VPN Home Windows 8.1

I'm trying to set up a VPN that I can use from my laptop anywhere to my home PC. The laptop is running Windows 7 enterprise and the PC is running windows 8.1 pro. I've followed a few websites showing simple instructions on how to set up windows 8 as a VPN server,
forward some ports and apparently voila but it's not working for me.
To test I've got them both on the same network and I've set up an incoming connection on Windows 8 and forwarded the ports: 1723 for TCP and 500 for UDP and 1701 for UDP.
From the other machine when I run portqry using the WAN address of the router it shows 1723 as FILTERED. I think this means it could be open, could be closed so that might be the problem but I can't find anything on how to fix it.
When I try to connect to the VPN on the PC from the laptop using the WAN address and port 1723 I get and error that says.
Port opened.
Error 868: The remote connection was not made because the name of the remote access server did not resolve.
There are options to log and I've had a look at the logs but they're pages long and I don't know what I'm looking at. I've googled alot for the error code but haven't found anything to resolve it. I've got both firewalls turned off for now.
The connection is ADSL with internode – I haven't been able to find anything that says they block this kind of traffic.
The problem could be on either end of the connection and I'm not really sure where to go next. Any suggestions?
Edit: Also, is it possible that I'm barking up the wrong tree to get the functionality I want?

Hi,
How did you configure the VPN Server?

  • VPN on Windows 7 Pro, Windows 7 and 8.1 clients

I am wanting to setup my desktop at home (running Windows 7 Pro) to host a VPN, so when I'm away I can connect to it and have network resources available. I want to connect through the internet. I have attempted to set this up a few times, but I
get errors. There is not a server or ADDS running on my home network. My home network in connected with a Netgear router. I have forwarded port 1720 to the PC that I have the VPN incoming connection setup on. Please help!!!

Windows, does allow for folder permissions. That is why, at first thought, I figured using the VPN built into Windows was the answer. But it seems to be really buggy and hard to get to work on a home based network. Setting up VPN on Windows Server, however,
is easy. I know the connections will strain resources a bit, but I only want to really allow only two connections, one for me, to be able to remote control and use the network resources when not at home, and the other for one user to have access to just a
folder or two. I would like to do this without the need of extra software...and without really buying anything, since it is just for personal use. I guess for now, I will have to explore Team Viewers capabilities more.....

  • Contivity VPN Client, Windows Media Center and Linksys

Has anyone had any issues connecting through VPN on Windows Media? I am using Contivity Client V6.01 (I've also tried some previous versions) and going through a Linksys router with a wireless connection. My laptop, which runs XP Home, runs flawlessly with the same client and the same connection parameters through the same Linksys router.
When I first connect to the VPN site, it appears successful. Just a few seconds later, my wireless connection disappears. It's not just the media center, either -- it brings down my whole internet connection. Once the VPN client detects the loss of the connections, just a few seconds later, the internet connection reconnects. It's as though the VPN connection and my home network's internet connection are mutally exclusive.
    Anyone else find a solution?

you might need to upgrade the firmware of your router and make sure that the configuration is right. because losing internet access at the same time will also be the cause of the configuration of the router.

  • Home window does not display properly

When I first sign on to Firefox, the home window (Google) is displayed too far to the right of the screen to use. The only fix I have found for this is to slightly re-align the screen by moving the tab in the bottom right corner. This alignment problem is not critical, but is irritating since the screen must be re-aligned for each signon.

Please create a screenshot of the problem you're seeing by following the guide mentioned at [[How do I create a screenshot of my problem?]].
Once you've done this, attach the saved screenshot file to your forum post by clicking the '''Browse...''' button below the ''Post your reply'' box. This will help us to visualize the problem.

  • Can i create a home window without using a NIB file

I hate interface builder, it is a really counter-intuitive piece of junk. Please don't try to convince me otherwise I prefer to do it all in code. Right now i have my whole product running dynamically, creating all the interface objects programmatically as my positioning is all calculated on the fly.
However I still have one NIB file (MainWindow.NIB) that creates the home window and somehow links to my AppDelegate class, which is the startup class for my app. I see that my main.c routine calls UIApplicationMain() which somehow loads the main nib (hidden magic here), and then eventually my AppDelegate() method which is of calss UIWindow() gets called with an initialize() call followed by applicationDidFinishLaunching() call and off we go.
Can I create the window dynamically by not using NIBs? Now that we have ipad and iphone to contend with, I would want to create a window that is either 320 x 480 or 768 x 1024 depending on what machine I am on. I would like to get rid of the NIB because I don't understand the wiring stuff and I tried to make a NIB myself but now get a cryptic error message, and anyway the NIB has a fixed size and my app wants to be dynamic now that we have two screen sizes.
The second part of the question is how do you know what kind of machine you are on? I don't see a Gestalt() routine like in the old mac days so you can tell what machine it is.

There are always less-informed people who think that a STATIC development tool is somehow more powerful than a flexible dynamic interface computed as one goes. The idea of a static screen form that you control dates back the 80's; modern interfaces are DYNAMIC and interface builder cannot construct those; sure it can perhaps help you lay out things, but if the user turns on certain features then new controls are visible. We have built products with over 500 controls in them and as only perhaps 25 are needed at any one time the software rearranges the screen in the most optimal form at all times. The more advanced the product the more one chafes at a static design tool.

  • In built VPN in windows 8.1

    Hi,
We have been using checkpoint vpn in windows 7 and its working nice and even it works with secondary tunnel to connect to different vpns . When we migrate to windows 8- we are facing issues like we don't get any prompt for secondary tunnel and also can not
    access few urls.
    What need to be check.
    Please help

    Hi,
What's the secondary tunnel VPN? The Checkpoint VPN is a third-party product, about its issue, it's recommended you contact its official support.
If you point to the Windows 8.1 built-in VPN, here I suggest you follow this guide to check your operation step by step:
Set Up and Edit VPN Connections in Windows 8

And troubleshoot its connection via this tutorial:

Note: It's also applied to Windows 8.1.

  • Finder opens up home window on startup

When I start up my MacBook, my home window appears on screen (Desktop, Documents... etc) This never used to happen and I don't want I had done to make this appear.
Any ideas on how to stop this from happening?
    Thanks

    Hey again,
I figured that probably wouldn't be, but at least it was worth the try. Try changing your desktop background too. For some odd reason, many people have had this same problem until they changed their desktop background again. I am not exactly sure as to how that works, but it may be causing the problem. Then go ahead and see if that works.

  • Cisco vpn on Windows 8/8.1 x64

    Hi!
I know that the support for Cisco VPN Clinet is suspended a long time.
But, it is only client that operates with a support for Etoken.
Here, it is the same problem for this issue:
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11882951/cisco-vpn-client-windows-8?recent=false
It is a problem with certificate storage in Windows 8 x64.
Can you tell us, it is possible to make a small update to repair this error.
On Windows 8 x32 all it is perfect with Etoken.

TheGreenBow works with hundreds of different kinds of VPN hosts/servers. The trial version is fully functional so that you can test it. Cisco is no longer developing their VPN client so I don't think you're going to get your question answered.

  • Visible home window when closing document

    Hi,
in Acrobat 11, the application frame with the toolbars, tools, ... was hidden as soon as a document has been closed with CMD + W on the Mac. In Acrobat DC, the Home window appears when closing a document with CMD + W and I need to hit the same again to hide/close the application frame.
How could I revert to the old behavior?
    Thanks and kind regards,

  • Difference between setting up a vpn with windows 7 and cisco routers

Hi.I was wondering what the main difference Is between setting up a vpn with windows 7 or configuring It on cisco routers.
When you setup the vpn on windows 7 or xp do the client and server pc's take care of the encryption and decryption whereas configuring vpn on routers , the encryption and decryption Is done solely by the routers?
If I want to setup a connection where an IP In the same Internal lan Is assigned to the client pc I'm guessing I'd have to use a router configuration.
      Thanks

Thank you for the response, lucky for me there was another option. Threatened to cancel with the ISP on the NAT side unless they assigned us a public static ip/gateway/subnet. They ended up doing that and the VPN connected as soon as the changes were made in the Linksys.

  • Mac at home, Windows at work, need VPN help

I need some help with connecting to my work using VPN. I have Windows on my computer at work and I recently bought a MacBook. I want to connect using a VPN client (I don't particularly care which, just something) to my work, and then use Apple Remote Desktop to do work on the computer.
I don't know what the authentication # is, but I do have the IP address to connect to.
Can anyone help? I have my work VPN destination IP address and user name and password. Do I need anything else? What do I do?
    Thanks!

You're going to have to find out what kind of VPN server they have at work. Most businesses these days use an SSL VPN, and if it is provided by Checkpoint or Cisco, there are OS X clients available or their Java clients work with OS X. Other SSL VPNs (especially the cheaper appliances) do not support OS X as they use ActiveX clients.
If there's a PPTP or IPSEC VPN, then you can configure OS X to use that, but it's not a trivial task (ergo, the move to SSL VPNs).
Once you are connected, then you can access your work computer with a remote desktop client as suggested in an earlier post. But you first need to ask the IT people at work about the VPN so you know which way you need to connect.

  • VPN w/ Windows 7/8.1

I am setting up a computer specifically to serve as my personal server for when I move away from home to on campus, but all the information I find is not correct or useless. I am looking to have this server up and running with its VPN by December,
    for obvious reasons.
    Here are the devices involved:
eMachine desktop powered by Windows 7 Home Premium (designated to be the server and VPN host) (at home where I can control the modem and router)
Gateway laptop powered by Windows 8.1 (laptop) (needs to be able to connect to the VPN)
Microsoft Surface 2 powered by Windows RT 8.1 (tablet) (needs to be able to connect to the VPN)
Any information and suggestions are welcomed.

    Hi Jesse,
If you want to configure Windows Home Premium as VPN Serer, there is a great way to also do this with a really handy tool built into Windows 7 Home Premium or higher. It's "Incoming Connection".
The Incoming Connection link in Windows 7 is little hidden. To reach out to the link,  follow:
    - From Control Panel, open Networking and Sharing Center
    - Click Manage Network Connections from left menu
    - Press Alt key, and select File menu  (or press
    Alt F)
    - From File menu, Select New Incoming Connection
For the detailed information, please refer to the following article:
