VPN unreliable, hangs Finder

Hello,
I have a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard Server 10.6.4 with VPN set up. I can connect to the server remotely over VPN just fine, mount a share and open/modify documents, but the connection seems unreliable. Usually 5-10 minutes into working on a document (Office 2008) the Finder will hang as it tries unsuccessfully to access the share. The status of the VPN will not say disconnected or connection lost--it just seems like it silently gets stuck trying to access what isn't there.
The Mac making the VPN connection is a MacBook running 10.6.4. For testing purposes, I connect via built-in ethernet instead of airport. It works for a little while, but if I have a file open then inevitably I will end up with the pinwheel and have to relaunch the finder.
I've made absolutely sure DNS is properly configured. I connect to the server by IP address. The server is in a small office with an Airport Extreme Base Station for the router, and the router is set up to handle VPN connections. I can provide more information if asked, but I don't want this to get too long. Thanks.

adelphiconsult,
My name is Ismael.  Iam with Small Business Support Center. Even though this is a limitation on the RV082 i would like to explain why your VPN will never fail over. WAN failover is there and it will work fine, but it different when there's a VPN tunnel established. This is why logs are indicating that phase 2 never sees a phase 1 connection. Phase 1 times out because it's unable to find the correct WAN ip.
When the connection fails from one public ip and establishes another connection  with a different public ip the pfsense  VPN will not now of the new public. The one way it will know is by having the tunnel backup feature on both ends of the tunnel.
First you need 2 devices on both ends that support VPN failover. The one device i can recall that has this feature is the RV320. With two RV320 on both ends would be able do VPN failover with no issues.

  • Widows 8/8.1 VPN connections hang

I've installed Windows 8 and 8.1 on a number of computers, and find in each case that the L2TP connections I create to connect to various VPN concentrators hang after a few times connecting to one and disconnecting to connect to another or the same one
again. This never seems to happen on the first connection attempt after a reboot, and often doesn't occur with the next connection attempt or two, but if I reconnect to a few VPNs before rebooting, eventually the attempt to connect just hangs, and thereafter
the network connections charm will not come up again until after I reboot.  Worse, when I then try to reboot, the system always sits at "Restarting..." or "Shutting down..." for several minutes before the emoticon BSOD shows up.

    Hello Sean E. Woods,
How do you set up the VPN?
Please check if other computers have the same issue when they connect to the VPN.
If so, this issue may be caused by the VPN.

  • Server folder with lots of files hangs Finder and Terminal

I work remotely from home, and connect to my company's PC network using VPN software and Finder's Go -> Connect to Server...
Pre-Tiger, this worked fine. I could browse remote folders in the Finder, no matter how many files and other folders were contained in these folders...
Ever since I loaded Tiger, when I connect to a server and navigate to a folder with "lots of" files (I don't know what the number is, but I do know that one of the folders that is a problem for me has 130 folders in it), the Finder hangs up and has to be relaunched...
The same goes if I open a Terminal window and "cd" to the same directory... if I do an "ls", it hangs.
I repeat, I never had this problem pre-Tiger, and the folders have not grown in size.
    Please help?
    Thank you!

I think I solved it!!! After trying all sorts of copying from backups etc.... with no good result, I resorted to Cocktail and used the function in the second page called... System, under the Tab called Database 'Rebuild launch services database', though don't tick the box.
This fixed things for me!! Hope it works for you too.

  • Quicklook hanging Finder

Without any software update or indeed material change of any kind to one of my iMacs, I'm suddenly in a situation whereby QuickLook hangs Finder when it tries to provide a preview of any given file type. I'm temporarily turn off preview from the Finder/View Options to allow the Mac to carry on, but would like to solve the underlying problem.
Looking at the logs, I'm guessing this is the underlying problem as it repeats the same error log entry once per second.
    10/12/2014 18:10:16.538 com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.apple.quicklook[7943]) Service could not initialize: Unable to set current working directory. error=2, path=/tmp: 14B25: xpcproxy + 12907 [1227][1016C726-9ACF-3A24-9C51-A279F5C6B167]: 0x2

I've surfed through various other threads here and tried a few things, without success:
Terminal - "qlmanage -r" - this just hangs after saying "resetting quicklook d"
    Remove Preferences plist entries
Found an alias Data folder within Containers/com.apple.quicklook.ui.helper that apparently should be a regular folder - renamed/created accordingly
Would very much appreciate any advice to resolve.
    Thanks,
    Andy

Alright. I found another post and it fixed everything instantly. As soon as I ran the command in Terminal all icon previews came back. It’s a problem with the /tmp folder. The original post is here. Such a feeling of relief.
    Open Terminal and run:
    sudo mkdir /private/tmp
    followed by
    sudo chmod 0777 /private/tmp

  • 15-minute restarts and hanging finder

Help!  I've been trying all the solutions I can find in these and other boards and so far nothing has worked.
Yesterday, while I had several applications open, I right-clicked on an image file to open it with Photoshop and my whole system froze (although the audio for a YouTube video kept playing in the background, even though the picture hung.)  Now my system is taking approximately 15 minutes to restart and the finder is hanging for up to 5 or 10 minutes at a time for most mouse clicks.
I'm running 10.6.8 on a Mac Mini.  A few days an Excel file corrupted which I think might have been the first sign that something was wrong.  Every time I tried to click on the file the whole system would hang.
Here's what I've tried to so far:
Trashed Google Drive (by dragging the application into the trash)
    Trashed com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
    Trashed com.apple.finder.plist
    Repaired permissions multiple times
Booted in safe mode (in which the finder would still hang)
Ran several functions in Spring Cleaning 10 - file checker, launch services rebuilder, permissions fixer, system cache cleaner
Ran a couple of terminal commands that I found in a discussion about freezing finders
The restart sequence goes like this:
    Choose restart from menu
The "Are you sure" window comes up but the one minute timer is stalled and it takes several minutes to be able to click on "Restart"
All of the desktop goes away except the background image, which hangs for about two minutes.
    There is a chime
The apple screen appears for approximately 2.5 minutes
A blank white screen appears for approximately 2 minutes
A blank blue screen appears for approximately 3 minutes
A blank black screen appears for approximately 2.5 minutes
Another blank blue screen appears for about 1.5 minutes
The desktop background shows up without icons for approximately 1 minute
The desktop icons appear but are not function for another 1.5 minutes or so.
I've tried everything I can think of and desperately need help!  I've got a backup from a couple days ago, but my Mac Mini shipped without installation discs, so it's going to be a couple days before I can get a friends in the event that I need to reformat.  I'd really like to not have to do that if possible.
    Thanks in advance!!!

The (gray) discs that come with a Mac will only boot that type of Mac, and those built around the same time:
Unless your friend has the same model and build period, you need either a Retail Install disc (you can get one from the online Apple Store for $19.99) at http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard:
Or call AppleCare, give them your Mac's serial number, and they can send a replacement set of original discs (including iLife apps and the Apple Hardware Test for your Mac) for a nominal fee.

  • Hanging finder, software freezes, lack of console clues, Genius befuddled

For several weeks I have been experiencing the following problem:
    - A given program will freeze -- generally, this appears to be a browser or an SSB like Fluid or Prism.
    - At first, I will continue to be able to navigate around to other programs, and usually can even save documents and shut programs down. At some point, however, the entire system will freeze up.
    - This usually occurs when I try to close down the program that initially froze up. For instance: Let's say I have 2 Firefox windows open, each with 2 tabs, and one of those tabs freezes. After a period of still being able to navigate between tabs and windows, the whole program will freeze. I'll then try to do a force quit, either via the dock or the Apple menu icon. This invariably fails.
    - It has also occurred several times when I've put the computer to sleep by closing the display -- upon re-opening, this entire process begins.
    - Shortly after that the Finder freezes up and I need to manually force the computer to shut down. This is especially problematic when I have an external drive connected.
    - When this occurs I'm unable to launch Terminal to kill any troublesome programs by the kill [PID #] command.
+(Similar problems have come up in a number of different Discussion forums -- a complete list is at the end of this post.)+
In at least one forum -- which I now am having trouble finding -- there was a reference to difficulties with USB connections. I have been experiencing intermittent problems with USB connections to external mice and keyboards. This is generally solved by disconnected and reconnected several times.
_I've taken a wide range of steps to try and solve this, including_:
Totally reinstalling Snow Leopard from disk.
Trashing all my Fluid apps (through AppDelete, so I know everything is gone from preference panes, etc)
    Trashing Fluid
    Trashing Chrome
    Trashing Google Quick Search Box
    Trashing and reinstalling Quicksilver
    Turning off GeekTool
Removing the FireFound extension in FF and updated the Adobe plugin in FF.
Trashing the Launch Services preference file
Removing GrowlHelperApp, WeatherDock, MagiCal, and Precipitate from Login items.
Running Disk Utility (nothing showed up as being a problem).
    Cleaning User Cache.
    Cleaning System Cache.
    Removing temporary files.
    Flushing DNS cache.
I've also tried running Activity Monitor fulltime -- and didn't notice anything odd there.
    _Other pertinent details_:
The following continues to run as Login Items:
    ShoveBox
    WashingMachineHelper
    +Spanning Sync Notifier+
    +Logitech Control Center Daemon+
    Dropbox
    GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent
    IntegoStatusItemHelper
I've been running SN since August 09; this only began in the last several weeks.
    I run 1Password 3.
I have plenty of memory and plenty of free space on the HD (90GB).
That's all I can think of at the moment -- but obviously am willing to consider anything and provide any relevant info.
    +Obligatory Genius Bar rant+
After going through much of the above I made a Genius Bar appt. The Genius knew far, far less than I did about Macs, and I don't know much -- all I've done is poke around the Interweb. He didn't know what an SSB was, hadn't ever heard of Fluid or Quicksilver, didn't know it was possible to run scripts on the desktop via Geektool, etc. He essentially told me to run Disk Utility and if that didn't work to hope everything turned out alright. That was infuriating enough; what was even more frustrating was that he clearly hadn't spent any time whatsoever poking around Apple discussion forums so he could keep up on any ongoing issues. It was like when I brought in my iPhone because the update to iTunes 3 killed off its ability to pick up WiFi signals and drained its battery.
    +(Obligatory rant over.)+
    _Console details_
When this occurs, nothing shows up in the Console CrashReporter. In the regular log, one message usually displays over and over. A sampling:

  • Moving files from USB drive (iPod in disk mode) stops and hangs Finder

I’m having trouble trying to copy a load of music files from my iPod to my new MacBook. The iPod is in disk mode so I’m just using it to move a load of MP3 files from my old PC to my MacBook. They copied from the PC fine and are sat in a fold on the iPod (which I boot into disk mode and connect to my MacBook running Leopard 10.5.5).
The disks mount fine and I can read and playback the files, but when I start to copy them to my MacBook after a minute or too the progress bar stops and it just sits there. I have thousands of file that I need to move and even tried to move say 100 at a time, but after the first few hundred it just stops again.
I have to force quit the finder, but this then hangs the finder unless I disconnect my iPod and then the finder starts back up but warns me that I have removed a driver without first ejecting it.
My iPod is a Video model 5.5 80GB which I connect via USB 2.0 to my MacBook. Anyone got any ideas why copying the files isn’t working?

Thanks for those suggestions. I have tried copying them one by one, but with over 6000 files it’s just not feasible to do this. I don't think adding more memory will help as my MacBook is the new Aluminum model with a 2.0GHz processor and 2GB. I have also tried connecting the same iPod to a Mac Pro with dual 2.8GHz processors, 4GB memory and a set of RAID hard drives and this also has the same problem as my MacBook.
Also, none of the files have any DRM protection.

  • Get Info window hangs Finder

    Hi,
when opening the Info window on one particular file, the Finder hangs:
    • The Info window is opened normally,
    • After one or two seconds the Info window starts flickering, as if being redrawn (with changing contents) very rapidly,
    • At this point, the Finder gets unresponsive and must be restarted.
This - so far - only happens with one file; this file is an OmniOutliner document with an .oo3 extension.
    Any ideas?
    TIA, Klaus

    Hi macjack,
thanks again. Here are the results to what you suggested: Opened the file in question, saved it in a different format (OPML); OPML file displays Info window fine. Then opened the OPML file, saved it in the original format to a different location - Finder hangs again.
Re Backup: I restored yesterday's version from Time Machine. (I only created the file yesterday.) The file was restored as a folder (without the .oo3 extension) containing one file! The file seems to be in the form of a package which contains one XML file. Adding the oo3 extension seems to restore the original file - and then the Finder hangs again.
In the meantime, I wrote an email to Omni support about this.
    Regards, Klaus

  • Importing Cisco VPN information into Finder VPN

    Hello,
I have recently upgraded to OSX Lion and the Cisco VPN Client used by my university no longer works. They suggest another client (Shrew Soft), which also doesn't work. What I'd like to be able to do is use the VPN configuration information provided by my institute with the Finder's own VPN capability, bypassing the need for a buggy client programm.
I've already read this thread, however it hasn't helped:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2274119?start=0&tstart=0
My problem seems to be that I need TWO files to configure Cisco correctly, a root certificate (which appears to be in .pem format) and a .pcf file. If I follow the "standard procedure" for importing the .pcf details -- that is, without using the root certificate somehow -- I get the message "The VPN server did not respond. Verify the server address and try reconnecting." Clearly I need somehow to be using BOTH files in order to establish a connection.
I have messed around with adding the root certificate to my System keychain, but the Finder doesn't display it when I go to "authentification settings". Instead I have only two certificates with "apple" in the name.
Even if I could add the root certificate successfully, this would surely be fruitless, as I would then no longer be using the shared secret.
SO, my query is: How can I combine both of these files into a single certificate that I can then add to my keychain and use for machine identification? Please bear in mind that I am not a computer specialist and am not au fait with Open SSL, and so forth. I'm prepared to grapple with it if it's the only way to get my VPN working again, but I will really need a very clear explanation of each step!
    Many thanks in advance!

  • Time Capsule "hangs" Finder

    Hello,
my Time Capsule started to become extremely unstable: it frequently becomes unavailable, i.e. if i try to open the disk, the Finder freezes and I have to reboot the Mac and the Time Capsule. Even Airport utility cannot open it (e.g. says "reading TC configuration", but freezes too). Most of the times i need to do a reset. Did soft, hard and factory reset, but the problem persists. Internet still works, however.
On my TC I have the backups managed by Time Machine and some working folders.
configuration: iMac with OSX Lion and 2GB TC connected wirelessly.
Thanks in advance for your support

configuration: iMac with OSX Lion and 2GB TC connected wirelessly.
    What model is the TC?
You stated in the profile .. Time Capsule 802.11n (3rd Gen)
Only the very last of the Gen3 came with 2TB disk.. if it is that old then the TC has now become unreliable.. they have a working life of around 3years.
If there are files you want to recover do a full factory reset and use ethernet to the TC.. place the files on USB drive.. then wipe the TC. (You can do it directly via a USB drive of 2TB plugged into the TC and begin an archive which should work ok still).
Wipe the drive in the TC and buy a new one.

  • Systematic deletion hangs Finder

We were supplied by the University with Systematic Anti-virus 10.2. Upon upgrading the system to 10.2, it began to pop up error messages when logging in.
My (stupid) impatient solution was to delete the application, and three files it created in /Library/StartupItems/
Well, next time I plugged in my External HD (standard mac partition with Time Machine backup files and other files, along with FAT32 partition for my Windows7 system), it began to try to scan the drive. This caused Finder to Hang.
I installed the updated Systematic, which is running like normal now. The problem is, Finder still hangs for a good minute every time I try to do ANYTHING with the Mac partition on the External. It seems to not affect the FAT32 partition. Tried to repair the disk with Disk Utility, but the error "Count not unmount drive" came up. Also, tried to open a video with Quicktime and some error (-32) came up.
Sorry that got long, complicated problem, and haven't found anything like this on other forums.
    Any Ideas?

If you look at what I posted, I tried to repair right after that, and the error came up. It is an external, nothing to install. Already reformatted, had no choice, Disk Utility would freeze, DiskWarrior freezes, as well as Ubuntu's diskutility freezes upon a FULL SMART status check.
left Apple's DU running for two hours, and this is what I have so far...

  • Accessing WebDAV volume from 10.4 hangs finder

I am trying to access a WebDAV volume on a 2003 server on my 10.4.4 iMac G5. If I connect to the server, I am asked to authenticate, at which point the volume mounts on the desktop, but the Finder hangs. If I look at the running processes using "top", I see that mount_webdav is taking up approx. 30% of my CPU. I can browse the volume from the command line without a problem.
    Suggestions?

OK, let's go with this. Several others are reporting the same problem:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=428639&tstart=0
    and
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=409444&tstart=0
And I've seen it, too. I originally reported this bug to Apple several months ago when 10.4.2 was released and here's my original posting: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=647624
So far, all I can say is the following:
    1. The error message is not related to permissions being set incorrectly. As you've found out (or seen in the previous postings), you can use POSIX permissions or Tiger's Effective Permissions model, which incorporates ACLs.
    2. The problem is specific to the Mac OS X 10.4.x Finder. Earlier Finders do not exhibit this problem. Attempting a copy (move or rename) via Terminal with cp, ditto, or mv is always successful.
    3. I believe that the problem is related to the client's checking of permissions against stored directory information (checking for masked AFP permissions). You're more likely to get this error with a client that's bound to the server's Open Directory domain than one that's not.
    4. I'm quite surprised that it's taken almost a year for this bug to really become discovered. I've noticed it right away and I think Apple has known about it for some time. I do think that the problem has gotten a little bit better with Mac OS X 10.4.4 and 10.4.5, but your mileage may vary.
I encourage you to keep posting details and filing Mac OS X Feedback reports (http://www.apple.com/feedback/server.html). Maybe we can find a solution or Apple will take notice.

  • USB transfer hangs, Finder freezes - cannot relaunch Finder

Is there a way to FORCE a relaunch of the Finder when it hangs during a USB transfer (to a mobile phone) ?
I use Relaunch Finder, Actitivity Monitor, etc, to no avail. The Finder will not re-launch.
Everything else works (such as this Safari use of Apple Forums).
Restarting the Mac is a drag.

    Eric,
I really thank you for your quick response. Before I try that, I need to explain something I just did- My time machine backup external hard drive is actually a guardian maximus 2 slot raid 1 setup to mirror so I have 2 disks. Before I do anything to reset time machine, I took that Guardian Maximus and tried to connect direct to my computer to read it. It would not recognize it. then I took out BOTH hard drives and tried to read them individually. Disk Utility said BOTH needed repair. The odd thing is that the Guardian lights did not turn red on either one- both lights green. Which is what its supposed to do. Any suggestions based on this information?
I really do appreciate all you in the forum provide.
