VPN Failure after 9/29/06

I worked with UPenn VPN 9/27/06. No problem.
9/29/06 Download security & iTune updates.
9/30/06 Noted for first time that VPN to UPenn fails.
My menuette continuously reads, "Authenticating."
My logs & the logs at UPenn server read that I am cleared.
Talked to UPenn: No clue.
Talked to ISP: No clue.
Talked to Apple Care: No clue.

  • External Hard Drive Failures after iMac internal drive replaced

I was one of those lucky ppl who had to have my internal 1TB Seagate HDD replaced due to the recall. It was replaced on Friday.
After the drive was replaced (with another Seagate, ***?), I cloned my previous system back to the new drive (restoring from Time Machine required me to re-download Lion, which required me to re-download to a newer version of Snow Leopard, and just, Oi, vey, I used my clone).
I then had to create another bootcamp partition, and after that, I restored my previous bootcamp from an image backup with Winclone.
The next morning, my Time Machine external backup drive (a Maxtor OneTouch) makes horrible fluttering and crunching noises and cannot be found via disk utility, certainly doesn't mount to the desktop. I figure it just coincidentally failed and attached a new drive (a different OneTouch) for backup.
While Time Machine is performing an initial backup to this new drive (will take 10 hrs), I try to move a few media files to another external media drive (LaCie 1TB). I receive a couple of error -36s on a few particular files, so I figure I should wait for the Time Machine to backup and then diagnose the media drive.
The next morning (after 10 hr backup is finished), I have a stop-sign error that a disk was unmounted improperly (the LaCie media drive). The drive cannot be seen in disk utility or on a completely different MBP running Snow Leopard. It's spinning up, but it can't be read.
Only thing I can think to do is reinstall 10.8.2 over top the cloned system, make sure that the recovery partition was recreated and working.
This can't be a coinicidence, right? At this point, I'm afraid to keep my external storage drives and clone attached to the iMac, but I'm afraid to not have TM drive attached. Anyone know where to start diagnosing the problem?
    1. Could a new internal drive be the problem, hardware wise?
    2. Could the lack of an initial recovery partition or the setting up of a bootcamp partition have these sorts of consequences?
    3. Could the problem be from restoring a clone?

Well, it is a LaCie-packaged adapter, some version of that model. The hub is on the mac mini inspired line of LaCie HDs (http://www.lacie.com/company/news/news.htm?id=10269). I've had it for 6 yrs, and the hub is still going. Other drives have been running from the hub without issue for all that time (and still are). There is no hissing, and the display light indicates the hub is getting power.
You think it's time for a new hub?
The internal switchout is just a coincidence?
(Basically, I'm not a hardware expert. Does anyone know if an internal drive or internal sensor/connection problem can cause externals to fail or blowout a controller? I'm waiting on a drive dock to arrive—I'll know more whether these are HD failures or chip failures after that. Both drives showed normal-seeming power use via their display lights.)

  • SQL connection errors when stress testing mobile service: SQL failure after 3 attempts

I have created a Mobile Service (node.js), which has been running for a few months with 50-100k api calls per day with no issues.
The usage of the service will be scaled up soon, and it will receive much higher traffic, so I am running stress tests (on a staging deployment of the same service).
The api in question queries data from the sql database that is attached to the mobile service, but caches the resulting data in a redis database for 5 minutes, so each call with identical parameters will not access the SQL database, just the redis cache.
My first test never has any problems:
Run a single api calls as fast as possible using the program wrk (https://github.com/wg/wrk). This test never has a problem, and I have run it an hour continuously with a sustained rate of 200 req/s and very few timeout errors.
The second test always causes problems:
I created a list of 5 different api calls to the same service (same endpoint, but different parameters), and I run those randomly interweaved as fast as possible. I use the program locust (http://locust.io) for this, spawing 10.000 clients at a rate of 500
per second. For the first few seconds everything goes ok, but then connections start failing massively.
    I get mostly:
Error: SQL failure after 3 attempts. Error: [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]TCP Provider: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected
    host has failed to respond.
     (SqlState: 08001, Code: 10060)
And I see this in the http response:
ConnectionError(ProtocolError('Connection aborted.', gaierror(8, 'nodename nor servname provided, or not known')),)
The strange thing is that since I am running the same five calls repeatedly, only the very first of each call will actually access the sql database, every subsequent call will just return data directly from redis, and not try to access the sql database at
    all.
In the azure console for the sql database in question, I see 1860 successful connections and 11 failed connections, which does not explain the massive failure rate I am seeing.

Thanks for sharing your tips on this forum, as it will be useful for other users, that run into this issue.
Feedback like this will also help us improve error reporting in the next release, as missing class files in the packaged application is a common issue when developers are moving from the embeded oc4j instance packaged with JDewveloper to standalone instances.

  • Internal camera failure after software updates...first skype couldn't......

    Hello!
I am having internal camera failure after software updates...first skype couldn't find the camera, and now photo booth also says camera is not connected. Its a brand new MacBook Pro which has been working fine for a month, but after a software update (the blinking message said i had 13 new things to update...you know what I'm talking about right?) all of a sudden Skype couldnt find a camera, so i went to the skype community and tried some things (like trashing skype) but now photo booth says no camera detected, which is weird cause the camera is built into the computer..
    Please help!
    Thanks
    O

    First, reset the SMC:

If that doesn't help, then take it to an Apple Store for examination.

  • Have to restart VPN service after restarting macmini

    Hello,
i am using a mid2011 macmini with Lion Server (10.7.2-Build 11C74) loaded over the Appstore, connected to an Airport Extreme (FW 7.6). I configured the VPN service in the Server settings and forwarded the profile to the clients. VPN connection works just fine.
When i restart the macmini none of the clients are able to connect with the VPN Service. Other services are running without any problems (screensharing, filesharing,...), but i cannot connect with the VPN service through any client.
After i restart the VPN Service (switch off and back on) in the Server App on the macmini it works again.
Is anyone experiencing similar behaviour with the VPN service after a restart of the server? Has anyone suggestions how to get the VPN service working even after a restart without switching it off and on again?
If you need further information please reply, i will hand it in immediately.
    FYI:
I did make a complete clean install of the Server, without import of the timemachine backup to ensure the system is "clean".
    kind regards
    Marko

The issue occurred after upgrading from xf86-video-intel-v2.99.912-1 to v2.99.914+ and xorg-server-1.15.2-1 to 1.16.0-6 (and -devel).
    same issue if:
    - Switching accelaration method to "UXA" as per https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/40860
    - Adding    Option "DRI" "False"
    Digged a bit:
    - same modules errors but appears to be a Gnome bug (X starts): https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1441716
    - same modules errors but X starts up without problems http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … 175511372/
makes me doubt if this issue is related to the modules not found. Which is the single indication I found so far x-/
Any light on where can the issue comes from? hardware is pretty much standard even if getting a bit old. Never had Xorg related issue so far on this pancake.

  • Ace probe failure after IIS app pool recycle?

    Windows Server 2003 SP2
    ACE Module A2(1.6a)
I suspect this is caused by an IIS6 setting, but posting here in case anyone has seen this.  For this one particular site, we have 4 servers in the farm.  2 of those servers are fine.  The other 2 (new) servers will generate probe failure after the site's app pool recycles.  I then remove the 2 servers from service and re-activate (no inservice, then inservice) and the probe comes back as operational.  It appears that the app pool recycle somehow is resetting the hash on the default page, though I'm not sure how.  Any ideas are very much appreciated.

Yeah, the hash is inside the probe.  Here's the config for the serverfarm and the probe.  Public-007 and Public-008 are new servers...the other 6 have been in the farm for the last 2.5 years and they don't have this issue.  It's only the 2 new boxes that the probe fails when the app pool is recycled.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
That's because the Boot Camp volume was created, but your Mac hasn't been set up to start automatically from the Windows disc. Insert the Windows DVD and press C key while your Mac is starting to start Windows installation.
If you want to make sure that everything is correct, open Boot Camp Assistant and choose the option to remove Windows 7. Then, open that application again, select the option to install Windows 7 and you will be able to install Windows as usual

  • Only my MBP Drops L2TP VPN Connection after 60 Seconds

My Old G4 Laptop and my Dual G5 Tower both connect to my office via L2TP VPN without an issue. with the exact same settings exported over to my mac book pro, the connection drops after exactly 60 seconds. I've tried both wireless and wired connections, and in either case, the VPN drops after 60 seconds of connect time.

I checked with my VPN administrator. He upgraded the XServe to Mac OS 10.4.5, and we tried again, with the same results. He sent me the server log to post:

  • Users VPN drops after every 5 mins

                       Hi everyone,
We have user whose remote VPN drops after every 5 mins.
Need to know whats things i can check to troubleshoot the issue?
    User connects by RSA Token.
ISP connection is ok its not issue.
Any thing i can check in ASA ?
    Thanks
    Mahesh

On the client side, have you tested wired vs wireless to see if the problems exists in both?  If it's only one of them but not the other, try updating the drivers.  Also, if it's windows 7, take a look at the power settings in control panel.  I've seen where agressive power settings will shut off the network port when idle.  Not that big of a deal in a LAN environment but it wreaks havoc on VPN.

  • VPN broken after 10.6.4 Update / Security Update 2010-005

I have a MacMini Server that was running 10.6.3 in use as a gateway for the last 3 or 4 months and everything has been working just fine. However, after applying 10.6.4 and Security Update 2010-005 the iChat and VPN services broke.
I was able to fix the iChat service by using serveradmin in Terminal - Server Admin was showing the correct name of the iChat server, but serveradmin reported a different (incorrect) name. My only guess is that one of the updates somehow changed that setting behind the scenes.
I have yet to be able to fix the VPN (L2TP) issue, though. I can connect internally (to 10.0.1.1) with no problem. I can connect with via iPhone over 3G no problem. I cannot connect externally from a 10.5.8 or a 10.6.4 client - any attempt always fails with a timeout. The VPN log shows nothing, but the system log shows:

Which seems to be correct to me.
As with the iChat problem, everything seems to be correct as reported by Server Admin. I have been hunting for the incorrect setting using serveradmin, but so far everything there seems to be correct as well.
One last item that I just discovered today, and which is probably a huge hint (and I just don't know how to connect the dots), is that when I stop the VPN service (it's running on the gateway server), the entire office loses it's connection to the internet. Turn VPN back on, and the internet is back.
I think my server is deeply, deeply disturbed, but I am not ready to wipe it clean and start over again. I sure would appreciate any insights on this one....

PowerBook G4 under Mac OSX 10.4.6. Just to say my message won’t help PC users, sorry.
    Connection Firewire or USB2.
My nightmaric experience of 2006-03-23 update.
After I had updated, I transferred a recent playlist OK onto the iPod but to my surprise read 0 playlists, artists, songs etc on the iPod screen and could not access any tracks.
Did the 5Rs several times with no success, ie different alarm signals would show (not the sad face icon though), the iPod would not connect or would refuse to disconnect or would freeze every app. on my computer which always get a bit scarying. Checked the iPod under disk utility found out several errors.
After much fiddling around and thanks to fantastic help on the forum (track these by browsing my posts), I think I can tell you now what to do if the same happens to you and help you to recover a fully functional iPod in a couple of hours. But beware that this only applies if you don’t have any physical damage of your hardware. My iPod never made the strange noises that many users report. I should add that I am absolutely convinced that it is the update that interferes with some iPod models and so just the software has to be reinitialized.
First try a 5R of course, but if this does not solve the problem (in my case it surely did not), switch to disk mode and connect your iPod. If it opens iTunes, quit iTunes and go to disk utility. First check the disk in the SOS panel. It will give you an idea of bad sectors and/or failure to complete. If the checking is OK proceed to erase with the security option « zero out data ». If the disk has bad sectors, you should first do a quick erase with the « don’t erase data » option, then check if the disk passes the check up. If yes return to erase and erase again by selecting « zero out data ». The computer will warn you that you are going to lose functions of the iPod but don’t worry, you will restore these straight afterwards. This reformatting will take maybe a couple of hours but you should see it progressing smoothly with the elapsing time moving on. After it is completed, re-check the disk once more. You are now ready to restore, and I recommend that you do it using a previous soft version, eg, 2006-01-10 for instance, not 2006-03-23 which initially caused the problem. It may freeze while restoring. Don’t panick and try restoring again. I was successful at my second go. Complete restoring, as asked on your computer, by plugging to power supply. Then enter your own settings, langage etc, and come back to your computer, go to iTunes and…
… I wish you that, a couple of minutes later, you have hundreds songs back onto your favorite music companion and that you are ready for hours of bog-free listening like I am now.
Just to end up, I’d like to thank all the helpers on the forum (Mitch, Lyssa, Jeff… and co.) who give a lot of their time to the community in avery friendly way. I am in touch with Apple so that if ever the problem happens to be reasonably frequent, they do release a note asap.
Best of luck to everyone don’t hesitate to contact me on this thread if you need more details on the procedure, I’ll try to help as much as I can but I am not an expert just a regular user of Apple computers and slightly ; ) addicted to music and daily use of iPod (so not so mad afterall… ; ).

Don't give up HOPE ** this work for Mac users only**
so, after 4 days of trying the disk utility erase mode-- sometimes working sometimes not,,, ditto to all of these posts- my ipod seemed to have a hard drive failure the way it was clicking-- anyways-- here is what worked for me--
hold the middle button and play/pause until you see the check mark- (this puts the ipod into disk mode)
plug it in to your computer
    open up the disk utility
choose Mac OS extended - **make sure the jornaled in not selected, and also **uncheck install OS9
then erase- you may get the question about naming your ipod if itunes opens and all that -- I'd name it, but make sure you check the option to manually update- you don't want to keep the box checked to sync with your itunes at this point-then eject it by using the eject button from itunes in the window on the left-
go to your ipod software updater folder (located in your utilities folder)---- here's the catch- the only updater that seemed to work for me- after 4 days of torment- was the
11-17-05 updater!- (I actually talked to a tech. on the phone and he said the latest update does not have a bug-yeah right, that's when all my problems started- but he said the one before it does!!- thanks for letting us know apple!)
so, double click it- hit restore - and wow- it actually worked- Good luck peeps- I know, myself, I was very disappointed in apple with this situation- My warranty ran out two months ago!- like many others I see here, I feared i was looking at another 300 dollars for the 30GB- but, alass it worked Amen- Let me know if I can help anyone- I'll check back on the board soon- to answer any questions i can
