Volumes keys showing "broken icon" symbol on MBP

I am having volume issues on my 2011 MPB running Lion.  When I start my computer it makes the start up noise, and I am also running Windows 7 with BootCamp, and the volume works there.
On my Mac side however, I am getting a broken icon symbol when I hit the volume buttons, and I also cannot control volume throung the pull dowm bar on the upper portion of the screen.  No volume is working.
I have done all my updates, and I have reset my PRAM (which was only a temporary fix).
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Under out output device it says "Digital Output" and has a check mark beside it.  This is the only option.  Under input device it says "internal microphone" and "line in", and internal microphone is checked.
It is a 15''.

  • Ipad mini. no sound. volume control shows headphone icon. no headphone attached

Hi, I am having trouble getting any sound out of my mini, which is on IOS 7. The volume buttons show the headphone icon but there is no headphone attached. What do I need to do to get back to normsal? I cannot see any setting?
I have had my mini for a year with no problems.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

  • Raw Files show Broken Box Symbol in PSE 6

I was on here over a year ago and employed a work around for the broken box symbol that I get on some of my Raw files in PSE6.  Lately the work around is not working.  The question that I have is did Adobe fix the problem in PSE7 or PSE8 rather than some of the users helping each other out with the work arounds?  I would purchase 7 or 8 just to be rid of this annoying bug.......Rob

Before you spend the money on the upgrade to 7 or 8, you might try the following:
    1. Delete the thumbnail cache file "thumb.5.cache" as described here:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Recreate_Organizer_thum bnails
    2. Try solution 2 of the tech note:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/403/kb403728.html
If this works, then go back and try solution 3 one more time.
If you do decide to upgrade, I suggest waiting a couple of weeks if you can before deciding on 7 versus 8 -- the initial feedback on 8 isn't looking very good.

  • Since my update, I can't adjust the volume from my keyboard...the volume keys have a locked symbol that shows when I press them.  I checked System preferences but can't find a way to get the lock off.  Thoughts?

I can't adjust my volume from the keyboard volume controls... they seem to be locked.  I tried system preferences, but couldn't find how to "unlock" them.  Thoughts?

Did you try unchecking this function?  It seems to work in reverse of what you would expect, or is that just my imagination?

  • I have a 2013 mac pro and the volume keys aren't changing the volume of my LED display. The icon shows up as going up or down but the volume seems to not adjust.

I've had this computer since october of 2013 or so and I have just recently run into this problem. I use the volume keys on the keyboard and I hear the tick sounds and it shows that its going up and down but the volume doesn't actually change. I've looked in the "sound" settings and everythings seems to be correct... I can't adjust the sound in their either though. I pay too much to be having an issue like this.

Possible? Yes. Likely? I'm not sure.
In my house, I would suspect that either one of our pets chewed on a cable or dislodged a connector, or somebody bumped a connection loose, but then I would expect either no volume at all or hum from a grounding problem. Clear, non-zero constant volume is harder to explain.
You say adjusting the output volume directly in the Sound settings or on the menu bar also has no effect on the audible output?
You might want to go ahead and answer the question about connections. Somebody else might come along who recognizes a possible problem with the particular combination you are using. I don't have exactly your model of Mac Pro or display. (Is yours the Apple LED Cinema Display? Which size?)

  • Volumeicon volume keys stop working after adjusting volume via icon

When Volumeicon is first started, the volume keys work fine, (although it doesn't show the volume bar like it does when you scroll on the icon for some reason). When I adjust the volume by scrolling the mousewheel on the icon, the volume keys stop working and volume can only be adjusted via scrollwheel. Volumeicon must be restarted to restore volume key functionality.
Why is this happening? What's going on?

Is this something that worked previously but then stopped working correctly?
What window manager / desktop environment are you using?
If you start volumeicon from the command line then use it are there any error messages?
Alternatively, does the volumeicon-gtk2 packagen in the AUR work better?

  • Keyboard keys showing different symbol to what I press

My keyboard isn't working properly, when I press the letter 'o' it shows the symbols 'oty' and when I press 'N' it brings up a new page of whatever I'm on. Also when I press 'L' it shows the copyright symbol followed by a dot and what looks the the letter 'L' floating on its side. Can someone please help with this? I'm just so confused and been trying all sorts of things for over two hours now.

Open system preferences, Universal Access, Keyboard tab and see if sticky Keys is on.
If it is, turn it off.
If this is not the source of the problem, try using a other keyboard to see if the problem is still present.
Also have a look in the Language & Text preference panel and check each tab to see if there is something wrong there. For example, is the selected language English? Is the Input source the correct one for you?

what to do if upon charging after a few minutes it shows the plug symbol on battery but the green battery icon on the main screen is still half?

One of two things usually. Less often charger is faulty, try another charger. Most often the plug symbol in this situation indicates faulty battery.

  • Brightness, media, and volume keys broken

I am at my wit's end trying to restore functionality to my special keys on my late 2007 macbook running OS X 10.6.8.
Some time two days ago something happened and now suddenly I cannot use the mute key (F10), the volume keys (F11, F12), the brightness keys (F1, F2), or the media keys (play/pause (F8), forward (F9), rewind(F7)). Probably the media eject key is non-functional too, but I'm afraid to put in a CD and test it in case I can't get it out.
Interestingly, the exposé "all windows" button (F3) works fine, as does the dashboard button (F4).
I think I instigated the problem installing and poorly uninstalling logitech command center or maybe somehow poorly uninstalling logmein.com sound drivers, but that's just guilt by association AND I've tried everything I can think of in terms of uninstalling those apps, reinstalling them, and carefully uninstalling them correctly. Still, my half-baked best theory of what happened is that the logitech software reassigned some key functions somehow.
I am using a logitech K750 external keyboard and a M510 mouse via a unifying receiver. The keyboard is the version intended for a PC but was working pretty fine on my macbook (windows key worked as command key, Fn+volume keys worked as expected). I installed Logitech Control Center (LCC) for Macintosh because I wanted to adjust the horizontal scrolling via the mouse wheel (it was way too fast for my tastes). Installation of LCC prompted the keyboard setup assistant ("Your keyboard cannot be identified..."), even though I was only interested in adjusting the mouse and the keyboard was working fine. I ran through the setup assistant as instructed. Roughly since then, I've lost volume adjusting functionality on both the external (logitech) and built-in keyboard as well as all the other functions mentioned on the built-in keyboard.
I've been obsessed with this the last day and a half with no luck. Here is a pretty comprehensive list of what I've tried to fix the problem, though I may forget something since I've done so much:
    -removed all peripheral hardware.
    -use a different user account.
    -SMC Reset
    -PRAM reset
    -Safe mode
-System preferences reset/ inspect all settings related to keyboard, universal access, text to speech according to the numerous help files I found online. (yes, I unchecked "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys"
-turned off all google chrome background apps and inspected the key bindings of all chrome extensions.
-Removed Cache folder from library folder.
-removed recently installed software that I suspected might be related, reinstalled, re-uninstalled.
-installed OnyX and run all the maintenance/restoration routines I saw in it that didn't sound too scary.
-Turned on keyboard viewer and verified that each guilty key is recognized by the system when I press it (they all are!).
No luck. I don't have a snow leopard install disk but I just bid on one on ebay because I'm starting to feel like my only option is a time-machine full system restore
Please help! I'm still holding out hope that there is some simple way to get under the hood and re-assign or reset the keys. I can't even figure out how to disconnect the logitech peripherals (keyboard and mouse), though I've removed all the logitech software I can find.

I have an early 2007 Mac Book Pro 17" and had to re-install OS X 10.6.8 because of some problems created while installing a 2nd operating system.
After installing 10.6. the screen brightness keys wouldn't work (F1 and F2), I tried updating to 10.6.8 that didn't solve the problem either.
I'm still having this problem and plan to try to fix it today. I had previously seen a link where someone was explaining which files or extensions in the Library folder/directory control those functions and to see if they were all present.
I will search for that link again as I forgot to save it. If that works i'll share the link with you later.

  • 10.4.11 -- A fix for broken brightness/volume keys

    Simple answer: Reboot again
I ran into this issue myself on my iBook: that after doing the mandatory reboot after the 10.4.11 update, the brightness and volume keys on the internal keyboard would no longer work.
This seems to be an issue for a few people, going by my initial googling of the issue, so I thought I'd drop a note in here to suggest people do another reboot before pulling out their hair.
    Message was edited by: arctanx

BDAqua, no I haven't. I should probably do that again now.
Is that related to these kinds of issues, or is that just some general maintenance advice?
Edit: Ah I just saw your advice in [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1307351&tstart=0]. Cool.

  • Media Keys working/Volume keys broken

I used to use MultiPlugin by localhost to make the media keys on my keyboard work when iTunes was minimized. This worked great. When I updated iTunes to 7.1, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the media keys worked fully without any plugins. However, after using my computer for a few hours I found that the volume keys performed a "double press" when I was only pressing the buttons once. What happens is that when I try to mute/unmute the system the volume will be muted and immediately unmuted or vice versa. I have narrowed this problem down to iTunes, seeing as when I stop running iTunes, the keys work fine. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Justin

    "Compatibility with Windows Vista
iTunes 7.1 addresses a number of known compatibility issues with Windows Vista. Apple is actively working with Microsoft to resolve a few remaining known issues, including:
Ejecting an iPod from Windows Explorer or the Windows notification area (system tray) using the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature may corrupt your iPod. To always safely eject an iPod, choose Eject iPod from the Controls menu within iTunes. If your iPod becomes corrupt, selecting your iPod in iTunes and clicking Restore in the iPod's Summary panel should return your iPod to a working condition.
iTunes may display text or graphics incorrectly on your screen. Resizing the iTunes window should correct this issue.
Contacts from Windows Address Book may not sync with iPod.
iTunes remains unsupported on 64 bit editions of Windows, including Windows Vista and Windows XP x64."

  • Broken Ipod Symbol

My Ipod Color has been working fine for 2 years, recently I have been experiencing problems with it. At first it would just freeze, and I would have to reset it by pushing the menu button and the select button, but now when i try to turn it on, all it displays is a broken ipod symbol, and also a folder icon. Does anyone know what this could mean? Thanks!

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=501330&tstart=0
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)

2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote
