Volume Levels in Logic?

OK, this problem has been baffling me for two days now...
MacBook Pro, Logic 9.1.7, Lion OSX 10.7.4, MOTU Traveler mk3 + MOTU 8Pre - firmware is up to date, CueMix is up to date (1.6)
Recording levels of Audio tracks in Logic don't go past about 20%.  That includes the meters as you're recording as well as the waveforms.  I did a vocal session yesterday and had to add +11.5 dBs to the audio files to get the waveforms in a good place.  (Oddly, adding this much gain did not add any background hiss or anything like that.)
And this happens on all inputs, no matter what mic, what cables, what pre amp I'm using, (I've tried them all) even my synth going directly into the Traveller.  I can push all the levels everywhere - on the synth, on the mic pre-amps on the Traveller, the trim in CueMix, basically every single level I can find I pushed to the max so that everything is distorted like crazy and still Logic only registers about 20% on the meters!  It's distorted like mad, but still only registers about 20%.  It's like it hits a wall as if it's the top of the meter, except it's only about 20% up the meter.
I've tried adjusting (what seems like) every audio setting in Logic, I've futzed with (what seems like) every setting on the Traveler mk3 and CueMix including trying different clock sources and what not.  Nothing, still the same problem.
Also I've tried computer restarts, I've power cycled my MOTU devices.  Nothing.
And this is only on Audio Input tracks.  All of my software instruments register at normal levels.
I will say that this might be an issue with Lion, because this is the first time I've tried to record audio in Logic since I upgraded to Lion a couple of weeks ago... (Yes, I know... I'm behind the times.)  I'm at a loss right now, and I'm actually wondering if upgrading to Mountain Lion is my next attempt at a solution.
Anybody have anything?  Something I haven't tried?  Anybody hear of anyone else having a similar problem?
Thanks guys, I appreciate the help!!

Well, this was a great line of attack.  I always forget about trashing preference files.  But, I just spent the last couple of hours trashing preference files for Logic, for CueMix, MOTU and basically ALL the Apple Audio related preference files I can find.  Still the same issue.  I even delved deeper into CueMix than I thought I could to no avail.  I'm becoming more and more stumped as I go along here.
I'm debating whether I should try a factory re-set of the Traveler or an upgrade to Mountain Lion next.  A factory re-set of the Traveler would really be a PAIN because I've got everything set up and labeled the way I want.  To re-build that will be a nightmare.
Ugh...
Oh, and the Traveler firmware is current according to the MOTU website.  Granted the last firmware update was 3 years ago.  Also, upon closer inspection I realized that the CueMix software was not current it was 1.6.52xxx as opposed to the latest 1.6.55333.  (I guess I ignored the numbers after the 1.6 because they weren't followed by a dot)  So I installed that, trashed the preferences again.... and.... still the same issue!
The MOTU user forum doesn't have any threads along these lines... but maybe I'll start one over there as well.

Volume levels in logic pro X keep jumping up to  5.2 and  5.0 by itself. There are no plugins nor automation activated on tracks? how can i stop the track levels from jumping?
What do i do to avoid this?

I and the same problem and neither of these fixes solved it. Defintely not a controller problem as guessed.
The problem was solved by going to the step editor - similar to automation - but more hidden, and also taking place in the track at a point that I had trimmed out that heppened before the beginning of the composition.
I solved the problem by going into the step editor of the track and deleting the bar in the volume track that kept setting it, and not showing up as an automation curve.
I found this problem infuriating ,I really hope this solution helps.

• How can l keep the same track mixer volume levels in logic when bouncing a project ? HELP !!!

When l bounce a project, all of the mixer levels return at the defult level automatically, they do not stay at the levels l require (levels l have previously set for each track). Which means l do not get each track at the volume l need when it is made into an mp3.
Below is an example from a help-discussion website with someone who has the exact same problem as me. However, none of the suggestions the people have made on it will resolve the on-going problem for either of us :
http://www.logicprohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=374597 (there is a clear explanation of the problem on this link with helpful screen shots)
Any help, suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.
Many thanks.

I gave the most probable cause/solution in that thread:
Open the event list (E), select and remove all MIDI CC 7  messages from all tracks/regions.
To select all MIDI CC 7 messages in one region, first select one, then hit shift-S.

• Creating CDs in Logic with proper volume levels

I took some songs off of both audio tape and CD, and combined them into 1 compilation. I originally recorded the audio tapes into logic, then bounced them as AAC files. Then I brought those AAC files, plus songs from commercial CDs into iTunes and burned everything to a CD. However, all the volume levels were mismatched....the more I read about iTunes the more it sounds like the program does not do a good job at evening out all the volumes. Is it possible to use Logic to do this, and even burn the CD within Logic...I assume Logic would have this capability based upon it sophistication, Im just not sure how to do it. Thanks!

Also, is there any way to measure the level of each track within Logic
double click on the region to open it in the Sample editor window.
There under Functions select Change gain...Search maximum
Have you tried using Waveburner?

• Audio levels in logic

Why is the recording level in Logic way lower then my preamp? If I send a signal into my analog preamp, it's way lower in logic and the wave for is way lower too.

Hi Tegtours
The Apogee interfaces have the ability to be calibrated to different operating levels. So it could be a case of re-calibrating or at least resetting to the "factory" conditions.
The 1272 will probably have been racked by an independent tech, so that's a bit of a wild card in terms of how it's wired and Dan Alexander say's it' a line amp, I'll defer to him as he's a Neve expert.
+WHAT IS A NEVE 1272?+
+A 1272 is a line amp/summing buss amp from the circa 1970-76 era of neve consoles, such as 8048,8014,8016,and bcm10 portable consoles.+
+A 1272 is not a mic pre, nor was it ever used by neve as such.+
+However, when asked what he thought about people rewiring the 1272 as a mic pre, Ruperts' answer was" why not? It's all the same stuff in there".+
+Inside of a 1272, one finds an input transformer, a line amp card, and an output transformer.+
+Some enterprising techno gentlemen rewire these components and with the addition of appropriate volume and gain switches, build a preamp that emulates that found in a 1073( or other class a) input module.+
+The only problem occurs when one attempts to get much over 50 db of gain, which is accomplished in a 1073 by the insertion of an additional amp card. When wringing that extra gain out of one amp card, one encounters frequency response and distortion anomalies. However, assuming that the wiring is done properly, a1272 can be made into a mic pre that exactly emulates the classic neve class a preamp 1073/1064/1066/1089/1084 type of circuit and of course , done right, that sounds wonderful....+

If you've purchased a 1272 ( modified to be a mic amp ) from a reputable tech, I'm sure they'll be happy to show you how to interface it correctly.
Which output are you using from the P2 and what kind of cabling ?

• Higher volume level when bounced to iTunes

The volume level of a bounced, (completed) tune I send to iTunes is significantly higher than when it is in the Logic Express program and I am working on it. Is this because it is a 32-bit file concerting to 16-bit? Are 16-bit files louder? Is it because it is a "flattened" file? Is this normal behaviour? I am not complaining, as I have thought the levels in Logic are too low (well, significantly lower than a CD or purchased AAC file. Any enlightment would be appreciated.

Hi,
perhaps, you have used the normalize checkbox of the bounce function. Normalizing raises (or lowers) the volume of a bounced file so that it's loudest peak is exactly at 0dbfs. So, a very soft song will probably be raised in volume. A song with loud peaks that exceed 0db may be lowered in volume. But you could also get inpredictable results, for instance, if you have an average soft song with one big peak, the whole song will be lowered in volume because of this one peak.
You can avoid these strange effects by incorporating a limiter plugin *as last plugin* in the stereo output channel from which every bounce is taken. In the limiter, raise the gain just enough to have a good signal that is just below 0db, and the limiter will cut off everything that eventually will peak above it.

• Volume level

is the only place to adjust the volume level of a selected "track" with those volume level lines. They seem to make such a little difference and it seems as though certain audio clips just cant even get loud. There must be a logical answer , i know it. Can anyone help?

ok. I'll try, if you insist.
You should be able to adjust the levels using the line within the tracks and by marking points and pulling the tracks up and down. This works fine for everyone - except, apparently - you.
Perhaps your tracks are intrinsically not loud enough? In which case - and forgive me, but I'm not in front of my FCP computer right now - find the menu item called "normalise". It's in the latets evrsion of FCP, but I'm not sure if it's in earlier versions. By applying that you will increase the track level to the maximum, and you can then, perhaps find the feature within the timeline will work better for you.

• Volume level control gets stuck...

I keep getting this quirky thing where my volume level gets stuck. I press the volume buttons and the level indicator changes, and the sound can mute, but the volume doesn't actually change. It seems to stick at around 25%.
My workaround is to open the Sound options in the *System Preferences* and switch from *Internal Speakers* back to *Line Out*. This is on a Mac Pro, by the way.
The problem seems to occur when waking from sleep state, but it doesn't happen every time. I almost feel like it has something to do with the duration of sleep, but I'm really not certain. It's quite a small problem, but I'd still like to see if anybody else has been experienced it.

HI Devin,
Try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM.

• How can a consistent volume level be set for all the songs in an iTunes library?

The volume of the songs in my iTunes library varies significantly when played on my iPod.  Is there any way of setting a consistent/equal volume for the songs in my library so that I don't have to change the volume level when listening to my iPod?

I have used the $30 iVolume utility to equalize my iTunes song's volume for several years and it works well. I just wish it worked for music videos.  iVolume is available on the Mac  App Store, or you can try before you buy at the developer's site: http://www.mani.de/en/ivolume/index.html

• Using compressor DVD Studio Pro 4 will only accept ac3 format in the burn process. ac3 makes a nnsense of the good sound delivered, 30% reduction in volume, auto volume levelling giving unwanted volume variations. Used to be able to burn using AIFF/WAVE,

AS Above. Edited in FCPX. Excellent sound file. Using Compressor 4 to DVD Studio 4. Wanting AIFF or WAVE sound for acurate sound.
Previously DVD Studio 4 has accepted AIFF etc and delivered sound as reuired. Now, during the burn process everything other than ac3 is declined as 'video bit rate too high', but will burn if the AIFF format is replaced with ac3 (which I presume meanss the 'video bit rate too high' is referring to the sound file)
The issue with ac3 format is the huge reduction in original volume and worse, the 'auto volume levelling' that makes a nonsense of the original soundtrack - with simply aweful unwanted variations in volume Throughout the  the dvd.
I have tried everything I can think of to get around this. The 'volume gain' in compressor doesn't make any difference. Exporting just AIFF and the Video to DVD 4 doesn't make any difference, it always declines anything but the aweful sound ac3 delivers.
I have customers awaiting a musci DVD, not with thei quality I can't.
Cheers
Phil

The total video bit rate is determined by audio & video. Depending on what rate your video file was encoded at will determine how much room is left for audio. PCM(aiff/wav) audio requires a bigger piece of the pie. Video bit rate too high means your overall(video+audio) rate is going above 9Mbps which the format won't allow. The only way to use aiff would be to lower your video file's data rate. The length of your program is also a factor in all of this.
I had some problems in the past with using aiff instead ac3. Although there shouldn't be any issue I experienced playback issues on some players that couldn't be explained but were cleared up by ac3.  I have been using the same specs as Dave's suggestion for almost nine years and have not had any issues with mix, quality, or levels.

• Can I have multiple volume levels in one track?

I have a track composed of audio from a cassette recorder of a now deceased relative's voice.
Since the cassette was turned on and off during recording, the recordings are at different volumes.
I have been able to import the cassette into a GarageBand project, and delete dead space, but now I find that the volume is not consistent.
Any way to remedy that? I am wondering if I need to chop it up and make more than one track, and adjust the volume on each track? Will this work as long as the tracks don't overlap?
And then do I send the finished product to iTunes in order to be able to use it in an iMovie?
Or can I drag it right from GarageBand to iMovie?
Many thanks, I'm a very new GarageBand user.

Hi saiyed adil,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It appears that your iPhone 5s sometimes produces low sound, but a restart corrects it.
It can take some time to isolate and resolve intermittent issues like this one, and I'd recommend going through the steps in this guide the next time it occurs:

• Is there any "mechanical" helper to get my volume levels the same?

I create playlists from ratings,(and comments),- and albums have different volume levels. As I always use my ipod to go to sleep, it is very destructive, to not be able to hear my music one minute, and then have it much too loud the next.
Is there ANYTHING, free or chargeable, physical or software, that can help me get my itunes library to all the same volume level. My problem is agrivated by the fact that I do have some shared downloads, and also someone put my vynils onto cd for me, but at a lower volume.
I might add, that I'm still a learner on the computer. I have been told to change the soundcheck -playback -preferences -itunes. I have tried it, ticked and unticked - it doesn't make any difference.
I'd be very gratefull for some advice. Please HELP, this has been going on for ages. Thank you, in anticipation.

I'm SO very grateful for your help! Have downloaded it, and have started to use it, but havn't listened to results yet.(just about to) THANKYOU SO MUCH.
Thankyou so much again, this could be the end of a long (negative) era!
A bit later: have listened to a little, seems a huge amount better. will update when used properley.
I'm anticipating some being way out. Though it says it can overcome old changed volume levels, is it best in your opinion, to put them back to original setting?
Many Best Wishes Vonnie

• 1020 There is no lock for ringer volume level, but...

Earlier today I posted in this Community regarding the Subject issue. Received good reply and marked it as a Solution. Had additional thoughts so I'm doing this new Post. Same Subject as before. I had asked if it's possible to LOCK the ring volume, at 10 for example, it's loudest, so I can hear it ring no matter what. I've been unpleasently surprised several times when my ringer rings BUT the volume is much much lower, way too low (2 or 3 maybe), way lower from where I had set it, up at (10). So then, I immediately adjust the volume back to 10, where I want it to stay, always. The volume up and down rocker button works fine. Problem is, the unexpexted, surprising and unwanted way very low ringer volume that causes me to MISS SOME CALLS. I have four kids. As a parent, missing calls can be a SERIOUS matter. If I could LOCK my ringer volume at 10 then I'll be happier. For me, thr parent, this tricky too low ringer volume problem is more than an annoying tech glich. What causes this problem, you may ask? The volume goes down without wanting it to do that because that while the phone is unlocked and in any kind of use or even while it is in screen lock mode, the very handling of the phone will sometimes unintendedly, unknowingly, without noticing it, press the down volume part of the volume rocker buttom. After all, the down volume part of the rocker button is the located at the lower end of that rocker and is closer to the center of the phone and close to the power button. That's right where anybody normally holds and works the phone, right there. AND worse yet, it takes only a little bit of pressure to accidently push the down volume rocker button. No wonder the down volume button unwillingly gets pressed alot. Also, unwanted down volume change, by pressing of the volume button, can happen in many ways such as in a pocket, carrying it in your hand, passing the phone around, lots of ways. This unwanted down volume change can and does happen on the 1020 while calling, texting, using apps and even during the screen lock mode, and that is with or without the pass code feature enabled. Only time this can't happen is when the phone is completely off and dark. I've searched the posts and don't find anyone else saying this. That doesn't mean it's not a real problem, like for us parents and others. But I know that what I say is correct, to my knowledge, because today an MS WP Community Moderator and also a Lumina Community contributor agreed with what I'm experiencing. This problem has always happened with my 1020 and my previous 920 always did exactly the same type of low volume TRICK. No updates are causing this problem along the way. It's just now that I got fed up enough to confirm within the Communities that there is NO WAY TO LOCK THE RINGER VOLUME on the 1020. I'm ranting about it to you fellow Lumina users. If you experience this, if it bugs you, if you agree that it's more than a mere tech glich nuisance, that it's causing missed calls for family and business, then please post in on this Lumina Community and demand a fix for it. I'm not a phone software expert but I'll bet that a minor software tweek followed by an update, is easily possible. This fix SHOULD be good for existing Lumina models, not just for future ones. I'm gonna work this. It can happen more surely and quickly if those Lumina users who share my concern will post about it. This post is not a critique nor does it infer defects in software or phones. I just want to peel a layer off this onion.

As far as the phone is locked, the volume key will not function .. so this should not affect the volume level.
