VPN Connection Seen As Public Network In Windows 8.1 & No Way To Change It?

Hello,
I have a perfectly working VPN setup in Windows 7 however since I have got a Windows 8 computer and subsequently upgraded it to 8.1 when I connect to the VPN it assigns the connection as Public and I cannot view any of the network shares.
As I understand it, in Windows 8 you could go into the network section of Change PC Settings, right click over the VPN and enable sharing which would convert the public network type to private however there is no longer this option to enable sharing in 8.1
So I'm left with having to disable the public firewall and then connect to the VPN where it works perfectly but is a bit of a pain.
I'm hoping someone can help me to change the network type of the VPN connection from Public to Private, unfortunately the laptop runs Windows 8.1 Home Premium so I do not have access to gpedit.msc
Hope someone can help.
Regards,
Mike

Hi Mike,
Based on my knowledge, we can use the following method to change the network type of connection from Public to Private.
Set Network to be Private in Windows 8 and 8.1 in Registry
1.Press Win + R keys to open the Run dialog, type regedit, and press Enter.
2.In Registry Editor, navigate to the location below:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles
3.Expand Profiles, click on each long GUID number subkey, and look at its PofileName string value in the right pane to see if it has the current network name (ex: Network) until found.
4.When you find the correct PofileName for your network name, double click/tap on the Category DWORD value in the same right pane to modify it.
5.Type in a new Data value number for the network location you want, and click/tap on OK.
Network location      Data value
Public                                0
Private                             1
Domain                            2
6.When finished, please reboot your computer.
Hope this helps.

  • Use VPN connection as a listen network interface in Web Application proxy

I have a test environment: domain in hyper-v with Sharepoint and Office Web Apps servers (all under Windows 2012 - Windows 2012 R2).
Because my home ISP does not permit some inbound ports (80,443) in a gate machine (under Windows 2012 R2) I create a vpn connection (by "setup a new connection or network") to my outside vpn server. On this vpn server the ports forwarding is configured
and work fine (f.e. default IIS site is visible).
I try to public my Sharepoint 2013 Foundation in Internet over this vpn connection and faced with the problem - WAPx (Web application proxy) does not bind to this vpn connection, only to traditional network interfaces.
The question is how to make listening WAPx the VPN interface?

  • VPN connections: impossible to ping network's machines

    Hello,
I have configured a Cisco 857 device. I can connect to the internet. I can also establish VPN connections remotely.
However, once I have established a VPN connection, I cannot ping any system on the company LAN.
I have seen several posts on these forums but I couldn't configure properly my router.
I attach my config. Is it possible to know what corrections I should do?
My LAN IPs are 10.0.0.x with a subnet mask 255.0.0.0.
For my remote clients, I have now configured it to use 255.0.1.x.
    Thanks and regards,
    MaC

I can see in your configuration that you use
    split-tunneling, which is fine.
However, I think you need add the following
line in the configuration so that your router
will NOT NAT traffics when going from 10.0.0.0/8 to 255.0.1.x/24:
    no access-list 120
    access-list 120 remark SDM_ACL Category=18
    access-list 120 deny ip 10.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255
    access-list 120 deny ip 10.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 255.0.1.0 0.0.0.255
    access-list 120 permit ip 10.0.0.0 0.0.0.255 any
That way, the traffics from 10.0.0.0/8 will not be NATted when going to
    255.0.1.0/24 for the VPN.

  • C410 Wireless Printer keeps loosing its connection to my wireless network in Windows 7

HP C410 Photosmart all-in-one wireless printer
on a HP pavilion p6000 Desk top running Windows 7, with all the latest updates
Every 3 or 4 weeks, the printer has to be reinstalled or I connect to the router with an either net cable,
Currently the Desk Top can not find the printer on the net work, I have disabled the firewall, The printer is connected to the net work but I can't print thru the net work. I fixed the issue by using a trouble shooter that said I was missing a driver, but now I can't find the trouble shooter, and the HP trouble shooter is little to no help. I have used HPHNDU, which can't find the printer, but it can find the network, I have also tried HPPIW, and it is of no help. Lastly I have used the HP printer install Wizard and it has me deleting the printer and then it can't find the priner so you click the next button and you delete the printer again, ...
Any assistance will be much appreciated, cause it is now a wired printer.

ITried all the suggestions and downloads and I still have toconnect thru a wire. When the Desktop is performing the Network discovery and check, it says it can't find the Printer on the net work, yet the Network test report  has passes in all the categories and the signal strength  as excellent, so I guesithastoremain a wired connection. Because the next comment is its windows 7 tha is having the issue. Thanks for the suggestions they did not work...

  • PSE 9 editor window Is there a way to change the appearnace of the window or menu lettering?

In PSE 9 my editor window the window border color is black with gray lettering for the menu.  It's difficult to see.  Can I change the color or perhaps increase the size of the menu font?
    Thanks, Dan...

Yes, hopefully future versions will have another option for menu colors.  Many other programs have the ability to change skins, it can't be that difficult.
I did find the setting to make the background darker but it seems to only make the panel where pictures are viewed lighter or darker.  That doesn't really help with the menus.  I guess I'll just have to work on something else when the sun is too bright.
    Thanks for the repsonses.

    Hello!

  • How do I connect to a Wi-Fi network with Windows 10?

QuestionHow do I connect to a Wi-Fi / wireless network with Windows 10?
AnswerNote: This article describes connecting to wireless networks in Windows 10. Separate articles exists for doing this in Windows 8 and Windows 7.
To connect to a wireless network in Windows 10, follow these simple steps:
Select the wireless icon in the bottom-right near the clock. If you don't see it, you might need to press the up arrow to see more icons.
A panel will open on the right that lists detected wireless networks.
At the bottom of the panel, you'll see buttons for Wi-Fi and Airplane mode.
Ensure Wi-Fi is enabled and Airplane mode is disabled.
Select your wireless network from the list.
You can check the box next to Connect automatically if you prefer.
    Now select Connect.
If it requires a password, it'll prompt you. In that case, enter your credentials and follow the prompts.
You can also watch this video showing how to connect to Wi-Fi with Windows 10:

What are you trying to do the password on .. I have never noticed that it is limited to specific lengths unless you use WEP.. surely you don't use wep.

  • Is there a limit to the number of concurrent L2TP/IPSec VPN connections in Snow Leopard

    Hi,
I'm currently running an L2TP/IPSec service from a Snow Leopard server VM running on the latest version of Lion Server ( Had loads of issues with Lion VPN connectivity from outside our network when I first upgraded the physical server to Lion. quickest way to get the service back was to run an S/L VM. I know that there have been some changes to Lion in the VPN area, but this works... sort of;;;)
I've got an IP address pool of 20 addresses confgured as this is only for ICT staff members. Each user has a local userid/password on the S/L server. For me, things just work.
iPhone, iPad, OS X lion client they all work and I've had about 3 simultaneous connections up and running. However, the majority of staff users use Windows 7 client machines and they're been reporting sporadic connection failures where one moment they can get connected and the next they can't.  I'm currently wondring if there is some concurrent limit setting they are hitting and are getting slung off because I've got other users using the service.  It would be a bit strange if S/L can only support 2 or 3 connections out of the box.
Then again it might be VMWare Fusion (Vsn 4.1.1) thats the problem.
    Any help apppreciated
    Rgds
    Alex

You have to count to have about 30GB at least free on the startup disk, after you have the library loaded.
On the external you have space enough.
As far as I know there is no limit for iPhoto, but I suggest to not let it grow too much, because everything will become sluggish, also making backups. It should be possible to split up in more libraries, one that is really actual and one that is the past. Physical splitting up I mean, not smart collections. You can switch libraries by holding the Alt(option) at startup of iPhoto.

  • Dual Remote VPN Connection

    Hello Guys
i created three different Remote VPN connections with three different networks . i can make them one but for some reasons i don't mix all.
and iam using  Cisco asa 5505 with Shrew Soft VPN software , so my problem is
    - i connected Shrew soft remote vpn , if i try to connected another remote vpn connection this will not accept the second connection , so please can any one give me  a remote vpn connection software that accepts more than one connection

    Hi,
Since you mention the ASA and the VPN I presume you are trying to connect by VPN Client to the same ASA?
Why would you want to have several VPN client connections at the same time? (Though I think that isnt even possible)
What are you trying to accomplish by these 3 different VPN Client configurations configured on the same ASA?
Isnt it just possible to configure one VPN Client connection to the ASA that would handle all the traffic of these 3 VPN Client connections?

  • Connect to one wireless network when multiple networks with the same name

    Hi all,
I'm at a location where there are two networks with the name (e.g.) "wireless". One uses WEP and one uses WPA. The WEP network is weaker than the WPA network, so my Mac tries to connect to the WPA network, even though I have manually setup the wireless network with WEP security (after trying to connect it asks for a WPA password). Is there a way that I can connect to a wireless network by MAC Address, or some way for me to tell the Macbook to ignore the WPA network? The problem is that the SSID is the same, it seems.
    Thanks,
    Nate

The person (the landlord) isn't tech-savvy at all.
    That is clearly obvious as
    1. They would not be using WEP
    2. They would setup a different SSID
WEP is not secure and can be cracked in minutes using tools readily available on the internet. If a hacker gain access to that network they could run other tools and hijack the dns and then you could be visiting sites on your mac that are completely bogus but look real.
Also it is common trick that hackers use is to setup an access point nearby with the sane SSID to capture details from users that join their network thinking they have joined their own network. Again the hacker can hijack the dns and monitor all your browsing and capture details.
The fact that someone has setup an SSID nearby with the same name would make me very suspicious.
I would treat your landlord's network as an untrusted network same as when your using a public wifi like coffebucks.

  • Deskjet Ink Adv. 6525 Invisible to all devices even if connected to the same network

Okey, So a few days ago I got a  new router (new Wifi network). When I connected my printer to it, none of my Apple or Android devices couldn't find my printer, even if they could before I got my new router. I called my new network the same way as my previouse one, and used the same password, but my devices still can't find it.They're all connected to the same network, and no errors are shown on the printer, or on the Wireless network test results. I tryed everything I could find from the FAQs on this site, but I still can't solve the problem. The printer prints and scans normally when it's connected to my computer. Please answer if you have any ideas how to solve my problem!
    Best regards, Marko

    Hi Marko,
Welcome to the HP Support forums.  I understand that since changing your router your mobile devices can’t find your printer and you can only print from your computer with the cable connected.
Please run the Wireless Setup Wizard from the front panel of the printer.  Even though you have used the same network name and password, the new router broadcasts different information that the old router.  So please run the wireless setup wizard from the front panel of the printer.  The instructions on how to do this can be found in your User Guide on page 31 in the section titled “To connect the product with the Wireless Setup Wizard”.
For your computer it sounds like the step to switch the connection from a USB connection to a wireless connection was accidentally missed during the setup.  The instructions on how to make that switch can also be found in your User Guide on page 33in the section titled “Change from a USB connection to a wireless network”. Windows and Mac each have their own sub-section.
For your mobile devices please turn the wi-fi setting off on it.  Please wait approximately 15 seconds to allow the device to truly disconnect from the network.  Please turn the wi-fi setting back on and then choose your network.  It’s possible that the devices still “thought” they were connected to your old network as the name didn’t change.

There's lots more, but it all looks pretty much like the above. Would the OS, or some standard system service or application, be doing this? During the time period covered by the above log entries, as far as I can remember, the only apps I was running were Mail, Safari, and 1Password. I do have some VPN connections defined in the Network panel of System Preferences, but I was NOT using them at the time. Is this normal, or do I have a problem?

I found this today also.  I'm going to turn off Back to my Mac, DropBox and Splashtop Remote and see if that stops it.  Do you run any of these? And tried turning any OFF.

  • EA3500 drops VPN connections via wireless

I don't have problems with the computer on other wireless connections with using VPN, so its not the laptop.  If I am connecting just to the internet and not trying to connect to the VPN i don't have any issues.   If I connect a CAT5 cable directly to the laptop I don't have any issues.  If I try to connect via the wireless the VPN will connect and then drop, usually every 30 to 60 seconds.  I have looked at the settings and can't see any that would make a difference.   Any suggestions on what might be happening and what I need to change on the settings?
    thanks

Maybe the wireless connection is not enough to handle wireless VPN connection. Try adjusting the wireless settings to improve the signal. Change the wireless channel under the 2.4 GHz to 6, 9, 11, and 1. And use 161 or 157 for the 5 GHz band.
