Vonage - Linksys WRTP 54G - airport express

I have tried a bunch of things but to no avail.....
cable modem > vonage/linksys WRTP 54G ------ wireless (2) airport express
Can someone help with a step by step set up so that the airport express's will acutally carry the signal from the linksys router. I get the green light and can even print to the AE, but my internet signal is not being carried through, since I can't hook up an ethernet cable to a remote AE and surf the net?
Please help, I am about ready to see how far I can throw these AE things, probably pretty far since I can get a good grip on them.
Thanks in advance

I believe that this is not possible.
In other words it doesn't support WDS.

Hey there, I hope you guys can help b/c I am having a heck of a time with this. I'm having Error-8 issues with my ichat AV 3.1 despite numerous changes. Here's the setup.
Motorola cable modem-->Linksys BEFSR41 wired router-->Airport Express and Vonage VOIP conected to router.
Imac Intel 2 GHZ 20" and MBP CD 2.16GHZ both running Tiger 10.4.10
Router setup: DHCP enabled (Obtain IP automatically, all port forwarding ports opened as per Ralph's numerous posts. Disabled DMZ, Disabled UPnP b/c Airport Express does not support (Even though the router CAN use UPnP). MTU enabled 1492
Comcast Cable: I called them and they do not give out DNS's for setting up static IP addresses.
    Router IP: 192.168.1.1

Port mapping, Access control, and WDS tabs all left blank.
    Imac Network Prefs:

    Mac Firewall OFF
Quicktime Prefs: Set to 1.5 MBPS T1/ Internet LAN

Quicktime Prefs: Set to 1.5 MBPS T1/ Internet LAN
iChat Prefs: AIM port set to 443 b/c of Vonage. Bandwidth set to NONE.
Main issues.... error -8 when trying to video or audio chat. Tested with appleu3test03= NO GO with Intel iMac but MBP works! Tried vid chat with brother and NEITHER WORK.
I cannot figure out what is going on but I think it is the router. Problems started when I switched to Linksys from netgear. Could it be that I need to just pony up and get an Airport Extreme so that I can utilize UPnP? Or am I missing something.
Thanks in advance for the help.

    Hi,
I would renumber the devices radiating out from the router (192.168.1.1)
    Airport 192.168.1.100
    Computer one 192.168.1.101
    Computer two 192.168.1.102
It's not a big thing but I prefer it in case the power goes off or things needs rebooting. And it points to the order of things
The Airport doing NO Distributing Addresses should allow UPnP to work. It's just a dumb Wireless Access Point now.
Otherwise if you are doing Port Forwarding it will be to only one Computer and only Text chatting will work on both due to the 443 port being below 1024(NAT)
If the Airport is not allowing UPnP then I would go for Port Triggering if your Linksys does it.
Some BEFS41 versions do. I have linked yo to the lowest version listed on the Port Forward site's Triggering pages.
Don't worry too much about the PC app they say you need.
Fill in the Trigger port at the top and without hitting enter scroll down to see how that effects the table.
Then set it up like this
This pic shows Port 5190 and the AV ports
You will need to add the Bonjour Ports (5297, 5298 and 5353) and Jabber ones (5220, 5222, 5223) as single lines like the port 5190
On My Linksys you did not have to specify Protocols. Nor do you on the link above.
As you have gone Static (router to Airport) you could try allowing the Airport to do Distributing Addresses as the Subnet problem will have been dealt with and the NAT issue will be more linear.
The Vonage device will have conflict on port 5060 (In fact 5060-5063) with iChat if In-Line between the computers and the Modem. Your set up suggests that this is not the case and it should not be an issue.
If by Brother you mean the other computer this will need the Bonjour Ports in both directions (5297, 5298 and 5353) to be able to work.
Strangely this still needs the port 5060 and does contact the SNATMAP server according to my Little Snitch hence the reason for UPnP or Port Triggering for your LAN.

  • Linksys WRT54G to Airport Express

    Hi,
I have my computer hard wired to a Linksys WRT54G. I recently purchased an Airport Express to play my iTunes from my computer. I followed the instructions here: http://rgbdream.com/?p=44
The problem is this: I connect my AE via Ethernet for set-up as instructed in the above directions. I make the settings, and My iTunes broadcasts through AE as it should. However, when I disconnect the ethernet cable, AE loses the signal. I double-checked all my settings and I'm sure I have them as the article states.
I am pretty new to wireless, so the "cookbook" approach in the article is what I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. One other thing I forgot to mention is that I do not have an Airport card in my Mac. I am only trying to use the Linksys router and the AE. In the near future, I would like to join a second Mac (with an airport card) to the network.
Was there something incorrect in the original directions posted at the beginning of this thread? Thanks.

  • Imac G5 to Linksys Network AND Airport express(AX) for music, lost internet

G5 is connecting to wireless linksys network but no longer getting IP address (nor connecting to network to configure AX and itunes doesn't see remote speakers) Using DHCP, can see Mac addresses on Linksys web configure screens.
I had the G5 connecting to Linksys Network WRG wireless router accesspoint through to DSL modem. This has worked fine for months. Also connect to this network with WinPC. All using WPA Personal security password.
CD Player died, so I purchased the Airport Express to play music to my stereo.
I did get the Airport Express configured...although many tries. I had to turn on broadcast of network name or SID in the Linksys webconfig. Music did play from G5 but I somehow lost the ability to connect to internet. Firefox gave "cannot connect" message. (Safari Network Diagnostics cannot fix issue) When I stopped and restarted the Airport(on G5) the music quit playing. Still have green light on Express. WinPC still works fine as well, HOWEVER:
G5 says that either(depending on which Im trying) that Airport is connected to "wireless network name" but doesn't have ip address OR that ethernet is connected but doesn't have ip address. I see on linksys that the mac addresses are "on". I've restarted everything, I've trashed the sys config folder and restarted G5...still same issue. Again WinPc works fine. Using DHCP...
Any ideas on how to get my G5 back on network? and then I can try to have the AX work again.
No tunes, and now no internet...help?

  • Linksys WAG120N and Airport Express - Does this work ??

    Hi,
    I just replaced my Linksys WAG54G by a WAG120N modem-router.
I still have a problem with my Airport Express.
Everything was working fine with the WAG54G but since I'm using the WAG120N I always got the same problem.
After switching OFF-ON the Airport Express, I can only see it during a few minutes in the Airport Utility. After this, it disappears (until next reboot, etc.).
I've used the same setup/config for my modem-router (compared to the old one).
    Firmware has been upgraded.
I've completely re-configured the Airport Express.
    I've re-installed the Airport Utility.
I've also tried to use other channels, etc.
When I'm using the WAG54G, I do not have any problem !
Is this WAG120N finally compatible with the Airport Express ?
I'm really needing some help (before bringing it back to the vendor and selecting another model) !
    Please, it's urgent !
    Thks

Yes it is visible during a few minutes when I switch it off-on.
I can then access the config and change some parameters but after those +/- 5 minutes it disappear from the Airport List.
... and this is also true when you have the AX directly connected to your iMac via Ethernet?
I just want to be sure that the AX itself is not potentially fault.
When joined to another wireless network, of course, it will be dependent on the "stability" of that network. One other thing that might be possible is if you have the new Linksys configured for any special type of mode. One that I can think of is called "burst" mode. Another is wide-channel mode for the 2.4 GHz band. Neither of these are supported by the AX and may be a reason that it keeps dropping the connection.
Finally, were both routers purchased in your country and are made to operate there? I've seen this problem before when, for example, an individual buys a router, let's say, to be used in Japan and tries to operate it in Europe.

  • Linksys wireless router + Airport Express

    Hello Everybody,
I just installed the Linksys wireless router to share Internet and printer - works fine with my G5.
But - now I cannot see the airport station anymore which I used to transfer music to different rooms. If I start Airport exp. administration programm, it shuts down the wireless connection to the router.
    So how to install now?
    Thanks for help

  • Linksys router and Airport express

I need to add a AX as a router to a Linksys router, so I can add a guest network on the AX.. The Linksys router is wired only.. Can this be down and how?

try eliminating a hop. instead of connecting to the router, connect to the Express, assuming it is setup to act as a remote base station.
if you are connected to the router via wireless, to reach the AEX, you are having to go thru the router first, then to the AEX. A direct connection to the AEX will reduce ping times, etc, thus possibly providing a more stable connection to attached speakers.

  • Linksys WAP54G, Airport Express WDS and WPA

    Hello,
I have previously been able to set up my Linksys gear and Airport Express to work in WDS with AirTunes thanks to the great thread at
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=607414&ft=y&#607414
I am wanting to know if there has been any update in being able to do the above but with WPA and not WEP.
I would prefer to have WPA obviously and was wondering if anyone has been able to do this and what additional steps are required.
    Regards

I have been trying to set this up with my WRT54G for a while now and have had no success. I've tried pretty much every 3rd party firmware available.
After countless Googles and searching many forums, I've found that nobody has been able to establish a WDS connection w/WPA between a Linksys router and AX. There have been a few people that say that apple is doing something incorrect, how I know that WDS with WPA work just fine between the AEBS and AX. Note that you can let the AX join as a client and have WPA work, but it won't work if it joins via WDS.
I have basically given up my search and am currently looking for an AEBS on eBay.

  • Linksys & AirPort Express; Can i do this?

    I have a Linksys WRT54G.
What I would like to do is setup a Airport Express and conect it using a CAT-5 to a Windows PC. Then have the Airport Express communicate with the Linksys so the PC would then have connection to the Internet.
    Is this possible?
    TIA

    iMac Intel 20" 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   2GB ram, 256MB vid ram

    Thanks for taking the time.
Actually, right know I have an out-of-the-ordinary setup.
I have (of course) the Linksys router. In the house 2 of the PC on the network are each connected to a WAP54 from their internal 10/100 NIC to the WAPs that are configured as to bridge mode. Basically the WAPs are acting as over-grown wiress NICS.
This configuration worked great in my old house where the construction was slightly different and the and the distance between the router and the WAPs wasn't as great.
Linksys wireless are great products as long as you don't have any obstructions. You know, like those silly wall things ;~)
So, I'm wondering if I can replace the Linksys WAPs with Airport Express and get a better signal. I just thought I ask first before dropping $130 on each device.
    Thanks again!

  • Using Airport Express as separate wifi network vs extender with Time Capsule?

Hello all.  I recently converted my home computer network from Windows/PC based to an iMac with Time Capsule.  On my previous setup, I had a Cisco/Linksys router with wifi, and I also had two Airport Expresses in separate areas of the house where the Linksys had a weak signal.  Obviously, I had the Airport Expresses set up as "separate" wifi networks, as they could not be used as network extenders with the Linksys.  This setup seemed to work really good, as the 3 wifi networks provided good blanket coverage in all parts of the house.  Each network also seemed to "hand-off" to the other pretty well, meaning that Airport Express 1 would show as the active network when you moved far enough away from the Linksys (or insert any of the network names here, even though I'm pretty sure that the device accessing the network has more to do with this than the networks themselves).  In particular, the speeds that I got from the Airport Expresses actually eclipsed the speeds that I would get from the Linksys wifi.
My issue is that after I converted everything, I left the Airport Expresses as "separate networks" and essentially removed the Linksys/Cisco router and replaced it with the Time Capsule.  So I still have 3 separate wifi networks, just like before, with the Time Capsule network taking the place of the Linksys wifi network.  While the Linksys and the Airport Expresses seemed to co-exist together nicely, I get the feeling that the TC and the AEs are somehow working against each other or at least competing with each other for bandwidth.  For example, if I have my iPhone right beside my iMac and TC, and I run a speed test on the iPhone using the TC wifi network, I get download and upload speeds in the range that I am expecting (30-40 mbps download).  However, when I walk down the hallway to the other end of the house, the TC tends to remain the dominant wifi network, even when I am in the same room with one of the AEs (this is where they used to "hand off" nicely between networks).  When you run a speed test in this location still on the TC wifi, the speed drops down to 5-7 mbps, and worse, I believe the signal becomes inconsistent because webpages and data often seem to be freezing in the middle of downloading.  I understand that the distance from the TC is causing this, because my solution has been to manually switch from the TC to the closest AE, and that fixes the issue.  Run a speed test after I manually switch to the closest AE when I am in the same room as an AE, and the speeds pop back up to 30-40 mbps.
My question is this:  would switching the AEs to "extenders" of the TC wifi network help this issue?  Honestly, my laziness was one reason that I did not do this when I setup the TC initially, because I have several devices that access the AE wifi networks that I'd have to update with the new network name and password.  Everything was working great before, and I just didn't want to upset the apple cart.  But if I have created an unfriendly environment between the TC and the two AEs, I certainly have no problem making the change now.  I just wasn't sure if making this change would fix my problem or not.  I know it's a mundane thing, but I'd like to be able to roam the house without continuously having to manually switch between wifi networks to get a consistent signal.
Sorry if this is a simple issue.  I am admittedly a newbie with the TC and its interaction with the AEs.
    Thanks in advance!!

It is not a simple issue.
Exactly which method works best is going to take some experimentation.
The way you are trying to set it up as a roaming network is generally considered the best.. but the devices like iphones do not hand off neatly.
It is interesting that they in fact used to hand off better using the Linksys.. which could be due to its poorer range. The new TC having so much better range is causing the phones to not swap "towers" to the local express.
Test it with a Mac laptop.. as generally they do hand off better.
I cannot quite figure out if you are using roaming correctly. All the wireless should have identical names, with identical security setting and passwords.
The only thing that should be different is wireless channels on each item. And you are likely just using auto anyway.
So each device is creating a wireless network. And for 2.4ghz one should be channel 1, then another channel 6 and another channel 11. For 5ghz it will be same idea but there are more channels available.
When you extend wireless, everything runs the same channel. But the wireless speed is reduced. You must disconnect ethernet to each of the expresses.. and the problem is your 30-40mbps will reduce permanently to 15-20mbps for all clients. So take your choice.. 15-20mbps for all clients forced to double hop is better than 5-7mbps which you experience now when you walk around.. although I am not sure how much browsing you do whilst walking. You may need to compromise which is the better out of several not great alternatives.
I would have a test.. which is wrong btw.. but I have heard that it works.
In your roaming network at the present time. Try setting each router to a manual wireless channel.. and fix all of them the same. So for instance, set 2.4ghz to channel 11. Try fixing the 5ghz as well, say the TC is defaulting to 149, it might not actually respond to manual wireless channels.. you will need to test this.. say set to 36 or 40 and see if the TC is actually changed.. if not just set all the expresses to 149 as well. What you are doing is trying to reinforce the wireless in each area.. but this is actually wrong. So all will have same wireless name and same security wpa2 personal is the only valid one.. and all the same password.
Test with a few clients and see if the results give you decent local speeds as well as better roaming.. once you decide which to do, then you will need to change all the clients.

  • Connect airport express to Motorola 3347

I want to connect my airport express to the Motorola Modem so I can run an network cable from the AX to my xBox
I have read most of the discussions on linksys and the airport express but none really can be used for the Motorola 3347 Modem.
I tried the regular setup and added it as a client with no problems what so ever however that does not allow any internet connection through the Ethernet port.
I tried having it connect and extend a current network however since it is not a airport extreme or express base station that would not work either.
I am sure that I will need to connect by WDS however cannot quite figure it out or get the information from the motorola that is needed.
Looking for any advice thank you in advance.

Well, if I understand your networking requirements, you would like to provide Internet access to your XBox ... which is not wireless capable. To do so with the AX would require that you plug the XBox into the AX's Ethernet port. In turn, to activate the AX's Ethernet port, the AX must be reconfigured as a remote base station in a WDS with your Motorola router. Therein lies the rub. I seriously doubt that you will be able to create a WDS between them.
Your other option would be to connect the XBox directly to the Motorola, but I'm assuming that they are not in the same room ... and why you wanted to extend your network in the first place. Another option would be to acquire a second AXn; connect one to the Motorola via Ethernet, and then create a WDS between the AXns.

  • Extend Range of Linksys WRE-54G using Airport Express?

I have a Linksys WRT-54G as my wireless router. I am currently extending its range across my house using a Linksys Range Extender WRE-54G. I want to connect a stereo and a PS3 in the basement to the network, using my Apple Airport Express.
When I configured the Airport Express as a simple range extender for the WRT-54G, it seems to crash?/interfere? with the WRE-54G, so neither the AE or the WRE work. If I unplug either the WRE or the AE, the other begins to operate again.
Any ideas what's wrong? What I can do to get it working as planned?
    Thanks,
    Michael

I use an airport express which connects to my airport extreme and extend my wifi that way would assume that an airport express connecting to another express would act likewise
not sure what you are asking it in the windows on mac forum though

  • I have a Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G wireless router and 2 Airport Extremes (the small ones that plug directly into the wall). Is it possible to extend the network from the router using these two AEs? I have a DVD player and Ext HD plugged into the router too..

I have a Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G wireless router and 2 Airport Extremes (the small ones that plug directly into the wall). Is it possible to extend the network from the router using these two AEs? I have a DVD player and Ext HD plugged into the router too. Any ideas? I'm guessing the only way is to do what I've seen in these community pages which states that it can be done but it will drop the bandwidth by 50%. Thoughts?? Thanks!

The Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G was one of the very few routers said to be compatible with Apple's implementation of WDS (Wireless Distribution System) settings.
The info that I have on file indicates that only the WRT-54G versions 4 and under were compatible, so that would be one bridge to cross.
Even if you find that your Cisco/Linksys might be the right version, Apple never published instructions on how to configure the Express devices with other manufactures, so users were left to their own devices to try to figure out how to get things working. Apple's instructions to connect to other Apple devices are in the link below:
    WDS network
If you were hoping to use 2 Express devices in this type of configuration...even if it works...the bandwidth penalties will be extremely severe.
The first Express drops the bandwidth (and speed) on the entire network in half and the second halves everything again. So, the result, in effect would be a "g" wireless network running at 25% speed. Few users would consider installing this type of network.
At this point, it becomes one of those things where the fact that you might be able to do something does not mean that there would be much value in doing so. But, it is your decision to decide if you want to try to proceed.

  • What Vonage router to get with Airport Express?

After a recent lightning strike , I'm in the market for a new Vonage-compatible router that I could use along with Airport Express. I used to have a Linksys RT31P2 for Vonage and I plugged an Airport Extreme base station into it for wireless, but both boxes got fried. Given that I want to use an Airport Express box which will provide wireless, I figured I could get a Vonage-compatible router that isn't wireless (like the RT31P2) and save some money, but I'm having a hard time finding one (it seems the RT31P2 is now obsolete). Best Buy and Comp USA carry two Vonage devices, the Linksys PAP2 and the Linksys WRTP54G. The PAP2 doesn't have an ethernet port in which I could plug the Airport Express so that's no good. And the WRTP54G is a wireless device (which I don't need) that costs $110 (I thought I'd be able to find something around $50).
Any suggestions? Should I just buy the old RT31P2 on amazon or Ebay?
If it matters I have a Scientific-Atlanta PSC2100 series cable modem, and my computers are Mac laptops (Powerbook G4 and iBook G4) with Airport Extreme cards.
    iBook/Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Best Buy and Comp USA carry two Vonage devices, the Linksys PAP2 and the Linksys WRTP54G. The PAP2 doesn't have an ethernet port in which I could plug the Airport Express so that's no good. Best Buy also has rebates available on both of those devices. If you qualify the devices will be much cheaper.
Since the AirPort Express has a single Ethernet port, your options are limited.

  • Vonage to Airport Express

I just ordered an Airport Express for my new IMAC G5. Could anyone indicate if I can hardwire Vonage into the Express, run the G5 wireless and USB my printer to accomodate network printing. Steve

Could you explain how you hooked up? Did you make any changes to your configuration?
I've had no luck connecting my Westell modem, Airport Express and Linksys WRTP54G router. I cannot get telephone service out. If I connect either the modem or airport to the "Internet" port on the WRTP54G I lose internet service; if I connect both the Airport and modem to two ethernet ports, I have internet service.
Thanks in advance for any assistance
