VPN connects but No Ping; AFP; or SMB

Folks;
All Mac's are fully updated Tiger or Tiger Server {running dual NIC's w/ NAT;DNS;DCHP;VPN;AFP;Firewall;Windows;DNS}
I can connect using the client's IntenetConnet L2TP mechanism and the clock ticks away...
But once connected I cannot mount shares or ping.
I have verfied that these shares can be mounted if connected NOT thru the VPN.
I have read a long thread here from last year and based on that have implemented firewall rules for allowing all traffic (TCP & UPD) (In or Out) for ppp* to 19.168.2.0/24 and for 192.168.2.0/24 to ppp* {4 rules total}
I have not made any Network Routing Definitions in the VPN settings
Help Please!
How do you debug this? Where is the best documentation to read on this?
I'm going nuts!
Steve

Start by enabling logging of denied packets in the firewall settings.
Then: what IP are you trying to use to get at the server services (you should use the NATed LAN IP)?
Also the remote client must not be connecting from a network which are using the same IP range as the server LAN.
And VPN client IPs must be part of the LAN IP range.

  • Cisco VPN connects but then no services are available.

    Where to start:
I have a situation where by my remote office, 5 machines, connects to head office via Cisco VPN client.
Recently we have been able to make a vpn connection but once connected we have no services available like connecting to servers, internet, network drives, voip phone or even pinging any of the services. We get an IP address on the virtual network adaptor created by vpn connection but then nothing.
After a hec of amount of troubleshooting I swapped out our router, Draytek Vigor 2820, for another 2820. Same problem. I then took my Draytek Vigor from home, that does work, to the office and it works perfectly fine using the 2600 router in the office. I then tried a dlink router and that worked in office as well. So it has something to do with the 2820 router. It has been working fine for months and now recently, having changed nothing on it, it has stopped working for us with Cisco vpn connection. Does anyone have any clues as to why and what I could do on the router to resolve issue or could it be something on the cisco side that needs changing? I have already updated firmware to latest version on router.
Any help / advice would be great appreciated.
    Regards,
    Ashley

Can you please share the configuration as there might be something that change after the upgrade that might cause the issue.

  • VPN connections: impossible to ping network's machines

    Hello,
I have configured a Cisco 857 device. I can connect to the internet. I can also establish VPN connections remotely.
However, once I have established a VPN connection, I cannot ping any system on the company LAN.
I have seen several posts on these forums but I couldn't configure properly my router.
I attach my config. Is it possible to know what corrections I should do?
My LAN IPs are 10.0.0.x with a subnet mask 255.0.0.0.
For my remote clients, I have now configured it to use 255.0.1.x.
    Thanks and regards,
    MaC

I can see in your configuration that you use
    split-tunneling, which is fine.
However, I think you need add the following
line in the configuration so that your router
will NOT NAT traffics when going from 10.0.0.0/8 to 255.0.1.x/24:
    no access-list 120
    access-list 120 remark SDM_ACL Category=18
    access-list 120 deny ip 10.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255
    access-list 120 deny ip 10.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 255.0.1.0 0.0.0.255
    access-list 120 permit ip 10.0.0.0 0.0.0.255 any
That way, the traffics from 10.0.0.0/8 will not be NATted when going to
    255.0.1.0/24 for the VPN.

  • RV220W IPsec tunnel connected, but no ping is working

    Hello,
I have a problem with my RV220w router and IPsec connections.
The tunnel is connected, but no ping is working. I have not changed any Settings on the Client Site or Router Site. The last succsessful tunnel wit this configuration is a half year ago.
The local and remote network have different ip-address.
I have both firmware versions 1.0.4.17 and 1.0.5.8 tested.
A tunnel over PPTP is working fine. The ping works successful.
    Has anyone an idea?
    kind regards
    Martin Schubert

    At the glance,
First, what are your netmasks for those networks? I suppose they are 255.255.255.0.
Second, check your Remote Security Group and Local Security Group on B and C for their tunnel. Maybe permutation?
Third, check Routing table (Setup->More->Advanced Routing then at the bottom Show Routing Table).
Should be something like - on B:
    10.0.0.0
    255.255.255.0
    GW for B
    10
    ipsec0
    and on C:
    10.0.1.0
    255.255.255.0
    GW  for C
    10
    ipsec0

  • WRT54GC - VPN connects but doesn't connect

I have a WRT54GC. When I use the Netgear ProSafe VP Client in order to connect to my clients network through his Netgear router. The Security Policy appears to be correctly set up because when I try to connect the Netgear client software indicates that I have successfully connected. Also.... on the other side of the connection, behind his Netgear router, the system administrator sees my local, non-routable IP as having connected.
Unfortunately that's as far as it goes because I can't connect with Remote Desktop and can't ping any of the computers on his network. It connects but doesn't allow me to do anything or see any of the computers on his network.
If I by-pass my router and connect directly to the Internet through my cable modem using the Netgear VPN client...everything works fine, evidently there is a problem which resides within the confines of my WRT54GC router.
Anyone have a clue as to what I should do?

I already had those ports open Carrot but today I discovered another clue to my problem. I have two computers here, one with Windows 2003 and the other with XP. For somereason I was able to get it to work witht he XP machine whereas the Windows 2003 machine won't work. As I said a connection IS being made, proof that the ports are opened, I just can't do anything even though both sides of the connection seem to indicate that a connection has been made. I can't ping any computers on the other side of the connection or use Remote Desktop.
My quess is that there is something in the configuration of my Windows 2003 Server machine that is causing the problem. What that might be I don't know.

  • VPN connects but does not function when resuming from sleep

THe VPN on my ibook works fine - it connects and the data goes through. but when i put it to sleep (lid close/power->sleep) and than wake it up VPN connects fine and that's all. data stucks. i disconnect it - all works, pings go and so on. i connect it again, it connects, and pings stop, tracerouting stops and that's it. any ideas?

Whatever you are connected to thinks you are disconnected by the sound of it, or it is confused about the current session and is not allowing traffic. Something in the "sign off" settings on the other may be misconfigured.
You might want to post what you are connecting to (business network, etc). PPTP? L2TP?

  • ASA5520 AnyConnect SSL VPN Connected but unable to ping my inside LAN

Hi there, please forgive if I have missed any forum protocols as this is my first post.
I am trying to configure Anyconnect SSL VPN. I am able to connect to the VPN on a laptop, witch is able to download the anyconnect client from the ASA. I am unable to ping any of my IP's that are on the inside of my ASA. Before posting here I have spent many hours on forums and watching videos on anyconnect SSL VPN creation and I am following it to the T but still no ping. Any help would be very much appreciated.

  • ASA 5505 IPSEC VPN connected but can't access to LAN

    ASA : 8.2.5
    ASDM: 6.4.5
    LAN: 10.1.0.0/22
    VPN Pool: 172.16.10.0/24
Hi, we purcahsed a new ASA 5505 and try to setup IPSEC VPN via ASDM; i just simply run the Wizards, setup vpnpool, split tunnelling, etc.
I can connect to the ASA by using cisco VPN client and internet works fine on the local PC, but it cannot access to the LAN (can't ping. can't remote desktop). I tried the same thing on our Production ASA(those have both Remote VPN and Site-to-site VPN working), the new profile i created worked fine.
Below is my configure, do I mis-configure anything?

I change  a Machine's gateway to this ASA and capture again, now we can see some reply.
All ohter PCs and switches gateway are point to another ASA, maybe that's the reason why i didn't work?
what's the recommanded way to make our LAN to have two 2 gateways(for load balance or backup router, etc)?
add two gateways to all PCs and swtichwes?

I'm able to connect a device and it assigns me an IP address out of the pool, and injects the routes to its local network, but I'm not able to pass any traffic through the VPN and none of the IPSec SA counters increment for the dial-in connection. I've compared the config here to the samples from documentation and I don't know what I'm missing. Config is below.

  • VPN Connects but unable to access internal devices

Thank you in advance for any assistance that can be provided.
I am using AnyConnect to create a VPN with an ASA 5505.  Once connected, the client needs to access a device behind a 1941 router.
Internally, (not using VPN), all my routing is working correctly.  My VPN client can connect and when I put a route on my 1941 router, I am able to ping that particular device.  But my VPN client cannot appear to ping anything else, either the devices on the same internal range as the ASA 5505 or anything past the 1941.
VPN Client                                      ASA 5505                                      Workstation                    1941 Router                        Far Device
    192.168.201.20 ----->   Outside IP x.x.x.x // Internal 192.168.101.1          192.168.101.56        192.168.101.2 // 192.168.8.1          192.168.8.150
Client connects and get IP from ASA
Cannot ping this                                                            Cannot ping this
Can ping internal IP of 1941
                                                                                                                                                *(after creating a static route)
I have been playing around with my configuration extensively to try and make this work.  Split-tunneling is enabled and is required.

ok, lets go on ... ;-)
Split-Tunneling: The ACL must include all networks you want to reach through the VPN:
    access-list split-tunneling standard permit 192.168.101.0 255.255.255.0
    access-list split-tunneling standard permit 192.168.8.0   255.255.255.0
NAT: Don't use "any" in the nat-exemption, but specify all traffic that should not be natted:
    access-list nonat extended permit ip 192.168.101.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.201.0 255.255.255.0
    access-list nonat extended permit ip 192.168.8.0   255.255.255.0 192.168.201.0 255.255.255.0
Routing: The 1941 needs a route for the vpn-pool pointing to the ASA (just in case there is no default route to the ASA)

  • Can't connect but can ping & use AP Util

    A couple issues:
TC shows up in finder, can ping it (static ip, as are all my ip's) and use the airport utility. It worked fine for a day or so, now with no changes, this is where I'm at. I get an error about it not existing. I've tried to 'connect As' even 'connect to server' in Finder trying names and ip - no joy.
TC is set up with only Ethernet (cable) WiFi is turned off. File sharing with accounts (all are OK) My MacBook Pro and Mini can't connect.
I find it odd that the Air Port utility connects to it just fine. Does it use the AFP or UDP/TCP?
I'm going to reboot the TC and see. But if I need to reboot it every day or so, its worthless to me.
    Topology (another issue) is:
    router/switch Gb --> switch 2 100b ---> TC
When I tried to make the TC be the middle (to keep a Gb network) it didn't work. (yes, I know about the uplink ports; even tried the standard ports)
(oh other kinda non issue: Printers don't show up in the AirPort utility, but remote 'puters print fine)

This TC is going back. What a POS! Now it won't even connect to the LAN. Had it for less then a week and its been down more then up. NOT impressed.

  • VPN Connected but can not see folders / server

I have established a connection between an OSX server and client but now can not see the server or any services on the client.  There are no servers listed in the 'Network' section of finder and using 'Connect to server' I can not see it either. The log on the server shows the connection and the client does as well but other than that I can not do anything with the connection.
    Details
    - Using 10.6 osx server and a 10.6 client.
    - Connected via VPN, L2TP
    Thanks,
    Brian

I have connected to VPN but can't see anything on my finder or desktop.
I tried connecting to server by doing command+K and entered the ip address like afp://ipaddress/user
doesn't work. I get error message saying:
    Connection Failed
The server "165.124.164.125" is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally.

  • Losing internet connection but can ping severs

Hi. Something weird has been happening with my powerbook the last month. Safari, mail and skype cant access the internet suddenly. Rebooting my router does nothing, neither does logging out/in, but rebooting the pb resolves. When this happens I can still ping www addresses and ip addresses but all apps seem to lose connectivity. Anyone got a suggestion?

This resolved itself. Maybe it was a problem with my ISP
