VPN-1 SECURE CLIENT SUPPORT IN MAC OS 10.6 SNOW LEOPARD
We use the checkpoint client VPN-1 at work - it works fine with Leopard. However it doesnt work with Snow leopard. Does anyone know what the story is here? has anyone been able to connect to the checkpoint firewall with a vpn-1 substitute? if so how?

I plan to erase and install when upgrading as I come from the Windows world and just can't understand the concept of not erasing and installing.
Comparisons between Windows Operating Systems/machines and Macs and OS X are not necessarily apt. Even though we may not know exact details about Snow Leopard, we do know that Mac OS X offers several installation options, and the OS is designed to work within those parameters. In other words, an erase and install may not be appropriate or necessary under every condition.
In terms of backing up, one is well advised to maintain an up-to-date and reliable backup at all times, of course. However, this is even more critical whenever one contemplates undertaking any major procedure, such as installation of the OS. If you would like specific suggestions about backing up, please do ask. You don't have to know where all the files are on your HDD. There are several excellent utilities that will do the work for you.

Today, was prompted to install new security update. Did so. Now when click on + to open new tab the words New Tab appear in the tab. But, no dialog boxes appear to type in wanted new URL and no google dialog box appears in the tab area.

I understand your point about backups and disk permissions. I do have a back up copy and will adopt using the 'verify disk' step in future; so, for me the loss shouldn't amount to any more than the time I have spent, as frustrating as that is. However, I think the point I'd like to make is that doing a disk permissions check is fine for those like me [or others on this forum] since I work in a hi-tech industry, and have worked in a Unix/Linux environment for the last ~20 years so understand about permissions etc. , but I know people with Macs for whom the key advantage is that the they largely 'manage themselves' seamlessly. So, if the verify step is simply a pushbutton check-then-repair step and omitting it can lead to such fatal errors, then why can't it be built into the update script as the first automatic step ? What I mean is; my computer reached this unusable state simply by pressing 'ok' on a planned update, so to the average-Joe user it looks like a 'stop and catch fire mode'.
For info: I have now used Disk Warrior, which is reporting a disk malfunction, but can recover the user data. It seems to be a remarkable coincidence though, because there were no system problems exhibited before the update. -
Check Point VPN-1 Secure Client Software Compatibility w/ Intel iMac
Is this SW compatible with the new iMac? I'm trying to install a Secure Client SW but it stops in the middle of installation giving out only a general message - there were errors during the installation. Please help.
Thanks.The CheckPoint VPN-1 Secure Client software is only compatible with Mac OS v 10.3 (Panther). I had the same issue and am waiting for CheckPoint to update the software.

I have just purchased an iphone 4 and it needs me to have the latest itunes on my computer. I have not upgraded by computer for some time and thought this is probably the time to do it. My computer is an imac intel with Tiger 10.4.11. I want to upgrade my Imac from tiger 10.4.11 to Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard or higher. What is the best way to do this? Appreciate any help as I am out of practice. I used to be an old hand at this, but things have moved on since I didn't upgrade or use my computer as much!

Snow Leopard is not available to download from any legitimate source.
Once you install Snow Leopard, upgrade iTunes to version 10.7 or the latest, iTunes 11.
iTunes 10.6.3 is the last version of iTunes to support Mac computers with Mac OS X 10.5.8 with either Intel or PowerPC processors, but since you have an Intel iMac, the best solution is to purchase Snow Leopard. Leopard is no longer available from Apple and prices from aftermarket vendors can be unreasonably high. -
I used Roxio VHS to DVD for Mac (have iMac with Snow Leopard) and the audio does not synch with the video when playing in iMovie. Any suggestions to fix?
Thanks for the reply. I tried playing with detaching the audio in iMovie, but with 20+ hours of video to correct, it would take too long. After 28 hours, Corel/Roxio tech support replied that it is a known bitrate mismatch problem and they have no real fix. I strongly suggest not to buy this product.

Well, that may be the cause of the no install problem, as Snow Leopard does require at least 1gB of RAM. The Apple link below will show how it is installed.

Dreamweaver 8 install on Mac OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard

I have just done a fresh install of Mac OSx Snow Leopard (10.6) and am trying to install our copy of Dreamweaver 8 onto it. However I have now run into a few problems. Firstly it came up with an error message stating that some old format is no longer supported or something. I cant get the error message back up now, as now the CD will not mount within OSx!

Before upgrading, make a backup of your files onto an external drive with Time Machine. After upgrading, open > Software Update to install Mac OS X 10.6.8, so you will be able to install iTunes 11.1.4.

Check the system requirements for the various versions of Photoshop Elements and see which suits your system. Adobe only sells the most recent versions of their software, so if you need an older version you will need to find a vendor for it.

Should I upgrade Intel Core Duo 1 Mac Mini (2006) to Snow Leopard?
Okay I have a 80 GB Apple Mac Mini with Intel Core Duo 1 proccessor that shipped with Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.7) currently running 10.4.11 that I want to upgrade to either Leopard or Snow Leopard in a few months just in time for Christmas which I acquired in September 2006. It was the first Mac Mini model to include Apple's Front Row software and shipped with an Apple Remote (I know Macs don't ship with Apple Remotes anymore you have to buy them separately) and am now pondering an update. I've heard some things about Snow Leopard not working so well with older Macs even Intel based Macs that are only 32 bit.
Thing is I just got a new MacBook Pro that shipped with Snow Leopard and it seems to run fine on the MacBook Pro except for the fact a few applications I wanted to install wouldn't work with Snow Leopard like Google Desktop for Mac so was wondering if I should update the Mac Mini also to Snow Leopard. I do not particularly like how Apple removed the transcoding features to export video from one format to another in QuickTime X that was available to QuickTime 7 Pro users (actually reinstalled QuickTime 7 Pro on my new MacBook Pro so I can still use that despite QuickTime X being installed) but like Expose integrated with the Dock Menu that's new in Snow Leopard and features like Cover Flow built into the Finder (available also in Leopard along with Spaces) so if I update the Mac Mini should I update to Snow Leopard or Leopard?
This is a 2nd generation Mac Mini (the 1st generation had PowerPC chips) with Mac OS X Tiger and I've heard some negative news about upgrading Mac Mini to Snow Leopard so I want to get some more feedback on whether or not its worth it. The Mac Mini came with iLife and iWork 06 versions but updated iWork to iWork 08 Family Pack. Still have iLife 06 though and am still running iTunes 8.2.1 on the Mac Mini.
I use this computer as my main system for syncing with iPods (I have a 5th gen video iPod and a 2nd gen iPod Touch that I sync with the iTunes Library on my Mac Mini which includes videos purchased earlier from iTunes Store and music purchases as well as TV purchases) so don't want to risk messing up the system with a Snow Leopard update if it is going to cause problems doing so. If Snow Leopard is not good for the Mac Mini will just update to Leopard and stick with Mac OS 10.5 Leopard on this system.I upgraded my mac mini 1.5GHz core solo to a Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz in order to run most of SL's 64 bit stuff. I bought a pulled Core 2 Duo from ebay for $29 and it took about 1.5 hours to do the switch.
The main downside with the 2nd gen Mac Mini is the kernel cannot run in 64 bit mode due to a 32 bit controller that cannot be upgraded. Yet, booting into 32 bit kernel is SL's default setting and as you may have read in articles when SL came out, relying on a 32 bit kernel does not slow down use of 64 bit apps. I maxed RAM to this mac mini's 2 Gig limit years ago which is a good thing for you to do too.
I am happy to report the upgraded Mac Mini runs much faster than originally thanks to the 2 gig of RAM and the Core 2 Duo chip. Installing SL made it run faster still and consumption of memory for apps is lower (smaller pipeline requirements with faster CPU), and about 14 GIG of HDD space was recovered since I did not reinstall Xcode tools. I can now encode 1.5 hour long video files that used to take overnight processing time. CPU runs hotter, up to 89ºC, but usually run only about 10º higher on average than before while fan rev's not noticeably more than before between 1500 to 1800.
If you are not comfortable to upgrade the CPU, I think you will still find some benefit to SL for $25. Alternatively you could sell your Mac Mini on ebay (these 2nd gen model are popular for those want to do the upgrade) and use the proceeds to buy a refurbished current gen Mac Mini. -

AFAIK, there's no app that'll clone the Mac and PC volumes so you can restore them. System Image Utility.app or Deploy Studio for Mac and Ghost for PC are needed. See these for starters:

I'm running OS 10.4 and purchased Mac Box Set with Snow Leopard. When I run the Snow Leo install it errors saying I need OS 10.5 to run the install. How do I get around this? I've read that it's possible to go direcectly from 10.4 to 10.6.

It is retail disk, i bought it in apple store. I also resetter PRRAM and SMC and checked disk. I also tried clean installation and upgrade, nothing works, after run installation program after few seconds wrote: OS X Snow Leopard cannot be install on this machine :-(
