VPN on demand

I configured the "Default" VPN (L2TP) configuration, but now I can't get VPN on demand to work. I entered livepage.apple.com into the VPN on demand list, but no configurations appear when I click on "Pop Up" and when I open Safari the VPN doesn't connect.

I wanted to use VPN on demand to force my computer to connect to the VPN on login by opening Safari in my Login Items Automator script, but I found a discussion of how to connect to a VPN directly using AppleScript here:
http://bbs.macscripter.net/viewtopic.php?id=22992
Now I don't need to worry about VPN on demand or Safari.

  • AirPort Extreme Crash during PPTP connect using VPN on demand

I can reproduce this crash consistently every time.
My AEBSn is running 7.4.2. My MBP is running 10.6.2.
I set up a PPTP connection, tick "send all traffic over VPN connection" in the advanced options.
I add a domain to the "VPN on Demand" list and apply changes.
I click connect, and the AEBS light immediately goes amber. A few seconds later, it's back to green and everything is groovy...unless I try to connect again.
The problem is solved by simply removing the domain from "VPN on Demand."
Here's the relevant snippet from ppp.log:

    Funny, huh?

    Hi
I have had this problem with my Airport Extreme since day 1 and it is extremely irritating. Using Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003 I can crash the router any time I like (or more to the point, really really dislike) by simply initiating a PPTP VPN from any client (wired or wireless) behind the Airport Extreme. The device flashes orange, drops everyone's internet connection and then about a minute later, comes back up again.
Whenever I have to connect to another site using VPN, I need to use NextG internet connection instead of my home cable connection. Any help with this would be gold because other than this really annoying problem (oh and the 'must reboot everytime you make a minor modification to configuration' requirement) I find it a great rock solid wireless access point.

  • 10.4.7 VPN on demand delay

I've set up VPN on demand to connect when I try to access my Safari homepage. In Mac OS X 10.4.6, when I opened Safari my VPN connection would start connecting immediately. In Mac OS X 10.4.7, when I open Safari there's a delay before the VPN connection starts. Can I eliminate or reduce this delay?

I'll take the deafening silence as a "no".

  • Does IOS 8 support vpn on demand rules of earlier versions(io5,ios6)

I know the vpn demand rules changed from ios7 ,how ever i have read that apple might still support the earlier rules set.
did io8 stopped supporting the demand rules of older versions ?

Did you ever find a solution for the issue you described here? I have been struggling with this same problem since iOS 8 was released. All subsequent updates to iOS still have not resolved it... any help is much appreciated!

  • Shortcut/alias to VPN server

i'm sure this has been answered but can't find anything in a search...
i've successfully set up a VPN to our server, but i'm unable to find a way to create a shortcut or alias to the server once i've connected the VPN (using the VPN icon in the menu bar)... is this possible? or do i need to keep using Connect to Server... in the Finder menu??
ideally i'd like an alias either on my Desktop, the Finder toolbar or on my Dock...
    cheers

but when entering the exact address (afp://ip_address/FKDA) in VPN on Demand, it doesn't activate the vpn
You didn't read closely enough. VPN on demand requires that you enter the DOMAIN NAME that should trigger the VPN connection. Not a URL.
e.g. if the URL you're accessing is afp://server.domain.local/sharepoint then the domain name would be server.domain.local.
Without checking, I don't know if an IP address is sufficient - probably not since I could imagine VPN on Demand intercepts name lookups, so you may need to use the name of the server on the internal network, not its IP address. If that's the case you'd need to ensure that there's valid, working DNS for your internal network.

The VPN server in Server.app is these days pretty feeble, it only does PPTP and L2TP and does not support using security certificates or VPN on demand. (Which requires security certificates.) As a result the security of Apples VPN server is only capable of functions which have all been successfully cracked. Now for most people that might not be too much of a concern but if your a law, health, finance, or government customer then it should be a concern.
    However...
While the VPN server itself does not support clustering nor in fact do any of the services in Server.app there might be a way to achieve what you want. If you have a DNS load-balancer then you can point all the clients to the load-balancer and it will distribute the requests to two or more Apple VPN servers. You just need to make sure each Apple VPN server gives out a different range of IP addresses with no overlaps.

  • VPN at startup / via terminal ?

    Hi,
I have two problems I need to solve with VPN. I'm using the Tiger built-in stuff via Internet Connect to connect to a VPN. I'm doing this from a headless XServe via ARD right now. The reason for the VPN is related to software development which needs to connect to my clients network to access database servers.
    1) In order to start the VPN connection, I need to login as a user, fire up internet connect and invoke the connection. What I'd like to do is to have the connection be establish as part of the bootup process in case I restart the server. So I wonder if there's a way to that via a startupitem or other and 'without' being 'logged in' as a user.
    2) Sometimes the VPN connection drops, in which case I have to use ARD to re-establish it again. Is there a way to start the connection via the terminal?
I suppose if 2 works, 1 should be doable as well.
Any feedback would be highly appreciated.
    - J

I haven't had need to use this, so can't speak from experience....
There's an option in the VPN setup to Enable VPN on Demand
This should bring-up the VPN connection whenever the domain is accessed, whether at start-up or if the vpn drops.

  • How do I set up my ipad to work with Exchange 2007 without VPN (via port 443)?

    Hi,
we currently use blackberries on a BES server, but planning to migrate to iPhones to use ActiveSync via https to get mail pushed out to our devices on and iPhone 5 we have yet to purchase.  We have and ipad 3 i'm trying to get to work on before purchasing an iphone.
i have an MS Exchange Server 2007 on one box, and i have a firewall/VPN device on another box.
i've gotten the ipad to connect to MS Exchange when using the Cisco ipsec VPN, but would like to know if it's possible to have MS Exchange push out emails to our devices (by not using POP3, but to use https)
i've tried opening tcp 443 on the firewall and using the firewall/VPN device as the server address (didn't work)
i've stumbled across this 3rd party software that connects VPN on demand (isimplyconnect), but that doesn't seem to push emails correctly to the ipad.
can someone help me out a bit?
    thank you.

ok, so i got my iphone online and able to receive mail outside of the network, but when i bring my iphone inside my corporate network on to my internal wifi, i cannot receive mail.  I know this is a firewall setting issue, but is there another way around it besides creating another mail profile for inside the network?
and another thing, i'm missing my notes sync with Active sync, any ideas why this is missing?
i've cleared out my notes on both ends and adding a new note in outlook, but the sync option is missing.

  • VPN on iOS 7 ideas?

I think I already know the answer. And that is no, but I'm hoping you can teach me a trick or two. Is there a way to keep my PPTP VPN from not disconnect when the iPad or iPhone goes to 'sleep'? It is very annoying to manually go in and out preferences and tab connect.
My VPN provider don't have an VPN on Demand app or anything fancy like that.
Is there a work-a-around? Or is it possible to somehow make the connect to VPN easier, through Control Center?
My devices isn't jailbroken. And I've a Time Capsule which can't be configured to run VPN.
    ANy ideas?
    Thanks

    i think i stumbled onto a solution.
the upgrade to os7 brought a bunch of music into my phone i didn't care to hear anymore.
(free downloads from the itunes twitter feed..some of them are good, most of them i normally delete immediately)
i had 3 pesky songs that would not allow me to delete.
every other song in my library gave me the option to delete, just not the ones i never wanted to hear again.
..super frustrating when the song keeps starting over everytime you touch it while scrambling for a delete option.
they were purchases which i'd hidden.
i plugged to computer and tried to use iTunes to delete but they did not appear.
all "show all" options for music and video were off.
    itunes match was off.
    all automatic downloads were off.
    "show all music" was off.
i logged out of my apple ID for several minutes.
i think this may have given time for my account to resynchronize the items i didn't want to see anymore.
i've logged back in and they're still gone.
i don't care if i hear a new eric clapton song again for the rest of the year thank you.

  • IPSEC VPN Settings via Profile Manager

It is not possible to set the following lines via GUI in Apples ProfileManager or via Apple Configurator in the IPSec section:
    <key>XAuthPassword</key>
    <string>myVPNuserPassword</string>
You can set the lines via GUI in the old iPhone Configuration Program on Windows.
If you can't set the "XAuthPassword", you have to type in the password every time you want to establish the VPN.
We use certificates for device authentication.
    Anyone a solution ?

Yes, there are two possible solutions.
    1. As per my article here http://jelockwood.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/how-to-do-vpn-on-demand-for-ios-at-zero .html you would use a StrongSwan VPN server and as per my article use the xauth-noauth plugin to prevent it asking for a username and password, it will then only use the client certificate for device authentication.
    2. You can use the two keys listed above but you will have to manually edit the mobileconfig file and add them. Therefore you cannot use Profile Manager or Apple Configurator. For this I used iPhone Configuration Utility to create the initial mobileconfig file, and then I used TextWrangler to add the two keys. With a manually produced mobileconfig file I do not believe there is anyway to send it via Profile Manager but you can either email it to the device or make it available via a web server. Other MDM solutions than Profile Manager do allow pushing uploaded mobileconfig files, I used Meraki Systems Manager and pushed my hand edited mobileconfig files 'over the air' to the devices.
It should be noted that if you are authenticating usernames and password against a directory server e.g. Active-Directory, Open Directory or LDAP, then if you enforce password ageing and changes you are going to have to hand edit and resend an updated mobileconfig file with the new password in it. This is why I chose option 1 above for my own situation. It is in theory less secure as it only uses a single basis for authentication - the certificate but I felt this an acceptable trade-off.

  • Native VPN PPTP client won't stay connected

    Folks,
I have setup my VPN using the Mac OSX native PPTP VPN client to connect to my client's work network. However, it appears that it won't stay connected.  I have been searching the net for answers.  I can't find a definitely one.  Does anyone have the same issue where you can share your solution with me please?
To be more specific, I have a Windows XP laptop and a Mac.  I connect to the same VPN on both machines.  The Windows XP laptop will stay connected while the mac will drop the connection randomly.  This is particularly true when my Mac went to sleep and then wake up.
In my PPTP VPN setup, I have already uncheck the option "Disconnect when user logs out" option in the Advance setting.
Also, this appears to be Mac OSX issue because I have another client where I can use the Cisco AnyWhere VPN client to connect and the connection stays connected all the time including the time when my Mac went into sleep mode.
My mac is the new MacBook Pro with Retina display running Mountain Lion (The original OS is Lion and then upgraded to Mountain Lion) and I am using the Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter to connect to my wire network.  It doesn't make much difference even if I switch over to a Wireless connection.  In both cases, the VPN just won't stay connected.
Can someone point me to the right direction as to where I can trouble shoot this please?  Thanks.

Thanks sberman.  In the article, it mentions something about VPN on Demand, where in the setup do you see this setup?  I am in the Network setup area and I am not finding this.  Also, if I turn on the "Use verbose loggin", where is the log file?  Is it still the /var/log/ppp.log file
Also, one more thing, my main ethernet connection setting does not include a proxy setting.  But my VPN setup includes a proxy setting.  Do you think that I may need to update the main ethernet setting to add the proxy setup to it as well? But I don't want to keep updating the main ethernet connection network setting to switch between proxy or not.  Any suggestion will be welcome.
    Thanks.

  • Does ios vpn ondemand conflict with manual vpn?

I have an ios 7.1.2 device with a vpn configuration profile applied to force a IPSEC vpn on for all internet access.  This works great - when ever I access a web page etc, the vpn springs into life.
However, if I go to Settings, VPN and manually switch the VPN OFF; and then manually switch the VPN back on again - the VPN no longer works properly:
-The VPN logo still appears at the top leftside, when the VPN is manually switched back on again
-However, when I go to a web page I get the message unable to connect to the internet.
-Specifically, I know that traffic is going to the vpn server, and the vpn server is returning traffic - but it appears the device is unable to handle it.
Has anyone else come across this use case?
I know that if having had the problem, I manually switch the vpn back OFF; and then go to a web page  to trigger the vpn on demand - all is well.
So its as if there is a conflict between ondemand and manual vpn setting?
    Has anyone else experienced this?
Is it a bug or a feature?  Is there anything I can do to avoid it, or having used on demand - do I always have to trigger on demand and never manually?

I have this same question for IPSec on both iOS and MAC OS X.   Does the built in iOS and MAC OS X VPN client's support IPSec VPN connections where the VPN server's public IPv6 address is used ?     I am getting a server not found error when I try to get this working.

I am glad there was a copy paste added but it would have been nice to use your own ringtones and I don't understand why they could not use gps for the direction of the phone too.
I am sure if they can pinpoint you on the map they could tell what direction your holding the phone on the 3g.
The cam is very poor on the 3g phone it,s more like an afterthought.
I don't understand why apple did not have the function of moving your photos and ringtones with drag and drop onto itunes rather than sync to a folder.
yes there are apps you can buy but even a £20 phone lets you do all of above without added cost to the user.
and where is the software reset for clearing the memory or is that an afterthought too.
PS not picking holes it's a fact.
The HTC phone is a nice phone mate has one.

  • Advantages of Using Secure Connect in Cisco Jabber Version 9.0

    Hello,
About a month ago we deployed Jabber for iPhone.   For VPN we used Cisco AnyConnect, certificate authentication and VPN on demand.   We used our MDM to deploy the certificates and AnyConnect configuration.    So far everything is working as designed.  Now with the release of version 9, Secure Connect is an option and I was wondering what are the advantages of using Secure Connect?
    Thanks

    Hi Manrico,
Are the all the systems using the same firewall policy. It could be one of the rules configured in the SEP client. What build version are you running? Are all systems using the same version of VPN client? As Parminder stated, you should disable the firewall and check behavior.
If the firewall is found to be the cause, you can troubleshoot by adding an "Allow All" rule to the top of the SEP policy. Moving the rule down one line at a time until the problem occurs again. Once that happens, you will have narrowed it down to the rule just above.
Let us know how it goes for you.
    Best,
    Thomas

  • Text has just one line left on the bottom to write in.

I have a BB Curve 8900 v5.0.0.900 (Bundle 1626, PkRDIEN 5.2.0.96) with T-Mobil service. I did the update for my phone a while ago. When I want to do a text message, the screen displays the previous message over most of the screen with just one line left on the bottom to write in. It makes writing a text a pain because I have to scroll up every time to make sure my text is correct. I've tried to live with this but I don't love it. Can I change this?
    Thank you,
    Girlfriend

The easiest solution is VPN on Demand
System Preferences -> Network -> (VPN) -> Advanced -> VPN on Demand
Add the hostname/domain name of the resource you're trying to access over VPN to this list. Now the OS will track any access attempt to the specified hostname/domain and will automatically bring up the VPN connection (prompting for username/password if needed).
As for the Dock icon, that depends on the resource you're accessing.
If it's a file share, just mount the share manually then drag the share's icon from your desktop to your Dock. You can now click on the Dock to mount the sharepoint (initiating the VPN connection thanks to VPN on Demand).
If it's a web site, drag the URL from your browser to your Dock. Clicking the icon will launch the URL in your preferred browser (again, triggering VPN on Demand as appropriate).
