Volume & Soundcheck Problems
Hi,
I have two problems with my iPod nano:
1) Soundcheck -
When I use this, all the songs are played at such a low level, it's really hard to hear them. (My iPod is usually used with speakers at home or in the car.)
2) Volume Limit -
Unfortunately the few ruin it for the many. Again, I have to have my iPod's volume full blast as well as my speakers to have it to a decent listening level. (I live in a town home, and by "decent" I mean that I can hear it - not my neighbours.) I've tried different settings to no avail.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
iBook G4 (His name is Walter.) Mac OS X (10.4.5)
1) This can be an effect of sound check. If some songs are rather soft, this can happen. Use it if you like it. You can also adjust song volumes in iTunes (Right click the song and go to get info. Click the options tab. Adjust the volume. Click OK).
2) The Volume Limit does not have to be on. The iPod gets just as loud as it used to. If a volume limit is set, this article contains steps to remove it...
Setting the maximum volume limit on iPod
Also...
The iPod is not as loud if you connect it to speaker-type devices through the headphone port. You will need to turn the volume up.
A good option would be The iPod nano dock or Apple Universal Dock. Both of these work with the iPod nano and have a line out port. This line out port as better quality and louder sound.
From what we know at this point, your iPod does not need service as a previous poster had said.

My I phone 4 have volume control problem did anybody know how to fix thankyou
Try force closing the Photos and Maps apps, then resetting your phone: double-tap the home button, locate Photos in the list at the bottom, tap and hold it until it wiggles, tap to close it. Now locate Maps and tap to close it as well, finish by tapping the home button. Now reset your phone: hold the on/off and home buttons until your see the Apple logo (ignoring the off slider that appears first), then release. See if that clears things up.

Laptop volume permissions problem
...got a shiny new MacBook Pro to use when I'm away from the desktop.
...used Migration Assistant to duplicate my account on it.
Now, when I connect to my laptop's account from my MacPro, I get privilege warnings and can't write files. I did an ls -l and see that, while the mount point belongs to me, all the directories under it belong to "tempuser" - - anyone have any idea why this is happening and what I can do about it?Thanks again macwiz. Unfortunately none of these options are working and I've been reduced to syncing machines via thumb drive (ugh).
I did try to mount the MacPro on the MacBook (i.e. the other way around) and got the same permissions issues although the directories belonged to "user" in this case rather than "tempuser."
The odd thing is, at one point in time, I thought this was working but somewhere along the line it developed this problem. Odder still, I can mount either machine's volume without problems on my old G4 laptop running Tiger. All the directories show up as being owned by the logged-in account on that machine.
Is it possible the problem is due to the users on the two machines having the same name? -
Another volume control problem after installing new software
I'm having a different volume control problem than the previous poster.
When I turn my ipod touch on, the volume control stays on the screen. I can't do anything to get rid of it. When I go into settings/sounds, the control goes away on the screen, but it will not let me turn the volume up. When I try to listen to music through my headphones, I can turn the volume up but then it automatically turns itself down. The same thing happens when I try to turn the volume up from the side control. It worked fine this morning before I installed the new software and now it's acting buggy. Any ideas on how to fix this?Friend should do an update again your team blackberry.

Mirrored volumes pathing problems
mirrored volumes pathing problems
I am running Windows 2008 Server Datacenter.
I created some mirrored volumes with disk administrator.
These disk are in a fibre channel fabric.
All paths go down so disk administrator losses the disks.
All paths come up and disk administrator recovers the disks.
The mirrors all show as failed.
There are disks that show as failed, and disks that show as foreign.
When I import the foreign disks.
One of the mirrored volume starts resyncing, and the other mirrored volume comes up as 2 simple volumes.
Both mirrored volumes were in sync when the paths went down.
So I expected them to come back up as mirrored volumes when the paths come back up.
There is no I/O running at the time of the path failures. So let me see if I understand correctly.
2 volumes presented to 2008 Datacenter via fibre channel
Volumes are then mirrored via windows
Disks drop off line and then the second mirror is 2 simple volumes but the first is rebuilding.
So question 1 - Is it for read performance that the disks are mirrored?
Question 2 - what disk errors appear in the event log when this happens
Question 3 - whats the HBA used in the server
Question 4 - Whats the backend staorage
Question 5 - Is MPIO being used?
Do we know the reason that the paths became unavailable? That would be probably my biggest concern.
Also when the simple volumes came back up was the data available?

Help please! - Hard disk Volume Header problems and 'Beach Ball' hangs
Hi all
I was wondering if anyone can help me out with my hard drive problems. Until recently, everything was going fine with my Powerbook after upgrading to 10.4.2. Then all of a sudden, one day, at the login screen I got a beach ball hang which lasted around 4 minutes. When the dock is launched, I get another beach ball hang for an additional 3 or 4 minutes.
When it finally finishes logging in everything is fine, I can access all my files and do whatever I want to do at full speed, that is, until an app asks me for my administrators password which welcomes back the beach ball and a system hang for another 3-4 minutes or so.
Disk Utility says that I have minor Volume header problems but will not fix it as it abruptly quits before it finishes diagnosing the drive.
I have Disk Warrior 3.0.3 and have tried to use it but when I boot off the CD it does not recognise my hard drive for fixing puroposes but still displays the hard drive in the Hardware tab.
The SMART status of the drive is verified and there doesnt seem to be any problems in that respect.
I have repaired permissions, ran all the processes in Onyx and still no joy.
Finally, I have tried to use TechTool Pro but on a surface disk check it fails halfway through after shifting a few bad sectors around.
Everything seems to be fine if you ignore all these beach ball hangs but I'm worried about a very imminent hard drive fail. I am now in the process of zeroing all the empty spaces on my hard disk to see if the badsector problems can be fixed in this way.
When the beach ball appears I can hear the hard disk making a scraping sound if this helps at all.
Please help me! Its driving me nuts! I am also currently working abroad hence I don't have my Mac OS X Tiger install disks on me otherwise I'd just do an archive and reinstall.
Is this a physical problem? Volume header problem? I'm so confused!
Any help greatly appreciated! Many thanks...It sounds as if you've attempted the appropriate fixes for your drive... Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro and Onyx. If none of these utilities have repaired the problem then perhaps there is a hardware failure of some sort... perhaps a head crash has done some physical damage.
How old is this hard drive? Is it the original?
It's unfortunate that you don't have your Tiger install discs as a reinstall of the OS might relieve the problem. But I doubt it since, as you say, "the disc makes a scraping sound". That suggests to me the problem may be physical damage or wear of the hard drive.
If I were in your shoes, I would backup any critical files now, before the drive fails completely.
I'd replace the drive, and probably buy an external enclosure (USB or Firewire) for the old drive to allow for data retrieval until it failed.
Unfortunately, replacing the drive will require your software install discs... =( ... can't help you there.

New MBP 15" Weird Freezing & Disk (Volume Header) Problems, related?
Hi all
I hope someone can help me, and I hope I don't have a faulty Mac!
I bought a 15" MBP a week ago and while it's awesome, I have a problem where the system will completely freeze, except for the mouse cursor.
Nothing on the keyboard works, force quit doesn't come up, plugging in / removing the power supply doesn't change the battery icon, there's no spinning beach ball. Literally the whole system is unresponsive except for the mouse cursor which seems to be moving fine. None of the hardware controls work either, i.e. eject button
The only consistency that I can think of is that of all the times that it has happened, Firefox was open (ver. 2.0.0.2), except once where Firefox had just started (it froze with Firefox darkened in the dock)
Since then I've reinstalled Firefox but I have another problem and wonder if they're related.
Fresh out of the box I tried to install Windows through Boot Camp but when Boot Camp tried to partition my disk it gave me an error and referred me to Disk Utilities. Disk Utilities gave me a "Volume Header needs minor repair" error, so I fixed it from an older Mac that I have with the MBP mounted in disk mode.
This fixed it, Boot Camp then installed fine, I managed to get myself a virus so I deleted the Windows partition through Boot Camp and tried to partition the disk again with the intent of installing Windows and not get a virus this time
However, Boot Camp gave me the same "Volume Header needs minor repair" error!
The consistency of these errors is making me concerned about the quality of the hdd that's in my MBP!
Some info you might need to know about my MBP

Volume control problems in vista on MBP
Hi,
My Brightness and Backlight keys are working fine but I can't seem to change the volume using my remote or my keyboard volume buttons. The overlay comes up but theres a "no symbol (circle with line through it)" underneath the volume bar. Any ideas how I can fix this? (I can still chnge volume in windows, perhaps its a conflict with the windows driver in SP1)
I'm running a MacBook Pro 2007, and Vista Ultimate 32-bit SP1 (just installed SP1, could have caused the problem).I am having the same issue. Everything worked fine until the last week or so. I recently installed Vista SP1. Are you running Vista with SP1?

IMac btree or volume structure problem?
When I turn on my 8 year old iMac I get a gray screen with the Apple logo and a narrow horizontal bar just above the logo. I tried doing a Safe Boot, but after a few minutes it restarts itself. I started it up from various CDs that came with it, and these are the results:
Apple Hardware Test CD shows no hardware problems.
OS 9.1 CD got me to the System 9 desktop. I ran Disk First Aid from the CD. The last item it checked was catalog BTree. Right after that it said unable to read from disk. I was able to copy items from the System 9 desktop to my laptop. But when I opened the Users folder on the HD to copy items from the OS X side, all I found were .localized documents. I was hoping to get to my pictures.
OS 10.0.3 CD Disk Utility - First Aid said "Reserved fields in the catalog record have incorrect data. Keys out of order." When I click Repair, it does not fix the problem.
I then downloaded Tech Tool Deluxe for Power PC and started up from that CD. It says Volume Structure failed. If I choose to rebuild, it will make some drastic changes to the original directory data, such as total files going from 193,111 to 8,595 and volume content size going from 18.6 GB to 12.1 GB. I was afraid I might lose something important, so I did not do the rebuild.
I feel like I might be in over my head. Should I take it to the Apple Store and let them deal with it? Any ideas about how to get to my pictures so I can copy them onto my laptop?
Thanks!
April+Keys out of order+, in my experience and others here, can only be repaired with the following utility and only if it's not too far gone. It repaired that issue for me.
If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair. I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy. Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
TechTool is just not a robust enough repair utility to fix your very serious directory corruption.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand.
If you have a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install will also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
Cheers! DALE
p.s. Here's a rewiew of DiskWarrior 4. -
IPhone Volume Control Problems
The volume control rocker switch on the side of the phone seems to have a problem. The slightest touch to the 'down' side and volume goes to zero. I even have times where I am depressing the 'up' side but not actually increasing volume because the untouched down side is decreasing volume. Has anyone experienced this before? Do you have any suggestions on how to resolve?
Try a hard reset and restore. If neither help, contact Apple and get it serviced.

Hard Reset: Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down simultaneously at least 6 seconds (don't use red slider) until the unit shuts off. Then restart.

Hi,
Please can anyone help?
The volume keys on the right side of my Nokia N8 are not responding so I can't alter the volume when playing Angry Birds Lite.
Also, the only way the ringer volume can be adjusted is by accessing phone setting and using the touchscreen.
However, the volume keys seem to work in camera mode for adjusting zoom.
This is my third Nokia N8:
1st - Dead battery issue
2nd - Stuck green cluster of pixels
3rd - Volume control?
If this is another hardware problem my Nokia N8 is being exchanged for a proper phone.

Dbus/hal/gnome-volume-manager problem
I've got hal and dbus running but it doesnt even seem that gnome-volume-manager is started. I added it to my gnome session but that didnt seem to do the trick. I'm trying to be able to just plug in my usb key and ipod and have them automount. It works if I restart hal or run gnome-volume-manager from the command line but then work work again unless I restart that stuff again. Here is a cut from my fstab:
/dev/sda1 /mnt/usb auto user,noauto 0 0
/dev/sda2 /mnt/ipod auto user,noauto 0 0Hi lhoerste,
I had this problem with automount as well. The way I fixed it was adding
dbus hal to daemons line in /etc/rc.conf. You probably did this already.
Next, when you are in the gnome desktop, stick in a cd. Nothing happens right?
Now go to preferences=>removable drives and media (I think this is what it is called. I'm not sitting infront of my computer at the moment). Then make sure that the checkboxes pertaining to "mount automatically" are checked.
Close window.
Now your cd should automount and appear on the desktop. Eject the cd by right clicking on the icon and choosing eject.
Now, restart and ***make sure you save settings*** before leaving.
Get back into the gnome desktop and plug your cd back in. It should automount now.
This is how I got automount to work for me. -
Satellite L40-17R - FN Sound Volume Hotkey problem - Windows XP
Hi,
I've recently bought Satellite L40-17R (PSL4CE) without OS preinstalled. I've installed Windows XP Home Edition SP 2.
Then I have installed all drivers I have found for this model on Toshiba driver site. I've even upgraded BIOS.
After that all Fn hotkeys works fine *except those responsible for volume control (Fn + Up/Down Arrow, Esc)*.
I have searched the forum for solution of this problem and found this topic
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=113113
but I am unable to install +ATK Hotkey Utility+ and +ATK Hotkey Driver+ since I cannot find *Driver Package* at Toshiba driver site:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=EU
as if it was removed.
I also studied instructions from
http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-files2/0/install-20071214121932.zip
Driver Package is also mentioned there on page 7, 8, 9 but it does not appear in a +Driver type+ listbox as described.
Also when I don't specify "Driver type" field in the search form there is no any Driver Package in search result.
Can anybody tell me where to find Driver Package, ATK Hotkey Utility or ATK Hotkey Driver for Satellite L40+ Win XP?
Am I missing something? Is my Toshiba drivers link not up to date? Is there any other solution to make sound hotkeys work?
MaoI've tried Ubuntu Linux on L40-17R and it can control the brightness automatically. For example, when u plug out the AC power (i.e. switch to battery) the brightness goes down to certain level automatically. And It can maintain the brightness level after rebooting.
I cannot find the same feature in Windows XP.
I think this is due to the missing of power saver utility. It can control the brightness automatically. and also for all other options. -
Volume Drop Problem (changes depending on how held)
The speaker volume on my iPhone changes depending on how it's being held. I surely hope this isn't considered a "feature". Held at a diagonal angle tilted backward, the volume drops considerably. It seems to play normal only when fully flat, or vertical.
Anyone else have this problem also? I'm considering exchanging it for another.Don't you think it might just be a little useful to know what normally happens? I mean, you do realize that some phones sound silent when you tilt them a mm, while other phones sound almost the same no matter where you hold them. You do get that the difference in volume for the iPhone speakerphone when placed on a solid surface is much more dramatic than the changes in volume most other phones have due to placement, thus it's not something everybody thinks of right away.
Nobody tried to tell you that the sound waves were effected by gravity and the phone would be louder if you held it over your head right?
Read the first post again and think about it; 'speaker' refers to any sound emitting device like the 'headset', 'earpiece', or 'speakerphone speaker'...which you might even call the 'speaker speaker' or just 'speaker', regardless of how you define the parts; other people toss around the terms as if they are interchangeable. The post just says speaker.
If you are so bright then why are you asking a question at all? You know that if you move your body and the phone at the same time the volume shouldn't change. I mean..sure gravity does make the soundwaves drop quicker and all that so when you walk up an angled driveway the phone needs to adjust the volume, but that's only a little bit...not 'considerably' right?
Let's think for a second (or less for some of us). First, 'I was concerned some engineer mightve mistakenly thought of this as some cockamami "feature"'. Know what? It's a good idea. I wouldn't half mind a phone that could adjust the volume when I moved it to or from my ear or body. Seamlessly changing from the EARPIECE to the SPEAKER would be a great thing too. Things like switching from the bluetooth HEADSET to the SPEAKER are nice touches. I think you have an advanced model or a special feature.
It's also a little difficult for people to know how much your phone changes in volume when they can't hear it. It's not like there's a recording or some empirical data like 'hey, when I tilt my phone at a 45 degree angle it drops 20 decibels'.
As to 'reflected acoustics?!?!', I think the post starts with "speaker volume" and continues to 'when fully flat, or vertical'. Fully flat sounds like your phone is sitting on a table, shelf, or the floor and since I don't put my phone on a block then lay down on the floor with my ear above it to make a call I think the description sounds more like the speakerphone portion than the ear 'speaker'. Stating what the SPEAKER should do when normally performing in answer to a question should be considered informative and useful because : If you knew what the speaker was supposed to do you would not have asked.
Yeah, you never know who is using an iPhone or posting in the forums, but it doesn't take very long to read through the posts and find the information you want when you post a clear question in the first place.
I don't consider my phone a derogatory TLA, but if that's what you think of the product then I hope you enjoy your old phone.
Don't let the bass fall on your foot on the way out. -
Volume control problem in Lion
MBP 13" mid 2010 (7.1) just installed a fresh copy of Lion. After reboot volume control does not work (audio device - which is internal speakers - has no controls), but there is sound. After inserting headphones the volume control starts working, and remains functional after removing the headphones.
Basically after each reboot I have to temporary plug headphones to get volume control working. Nothing in dmesg or system.log
I'm familiar with linux so if you tell me how to debug this I'll happily do it, not afraid at all of command line or searching through logs.
(and you'd think that having control both over hardware and software would prevent such frustrating problems)It looks more like a race condition or uninitialized variable in the kernel sound driver. That's not good since it may not affect too many people and may not be easy to reproduce by the developers (if it makes it onto apple's bug list)
One day it happened after every restart, for at least 5 restarts.
The other day it happened only after shutdown/poweron.
So I don't think the pram reset is more then a coincidence.
Only good think is you don't need to reboot often, sleep (standby) works just fine and the battery drain is minimal.
