VPLS PE to CPE hand-off restrictions...

Hello,
I am investigating the implementation of a VPLS roll out over an existing MPLS network.  The current PE devices are running MPLS and M-BGP with no issues and layer-3 services are running for our customers.  Recently we have began to have requests for layer-2 services and we have used the occassional xconnect without issues to achieve this, however we are looking to provide more advanced any-any connectivity for one of the customers which is making VPLS look like a good option for us.  When we were using a layer-2 xconnect we would simply present the layer-2 connection on a sub-interface on the PE device and bridge it through the CPE router using bridge-groups - which is not very elegant but it does work. Sometime the downstream CPE device is actually a switch using SVI's and in this instance we can simply switch the connection straight though at layer-2.
My issue is that the CPE's in use are primarily routers (and not switches that can implement SVI's) so the connection configuration from the PE to the CPE is configured using sub-interfaces on routed ports rather than trunks and VLAN interfaces.  I can amend this easily enough on the PE devices (6509 and 760x) however C290x, C1812 and C2811 devices only work using sub-interfaces so you cannot use SVIs - please correct me if this is wrong...
The configuration examples I have seen for VPLS implies its the whole interface that is configured on the PE device using "switchport mode dot1q-tunnel" or similar.
Existing - MPLS PE --> Trunk containing sub-interfaces with L3 P-2-P connections and L2 xconnect --> CPE router
Required - MPLS PE --> Trunk containing sub-interfaces with  L3 P-2-P connections, VPLS and L2 xconnect --> CPE router
Is there any sneaky way to index sub-interfaces into VPLS or does it have to be the whole port? Q-in-Q for example appears to be a switch function and not router option as it requires switchport commands which are not available on a router CPE such as the C1812, C290x and C28xx.
If need be then I will recommend that the CPE devices need to be swapped out for a L3 switch, however this would add greatly to any design implementation costs and I would like to retain the existing CPE routers if possible.
In a nutshell here we have a remote CPE connected over a WAN link of some sort and I want to be able to offer existing Layer-3 services, EoMPLS xconnect services and VPLS all over the same WAN bearer where the CPE is a router and not a switch.
Thanks for any guidance.
Keith

Hello Keith
There is an option on 2900, 1800, 2800 series router to add switching modules and this will help add the switching funtionality and the CLI's related to it. It shall solve your purpose. Please refer to the below mentioned white paper:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps5853/prod_white_paper0900aecd8064c9f4.html
Please let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hands off calling from Macbook pro to iPhone 5 not connecting

    I cannot get my iMac to make a phone call using hands off through my iPhone. It continues to tell me they are not connected to the same Wi-Fi, and they are. I got it to work one time the day before after doing a soft reset on my iPhone. What can I do to correct this? All other features are working.

    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
    from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

    I forgot the passcode to turn off restrictions. I have restored my iPad back to the factory settings and then synced it with the latest backup. The restrictions are still on and it is asking for the passcode. Can someone tell me how to get that off.

    The only option is to wipe the device clean and restore it to factory settings.  Hope you have a backup.
    Follow the instructions in  iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137 to restore the device to factory settings.
    Once you have setup the device as a new one, you can then sync it back with your iTunes account and all your music, apps, contacts and any other content sync'ed with iTunes will be loaded on the device. Any content that is stored only on the device and not sync'ed with iTunes, like app logins or data, will be lost during this process. Be forewarned that this is a long process and can take a couple of hours or more to complete. This can be painful, but it is necessarily so to prevent users from working around the security settings. After the restore is complete, you can setup a new Restrictions passcode. Make a note of the passcode to avoid this situation in future.
     Cheers, Tom

    Hi,
    Trying to connect to a remote database which worked in 10.1.3 developer preview gives now:

    ORA-12518, TNS:listener could not hand off client connection
    The Connection descriptor used by the client was:
    From sqlplus I can connect. I don't have access to the remote database server/configuration. I tried the workarounds specified here

    another important information is that connecting by the default listener LISTENER instead of the LISTENER_BKP_1 listener, the connection is completed successfully. There's enough SGA memory space too.

    ORA-12518: TNS:listener could not hand off client connectionDon't do Oracle on Windows, so I'm not sure how the following relates to the Listener dealing with a dedicated server connection request on Linux/Unix.
    On Linux/Unix, a dedicated server request means just that - a dedicated process has to be started to service that client. The Listener does it by using the parameters of the configured listener.ora service to execute +$ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle+. This process then starts up, and the Listener hands off the client connection for this process for servicing.
    If there is a failure somewhere on this series of steps fail, the Listener throws the ORA-12518 exception. For example, the +$ORACLE_HOME+ has been incorrectly configured in listener.ora and it fails to execute and startup a dedicated server process.
    And this relates to the underlying error you are seeing:
    TNS-12518: TNS:listener could not hand off client connection
    TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
    TNS-00530: Protocol adapter error
    32-bit Windows Error: 2: No such file or directoryI think that the Listener on Windows uses the CreateRemoteThread() Win32 call to start up the server process thread. However, it needs a valid process identifier (of the existing Oracle instance) for this call - and thus needs to first identify the Oracle instance process. Could be that this step uses a ORACLE_HOME reference. And if that directory path is not valid, it is unable to identify the process id of the Oracle instance and thus unable to spawn a dedicated thread to service that client.

  • HT5594 After updating to iOS7 on my iPhone4 I cannot enable location services. How do I enable location services? I have tried turning off restrictions but that did not work.

    After updating to iOS7 on my iPhone 4 I cannot enable location services. How do I enable location services? I have tried turning off restrictions but that did not work.

    I finally just resolved this after not being able to enable location services since upagrading to iOS 7. Posting the solution here 'cause I couldn't find it anywhere else.
    I enabled Restrictions under Settings > General > Restrictions and created a passcode (I'm not sure if this was part of the solution, but it wasn't enabled for me by default.)
    In Restrictions, under Privacy, Location Services was set to "Allow Changes" (This still didn't solve the issue of the greyed-out Location Services switch though - I still couldn't turn it on.)
    Also in Restrictions, I also switched "Find My Friends" to "Allow Changes"
    Once I did step 3, the switch under Settings > Privacy > Location Services was no longer greyed out and could be switched on.
    Hope this helps!

  • Can't get hand off working

    i have hand off enabled on iPad and iPhone but it won't work can someone tell me how to get it to work please?

    Connect your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch using Continuity
    Handoff
    Use Handoff with Apple apps such as Mail, Safari, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Maps, Messages, Reminders, Calendar, Contacts. You can also use Handoff with some third-party apps. Start a document, email, or message on one device and pick up where you left off on another device.
    To use Handoff:
    On both devices, you'll need to turn on Bluetooth and sign in to the same iCloud account.

  • Solaris 10 hands-off installation from a bootable DVD

    Hello,
    I have a problem with installing the Solaris 10 using a bootable DVD with a flar archive. I want this installation to be totally hands-off, but unfortunately after I run this boot command at the ok prompt:
    ok boot cdrom - install ...
    the system is rebooted and the interactive Solaris Installation Program is launched:
    {color:#3366ff}-- The Solaris Installation Program
    The Solaris installation program is divided into a series of short sections
    where you'll be prompted to provide information for the installation. At
    the end of each section, you'll be able to change the selections you've
    made before continuing.
    About navigation...
    - The mouse cannot be used
    - If your keyboard does not have function keys, or they do not
    respond, press ESC; the legend at the bottom of the screen
    will change to show the ESC keys to use for navigation.

    F2_Continue F6_Help

    On the next screens I have to choose the NFS4 domain:
    {color:#3366ff}-- NFSv4 Domain Name{color}
    {color:#3366ff}NFS version 4 uses a domain name that is automatically derived from the
    system's naming services. The derived domain name is sufficient for most
    configurations. In a few cases, mounts that cross domain boundaries might
    cause files to appear to be owned by "nobody" due to the lack of a common
    domain name.
    The current NFSv4 default domain is: ""

    {color:#3366ff}[X] Use the NFSv4 domain derived by the system
    [ ] Specify a different NFSv4 domain
    Esc-2_Continue Esc-6_Help
    {color}
    After I select "Continue", the installation is proceeding automatically.
    Could you please tell me what I should to to make this installation hands-free?
    The sysidcfg file contains these parameters:
    system_locale=C
    timezone=PST8PDT
    timeserver=localhost
    terminal=sun-cmd
    name_service=NONE
    nfs4_domain=dynamic
    network_interface=primary {netmask=255.255.255.0 protocol_ipv6=no}
    security_policy=NONE
    I have found some information in the internet, that I need to create the
    .NFS4inst_state.domain file in /etc directory. But it doesn't work...
    I have also read that I need to edit the post installation script, but as far as I know this script is executed after the installation, so it doesn't affect the solaris Installation Program that is launched after the first reboot.
    If you could give me any tips on how to resolve yhis problem, I'd be very thankful.
    Regards,
    Przemek

    I had similar, not identical, issues with a custom JumpStart DVD I was creating. I was not using flar and it was for x86, not SPARC.
    I found that changing the case for the value assigned to network_interface made a difference. In looking at the sysidcfg manpage and online JumpStart documentation, all the examples they used had capitalized "PRIMARY" and "NONE". When I changed the value to the capitalized equivelant, my particular issue had gone away.
    You may also want to consider adding ip_address and default_route to the network_interface section. Test either way to identify the differing results.
    In my particular scenereo, I did not want any networking configuration to be done. The resulting line in sysidcfg was:
    network_interface=NONE {hostname=jsclient}HTH

    Attempting to connect my MacBook to my 4s iPhone.  I have had them connected in the past to use the "hands off" function. Today it tells me "network unavailable"  make sure network access is enabled.  I don't know what to do. I love the hands off feature as my iPhone is never with me when on my mac! I'm not sure what to do.  Both are "discoverable" via bluetooth and show up on each device but when I try to connect it says "network unavailable".  HELP!

    An iPhone will not pair via Bluetooth to a computer (Mac or Windows) except for personal hotspot and then only if your cellular plan supports it. https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-7722
    If you are attempting to use Handoff/Continuity, that does involve Bluetooth but the devices are NOT paired; Bluetooth just needs to be on and the devices in range of each other. The following may help with Handoff/Continuity issues: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5458
