Volume of podcasts

Hi,
I'm creating some podcasts which are housed on my job's server. The volume on the podcasts is fine when I listen to them on my computer. When I access them through iTunes, the volume is so low I can barely hear the podcast. Why is this? I'm trying to make the files smaller as they're just huge-- would this affect how they're heard through iTunes? Please help-- I'm doing this for my job. I have no equipment and no training and I'm just at a loss!
Thank you!

iTunes has an option to adjust the volume of an audio file on import. It's in Preferences > Playback, the checkbox labeled "Sound Check". If you turn this on, and then import your podcast audio file it may adjust the level (you can see this in the Get Info window for the file: the Summary pane will show you a Volume level, and the Options pane shows a Volume Adjustment slider).
I think it's probably a good idea to import the file to iTunes for volume adjustment before uploading it - my understanding is that this volume adjustment is part of the metadata and will be honored when downloaded by other listeners.
Don't know your workflow, but if you are using an audio program (Audacity, GarageBand) to edit your podcast it would be good to run a Normalize filter over the file before exporting the compressed version for podcasting.

  • Increasing Volume of Podcast

I've been using GarageBand to create podcasts for several years now and am looking for a way to get the final MP3 levels to be hotter in my exported file.
In my workflow, I start by recording interviews with a Marantz PMD660 recorder at nice strong levels and then manage to keep those levels strong during editing. Although I suspect that at some point during export to iTunes, the levels are unilaterally lowered by GarageBand, I can't locate any settings that show where this can be adjusted.
The resulting files are fine, but always require the volume on playback to be set at almost half. I've noticed that the majority of commercial recordings are at levels that require playback volume to only be set at about one-third.
Am I missing something in the process? Here's a typical example of my rather basic podcast:

Have you checked the auto-normalize feature in GB's audio prefs? If yes, uncheck it and max out your volume using the master volume slider.

  • Volume Adjustment on ipod for podcasts

Up until reecently I could manuallly increase the volume of podcasts, and highlight all and adjust them all together. This no longer works. Help.

Thanks for your response. I just tried using it in the normal way and it sorted itself out. The volume turns up in XM now.
I'll put it down to a little glitch as I uploaded the MP3s this morning and so it's the first time I've used XM. Maybe it takes a few hours/attempts to have everything functioning.

  • Always "Determining Song Volume"

I've just updated to iTunes 7.3 and have noticed that it seems iTunes now Determines Song Volume for Podcasts as well as tracks? Maybe it did that before? ... But it sure has dragged to a crawl for the first time ever and is really focusing on determining the song volume of the podcasts that just downloaded. Long podcasts = big files = very slow.
I've shut off Sound Check in the preferences ... it still is Determining Song Value when I fire iTunes back up. It won't not do it ... unless I can quickly click the "x" button in the display window at the top of the app.
    Anyone else seein' this? Tips?

Ever since updating iTunes whenever I launch it all of my songs and podcasts go through 'determining song volume' EVERY TIME!! What is up with that?
I have deselected sound check...not sure if that will do the trick or not. But after reading the above post, I'm not hopeful.
As I type this the VERY SLOW song volume thing drags on.................

  • Can I split my itunes music library between and internal and external hard drive?

Is it possible to have music on the two different drives and still be able to make playlists from both drives to put on my ipod?  Here's my situation:  I'm using a Dell 32 bit computer running Vista Home Premium SP2 which I share with other users.  I have a large itunes library (40g+ of music only) that's starting to hog the hard disk space from other users. If possible, I would like to split off part of my itunes library to an external hard drive while still having access to the entire library for my ipod. Ideally I would like to have all my downloaded songs on both the internal and external drives so I'll have backups in case a drive fails, while putting all the music I have hard copies of solely on the external drive. Any help on how this can be done would be appreciated.

If you manually manage your itues library, you can store parts of it on an external drive, or on an internal drive.  Just keep in mind that in iTunes that you must set a default location for iTunes to manage it's files, and that will be the default location for iTunes to store anything it downloads.  You would need to manuay manage moving things from there if tht is not where you want them stored.
Perhaps a "better" solution would be for you to invest a little mone into 2 external drives.  One to hold your entire iTunes library, and the second to be your off-line backup of the first.  This is the method I have gone with and I like how it works for me.  My entire iTunes library is on an external (portable) 320GB drive.  Then, when iTunes is not running, I will clone my external drive onto a second drive I happen to have, this way if I have any failure of my primary drive, I lose at most about a weeks worth of content.  For me, I purchase little content during a week, but I do move a fairly large volume of podcasts.  With the entire library being on the external drive, if I ever have to swap to using my backup drive iTunes wil just think that it hasn't run and downloaded anything for a week, and all the "lost" content will be re-downloaded automatically.  This won't work for apps or purchased content, but for subscribed podcasts, it is great.

  • Can't turn up the volume on more than one podcast ITunes 11.1.1

This also happened in Itunes 11.1 but when I am in list view and select all podcasts to set the volume between 95 and 100 percent when I choose Get Info a message comes up, "Your selection contains more than one kind of media.  All items must be the same kind of order to view or edit them together."  I have maybe 1 or two video podcasts but mostly all of them are audio podcasts.  I'd like to be able to turn the sound up on all of them at one time like I used to.

Yes, it just took some time to build the waveforms for the second track. I went and got a snack, and when I came back from the kitchen the waveforms were there. Thanks!

  • Volume too low on 6300, and listening to podcasts

I believe this question has been asked so many times, but is there ANY way to make the allowable volume any higher on headsets? I'd like to listen to music while riding my bicycle and even the sound of the damn tires on the road is louder than the max volume settings.
Only workaround I found is to use a custom equalizer and bump up all frequency bands. Sound then kinda sucks.
Last, I tried listening to podcasts, but the audio playing interface is a joke: try fast forwarding into a 20 min podcast ... you can't! The fast forward button moves 6s forward every 2s. Oh that's fast! NOT!
I wonder how Nokia believes they can ever displace Apple's iPod if they can't even get the most BASIC function right. For frak's sake, my 30 year old cassette Walkman does fast forward right!
I'm FACEPALMing just thinking about those Nokia suits at the next marketing meeting, scheming on how they're going to take over the world of MP3 players and all that, but little do they know that their l33t engineers can't even do FF right!

Thanks for the suggestion JKramer. I should have been more clear about having adjusted all volumes up in the settings screen. Assuming all sound options are located within the "Settings --> Sound & Display" screen, then yes, I have tried changing them. I have also tried changing the option to "use incoming call volume for notifications" under the "ringer volume" settings, after reading that someone had success in improving volume that way.
This issue is not a problem all of the time. It is only an issue when there is an elevated level of background noise, such as driving on the freeway, or having music or a movie playing in the room.
The phone is otherwise excellent! I live and commute in areas of very spotty reception (with all cell providers), and this phone will keep calls and not even have voices garble where my past two phones have consistently dropped calls in at least five problem locations. So far, everything else about it seems to work great!
Maybe some of these phones don't have this issue. Or, maybe the people who say they don't encounter the problem are lucky enough to live in relatively quite environments most of the time. In a quiet house or office, it is certainly loud enough. It just needs to have the option for increased volume when in noisy places. The issue is that its "max volume" settings are not as loud as with other phones.
Searching for something like "Droid X volume" will indeed show many people experiencing these same problems on various forums...

  • Podcasts volume turned down...

I've uploaded several podcasts- they download fine to iTunes and appear to work- but when you try to watch/listen to them on the .mac page, the volume in the quicktime controls is turned all the way down. I spent a lot of time playing with my speakers before I realized that the volume control ON THE QT controls was there and it was turned all the way down. Turn it up, and all is well. Why would all of our podcasts be turned down? Is the a setting in iweb/.mac to turn them up globally? thanks

When you add the video to your podcast page (in iweb), you see the same controller bar with the little speaker on the left (it's QT volume control); you can set the volume there too.

  • Podcast volume

    Hi everyone
We're trying to record a podcast. We have a very good mic (Blue Snowball) but the volume is just way too low. How can we get a higher volume? We've already moved the two sliders: the track slider and the master slider.
    Thanks.
    Dan

try the input volume in sound section of system preferences, and the input volume in garage band. it's in the info panel to the right near where it says to record mono or stereo. by the way you should have mono as if you have stereo it will only come out on one side of the pan cutting the volume in half

  • Podcast Playback Volume

Have recently really got into Podcasts, great time killer to and from work...however on the whole whenever they play back, they are so quiet. So, for example, trying to listen to Sunday Supplement on the train or bus is impossible due to background noise.....even at full volume....
    Please help!!

If you right-click the podcast in itunes, and then select "Get Info", under "Options", you can adjust playback volume. Have you adjusted the volume here, coupled with the volume controls on the phone?

  • Adjusting volume on mulitiple podcasts iTunes 11.3

It seems like adjusting the volume on multiple podcasts has been fixed in iTunes 11.3 update because it goes faster but no it seems like podcasts aren't deleting 24 hours after because I just keep the most current podcasts for the week.  Is anyone else experiencing this?
I have one NHL hockey podcast which has a 7/1/2014 podcast as the latest but when turning up the volume on all podcasts it seems like its going back through the NHL hockey podcasts and every one since 2012.  Is there any way to stop this?  It really should just be saving one podcast.  I have Limit Episodes set to Most Recent and Delete Played episodes set to on.

  • Ipod won't play video/podcasts or audio only a black screen with the play symbol and volume/progress bar. games work fine! any ideas?

Ipod video classic 5th gen won't play video/podcasts or audio only a black screen with the play symbol and volume/progress bar. games work fine! any ideas?

    Here's some more info.
I tried installing the latest iTunes to my housemate's PC, logging into iTMS with my account, authorizing his machine to play my content, restoring my iPod to the factory settings, downloading the videos and copying them to my iPod.
It worked fine, and I can play my videos.
I have done the exact SAME thing on my own home PC twice, after completely uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and the Apple Software Updater. But I still can't get any videos downloaded on my home PC to play on my iPods.
    Any thoughts?

  • My volume won't work on some of my apps but works on podcasts and my music.  What is happening

When I use my apps like I funny and tapped out or want to watch video clips there is no sound, but I can listen to my music and podcasts without any problem. I have tried restarting my iPad several times and it still does not work.  Any suggestions?

Your system sounds may have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you are running iOS 5 or iOS 6, the system sound control is in the task bar at the bottom. Double tap the home button and swipe all the way to the right in the task bar to get to the speaker icon on the left side. Tap on that and the sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • HT5295 Unable to adjust volume via airplay in the podcast app

I'm not able to change the volume of the podcast in the app when playing through airplay on my apple tv. Do we need an app update?

Thanks for the response Eric.  I did previously try that hoping it would cure the problem.  I ran Disk Utility again and it came up with the same long list of issues.
It appeared that I successfully repaired all of them except the one relating to the SUID file warning.  I immediately verified the disk again, but the same list of issues were listed.
Interestingly, I did install a trial version of Parallels a few weeks ago.  I don't recall having these problems prior to that.  Last night, when my computer went into its altered state, Parallels was the only program that would successfully open.  I have since removed it using AppZapper.  We will wait and see.

  • Volume drop with 5c during Podcasts

I have a 5c and have noticed over the last few weeks that when I listen to podcasts with earphones after a few minutes the volume level drops by about half. It shows as still being at full volume on the controls so I can't put it up. And if I receive a text message whilst listening then the volume resets itself.
Anyone else had this problem or know what causes it?

Did you check the expression on the channel strip to see what it is set to? In many software instruments, expression controls the input level. Maybe expression is being sent by one of your knobs on your hardware accidentally, or you have some on screen object mapped to send expression. In the first case, you can check by leaving midi monitor open and spying on the input, to see if expression is being sent at any point...
