VPN connection drops after 1 minute or less

Hi All,
not sure if this is a server-side or client-side issue. Trying to establish a VPN connection from an MBP to my Mac Mini server (L2TP over IPSec, Shared Secret w/ Password authentication) I manage to connect, authenticate and establish a connection. However, after about 45-60 seconds I see no more traffic (from the remote LAN) coming through to the MBP. The status indicator still shows that the tunnel is up but I just don't get any further response from the server. I can still get to the web, however, the traceroute seems to indicate that this traffic is flowing outside the VPN tunnel (whether the "Send all traffic over VPN connection" option on the MBP is selected or not).
I've tried this with all combinations of 10.6.5 and 10.6.6 to no avail. It is possible to keep the tunnel alive just a little longer if I keep a ping to the server going on the MBP, but this eventually gets lost as well.
I've determined that there are some changes in the routing tables on the MBP whilst this is going on:

The MBP is connected via WiFi to a router which gives it 10.149.18.96. The remote network is on 192.168.1.0/24. The VPN server (as well as the DNS and DHCP server) are on machine 192.168.1.180 (the Mac Mini).
Neither the MBP nor the server logs really contain anything useful which would indicate why this is failing.
It looks as though this issue has been there for quite a long time in some form:

This is incredibly frustrating and I cannot understand while Apple has not done anything about this. Is there anyone here that is having the same problem and has possibly made some headway on this? Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!
Thanks.
Mark

First guess would be a faulty Openreach VDSL modem (the white box).
Call 0800 111 4567, explain the problem. Be polite but firm and insist on an engineer visit. The engineer will test the line and probably replace the modem.

  • Internet connection drops after 1 minute

Using iPhone 4, version 4.3.3 - I have been using wi-fi connectivity without issue for several months at home and other public locations. Currently having issues at new work location with keeping a persistent internet connection using company wi-fi. After device wakes up, I'm able to browse the internet without problems for 1-2 minutes, then when loading a page, will get the error that Safari can't open the page because no internet connection is available. I still have connectivity to the wi-fi network, and can get email from company Exchange server, but can't get access to anything past the company network.  I don't understand why it will work for a couple of minutes and then lose internet connection.
    Any ideas?

Hello and thank you for the response.  The only way I can get these iMacs to stay connected to the internet is via Static IP.  The previous post states that static doesn't work but I didn't fill out all the fields correctly, like DNS and search domain.
Both Ethernet and Wi-Fi pick up an IP address via DHCP and after a few minutes the IP is dropped then a self-assigned 169 address appear.  With Static IP, we're good to go.
I've tried DHCP with manual address.
Editied the location on network preferences.
I've disabled "use passive FTP mode"
I connected Windows machines to the same network port as these iMacs and there are no issues.
    OSX 10.7
    Thanks again,
    Oz

  • Cisco VPN connection drops on airport extreme on OS X 10.6.7

I recently bought Airport Extreme and I must say the wifi coverage and strength is amazing compared to the DLink or Belkin routers that I tried. THe whole thing setup like in 2 minutes. Love it.
Now the problem. I use CISCO VPN provided by work a lot as I work from home frequently. I have found that the VPN connection drops like in 2-5 minutes of connecting. I looked through the several threads and apple response " to use NAT-T in CISCO VPN preferences". Only thing is that I did not see any NAT setting options in preferences and also I am unable to edit anything in the CISCO VPN pref (probably things locked out by our IT who provided the vpn software).
I also tried someone's suggestion that I switch to manual radio channels in the airport utility config - but that didn't work either.
    Any suggestions?
I am on OS X 10.6.7 and CISCO VPN CLIENT 4.9.0.1.0180
    URGENT HELP NEEDED

airport is off how can i turn it on?
Click on the AirPort icon in the OS X menu bar. Select "Turn Wi-Fi On" or "Turn AirPort On" as appropriate.
how can i reinstall mac os x 10.6.7?
I would suggest that you start with the Snow Leopard installation disk. You can then update to 10.6.7 from Software Update.

  • Wireless Connection drops after a few moments

    Hello everbody!
Background: I have a cheap laptop with a windows only ACPI module, so I have to set acpi=off at all times anyway. I tried Ubuntu, which has the wireless problem too, but instead of repairing something bloated like Ubuntu, I now found my way to Arch to make it right from the beginning.
If the wireless problem gets solved, I want to go on installing the nvdia driver, maybe configure xmonad. (I want to try KDE4 for fun too though, eyecandy you know ) Simple working desktop without getting my laptop heated up like windows does.
The problem: I set up my wireless connection like the wiki says:
-The original SSID was "FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7270 Annex A" which I tried to escape with \ and using 'ssid'. This wouldn't work at all, if you have any explanation for that I'd love to know it. I changed the SSID to something without spaces and special characters and the connection would work. But it would be nice to change it back to the original.
-So it works now. Fine, I thought. But the connection drops after a few moments and I have to "killall wpa_supplicant dhcpcd" and start them again to make it work again. For a few moments only. So I went through the logfiles and found error messages which Google wouldn't help me solve on my own. Now I'm asking the Arch specialists here
Note: Using the partedmagic livecd, the wireless connection works out of the box and absolutely stable. I believe even a bit faster than under windows. So it has to work perfectly, I just don't know how to make it in Arch yet.

Thanks in advance to anyone helping me! I really really want to get Arch going. It's ideal for this laptop, no wasting of disk space, ressource friendly, the temperature doesn't go up as much with less cpu usage I guess..
I've written quite a bit, but hopefully this makes it easier for you to help me! I've included all I thought which could be useful.
    Greetings from Germany,
    Fenris

The easiest solution might be to setup NetCfg somehow with your wifi card and access point.  Have you tried that?  Can you find your card's chipset on the wiki?(chances are that your particular chipset will need a firmware put into /lib/firmware.  Again that's found on the wiki on the NetCfg or Wifi page, I forget which sorry.)  Those are two places where I'd look for good information.
By the way, your rc.conf is way out of date.  You should look at updating it by using the recent rc.conf.pacnew file that you'll find in the /etc directory.

Did you try upgrading them to the latest (1 week ago released) firmware update 1.1.0.4?

I understand that the OP failed to do research. But then, I wasn't replying to the OP. I was replying to Chris. I have Verizon. I can talk and use data at the same time with my Droid Maxx. Therefore, the problem is not just with the network. It would be technically possible for an iPhone to do that on Verizon/Sprint if Apple had chosen to use a different chip, such as the kind other phone manufacturers have elected to use.
Of course, this is probably all irrelevant to the OP's issue. It was merely a point of clarification, especially for those people who are used to being able to use both voice and data at the same time on Verizon. When they switch to an iPhone, they are often surprized at the limitation.
    Best of luck.

  • Has anyone experienced wi-fi connection dropping after upgrading to Lion?

My MacBook which still runs Snow Leopard is working fine while the iMac which has been upgraded to Lion looses wi-fi connection every couple of minutes.
Both machines use the same netowrk and are roughly the same distance from the router...

I have been on the phone with APPLE CARE this morning and they were very helpful and enabled me to fix my wifi issues.
Before speaking with APPLE CARE I tried so many of the unusual little tricks on this board (and others) which seemed to be working uniquely for certain people. It turns out the problem in my case isn't LION as such, or my WiFi rather it's to do with the SECURITY on my ROUTER.
I had an old MacBook at home which was very useful as I was easily able to make the adjusments on my Router through this to then later allow my new iMac (LION) to log on etc.
I'm using a NETGEAR router, but the procedure will be much the same for other routers etc.
What I did was sign in to my router (on my older MacBook in my case):
    http://192.168.0.1
Put it my USERNAME and PASSWORD (which, by the way, is usually:
    USERNAME: admin
    PASSWORD: password
    Then selected WIRELESS SETTINGS.
Within WIRELESS SETTINGS there is a subheading entitled WIRELESS SECURITY.
Within WIRELESS SECURITY there are four options:
    1) Disable
    2) WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
    3) WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)
    4) WPA-802.1x
    I had
    2) WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
!! THIS WAS THE PROBLEM !!
    According to APPLE:
WEP is being used less frequently as it appears to be not as SECURE as it's contemporaries (namely WPA etc). As a result LION struggles to communicate with the router using this security. BUT the good news is it CAN be easily changed!
For a home setup Option 3:
    3) WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)
Seems to be the best option. Option 4 is a for a bigger setup (I wasn't listening too much, but apparently it's more suited to businesses using their own servers/networks etc?!).
    Next things we did was:
    SELECT OPTION 3:
    3) WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)
After selecting it asked me to enter a new password, so I did.
Then I selected APPLY (or SAVE depending on your router). It took a minute to load...
Then I went on to my new iMac (LION) clicked on
SYSTEM PREF > NETWORK > ADVANCED and REMOVED (pressing the negative / '-' symbol) the network I've been struggling to get on for the last two days.
Then ADDED (pressing the positive / '+' symbol) a 'new' network giving it the same title obviously as the one I had just deleted. It'll ask what SECURITY you want of the options, but just leave it as 'None' (as your WiFi will work it out itself). After this press ADD, then OK in the next window. Lastly press 'APPLY'.
After this -  go up to your WiFi putton on your top bar, click it, then select the new network you've just created (which will of course have the same name as your old one) then when asked for a password put in your NEW ONE as you created on your ROUTER...
    ...Alas IT SHOULD WORK!
It did for me, and the chap on the phone was so very useful and said this will be in the info they'll be putting on the discussion boards ASAP. I'm sorry if ym explanation has been a ittle convoluted as I'm not a techy person, but wanted to share this after sharing the struggle with so many.
    Good luck!

  • Lenovo A--730 wifi drops after five minutes, reappears on disconnct/reconnect

I have a lenovo A-730 tab and I have been facing issues with my wifi.
Here are the details of my tab:-
    Model number - LenovoA3300-GV
For the first five minutes, it works like a charm, then the connectivity goes away. Though, the wifi signal strength shows full.
Again, if I turn wifi off and again on, it works for another five minutes again and then stops working.
    This is a consistent issue.
Somehow, it seems I am missing some settings or some software issue.
Please guide me in this regard to get this issue of mine fixed.

    Hi,
I tired the steps given in this link.
    http://www.xda-developers.com/kitkat-wifi-drop-fix/
    The steps are:-
1- goto Settings > WiFi settings
    2- long-press on Connection
    3- Select "Modify network config"
4- check the "Show advanced options" tick.
5- select proxy settings to Manual
6- proxy host name , input the value from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.225
    7- Proxy port = input one of them "8080" , "3128" , "80"
    8- press the "Save".
9- turn wifi off and the On, you will not see the message ""Sign into Wi-Fi network"
    10-now repeat the steps from 1 ~ 4
11- and revert back the proxy settings to "None", its Done.
12- you will be fine with this network.
But no luck, after five minutes, the wifi again goes off after five mins and again comes up on doing disconnect/reconnect.
One more thign  did not understand here is as per step 6 to 8, we are changing the proxy and doing the required setting and saving it.
Then, in Step 10, we are reverting it back to the original state as we are setting proxy to none again.
Will it solve the purpose or am I missing something.
My issue is still not fixed

  • Wireless connection drops after bout 5 min - HP all in one C6180

    Hi!
I'm having problem with my all in one product - HP all in one C6180. The wireless network connection drops, and the printer becomes unreachable from both web-interface and printjobs/scanningjobs etc...
This problem has existed since I bought this machine..
I've tried several different setups when it comes to WEP/WPA/WPA2 etc..and also different channels on the wireless, but still same problem exist. The printer works perfect for about 5 min, but then drops the connection it seems like. I'm having about 5-6 devices connected to my wireless router (Draytek VGI 2910), and all seems to work perfect together except the C6180.
At this moment I'm running WPA2 for security on my network. I've tested the software both on Win/ Mac, and currently running the Mac-version.
Is there any firmware-update out that could solve my problem, or how else should I manage it to work properly?
    Thanks for any help!
    /V

There does not appear to be any firmware update on this page.  It could be a router issue.
Let's set a static IP address for the printer:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you do not know the range, set a high IP address, like .250
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (ends with .1) for the gateway and first DNS. Leave the second one blank.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Wireless connection drops after time. Please assist.

    Hi
My problem is that my wireless connection drops every 5-15 minutes.
I don't know all the relevant info to give.  If there's something I can post that will help let me know and I'll reply.
I've used netcfg to configure my network.  I have a Canyon CN-WF511 wireless card.
I load the following 3 modules in my rc.conf;  rt2500pci rt2x00lib rt2x00pci.  I think those are the only ones pertaining to my network card.
When it drops I just netcfg -a then netcfg default (profile name) and it works for another few minutes.
    Below is my network profile.
    CONNECTION="wireless"
    INTERFACE=wlan0
    #IP="dhcp"
    #DHCP_TIMEOUT=20
    IP="static"
    IFOPTS="192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"
    GATEWAY=192.168.0.1
    #DOMAIN=localdomain
    #DNS1=192.168.0.1
    ESSID=default
    SECURITY=none
    SCAN="YES"
    TIMEOUT=15

  • Dial tone continues after call is answered then call drops after 1 minutes

This morning I have had problems with calling skype contacts.  After I initiate the call the person on the other end picks up but the dail tone is still in the background.  After a minute or so the dial tone go to busy and the entire call drops.

I downloaded new version of Skype and it works. Strange that it didn't auto update since 6.21 even thought auto update was on. Now it is 6.22.

  • Cisco UC560 Not Clearing Static Routes When VPN Connections Drop

We have a Cisco UC560 (UC560-FXO-K9) running "Cisco IOS Software, UC500 Software (UC500-ADVIPSERVICESK9-M),
Version 15.1(2)T2, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)"  The issue is when we have end users connecting with the Cisco VPN Client to this device sometimes we are unable to connect to any devices on our LAN or sometimes we can't connect to the LAN on the other end of our site-to-site VPN.  The one symptom I've observed when this happens is that old VPN sessions that have disconnected appear to leave static routes from the user's outside IP at their home to an IP on our LAN to a Virtual-Access interface.  When this starts to happen, I restart the firewall to clear out the stale static routes and the problem is fixed, for a while at least.  Below is the current state where we have the site-to-site VPN connected to our branch office and 2 user's connected with Cisco VPN clients.  Below that is the static route table which has 5 total Virtual-Access interface routes (one is an extra route for a user currently connected so that their outside IP is in the static route table with 2 inside IP's associated.)  Is there a way to fix the cleanup of VPN connections when they terminate?

    Hi Brian,
This sounds like you are running into the following known issue:
CSCtl03682 - EzVPN client: Several RRI routes  pointing to same virtual interface
    which is Dup'd to:
CSCtf39056 - RRI routes not deleted
This is fixed since 15.1(2)T4, so I would recommend upgrading to SWP 8.2 or higher.  The only other way to clean up the stuck routes is to reload the router.
    Thanks,
    Brandon
