Volume Meters: iMovie vs Garageband

Hi all
I really need some help with this...
I am trying to create some music video files for a performance at the end of March using Garageband to create the audio then exporting the audio then importing it into iMovie.
However, I am running into an issue...
Basically when I am creating my audio in Garageband I ensure that the volume meter is not going into the Yellow/Red to ensure there is no distortion when played through a PA system... however, after exporting the music file then importing it into iMovie the track in iMovie is going into the yellow and red again forcing me to turn the audio down again, however, I am worried that I am going to loose too much volume and the videos will be too quiet when played through the PA system. Could anybody advise.
Please note that I have tried exporting the audio out of Garageband both with and without normalisation, both give same results just with the normalised track going more into the yellow/red than the non-normalised track.
Thanks
James

Do you mean creating the video first, then importing that into GB, then editing the audio to match the video process?
Yes, that's my suggestion.
That's the way it's "done" in the professional world.
I've used GarageBand a bit, but I'm not familiar with the normalization feature.

  • Iphoto and imovie and garageband don't work!!

iphoto and imovie and garageband will not reinstall, but they worked after upgrading to mountain lion, but have had to do a clean install and i can't get them to install now, any suggestions please?
    thanks!

    I have the same probleme
Nevethless, I just tried the following scenario :
On my Imac (OS X Lion), I have two user accounts, mine and one for my daughter.
    1. If my daughter send me an email from her account and her Iphoto using iphoto template, I receive her email on my accouint perfectly. I do not have  the message "plug-in missing".
    2. On the other hand, if I send  an email from my account and my Iphoto using iphoto template to my daughter, she receives my email on her account with the message "plug-in missing".
It seems the probleme comes from either my iphoto or my domain an dnot from my mail application. But no idea to fix it.

  • Logic 8 pro's volume meters are totally skrewed please someone help :)

is anyone else experiencing difficulties in getting the volume meters on the channel strips in the mixer view to display the correct level? how am i supposed to mix a project down if i cannot see what level everything is playing at? for example, i could have a strip turned all the way down but the meter reads it to be clipping even though its not making a single sound. someone [please help me, im about to go crazy! thanks in advance

Yes, you have Pre-Fader metering on, and it is what you want to learn to use, which is to see the truth of what is hitting the channel before the fader. Use your ears to adjust your levels. This is how we worked in the analog console/tape recorder days and it is still the best mix practice.
While it is true that you cannot technically clip the channels in 32 bit float, only the output, if in general you keep those levels under control and not going into the red, you will get a better sounding mix. You want to make sure that if you i.e. start with a Software Instrument that its output is not too hot going into i.e. a Channel EQ on the 1st insert, and that its output is not too hot going into a Compressor on the 2nd insert, etc. especially with 3rd party plug-ins that are more susceptible to sonic distortion (not clipping, I know) than Logic's included plug-ins.
There are those who disagree with this, but frankly I have yet to hear a good sounding mix from any of them.

  • I deleted photobooth by accident and i have tried to get it back with the setup disk, i got imovie and garageband back but not photobooth. Any ideas?

i deleted photobooth by accident and i have tried to get it back with the setup disk, i got imovie and garageband back but not photobooth. Any ideas?

PhotoBooth is not on the iLife disk which has iMovie and Garage Band.  PhotoBooth is integrated into OSX, so it's not going to be easy to get back.  You'll need to get it from the recovery disk or partition.  Which OSX are you using so we can point you in the right direction.  NEVER delete any of the OSX programs.

  • I am not able to update iPhoto, iMovie and garageband on my macbook pro. these three apps came installed with ilife suite.

I am unable to update iphoto, imovie, and Garageband on my Macbook Pro.  I understand that these apps are part of ilife suite.  Purchased Macbook at Best Buy January 2012.  All software is updated.  I recieve message asking me to sign into account that I purchased these apps from.  I am signed in , however I did not purchase these apps they came on Macbook.  I also tried deleting Garageband and re-installing it. Now Garageband says accept but Macbook will not accept.  Anyone else have this problem and were you able to resolve it.

The fact that they were preinstalled is why they are supposed to appear in the Purchased pane, in a temporary area labeled Purchases, for you to accept. Not doing so soon after you got the Mac has messed this process up.
    To get things back on track properly try these steps;
    Updating Pre-installed iLife apps -
1 - Log out and quit iTunes and the Mac App Store (MAS)
2 - Go to System Prefs/Users & Groups/~user/Password and enter the Apple ID connected to your iTunes/Mac App Store account. Close Sys Prefs
    3 - Delete /Mac HD/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/adoption.plist
    4 - Reboot your Mac
5 - Open Mac App Store
6 - Go to the Purchased pane and Accept the three iLife apps. Enter iTunes/MAS username/password if prompted.

  • Was a pleasant surprise to have iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand updated free

Not a question, more thinking out loud...I got a Macbook Pro at Christmas and when I read that the Mac App Store would be open on 7 January, I thought that my iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand would already be out of date. I was pleasantly surprised that the software update seemed to update these 3 automatically, so I'm now running the '11 versions. I thought I would have to pay for an upgrade if I wanted the newest versions!

Possibly...but I noticed that when the software update was occurring, it was updating one of either iMovie or iPhoto, so I assume all 3 were updated. Anyway it was nice - I'm used to having to pay for every program upgrade!

  • Using IMOVIE '08 to import from DV camera to 'BUSLINK' external hard drive( formatted for MAC ) but no success and kept getting this message: The import was canceled. You may not have permission to write to /Volumes/BUSLINK/iMovie Events.localized. Thanx

I finally got a representative that was able to help me, she had me go to Get Info, by right clicking iMovie from the finder, and I had to click on Sharing & Permissions>Everyone>Read & Write

    I have a pre-installed  OS-X Mountain Lion Mac book air(2012). I upgrade OS-X Mavericks.
After the upgrade i lost my iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand and so on ....
I checked my purchased from app store. But i can not see anything.
When I want to install from app store, it wants me to pay for them.
By the way I have no any backup for OS-X Mountain Lion.
How can I have these aplication on to OS-X Mavericks without paying?
Also, can I return back to OS-X Mountain Lion and How?

You should be able to install your iLife applications from the App Store. This Apple Knowledge Base article has the directions.
OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery
Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion  If you reinstall Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion installed, on an erased or replaced hard drive, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store. After installation, start from Lion.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to compete installation of your applications.

  • I thought that iMovie/iphoto/garageband were free but i received an email confirming that i bought these program. how can i get my money back?

thought that iMovie/iphoto/garageband were free but i received an email confirming that i bought these program. how can i get my money back?

The question is ... Did you buy them, accidentally or otherwise?   They are all part of iLife, the latest version of which is iLife 11.
iMovie/Garage band can all be bought through the App store as separate programs; iPhoto is a free update.

  • HT2305 I want to upgrade IMovie, IPhoto, Garageband and ITunes. My MacBookAir is one year old. But what are the prices for updates?

My MacBookAir is one year. I want to upgrade IMovie, IPhoto, Garageband and ITues, But What are the prices for these upgrades. How do I get around?

Actually, if you are updating the free iLife apps (iPhoto, iMovie & GarageBand) that came with your new Mac, the updates are free. Only if you are upgrading to newer major paid versions would you be charged.
    iTunes is always free, but is located in Apple Downloads, not the Mac App Store;
