Volume/muting

I installed a new sound card and also downloaded iTunes 7.1.1 at about the same time. Now when I play iTunes the sound goes away but the song is still playing. Occasionally I can hit pause and play and the sound comes back. Is anyone else having this problem? How did you fix it?

Phone was fine after the wipe cache partition until this Wednesday when it really had problems.  Lost sound a few times during the day, which is an issue when you are using Google Navigation to get to an unknown place and the directions just stop being announced but the screen is still working through the step by step stuff.
End result was I did a factory reset Wednesday night and have been ok at the 3 day mark.  Hope it continues to work.

  • How do I start up iMac with volume muted?

    I have a 21.5-inch, Late 2012, 3.1 GHz Intel Core i7, OS X 10.9.2 (13C64) and would like it to start up with the volume muted. I am NOT talking about the START-UP chime. I am talking about the Volume icon on the top of the screen showing no volume lines or Mute. Or System Preferences showing Mute. So, if I send an email there is no sound. If I play a song there is no sound. I want to have to turn on the volume to hear a sound after the computer starts.
    Is there a way I can make the computer start up in this state without muting the computer after it starts?
    I have tried going into System Preferences, Sound, Output and Sounds Effects, Mute. Not Muted on restart or logging out and back in.
    Any suggestions. Terminal command? Or is this not possible?
    Aloha

    I have muted it before shutting down and it starts up NOT muted. Doesn't work. Putting it to sleep could work except the USB ports stay active and that keeps other accessories active.
    Surely there is a better way? Come on this is an Apple. There must be a way. :=)

  • Volume Muted...Itunes won't play since upgrade

    I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion.
    Has anybody else had issues with the volume being muted.
    also
    Itune will not play any songs, just sits with the timer at 0
    has anybody resolved this?

    Environment: New MacBook Pro /w Retina (2012.09.04), Mac OS X 10.8
    Summary: When trying to play a song in iTunes, either as a local song or from another computers share, the song will never start eventhough the play indicator says its play (it will always be stuck on 0:00:00)
    Work Around:
         (Novice Users)
         From Spotlight search for "Airplay" which should provide results which includes the "System Preferences: Display". Click on this item.
         Near the bottom of the window, you will see the "Aiplay mirroring" which will most likely be set to "Off".
         Click on the word "Off" once, and the list will pop-down.
         Click on the world "Off" again and the list will close.
         You are now done and the issue is fixed.
         (Intermediate Users)
         Go to the Display settings in System Preferences
         Reselect your current setting. For me this meant just clicking on Off.
         Your done.

  • Master volume muting on playback

    Hi,
    Suddenly when my audio is playing past a certain point (going from one audio track to another separate one on the same audio track line) the master volume drops to the far left and I cannot hear any audio. For me to hear anything I have to drag the master volume back up to 0.0DB but if I click space bar to stop or start the track again the same thing happens and the master volume drops to the far left and no audio can be heard effectively muting it.
    PLEASE HELP. this is driving me wild as I can see no difference in setup from the audio segment playing a few seconds before on the time line to the next audio sitting along side from it (this is all on track line 1) yet this problem won't stop.
    Tks in advance.

    Yes, I did both, I followed the help files instructions step by step.

  • [SOLVED] - XFCE Start with volumed muted

    Hi! I have a issue that I can not resolve. I configure the keyboard multimedia keys (xf86raise,lower,muted). at first time I use alsa command described in arch wiki, then the first use and that every time I start xfce the volumed is setting to mute. I come back to wiki and remaped the keyboard shortcuts with pulse command, but issue continue.
    That is my setting editor in xfce: http://imgur.com/6BNAKAk

    I don't think it's an XFCE issue. I use KDE with alsa and pulseaudio and every time I reboot my volume is muted as well. I just unmute it with alsamixer every time, but it'd be cool to have a better solution.
    EDIT:
    After 15 seconds of googling, I found a solution.
    Set your volume to whatever you want it to be when you boot and use the command:
    alsactl store
    This will save your current configuration and it will be the default one every time you boot.
    Solution comes from this thread.

  • Ossvol - an oss volume/muting control script

    I recently had to switch to oss due to issues with alsa. My only problem with oss was an inability to incorporate it into my awesome configuration... even when i got it to display properly, I couldn't get it to mute (ossmix doesn't natively allow you to mute, how screwed up is that??). Hence, ossvol was born.
    Visit us here for more info!
    ossvol is also available via the AUR.
    usage: ossvol [option] [argument]
    Options:
    -i, --increase - increase volume by [argument]
    -d, --decrease - decrease volume by [argument]
    -t, --toggle - toggle mute on and off
    -h, --help - display help

    Well, I'll admit that I borrowed the about portion of the script (with a little modification) from your changevol script, although given that changevol is written in python, built for alsa, and intended to show a volume bar while ossvol is a bash script, built for oss, and intended to add mute functionality to oss while displaying nothing, I'd say that the similarities end there.

  • My Itouch (3rd generation) is making a fuzzy sound even with volume muted, music and apps won't play/work, and turns off completly at random times... Help!

    The same thing is happening to my sisters Itouch and we can't figure out whats wrong. Right now, I can't even get mine to turn on! Is it some kind of virus?  Anyone know whats happening and how to fix it, please help! Thank you so much!

    Oh, and I might have left it out in the sun (I don't know if that does anything) and it was acting funny before that but then got worse affter I left it out in the sun.

  • Why does Apple TV remote turn up LG TV volume?

    I got my new Apple TV today and have contacted telephone customer services about this problem, but they were stuck and now I have to wait up to five days for someone to get back to me after engineers have considered the issue...
    I have an LG42LPD 42-inch LCD TV and the Apple Remote, paired with the Apple TV because I have one also for the iMac and one for the MacBook Pro, turns up the TV volume whatever button I press - menu, forward, backward, plus, minus, select...
    I have discovered afterwards that ALL the Apple Remotes do this. I just usually don't have the TV on when the iMac or MacBook Pro are powered up and in use. So I never noticed before.
    No other TV function is affected by the Apple Remotes. Just the volume. But it's a huge problem in that I normally have the TV volume muted because sound goes through the home cinema amplifier. Until a fix is found - if a fix is found - I'm having to start a show in Apple TV, then leave the remote alone and just alter volume using my usual remote. If I pause, rewind or whatever on the Apple TV I risk the volume on the TV set going murderously high!
    While I'm waiting to see what comes back to me via email or phone over the next few days, does anyone else have any suggestions? Maybe how to change the Apple Remote frequencies so that they cease interfering with the LG TV? Many thanks!

    Well, I like using Apple TV but it's very buggy in my opinion. It's often unresponsive when I first try to use it after a period of inactivity, and has to be rebooted. Apple support promised to get back to me within 5 days - and that was back when I started this thread, but nobody has.
    I'm most dismayed that there is no simple 'off' button. It's bad enough that Sky has no off button on its set-top boxes, but as someone who is conscious of both environmental issues and saving money by not wasting electricity, I'm very disappointed. If I want to save power I have to unplug the device.
    I keep hoping for a new software version to improve some of the issues I've found with it but for now, Apple TV is a product that has great potential but lamentably poor implementation.
    Copeland: My TV doesn't have that option, unfortunately. You just have to have the volume on it set to zero because the sound passes through a home cinema system. if I could do that, disable TV sound completely, it would potentially be a solution. But thank you!

  • Setting Volume Keyboard Shortcuts

    How can I assign system wide up/down volume controls to Fn keys on a non-Apple keyboard?

    If you use alsa, try make bind to volume keys such script:
    $cat /usr/local/bin/volime-ctl
    #!/bin/sh
    MUTE="off"
    if [ 'X'$1 == 'Xmute' ]; then
    amixer -q set Master off
    MUTE="on"
    else
    LEVEL=`cat /proc/acpi/ibm/volume | awk '/^level:/ {print $2}'`
    VOLUME=`perl -e "printf (\"%2.0f\n\", $LEVEL/15*100);"`
    fi
    if [ $MUTE == 'on' ]; then
    INFO=MUTED
    ICON=audio-volume-muted
    else
    if [ $VOLUME -eq 0 ]; then
    ICON=audio-volume-off
    elif [ $VOLUME -lt 33 ]; then
    ICON=audio-volume-low
    elif [ $VOLUME -lt 66 ]; then
    ICON=audio-volume-medium
    else
    ICON=audio-volume-high
    fi
    VOLUME="${VOLUME}%"
    amixer -q sset Master $VOLUME on

    /usr/bin/notify-send --expire-time=2000 "Volume Control" "$VOLUME" -i $ICON

  • Fancy New Onscreen Volume Display for Openbox, et al

    I created a script for handling my volume control which uses the notify-osd package from AUR.  This is the newfangled notifications from Ubuntu.  It's nothing fancy so the notify-osd-bzr package will probably work fine as well.
    This is for alsa but with some minor mods it should work with oss.
    You can download the script here: http://mozicodo.s3.amazonaws.com/vol.sh
    The format for the command is: vol.sh {up|down|mute} [-i increment] [-m mixer]
    Increment is either a percent or number just like you would pass to amixer.  Defaults to 5%
    Mixer is the name of the control to change.  Defaults to Master
    For example to increase the volume of PCM by 10% you would do:
    vol.sh up -i 10% -m PCM
    Let me know of any suggestions for improvements.
    Edit: fixed the urls

    I have tested the script out, but yet I seem to be having issues with notify-osd displaying the stuff.
    What I get is this:
    It seems as if notify-osd isn't drawing anything but the bubble.  Has anyone had this issue with the script?  (Notify-osd works fine for all the other things I use it for, save for the fact that it doesn't seem to show icons for anything but Dropbox...maybe I'm missing the icon package for it?)
    Below are the notify-osd related packages I have installed:
    ┌─[lswest@Monster:~]-[16:57:11 on 09-07-13]
    └─> yaourt -Ss notify-osd|grep installed

    aur/notify-osd-bzr 311-1 [342-1 installed] (73)
    aur/pidgin-libnotify-notify-osd 0.14-3 [installed] (60)

  • My startup chime not muted anymore.

    I do not want to remove it but all of a sudden even though I have my volume muted when I shutdown it still chimes when I start up. I have added no software but I had a crash yesterday where the Mac told me I needed to shut it down. After startup I had a bluescreen crash. Since then I have reinstalled the latest 10.6.8 combo as well as repaired permissions.
    I have normal volume control.

    It's not one of life's necessities, no. It is an awesome sound though. It's a pick-me-up.
    I do find it curious that my old SE, SE30, IIci, LC475, Power Macintoshes 7500 and 8500, and PowerBook G3 always had the startup chime through the external speakers and this machine doesn't.

  • No Sound when Using HDMI from ATT DVR to TV

    I have a 52xv645u TV.  When I connect it to my ATT UVerse DVR using HDMI I get picture but no sound.  Using Composite everything works fine.  I've tried several HDMI cables.  If I use HDMI to my Surround Sound amp, I get both picture and sound (even with the amp volume muted).  The problem seems to be the connection between the DVR and the TV.  Does this TV support HDSC?  I believe that the DVR requires it to support it on the TV.
    I see that there is an upgrade for the firmware for this TV.  I have a Mac so the instructions don't work right.  I've downloaded the files to a flash drive but I am not sure if they are correct because there is no list of files available.  Does anyone know what files are needed so I can be sure that my flash drive has everything it needs?
    Any help with these problems would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Is there a list of things that are fixed in the update?   I can get sound and picture through component but I fear that it's not the same quality as it would be through HDMI.  But again, it's only when I watch TV without going through my surround sound amp.  I can watch TV through my apm and watch my Bluray DVDs through the amp and it goes via HDMI.

  • After upgrading to Mavericks (from 10.7.8), I get a popping sound on my speakers even with mute.  Suggestions?

    I've never had an issue with my sound on my MBP 15" 2011 model until I upgraded to Mavericks.  Shortly after I upgraded, I started getting a 'popping' sound coming from the speakers even with the volume muted.
    I'm trying to figure out what could be causing it by eliminating running programs but no luck yet.  So far I've tried:
    disabling graphic switching
    disabling the Flash plug in for Chrome
    Checking Voice over settings in accessibility (off)
    Killing coreaudiod
    So far, only killing coreaudiod has worked for any length of time.
    I'm not playing a sound, I have nothing in the background that's generating sound (with the exception of MS Office 2013 running in Parallels generating meeting notification alerts - that seems to cause part of it) but something is obviously triggering it.
    Thoughts?  Comments?  Suggestions?

    Might be corrupted audio preferences ..
    Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Type or copy paste the following;
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
    Click Go then move both .plist files from the Audio folder to the Trash.
    com.apple.audioDeviceSettings.pllist
    com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
    Restart your Mac. See if that made a difference ...
