Volume of midi notes

If I play a bunch of midi notes in a drum track, and I find that the volume is all over the place, is there a way to make them all the same volume?

No, GB doesn't have a feature like that. You can raise their velocity (not the same as volume) all by the same amount by selecting them all in the Editor window and using the velocity slider, but only until the loudest note hits the ceiling of 127.

My bad Eric. The startup preference recognizes the primary as a 10.8.3 startup volume but when u select it the system does not boot. I can only boot from my external backup drive

Recording 'Volume' with the midi notes??

Has anyone figured out how to get GB-09' to record:
-midi volume at the same time your playing the actual midi notes in? ( all at once )
+maybe expression pedal or volume pedal? or re-mapping sysex, or....

GB doesn't record volume changes in Real Time, it does, however record velocity (which may appear as volume changes, depending on the instrument)

Why are midi notes in piano roll lower volume when selected with pointer than when in playback?

I'm using Logic X on mac mini. When I select midi notes in piano roll with the pointer, they are at a lower volume than when in playback? I use Logic X on mac mini with Apogee Duet.

Thanks for your help Erik. I found the answer you posted about 30 minutes after posting my question. To me it doesn't answer my question 100%. The reason is that I can't expect to believe that every time someone records midi they have to go through all these extra steps to merge it (and it is not easy to do because they are hidden behind one another) in fact my problem was so unique that other logic users didn't understand why I am having this trouble. SO that brings me to my conclusion, that I have some setting that is keeping this from being a seamless operation and transforming it into a bunch of hoop jumps. Thoughts? Could it have to do with record settings of "merge"? I saw a few different settings there but none make sense to me.

Stubborn midi note volumes

I'm mixing a project combining live sound with some midi inputs. I don't usually do a lot with midi, but I've never had this problem before. Some of the notes boost the volume way up even though I turn the volume down on the track, even using automation volume settings. If I set it at say -7 it will spike the fader for the track up to +2.6 or whatever once it plays certain midi notes., then jump back down to what I tried to set it at before. Any ideas on how to tame these stubborn notes?

cool. you got me pointed in the right direction. What I wound up doing is going to the piano roll and clicking the "hyper draw" button in the lower left cornern (as shown on manual pg. 707 then from the drop down button select volume and basically deleted all those values.

How do I move cc 64 (sustain) data in sync when I move midi notes?

In the matrix editor, when I 'Select All Following' in order to move everything that follows back a few ticks to get rid of a rythmic hesitation, the sustain pedal data doesn't move with the notes. Obviously, this messes up the piano pedaling. Is there a way to 'attach' the controller info to the notes when I move them, or is there a better view window in which to this sort of editing? Thanks!

I was trying to figure this out myself and didn't understand the previous reply at first. But after a few seconds playing around I got it. If you open the midi matrix editor (in the 'windows' menu) you can select the notes you desire to move. After selecting the notes go to the event list (in the 'windows' menu). You should see the notes you've already selected in the event list highlighted in gray.
The items listed as 'control' are the sustain pedal controls in the midi information. (you can tweak these number values here as well). Holding the 'shift' key down, click all of the sustain pedal control items that you want to move. They should be within and/or around the already highlighted notes (the list is in order of sequence of the song). Once all is selected you can switch back to the matrix editor and drag the notes where you want them like normal, but you will also be moving the sustain information since you selected it in the event list.
Also, within the matrix editor itself you can use the view menu and navigate to the hyper draw option and choose sustain pedal. Now you can see the sustain controls under the midi notes and edit the length, etc. You can use the little arrow on the left to change what the hyper draw editing will change as well (volume, sustain pedal, etc.). First Midi Note Delay

If you select a software instrument track and play a few notes/chords before recording on that track you get the 1st note problem? What is your Preferences/Audio "I/O Buffer Size" set at?
Logic X does have considerably more overhead than Logic 9 but I don't think this is the problem.
For testing:

Locking midi controller expression data to midi note data. How to do it?

I am recording some sax and trumpet lines into Logic using Samplemodeling software (The Trumpet, The Sax Brothers). The data goes into Logic on a midi channel.
At the same time as playing the notes, I am using an expression pedal to control different aspects of the sound (cc64, but it could be set to anything midi controller number, as long as I also set it in the Samplemodeling software and make sure that Logic receives and Samplemodeling sends on the same midi channel).
The midi note data and midi data record properly. However, I am having a problem with editing. If I move the note in time (i.e. shift it left or right in piano roll), the cc64 data does not move with it. I can see the data, and of course, could cut and paste it or hyper draw it, but that would be very time consuming. Is there a way to lock the expression data to the note data so that when you move the note the midi controller data moves as well. I assume the same question would apply to pitch/volume/pan or any other controller, but I have not tried that.
Alternately, is there another way to record the data, so it is locked to the midi notes?

Well, I routed around in the manual and finally found the answer. There is a pull down menu which allows you to choose to tie together the non-note midi data to the note data.
"Turn on the Functions > Include Non-Note MIDI Events setting to tie other data (such as pitch-bend, modulation, aftertouch, or poly pressure) in a region to the region’s notes."

Can I Pan a single midi note

Is it possible to pan a single midi note in the matrix viewer in Logic? When I edit my midi data in the matrix I sometimes want to pan certain notes left or right but I can't figure out how to do it? This would especially helpful when editing drum loops so I can pan hi hat or certain sounds to certain positions.

to add to another post on this thread. if you are using the exs24 multi-channel insert you can assign different sound as aux channel inputs. this will allow you to pan your cymbals as you wish.
you can also use a multi-channel ultrabeat to do the same. next to the pan button for the instrument in ultrabeat you will see the word main. click on that and then you can assign an output for that specific sample.
from there you can go to an aux channel and assign the input of the aux to the ultrabeat or exs multi-channel output, and put effects, pans, volume and such.
very usefull.

Logic 8 : MAX output when highlighting sound in Midi notes window

Has anyone ran into this issue?
In Logic 8, when I highlight midi notes in the midi edit window (usually under mix window) what ever notes I grab bangs out at MAX volume, which as you can imagine, can cause some serious damage when one is mixing. Ever heard an 808 or 909 kick at MAX. My poor monitors actually start to bleed (red blood)...
Surely there is a way to set the highlighted midi notes output volume?

Are you saying that the volume when selected is louder than with the sequence playing? What is the velocity of the note set to in the event list? Do you perhaps have a playback parameter set in the inspector that is reducing the velocity of the track output on play back?

How to create a group of midi notes and...?

Hi, I was thinking about if it's possible to create for example a group of 32 nidi notes with a specific duration and a specific separation between them without painting them.
And then, I have a drum on the beat with its midi notes, now I want to have a sound wich midi note is off the beat at the first time but after a time it gets on the beat linearly, is it possible without painting the notes?Maybe with the transform window??

In my comment here, I described how to use the Hyper Editor to create multiple midi notes at once. That was for the purpose of creating a drum roll, but the method can also be used in other situations.

I'm not sure I understand, but I might. I think the easiest way to do this is to convert the midi to audio, and then use Flex to alter the length (i.e., tempo) of the region.

Midi notes or audio region do not play at the start of a bar?

I am having an issue with a midi loop I have created. If I let the song play a bit until it reaches the loop, logic works just as you'd expect it and everything plays correctly. But if I stop the song, or if I set the song into cycle mode so it repeats, the very first note of the midi loop is ignored, and not played.
So for example, if I set the cursor to start at bar 9, the starting point of the loop, the first midi note is not played. But if a set the cursor at bar 8 and let it play into bar 9 and the loop, all of the notes in the loop play correctly.
I found the following description of the same problem on another forum, but it seemed to suggest that there is no fix for this, which if true, seems kinda bad for a pro application. I was wondering if anyone knew of a workaround or fix to this, because its really annoying missing the notes, or having to expand the cycle region just to get all of the notes to play. Here is the text from the other forum:

Question: If a region starts at e.g. 1 1 1 1, and it starts playing from the same position, it seems that Logic misses the first few samples - which is especially noticeable with fast-attack transients.
Answer: Apparently Logic doesn't use some kind of pre-play buffering. The workaround is to have your entire song start e.g. one bar later, at 2 1 1 1, and let Logic play from 1 1 1 1. This workaround obviously doesn't work if you've set up a cycle - in which case Logic will miss the first samples when it starts playing as well. Next time it loops through the cycle it does play properly. There's no workaround for this - it's a serious shortcoming of the way Logic handles audio playback. With cycles, you could resort to using the Pause instead of the Play button/command: this will let you start playback from somewhere before the start of the cycle instead of starting at cycle-start (which is what Play does).

I'm having the same problem.
one workaround is to change the delay to +1/192=20 in the delay box in inspector on the given midi track...but this is a terrible thing to have to do over and over again.
PLEASE help if you know what's going on.....I ran logic on my macbook and this NEVER happened. I just bought a macbook pro 2.5 and it's apparently now an issue?
I have searched the net for fixes, and none work....logic does have a pre-play buffer, but it's range isnt large enough to buffer the instrument I'm using...which means the range is less than 1/192...come on....that's messed.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
