: Reset your computer’s PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18761
OS X Yosemite: Reset your computer’s PRAM
If your Mac doesn’t seem to be remembering your speaker volume, display resolution, or the disk it should be using during startup, you may need to reset your computer’s PRAM.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
Important:   To print these instructions, click the Share button  in the Help window, then choose Print.
Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Option, Command (⌘), P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on your Mac.
Immediately press and hold the Option-Command-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Continue holding the keys down until your Mac restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting your computer’s PRAM, you may need to update your speaker volume, display resolution, and startup disk preferences. For more information about PRAM, see the Apple Support article About NVRAM and PRAM.
