VPC - peer gateway and peer switch

I understand that we need to use peer gateway on a vPC pair when HSRP is running, but why do we use peer switch if the vPC pair is not the root or seconday root of the network? Does it matter they send out different BIDs? What would be the worst case scenario when not using peer switch?

If you read the vPC Best Practices Design Guide the peer-switch feature reduces convergence time as a result of a spanning-tree failure from 3 seconds to sub-second.

  • VPC between server and nexus switches

    Hi all,
I would like to ask following question:
We are using virtual portchannels to connect e.g. ESXi-Servers with trunks on two Nexus switches. When the switch "rz2sw1" has gone faulty, we expect that the trunk connections between switch rz2sw2  would still work. That's the reason why they are built. But they didn't as you can see in the screenshot (attaced) former mail.
Do you know what can be problem.. thank you

It appears that the peer-link was down.  If the peer-link is down and the keep-alive is still up, the secondary device will shutdown all of it's VPC links to ensure dual active (split brain) is avoided.
On a Nexus 7000, its recommended to use a front panel (data port) for the keep-alive instead of the management port.  My assumption would be that you are using the MGMT0 for keep-alive and all front panel ports went off-line.  If you use a front panel port for keep-alive and all line cards go off line on the primary, the secondary will take over as expected.

  • VPC peer-gateway on Nexus 7k

Hi, can anyone please elaborate of how packets will be forwarding if peer-gateway is NOT enable on vPC for Nexus 7k pair? can we still have active/active path forwarding?

A similar discussion is as below:
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3989694#3989694
As addition , basically if peer-gateway is not used, the same packet may use the peer-link and be routed by the active hsrp device, which increases the load and the number of switched hops of the packet which may be a performance consideration.  With a good design, under normal conditions peer-link is basically used for control traffic, no data traffic passes through peer-link besides non-vpc orphan links. Can't think of any scenarios where it may be more suitable not to use this command with hsrp.

  • Does VPC Peer Gateway cause downtime?

    Hello,
I have a quick question. We recently implemented VPC based network design with few SVIs (with HSRP) on a pair of NEX 5500s, but I forgot to include the 'peer-gateway' command. I understand the benefit of that command on FHRP like HSRP. My question is, if I apply that on a production NEX 5500 switches, would that cause any downtime? Could someone please confirm? Many thanks in advance!
    Regards,
    Mark

It shouldnt, but again we request you to kindly do it out of office hours or in MW.
below is the detail info on Auto-recovery:-

  • VPC, VPC Peer-links and VDC

I have 2 7Ks and will run VPC and multiple VDCs.
Should it be a separete VPC Peer-link and keep-alive link per VDC?
I am not sure but I guess yes since a physical interface should be allocated to a VDC.
    I just need confirmation.
    thanks

Yes, if you are having 4 VDCs with vPC, you will need 4 separate vPC peer-links. VDC is a physical separation (even though it is the same box) and it cannot communicate across VDC.

  • Thoughs on interconnecting Nexus 3548 and 3750 switches

    Hi,
I have two nexus 3548 switches.
I have created port-group 1  on both switches to group eth1/47 with eth1/48.
I have 4 sfps, 2 per switch. to connect to a single 3750 that I want to group together as well.
    So I have gi1/0/31 going to eth1/1 on nexus1 and gi1/0/32 going to eth1/2 on nexus1
    I have gi1/0/33 goin to eth1/1 on nexus2 and gi1/0/32 goin to eth1/2 on nexus2
When I create the port group on the 3750 do I create one group with all 4 ports or will I have to create 2, one per nexus switch?
    Thanks

Thanks for the replies. I finally got to test the hardware and config yesterday.
Just so I am clear. the vpc and peer to peer links are only for interconnecting the two Nexus switches. I think I got that right. sho VPC br seems to say it is up. I am using Po5
    vPC domain id : 1
Peer status : peer adjacency formed ok
vPC keep-alive status : peer is alive
    Configuration consistency status : success
    Per-vlan consistency status : success
    Type-2 consistency status : success
    vPC role : secondary
Number of vPCs configured : 0
    Peer Gateway : Disabled
    Dual-active excluded VLANs : -
    Graceful Consistency Check : Enabled
    Auto-recovery status : Disabled
    vPC Peer-link status
    id Port Status Active vlans
    1 Po5 up 1
Next do I create a port channel on Nex1 and Nex2 for the two ports that connect to the 3750 (Po6 for example) or do I add the two links to the 3750s to Po5 ? I thought I add them to Po 5 but since I am mixing 1000 and 10G ports it doesnt seem to like it.

When I open about this mac -> more info and I switch through the tabs (display, memory, storage, support, service) it lags (fps drops, animation looks choppy not smooth) even though all the mac (programs , interface ) works smooth . Why does this happen? (over 300 gb free, same programs installed, free desktop-downloads -no garbage there- everything neat and tidy.) Need some help. Only there it the animations goes like 2 fps and is not smooth. I do not understand why because the programs are the same so its the usage. Nothing is changed, yet i experience this little issue for a couple of days.

OK, I'm confused. When I do About this Mac > More Info in OS10.9, I don't see any animation other than the window resizing. Is that the animation you are describing?

  • Is it possible to Configure VPC Between N5010 and 6513

    Hello Gents,
Please let me know if we can  configure VPC Between N5010 and 6513(coreswitch).
IF Yes, Does it have any loops or abnormal traiffc behaviour ?
Please refer the attached mail for current network diagram
    1) I would like to establish VPC Between N5010 and Cisco 6513 switch
    2) if yes, Does the upstream devices above 6513 core switch will forward the traffic from all the
6513 ports connected to N5000 ports or 6513 will send traffic from one up link and block other
uplink ports as part of STP.
    3) Is VSS on 6513 is required for Point #1
Please refer some links on this as well.
    Appreciate your quick response.
    Thanks and Regards,
    KA.

    Hi Karim ,
You can use this one - you can consider your 6k the FEX as in this example
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps9441/ps9670/configuration_guide_c07-543563.html
On the portchannel to 6k will not configure :
    "switchport mode fex-fabric"
    "fex associate 100"
This configuration in indended to be used with FEX.

  • Setting up gateway and firewall in OS X Server 10.3?

    Hi all,
I have a G4 tower with two working ethernet cards in it that I would like to configure as a gateway and firewall. It has OS X Server 10.3 on it. I have easily found the firewall configuration in the Server Admin intrerface, but I can find nothing about configuring the server to act as a gateway. The only information I have found that is pertinent is related to the Gateway Setup Assistant that comes with OS X Server 10.4, which doesn't exaclty help me. Does anyone have any documentation on configuring OS X Server 10.3 to be a gateway? Thanks.

Actually, I may have marked this as answered too quickly...
So I followed the guide at the back of the getting started manual, and set everything up as follows:
    - PCI ethernet card is set up as the connection to the outside world. It is plugged into a switch which connects to a wall jack. In Network under System Preferences, it is set up as the first internet conection to try. It has a static IP address, and is set up to use the organization's DNS servers. It is NOT plugged into the upstream port, but is instead in port #9. The light on the router is on.
    - Built-in wireless is set up to be the internal connection. It is plugged into the upstream slot on anouther switch. It has a static IP address, and is set up to use the organization's DNS servers. The light on the router is on, so it appears there is a connection.
    - A different computer is plugged into the second switch, which a static IP address and to use the organization's DNS servers.
So basically, unlike in the scenario in the manual, I am not using the OS X Server for DNS, DHCP or NAT services. That should, if anything, simplify it.
The firewall service is started, and is set to allow all traffic in and out, no problems. Nice and simple to start.
The server has an okay connection to the outside world via the PCI ethernet card. I can ping other machines and load web pages. I cannot, however, access the machine connected to the router which is connected to the built-in ethernet. Likewise, that machine has no access to either the OS X Server or the outsideworld.
How does OS X Server decide which ethernet card is to be connected to the outside world, and which is for the internal firewall? Is the confusion possible because I'm connected to two routers?

  • Internal and external switches on server 2012 r2

    this is driving me nuts.
I have a vm with an internal and external switch.
I am trying to get backups to route to the host machine using the internal switch only.
I've gone all over priorities and the routes are all fine but the data will constantly go over the external switch.
If i disable external switch traffic goes over internal switch just fine.
I've read about the automatic detection of least cost routing on the internal switch but just can not get it to run correctly.
    please help

  • Best connection with U-verse Gateway and AirPort Extreme

These past couple of weeks I've been having problems where my AirPort Extreme (connected to my U-verse Gateway) has been randomly rebooting. I had Apple exchange the entire unit along with power cables and AT&T has already switched out the Gateway and it was STILL rebooting. I finally reset both to factory settings and started fresh. I turned off the Wireless on the U-verse Gateway and the Extreme is in Bridge Mode. That is how its always been and luckily fixed the rebooting. I am now having issues with my devices losing connection. For example, on my iPad Air, it'll show it is connected to my Network, but going onto Safari and trying to load a page gives me the "Server Not Responding" error. Issues also happen on not only Apple devices, but on a Wii U where I get connection errors. I HAVE NOT had these problems on my iMac (which is wireless), just on these other devices. I have not messed around with DMZ Plus Mode or changed any settings on the Gateway other than turning off the Wireless. I think it might have something to do with IP Addresses or something, but I am really not sure. If you have this same set-up, are you having these issues or what settings do I need to change? Thank you!

Ok so I began by reseting both devices and that fixed the majority of the "Server Not Responding" errors. BUT now I'm getting the problem where the AirPort Extreme randomly reboots. Like all of a sudden, all my devices will be disconnected from WiFi. When I go to the router, the Amber light is blinking then goes back to green. This was the issue from the very beginning and it really is very annoying. Can anyone help? If not, I'll try to contact AppleCare and post their solution in case somebody else is having these issues.

  • CVP: using the Gatekeeper and the SIP Proxy, why? VXML gateway and the ingress gateway communication?

    Hi All;
I am actually keep asking with my self, why to use gatekeeper or SIP proxy when deploying the CVP solution, why not to use the Call Manager? Is it because that the concept built on SIP and H323 so call manager can not handle these kind of operations as call manager is supporting MGCP?
From the other side, what kind of trunk or protocol of communication method is used between the ingress gateway and the VXML browser?
    Any advise?
    Regards
    Bilal

The main reason is not all who deployed ISN/CVP in the past use Call Manager as the PBX.
CVP is a powerful solution that covers many deployment scenarios. Its ability to integrate with legacy switches has been very important in the past, and although as we move forward, these types of deployments will probably become fewer, the independence of CVP on Call Manager remains a cornerstone of the design.
I'm glad it was built that way. Look at some of the other deployment models (like Call Director) in the CVP Guide.
It's not because Call Manager supports MGCP - you don't need to have any MGCP gateways in your Call Manager deployment. You could have all H.323 gateways and manage the dial plan on the gateways with a gatekeeper. Or use SIP.
The ingress gateway does not talk to the VXML server - the VXML gateway does.
In a branch office design, these are one and the same; but that's not the fundamental architecture. The IOS on the VXML gateway runs a voice browser (I guess you could call this a VXML browser). It uses HTTP to send and receive information (VXML documents) from the VXML server - whether this be the CVP Call Server or an external VXML server (like what was brought in-house with the Audium acqusition - the Cisco CVP VXML Server).

    Geoff

I am a new mac user and I switch to mac due to the graphics that it brings. I do website in pc and I heard iweb is the best.NOW i heard that iweb will be discontinue. so what is the best application there for website using MAC OSX lion?

It is now confirmed  that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.
