VPN Connection assistant (VPNUK via OpenVPN) cannot change network connection

I have an issue with using my VPN assistant via VPNUK.net.
The connection assistant will update the VPN connection with a new server IP and connection configuration based on what you select in the application.
There is no error specifically about the settings, but when trying to establish a connection im told that the connection failed. I then manually check the VPN in network connections and the new settings are not applied.
I suspect that the application does not have access to change the network settings, even if i run as administrator.
Are there any other privileges i need to set? Only a problem in windows 10.
Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark,
My name is Adam and I am with the Windows Beta Networking support team. I would recommend running procmon (click
here
for download link) when reproducing the behavior. You can then filter on the VPNUK process and scan for any status results such as Access Denied.
Do you get any error messages or warnings logged in event viewer at all?
Have you also engaged with VPNUK to see if they have seen issues with their client when installed on Windows 10 Preview?

  • Cannot connect to wifi, cannot change network settings [SOLVED]

    Asus EeePC.
    lspci -k shows
Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 adapter is the hardware, and appears to be working. Kernel driver in use is bcma-pci-bridge
In Gnome, Wi-Fi status shows "not connected"
"Select Network" shows a list of available APs, I click on ours which is set up as WPA2 PSK. Click Connect. Nothing happens. At all, no dialog for password, no attempt to connect seems to be processed by the computer. This happens with open networks as well (coffee shop or whatever). Click connect but nothing further happens.
From the applet I can't even seem to be able to "Turn off" the WiFi at all.
From within Wi-Fi settings in the applet, I can see a list of available access points but clicking on them does nothing. There is no available way for any user input, although I can click the toggle to turn off Wi-Fi from within there.
I can't forget networks in my history here either: click "History" and I can see a long list of previous networks. I can check box for them all and say "forget" but then they're back when I open the history again.
So it seems like my NetworkManager is just simply not working. Can't change the current state of "not connected" to anything at all.
When I attempt to connect using Wifi-menu I get:
    Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant
    >WPA Authentication/Association Failed {FAIL}
When I attempt to connect to any network. It never asks for password.
    Gnome-Keyring is installed.
    Netctl is NOT installed.
NetworkManager is installed and running according to systemctl
I've been running this Arch install on this machine for two years. This is not a new install problem. No hardware can be changed on this machine, so it's not hardware related (unless the wireless device itself crapped out).
Possibly related, I cannot shutdown the machine from within Gnome. I have to "sudo shutdown -h now" from a terminal. Seems to hibernate/sleep properly when the lid is closed though.
All of the results of searching on this indicate usually the problem is multiple network config softwares installed at the same time, like netctl and networkmanager together. Or not having a keyring manager installed That is not the case here unless it is one of those that is broken, but they don't seem to be.
I have no access to any wired connection at the moment at all, so I can't download anything to this computer at the moment. There's gotta be a way to get wifi working again, as it was just working last week. Haven't even done a pacman upgrade between when it last worked and when it stopped working.

I did mention the hardware is a Broadcom BCM4313
It may have been an issue with the Broadcom not working with iw. Not sure, as I haven't really changed things on this machine much (it's my wife's and I regularly update it but don't fuss with it much beyond "get it to work"). Like I said, the install is 2 years old, so compatibility may have even changed since I initially set it up.
I'm currently at work and without direct access to the computer in question. So I'll get those results later tonight.

  • Problem about allow Managed User change Network setting.

I'm IT Support of school. We have over 200 MacBook with 10.4 and 10.5 OS.
Each student can loan MacBook from our school back to home use.
We have two local accounts on both 10.4 and 10.5.
One is admin user for IT Support use.
Another one is "Managed" student account with Parental Control.
The problem is we setup all MacBook connect with our school wireless but most student in home maybe have different broadband network setting....something maybe wireless, PPPoE, DHCP......etc.
We tested even in 10.4 or 10.5 "Managed" accounts also cannot change Network settting or "Locations Profile"....
Any idea can help me solve this problem?
    Thanks....

As the administrator you can set up multiple locations. Managed users can change their location under the Apple menu -> Location. An admin password is not needed to change the location. Is this not working for you?

  • Cannot logon via VPN connection using an ICS server

At home I have a small network set up, using a central PC A on which Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is enabled (IP address 192.168.0.1 is allocated to this PC). PC B, having VPN client V4.0.x loaded, is connected to PC A. ICS dynamically attributes an IP address 192.168.0.n to PC B. Although a VPN connection (via IP address 194.79.185.227) can be created with a server at the office over the internet, it is impossible to perform a Windows logon and map for example a drive. When using a direct internet link via a telephone modem, it is possible to logon on the office server via the VPN connection.
I have the impression the Cisco firewall inhibits the logon, because of a IP address conflict. When looking into the "Status/Statistics/Route details" window of the VPN client, I notice the secured route 173.19.31.0 is available during the VPN connection. Using the direct telephone line it is possible to ping this address. On the same PC this is impossible, when the ICS server (PC A) is used for the internet communication. The server I am trying to reach at the office has IP address 173.19.31.1.
On the Cisco web site, I found out, that such a configuration should work. Which settings are important with this respect?

I have never found a version of ICS that works with VPN.

  • Window 8.1 system unable to access network shares via VPN connection

Is there something inherent to Windows 8.1 that prevents it from accessing shares on a domain?
I know that it cannot join a domain, but does that also mean that it cannot access shares which are on a domain?
My problem is that I have several user that are running windows 8.1 that are connecting to our network via a VPN.
The users have domain accounts but their computers as windows 8.1 cannot joined to the domain.
So to access network shares they have to use their domain credentials to create a VPN connection.
Once connected the user can RDP to systems on the domain using their domain accounts, so I know that their user names/passwords and permissions are correct. They can access these systems using the computer name, so I don't feel that I have a DNS issue.
They can see the shares on our file server, but when they try to access their departments shared file, they receive an access denied message. There are a few shares that are completely wide open, shared to all users and all departments but they cannot access
    those shares either.
You can ping the file server, from the the client when they are connected to the VPN but you just cannot access any of the shares.
    So...
I am thinking that it has something to do with windows 8.1 and not being able to join a domain, but I cannot find anything to explicitly support this thought.
Other users running a variety different OS (windows 7, OSX, Linux) can all access the shares without any problems via the VPN, so I am a little stumped.

I have done some more testing and oddly enough I can map a drive if I use the IPaddress, but not the computer name, when checking the check box "connect using different credentials"and providing they users domain credentials.
This seems to point to a DNS issue, one would think, but I can hit the file share server by name \\fileserver.dev.lan
I can see all the shares, so dns seems to be fine right?
So I don't understand why I can map a drive using do the IPaddress and not the machine name, but yet I can see and ping the server by name?
When I try to create a mapped drive by machine name I receive the following message:
    Windows cannot access \\fileserver.dev.lan\all
You do not have permissions to access \\fileserver.dev.lan. contact your network administrator  to request access.
But if I use the \\x.x.x.x\all using the very same user and password I get connected with no problem.
This only seems to happen on windows 8.1, which leads me to think that has something to do with OS.
I am thinking about upgrading to windows 8.1 pro, but I don't want to go though the hassle and expanse is the OS is not the problem.

  • VPN Connection Seen As Public Network In Windows 8.1 & No Way To Change It?

    Hello,
I have a perfectly working VPN setup in Windows 7 however since I have got a Windows 8 computer and subsequently upgraded it to 8.1 when I connect to the VPN it assigns the connection as Public and I cannot view any of the network shares.
As I understand it, in Windows 8 you could go into the network section of Change PC Settings, right click over the VPN and enable sharing which would convert the public network type to private however there is no longer this option to enable sharing in 8.1
So I'm left with having to disable the public firewall and then connect to the VPN where it works perfectly but is a bit of a pain.
I'm hoping someone can help me to change the network type of the VPN connection from Public to Private, unfortunately the laptop runs Windows 8.1 Home Premium so I do not have access to gpedit.msc
    Hope someone can help.
    Regards,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
Based on my knowledge, we can use the following method to change the network type of connection from Public to Private.
Set Network to be Private in Windows 8 and 8.1 in Registry
1.Press Win + R keys to open the Run dialog, type regedit, and press Enter.
2.In Registry Editor, navigate to the location below:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles
3.Expand Profiles, click on each long GUID number subkey, and look at its PofileName string value in the right pane to see if it has the current network name (ex: Network) until found.
4.When you find the correct PofileName for your network name, double click/tap on the Category DWORD value in the same right pane to modify it.
5.Type in a new Data value number for the network location you want, and click/tap on OK.
    Network location      Data value
    Public                                0
    Private                             1
    Domain                            2
6.When finished, please reboot your computer.
    Hope this helps.

  • Cannot establish a VPN connection in Lion

I have followed the instructions in this support article but cannot create a VPN connection:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/9010.html
I've tried the steps outlined in this article, and successfully completed everything but still cannot create a VPN connection:
    http://anders.com/guides/native-cisco-vpn-on-mac-os-x/
I have all the correct credentials for my VPN network (vpn address, group name, shared secret). I always receive a server time out error.
I am able to successfully connect to my work VPN using the Cisco VPNClient. But unfortunately it only runs in 32-bit mode. I prefer to boot in 64-bit mode and would prefer not to reboot everytime I want to establish a VPN connection.
I have been working on this issues for three days straight and am getting nowhere. My work is an unsupported IT environment, and the IT support subscription service we use will not handle any Mac issues.

Hmm, no changes. Still the same issue. I deleted the files described, rebooted and reconfigured the network.
hmm, Finder still remembers his old server connection settings, maybe i should delete those, too. Any idea where finder stores his server connections?
In my perception the message that no secure connection can be established comes up immediately after sending the connect command. I don't think that there is network traffic, there is no noticeable latency...

  • EA3500 drops VPN connections via wireless

I don't have problems with the computer on other wireless connections with using VPN, so its not the laptop.  If I am connecting just to the internet and not trying to connect to the VPN i don't have any issues.   If I connect a CAT5 cable directly to the laptop I don't have any issues.  If I try to connect via the wireless the VPN will connect and then drop, usually every 30 to 60 seconds.  I have looked at the settings and can't see any that would make a difference.   Any suggestions on what might be happening and what I need to change on the settings?
    thanks

Maybe the wireless connection is not enough to handle wireless VPN connection. Try adjusting the wireless settings to improve the signal. Change the wireless channel under the 2.4 GHz to 6, 9, 11, and 1. And use 161 or 157 for the 5 GHz band.

  • Cannot sustain VPN connection

I need to work from home 2-3 days a week and moved to Infinity just before Xmas - now I can't sustain a VPN connection, over either wireless or wired ethernet connection.
The connection is made fine, first time, but drops after usually a minute or 2, and after that will not reconnect without a PC reboot (and sometimes not even then.)  From the VPN client (Cisco) error messages the client is unable to resolve any of the four VPN gateways that are available.
If I use a mobile dongle to connect the PC to the internet, the VPN stays up - but is too slow to be workable (and expensive) -  but that to me rules out any client/PC issues.
I've been through this forum quite extensively and this looks like the problem with "BT Web Address Help" that many others have had - but I can confirm that I have opted-out of this service at least a week ago now, and there's no change in the way VPN behaves.
Please can someone assist on this as I'm unable to do my job without home VPN access - this is making me do an extra two 80 mile round trips each week to connect to the corporate network.

Changing the PC's MTU value might help, or even changing your DSL Router?

The Homehub2 often doesn't like transferring large files especially if fragmented, which is more likely when using VPN.

    Hi,
I don't want to sound sarcastic but why didn't you try moving to the NetworkManager utility, I remember well that (yeah it's a Shitian) back in Backtrack 5 and even the fourth connexions were managed by wicd and always caused troubles at some point. NetworkManager handles very well VPN connections without problems and still allows you to make advances configurations. Maybe you should consider trying it in your Virtual Box and post results. Sometimes thiking easy avoids headaches and lets you relax.
On the other hand, it is true that router's "PPTP & VPN passthrough" option can cause troubles when using VPNs, and catalin's solution might be the best, but unless you absolutely need to use wicd (I can't think of a reason right now), you should consider easing things up with NetworkManager. Again just my belief.
Are you trying to connect a VPN or create a VPN connection betweed two points ?
    Hope this helps.

  • Setup router to router VPN connecting 2 windows domain networks via 2 RV042 routers

I am using 2 RV042 routers.  I have created a point to point VPN with Remote Security Group Type= Subnet, using the default IPSec settings.
Under advanced settings-  Aggressive Mode, Keep Alive enabled.
    Location A- SBS 2011 standard, Servername=SBSServer, Domainname = Smallbusiness.Local, IP address 10.1.10.50
DHCP range 10.1.10.100 to 10.1.10.175.  DNS and Print services. No WINS.
    Location B- Server 2008 R2, Sername=SBSServer, Domain name=Smallbusiness.Local, IP address 192.168.10.50
DHCP range 192.168.10.100 to 192.168.10.175,  DNS, Print Services and Remote Desktop Services.  No WINS
I am wondering 2 things.  Can I setup the VPN tunnel to route traffice between the 2 networks without changing the server names.  Leaving the servernames the same.  I have it setup that way but also had netbios broadcast enable.  If I disable netbios broadcast will that be enough for these networks to be independent of each other.  I was hoping not to have to rename the domain and there are advantages to having the same user and domain name when mapping drives between networks.  I have not needed to authenticate those drives or provide credititals for printing either.
    2) Should I change the domain name so that each network has a unique domain name or, if I change the servername of the 2008 R2 server will that essentially solve my network issues, the primary issue being that location b has clients that occasionally can not find the 2008 R2 domain controller.  After a restart the usually resolve to the correct domain controller.
Essentially what I am asking is what are the best practices to connect 2 separate Windows domain networks via a VPN and have those networks capable of file sharing to the each others domain server and printing to the network printers at both loations.
Should I have separate domain names-
Should I have separate server and computer names-

"reserved not zero on payload" generally means your pre-shared keys don't match. Try removing the "crypto isakmp key ...." line and retyping it in again on both sides. In particular DON'T cut/paste it from one router config into another, this quite often puts a space character onto the end of the key, which the router interprets as part of the key and they therefore don't match.

  • Copy from AFP share to AFP share (via VPN-Connection) - stupid?

    Hi there
We set up an OS X server in a remote facility and are connecting to it over a VPN connection (Netgear Firewall).
Everything works fine, there's only one annoying issue: if I want to copy a file from a mounted AFP share (share1) to another mounted AFP share (share2) - both of them residing on the same server - it seems to me that the files are being copied first to my local client and then back to the server again - instead of being copied directly from and to the server...
Is there anything I can do about this issue or am I wrong? Is this a so called "feature" of the Finder itself?
Thanks for any suggestions and regards
    Roman

Thanks for your thoughts about higher vs. lower latency networking - I totally agree. It might be a quite uncommon setup; as the server is being "housed" in a datacenter with quite tough restrictions: not only do they charge us for the power consumption, but also for the traffic being generated - which is 250 GB a month. They're providing an uplink with 10mbps (guaranteed), burstable to 100mbits.
Anyway, we're interested in keeping traffic low - hard to do if we cannot let end users do "common" tasks like moving files from one folder to another (of course, its a sharepoint - but they don't care).
What I'm looking for? Well, I think it will take hours to find out which part of the setup (AFP implementation of the server, AFP on the local machines, either of them on a particular version, the Finder in general...) actually might be responsible for this behavior. And maybe there's a "solution" (if you agree that this is actually a problem" buried somewhere

  • VPN connects when on LAN but not via WAN

    Hi Guys,
I've recently configured a VPN on my SLS. I uses the following settings:
    L2TP over IPsec
    PPP Authentication: Directory Services: MS-CHAPv2
    Shared Secret: xxxxxxxxx
    Client Information:
DNS Servers: 10.0.1.250 (my server) 10.0.1.1 (my airport extreme) - This is where I think I'm going wrong
In my SLS firewall I've open every possible port for both L2TP, PPTP and all required directory authentication ports I believe. If there are any tricky ones please let me know
I am able to successfully connect to the VPN and route all traffic to the delegated IP when on my local network. However when ever I'm away from that network - friends, work, and various other tested internet connections - I am unable to connect to the VPN.
I've ruled out the SLS firewall by turning it of for several days and trying to connect at several locations. I've checked the log on the VPN and there is no record of even an attempt to connect.
In Security of Server Preferences i have exposed the VPN on the airport extreme. I've tried both with and without port forwarding. As far as i know (correct me if I'm wrong) because I have my domain name resolving to my server then I don't need port forwarding. My DNS works for all other services on the SLS.
Any ideas at to what I might be doing wrong? Things I could try to isolate the problem?
Any suggestions would be very handy!

Your Airport Extreme does not contain a DNS server.
Ensure MobileMe is disabled at your Airport. That messes up VPN pass-through.
From a remote network, confirm that all of the necessary ports are open via nmap or Applications > Utilities > Network Utility or other tools.
Quadruple-check the list of ports (and preferably with a second and third technical resource), as the Apple documentation around L2TP port pass-through with Airport and Time Capsule is murky.
Ensure that you don't have the same subnet on both ends of the VPN connection as that can interfere with IP routing.
Also try testing with PPTP, in place of L2TP.
I'm in the midst of tussling with a recalcitrant VPN router myself, but that's another topic.

  • "Back to My Mac is turned on, your VPN connection cannot be established"?

    Hi,
I searched for this recurring notice that I am getting " Because Back to My Mac is turned on, your VPN connection cannot be established", and came up with this thread: http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8436720
However, I am not trying to establish a VPN when I get this message (and don't have one AFAIK).
Any idea what might be causing this message? I can't seem to figure out what triggers it, it just seems to pop up every hour or so. iChat is the only thing I have been using recently that seems to
Is there any way to discover what VPNs my laptop has set up? I don't have any additional software that is specific to VPNs, so it would have to be something already built into the OS. Does the Transmission application create a VPN? That is the only thing I can think of.
Any other ideas on what might be causing this message?
    Your help is appreciated!
    A.

If you have a VPN installed (by mistake?) you should be able to go to your System Prefs > Network and see the VPN listed in the left hand column along with Aiport and Ethernet. You can un-install by using the minus button at the bottom of the column.
The link provided shows you how to install a VPN client with screen shots, including one of this Network Prefs screen and what a VPN client looks like.
