VPN trouble on total Apple network

I downloaded OS X server (clean install, nothing imported or migrated) for the first time yesterday on my home iMac w/ Yosemite 10.10.1. I thought VPN setup and access would be fairly straightforward, but i have had nothing but trouble. I obviously cant access the VPN outside the LAN, but even on the LAN, i cannot connect from any other devices. i have set this up on Mavericks before and had no issues at all (different machine, different network)
If someone can tell me how my home network and settings should be configured, i'll adjust it as necessary and then start trouble shooting from there with a slice of humble pie.
Network setup is as follows:
Cable Modem ---> Airport Time Capsule (ATC) ---*ethernet extension*---> Airport Express (AE) (extending existing network) ---> iMac w/ server plugged in ethernet to AE
1. The ATC is handling DHCP and NAT on the network (192.168.1.2 - .200)
(not sure what the port forward settings should be exactly, but this wouldn't explain why theres no LAN connection to VPN would it?)
2. imac has manual local ip of 192.168.1.20, with no active firewall in security settings
3. not using any registered domain, simply trying to connect via external ip on L2TP using shared secret and user credentials
4. only one user account on the system (myself as administrator)
5. VPN offering 5 client addresses for L2TP starting at 192.168.1.220
6. Under DNS settings on server VPN pane, 192.168.1.1 is listed as a "name server to connected clients" (no idea what this means) and my ISP's web address is listed as the only "search domain to connected clients"
7. No Routes configured
My ultimate goal for the process is to be able to login and VNC any machine on my home network from the internet i.e. office network, as well as network file sharing. PLEASE HELP! i will offer any more necessary info. thank you for your time.

the wifi router could also be blocking
and to really test if the windows firewall is the problem then try turning it off!
if that scare you too much then disable the internet modem / cable modem or the likes while you test
always remove more and more factors when troubleshooting sooner or later it will work and you can narrow down which factor did the job and work on that

Lost my apple network - connected via airport

Hi
well this has hapened twice now and both times i had been on the internet about 1 hour before in my Lavalife profile and searching other singles sites.
My Apple Network connection just disappers totally, is slowoy starts to disconnect, the bars on the signal slowly get less and less and then "you are not cnnected to the internet". Thsi comes up when i am on the internet doing searches for information about an 1 hour after loging out of the singles pages.
Could there be a conection?
And while i fixed it last time this time the same process is not working. So nw i am connected via the in-built ethernet and it came up fine and with no trouble to connect.
My airport network though is still not found. Oh sh-t! now i just look to make sure i give the correct infor and bam there they are both green lights ethernet active via IP................and airport connected via apple network .............
How the bl--dy h-ll does this happen
It is only now since i have a profile with Lavalife could this be the problem
Please inform me i am not so much a computer literate and wold so much like to understand and to know what has happened

Tammy, I don't think it's anything to do with your Lavalive Profile at all.
My guess is either one of the myriad Airport/Wireless problems, or the G5/Airport/Antannae problems, or could it be Heat related?.
But what did you do to fix it before?
Have you tried making a New User to see if it does the same for them?
Have you tried the 10.4.10 Combo Update yet? If using German? and/or VodaPhone, see this 1st...

Windows VPN clients can't use network servers after 10.5.1 upgrade

We have two Xserves, both formerly running 10.4.11. One is the OD master, the other a replica. The replica is also the VPN server, and is a DHCP server for the small number of IP addresses reserved for VPN clients.
The OD master upgrade went fine. I completely reinstalled the OD replica, set the replica up again, and set up the VPN server. It supports L2TP/IPsec connections only.
After the upgrade, Mac users running Tiger or Leopard can connect to the VPN server and connect to network services without any problems. Windows users can connect, but cannot actually USE anything on my office network. For example, if you try to connect to a web server either by fully qualified domain name or by hostname, the connection from the browser simply times out.
In the Windows command line I can verify that I have an active connection by pinging and using the tracert command (equivalent of traceroute on UNIX). Hostname resolution works, too. But nothing happens when you try to open a web browser, which is mostly what my users need to do.
It doesn't matter whether you're logging in with an OD user account or a local account defined solely on the VPN server. Same behavior in Windows.
I had to take an older XServe running 10.4.11 out of our data center, move it to the office, and set it up on the same external network connection. 10.4.11 server works, 10.5.1 doesn't, from the same Windows client, set up exactly the same way.
I've been through the hoops with Apple Enterprise support, who now tell me that Engineering kicked it back to them and told them they'd charge me $695 to get it fixed, because it's ostensibly custom configuration work. If that's true, why is Windows XP listed under L2TP/IPSec support on page 127 of the Leopard Network Services Admin guide? I don't want a custom fix, I just want it to work the way it's supposed to work. Or I want Apple to retract the claim that OS X Server is the best workgroup server solution for Macs and Windows.
Anyone else encounter this problem or know of a fix?

Had the same problems, started after i tried out the firewall in Leopard server.
Seems that not all settings are reset even after turning the firewall off.
To reset the firewall to its default setting:
1 Disconnect the server from the Internet.
2 Restart the server in single-user mode by holding down the Command-s keys during
startup.
3 Remove or rename the address groups file found at /etc/ipfilter/
ipaddressgroups.plist.
4 Remove or rename the ipfw configuration file found at /etc/ipfilter/ipfw.conf.
5 Force-flush the firewall rules by entering the following in Terminal:
$ ipfw -f flush
6 Edit the /etc/hostconfig file and set IPFILTER=-YES-.
7 Complete the startup sequence in the login window by entering exit:
The computer starts up with the default firewall rules and firewall enabled. Use Server
Admin to refine the firewall configuration.
8 Log in to your server’s local administrator account to confirm that the firewall is
restored to its default configuration.
9 Reconnect your host to the Internet.

I keep getting kicked off and getting a ! in my airport. Last time it happended I called apple and the suggested I wipe my HD and reinstall everything. I did and it did not work. One day I turned my laptop on and it connected no problem. Now it has kicked me off again. I tried resetting my IP address but that does not work either! Has anyone had this problem?

Try this:
Apple menu / System Preferences / Network.
Click Location: and select Edit Locations..
Click + (plus sign), and enter a name for the new location - anything will do.
Apply this.

Trouble extending a wireless network

Hello,
I am having trouble extending my wireless network. I have a time capsule running 802.11N and this is plugged into a Motorola Cable (SBV5121) modem. Until now I have not had any trouble with this network running either a PC or MacBook.
I recently purchased an airport express - dual band, and have configured both it and the timecapsule to allow network extension (express is configured to extend a network).
After some time - perhaps 2-3 hours or even longer, I lose my internet connection (error I get is I cannot obtain an IP address - or no valid IP address.) I think this may be related to DHCP, so I tried config with static IP for both time capsule and airport express internal network. When I lose internet connection, I can still use the express to play music through - which to me indicates problems re the outside network.
When I unplug (turn off) the express from power - I am able to get back on the net. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

How do I add an Airport Extreme with Time Capsule to an existing non-Apple network? I have an ISP provided wireless Router that has to remain as the base station. I am able to join my 1/2TB Airport Extreme and Airport Express to the network, but I can't access/use Time Machine.

One option would be to connect the Time Capsule (TC) to the ISP-provided wireless router by Ethernet. You can then configure the for a roaming network. Then, depending on what your goal is for the AirPort Express, you can either: 1) Add it to roaming network, 2) Configure the TC & the Express for an "extended" network, or 3) Configure the Express to "join" the roaming network for AirPlay.

Trouble with my Apple ID on multiple devices

I am having trouble with my Apple ID when downloading app updates. I go to update my Apps, but the Apple ID for a seperate iPod, that I also sync with this computer, is what appears when the password is requested. I checked the account in Settings > Store and it is the correct one. But everytime I attempt to update my Apps, it has the iPod's Apple ID, which is my father's Apple ID.
In short, when I try to update an app on my iPhone, my Apple ID is not displayed, but my father's iPod Apple ID is displayed with a request for the password. I am not sure what I am doing wrong, but I would appreciate your assistance.

Ok, so you want to remove data (contacts, bookmarks, calendar etc) from other users from your iCloud/Apple ID?
If you want to use your ID for your family because it is the account everybody uses to buy stuff then you only need to ensure that your apple ID is set up in the store (settings-store) and then the users of each device and put their own apple ID in icloud/message/facetime/etc.
To set up your device, in my opinion, it is best to back up to itunes, and then plug your new device into itunes and "set up as ..." and select the backup from your device. This will import all your data/settings and your new device will be set up just like your old one.
I am not certain about using the same payment method for more than one account.

If you updated your existing account then try logging out of it on the iPhone by tapping on the id in Settings > iTunes & App Stores and then log back in and see if that 'refreshes' the account on the iPhone. If you created a new account then any content that you purchased/downloaded via the old account will remain tied to that old account, and only that old account can download updates to its apps.

Apple Network No Longer Connects To Internet After 6 Weeks.

This morning I was connected to the internet via Apple Network. However, after work I couldn't connect to the Apple Network. Eventually, I started experimenting and I switched internet connections. Now, I can make an internet connection using a connection by the name of "000D...BF60."
I'm connected via an ethernet. I have Airport On.
My question: Is it normal for the internet connection to switch from an Apple Network to another network?
No idea why it changed like this. Apple Network still doesn't work and I was using it since I started with Mac 6 weeks ago.

You are probably connecting to a neighbor's wireless network. Unplug your base station and see if the network remains.

Compatibility between windows 8 and apple networks?

I have a apple network set up at my parent's house that has worked marvelously for the past years. THe network has a time capsule and two airport express. Unfortunately not everyone at my house is an apple user, and my stepdad just got a new HP laptop with Windows 8 and it doesn't seem to be connecting properly to the wifi network.
ANy idea why this is? is it a problem with the firmware? windows 8? the airports? the time capsule?

Windows does not handle the names that apple tends to default to.. so make sure all names are..
short.. 10-20 characters
no spaces.. they are not valid in windows networking
pure alphanumeric.. the apple default is to use apostrophe.. not at all liked by windows.
That unfortunately means a full reset of the whole system if it is non-compliant.
A different solution is to simply buy a cheap wireless router.. say TP-Link WDR3600, which is about $80 here.. and probably cheaper in US.. or even cheaper model, like 1043ND.. which is about $50 and run it as AP only plugged into the TC by ethernet.

What do you mean by reboot? Do you mean restore? Because if you haven't restored, then that's the next step. You'll need a computer with the latest version of iTunes and a USB connector.

How to connect pcs to secured apple network?

My girlfriend has two pcs, one for work and one for personal use. She is able to connect to my apple network if it is the automatic, unsecured setting but if I setup a secured network it seems to be nearly impossible her to connect. We have tried the WEP 13 character password, which we understand is almost useless. We have tried the WPA2 13 character password also. Does anyone have any knowledge of this problem? It does not seem to be a very common issue because I am not able to find any answers which make it work yet.

No guarantees, but this worked perfectly on my sister's XP machine.
On your Mac......
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Select your Apple router and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Change the setting for Wireless Security to WPA/WPA2 Personal
Use an 8 character password consisting only of of numbers and lower case letters with no spaces
Click Update to save settings
Restart the PC and try to log on.
If still no luck, the Windows FireWall settings likely need to be checked by a PC guy who understands them. The anti-virus program may also be blocking the connection.

Ichat problems over apple network

We have 2 WDS network participating airport express base stations connected to the internet via Comcast cable. The network is really fast and we never had a problem with multi-way video chatting inside or outside the house.
Now that the family upgraded to leopard, we can't screen share via AIM or bonjour (connection doctor says we don't have capabilities because the network is too slow. We can video chat and it's extremely fast, but when I enabled the effects, we were disconnected.
It seams that 2 mac laptops connected with the latest software over a relatively standard apple network should work...

Set the Quicktime streaming setting, goto sys prefs/quicktime/streaming/streaming speed, set to 1.5mbps(dont use automatic)
In ichats prefs click on video and change bandwidth limit to 500.
Restart iChat.
