Volume Setting with USB-Soundsticks

Good Day.
I just plugged the USB-Soundstick into my MacBook Pro. It's working well, and it is possible to change the volume in the menu bar with the mouse.
The only thing is that, when I klick F3, F4 or F5 they only change the volume of the internal speakers. Thats where the 'Beep'-Sound appears as well.
Is it an programming error in OS X 10.4.8 or is it my personal settings?

Anyone having problems with USB Soundsticks on Mavericks?

My Harmon Karden USB Soundsticks just stopped being recognised by Mavericks after working fine since the initial upgade. Not sure what changed or when it did. I've tried deleting the sounds preferences and even rebooted into safe mode to clear the cache but they just don't get picked up any more. Anyone else see this problem or know of a solution?

Delete Pages 4.3. Open a Finder window, select Applications in the sidebar and delete the Pages app, so Pages 5.0 will always open.
Another option would be to move Pages 4.3 to an external drive. This is recommended, as the new version has got a lot of complaints about the lack of features of the new Pages version

Volume control with USB Audio device

Hello all.
I have just purchased a cheap USB audio device to connect my HiFi to my laptop with only one, neat USB lead and a USB hub - meaning I no longer need several USB wires and an audio cable across my desk.
This works fine, but I have just noticed that the volume control in OS X has no effect on the output now, only Mute or On. The volume within iTunes works fine, but not the OS X one.
Any way I can avoid having to use the volume on the hifi when using the USB Audio device?

ITunes with pdfs: books in a multi-volume set

I've started using iTunes to catalog all my pdf's. Most of them are books and many are multiple volume sets with one pdf per volume. I've been using Disk # for volume number and sort by Title/Disk #. This method takes care of sorting, but what I would like to see is a way to just see the set title one time in the list view and expand it with a click. Depending on the number of volumes, one set can take up more than one page in he list view.
If this is possible?

i do this with my textbooks. I see what you wanting to do, and i couldn't find a way to do it within iTunes. so what i did is i created multipage PDF's and then imported those multipage pdf's into iTunes. so now instead of having each page imported i have them imported by chapters.
then when i sync it to my iPad i move them into their own catagory within iBook titled "The Cell: A molecular approach"

More finegrained audio volume control? (Harman/Kardon USB SoundSticks)

I've been asking this question for every major release since 10.2 and I am near to just give up on it. I use the Harman/Kardon SoundSticks (the older USB model, not version 2 with the regular audio jack) and since 10.2 they are simply too loud. Since the speakers themselves do not have any volume control knob it has to be a software solution.
With OS X's sound volume keys I can only use "1 bar of volume" when in front of my Mac and even that is too loud. The only solution is to turn it off completely or to lower it a little bit via the volume control slider in the menu bar. This results in approximately "3/4 bar of volume". Moving it just a tiny bit down from here results in muted audio.
Is there any way to just reduce the overall audio volume via software? Sure, I can do it app by app, but I really need a systemwide solution!

Then maybe you're really lucky or just like the high volume setting. This problem exists for years now and it's definitely not caused by my hardware/software. It was the same with the following Macs:
- Power Mac G4
- iBook G3
- iBook G4
- Power Mac G4 Cube
- PowerBook G4 Ti
- PowerBook G4 Alu
- MacBook Pro CD
- MacBook Pro C2D
And it happened on all releases of OS X from 10.2 up to 10.5. All versions were installed clean without upgrading so I really have reason to believe it's Apple's sound driver for the SoundSticks...

Voice memo volume very low, it played normally then today very low even with volume set full blast.

I played my voice memos yesterday and the volume was fine. Today I can bearly hear them. I have the volume set to the highest with the buttons on the side. Any thoughts?

I'd like you to take a look a the follow support article, specifically starting at step 5:
Verify that the volume is set to a level you would normally be able to hear.
Ensure that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack or the dock connector.
If the iPhone is in a protective case, make sure that the speaker port isn't blocked by the case.
Make sure that the speaker and dock port aren't clogged with debris. If necessary, clean it with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush. Carefully and gently brush away any debris.
If an audio issue occurs when using a specific application, try testing other applications to see if the issue persists.
If the iPhone is paired with a Bluetooth headset or car kit:
Try turning off Bluetooth.
If you experience difficulties with the Bluetooth feature, follow these troubleshooting steps.
Restart the iPhone.
If restarting doesn't fix the issue, ensure that your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS.
If the issue is not resolved, please contact Apple Support.

No way without a computer in the middle. You will need the Soundsticks II with minijack interface.

Harman Kardon USB Soundsticks (1st Gen) Screeching/Static

After upgrading to 10.6/10.6.1, I now get periodic, short screeches/static on my USB Harman Kardon Soundsticks (the USB-only version), regardless of the source of sound. So playing music is definitely now intolerable.
Anyone else experiencing USB sound related issues?
This is the last straw for me in using USB-based speakers as I've they always "disconnected" and were no longer accessible when performing large file transfers with USB drives. Only a restart would make them accessible again. With this new issue in Snow Leopard, I'm ditching them for mini-plug based speakers.

Don't give up +so fast+. I'm trying to find a way to lower the USB SoundSticks' volume for years now without luck. But other than that, they still work fine with 10.6.1 over here!
I know of the static noise problem, but I only had that years ago with 10.3 and/or 10.4 and it was caused by my USB hub. Connecting them directly to my Mac worked fine and since using the following setup I never had a problem:

Finer sound volume setting?

Hi everyone,
I'm finally annoyed to a level where I turn to you. For years I used my Harman/Kardon Sound Sticks (the older ones with USB) with several PPC-Macs and today with my MacBook Pro. Ever since switching to OS X my Sound Sticks were a lot louder than under OS 9 back in the days and I finally want to change that! In OS X the sound volume I get with just 1 bar equals several bars in OS 9...
Since these older USB-speakers do not have volume controls builtin I'm in need of a software solution: I need a finer control over their volume since even 1 bar of system sound volume (via keyboard) is too loud. I know that you can get lower volume by using the mouse and the volume fader in System Preferences, but even the lowest possible setting before absolute silence kicks in is too loud for me.
Plist editing and other "experienced" user stuff is extremely welcome...

I'm sorry I don't have a solution for you. I agree it is annoying, as I too experience this problem when using headphones/earphones. I have to adjust the volume output of each application accordingly.

Default Volume Setting??

I posted this message a couple weeks ago over in the Tiger forum yet no response. I think it really belongs over there since this problem is observed on all my Intel Tiger versions and on none of my PPC Tiger versions. Oh well, here it is...
I have six macs all running the latest version of Tiger.
Three G3 and G4 Macs and three duo core intel Macs. One MacBook and two Minis.
The three duo core machines are all nearly brand new - about a week old. It seems that no matter where I set the system volume control, after a reboot, the volume reverts to a default setting just over the half way point.
However, all three PPC Macs will always "remember" the preferred volume setting after any and all reboots.
This seems like a flaw in the Intel version of Tiger since only the three brand new Intel machines behave this way.
Yes, I've repaired permissions.
This is important to me since all the machines share a single set of speakers through a KVM. To set the volume to my liking and have it stay there would be nice.

I think an issue tied into this topic is the fact that the way Intel based boards initialize during boot-up is different. Also, each model will have a slightly different BIOS/CMOS.
Most likely the Macs with Intel-based boards do not have a BIOS that supports "boot sounds" via the external jack (or Apple has not yet enabled this feature for one reason or another).
On my mini, part way through the start up process, I can hear a faint pop from my external speakers. It's my guess this is when the audio driver is finally loaded.
The G4 Cubes have audio oddities of a similar nature due to the fact that all their sound must be sent over USB. In that case, Apple created a special routine that would load the audio elements as soon as possible, otherwise those users would have had no start up sound at all.
As far as the MacBook and volume level goes (and he was a bit non-committal on the response, imo ) it's quite possible that a) their particular BIOS has been updated/fixed to support saving the volume level between reboots, or b) the version of OS X running on those MacBooks is a special revision that has a fix in itself - if they are indeed storing this setting.
A third possibility is that the volume level IS being saved but only for internal speakers (which the MacBook has).

FCE sends sound to integrated audio instead of USB soundsticks

Hi All,
I am working on my first project with FCE, and I was going to start on the audio part... except that I could't hear any sound! After some testing, it appears that FCE is sending sound to the integrated audio, even though I have the system preferences set up to use USB Soundsticks. So now I can hear the sound (after increasing the sound level on the integrated audio), but it sounds very different from the Soundsticks and I would much prefer to use them. Any idea how I can do this?

Mini audio stereo 1/8" is okay to output sound.
I think there was 2 version of SoundStick, one USB and one with audio 1/8".
But to use a USB audio device, may be you can try an audio routing utility:

The reason is because my iPhone 3Gs wifi having some problem. So i have to use a USB cable to connect to my computer and let my iphone to connect to the internet .
If i don't do this i would have to keep on running out & in to my room & my living room.
My iPhone 3Gs allows to connect to the wifi when i am in my living room, but once i enter my room the wifi won't be able any more. So please help me out please people

I believe the next time you sync your phone to itune via the cord, you will have to check the box that says sync via wifi and also enable that setting on your iphone.

4s Hotspot tethering only works with USB and BT but not with wifi

XP sp3 - iPhone 4s with ios 5.0.1 - on Three one plan
Tethering with wifi works to a friends Samsung phone, wifi on the pc confirmed working with the apple store wifi, tethering with USB and BT works with good connection speeds on my laptop but when i try to tether with wifi it connects to the laptop at 54mbps and all appears well, even claims to have received a small amount of data packets, but no data comes to any browser. The iPhone reports 1 connection to the hotspot and stays connected with a non-pulsing blue bar after the first minute.

I've deleted my firewall (zone alarm) completely and turned off windows firewall to go naked surfing for a second even though they don't cause a problem with USB tethering, makes no difference

rebooted many times
reinstalled itunes (latest)

This is causing me a nightmare. I've been through everything i can find online, been to the Apple store genius bar (genius appeared to have sub zero knowledge / interest as it involved a MS machine), been to a Three shop (legally not allowed to touch my PC apparently) and been to a Sony shop (laptop make, not their fault if my iphone doesn't work). All very frustrating.
Please help if you can! Any suggestion will be tried unless it involves sledge hammers or lakes, and only then for a few more days at most.

Turned off bluetooth on phone, turned off hotspot and on again, phone asked if i wanted to turn on bluetooth or go with USB and wifi only, said usb/wifi only. Still nothing. Rebooted PC and iphone. Turned on hotspot, pc seemlessly connects to network, still no data comes.
One odd thing is zone alarm asks me to "select a security zone for the wireless network at ip address: *******.0" every time and doesn't seem to remember the setting over sessions. When i get the status of the connection the ip address is *****.2 and default gateway is same ********.1 Not sure if that's anything.
Also getting a javascript error about an undefinded component (trustcheckermozilla) since i updated zonealarm but as i said even completely uninstalling zonealarm made no difference. I'll update firefox as well but tried with IE and still no data.

How can I stop iTunes from dropping my iPhone 5 when connected with USB cable? It sees it and start a backup and then it drops and tells me cannot find phone.

My HP notebook 64 bit Windows 8 after the last iTunes update will detect my iPhone 5, sync and when finished with thy sync I start a backup to my computer. It runs fine for a bit and then gives me message I have changed settings on my iPhone 5 and asked me if I want to update. I OK the question and runs a bit more and then drops the connection telling me cant find my iPhone 5. I can restart iTunes and start over and does the same thing.
ITunes update 11.1.1.62 had difficulties with the updates on 64 bit Windows 7 and 8.1 causing an error on boot other trouble. I found solution on research that insturcted to Remove iTunes, Bonjour, Apple Support and Apple Update and reload iTunes old version. I simply reloaded the new version becasue did not have the old version of iTunes. I have been working fine with the old version. I know problem is a simple setting somewhere but it is NOT SIMPLE to me since I dont know where the find the simple setting.

My apologies...the version is 11.1.4.62 not as stated aboive in my problem description. I'm trying again and it just finished syncing fine and my iPhone 5 is still connected to iTuns physcially with USB lightening cable and is displaying the iPhone icon top right. I clicked on it and iTunes is now "hung' or locked up. Shows to be an active running application but can't get back to it so willl have to kill with task manager. There is some kind of problem going on with the latest version of iTunes and Wndows 7 and 8.1 or something. My iPhone 5 now has a new feature that it is now asking me if I "Trust" this computer. iTunes just came "unhung" after several minutes while I was typing this. Now I am going to start the backup to this computer HP Winsows 8.1 and iTune 11.1.4.62 and see what happens. Says it is Backing up Jerrys iPhone but the Barber Pole progress bar is not turning an iTunes is hung again and I cant get back to it from this page I am typing on. Maybe it will eventually release as it did a moment ago.
