VRAM and Ram

According to DxDiag, i have 358MB of Vram. I have 3GB of regular ram, but lag on games that says it only needs 32MB of VRAM!!! Does anyone know any software on windows that could fix the memory or something? Or any other solutions

if there's mac software to fix it, then that'd be fine too

  • Upgrade MacBook - Hard Drive and RAM

I want to upgrade my daughter's early 2008 white MacBook - both internal drive and RAM.  I know how to install both and have done so before.  I have purchased the internal drive, the RAM and a large external drive for Time Machine backups now and for the future.  I also want to install Lion.  I'm not sure of the sequence...  Here is what I propose:
    1) format the new external hard drive and then back up the current internal drive using Time Machine.
    2) install the new RAM.
    3) install the new internal drive.
    4) boot up using Snow Leopard DVD.  Install OS 10.6
    5) upgrade to 10.6.8
    6) install Lion.
    7) import all of her applications, files, etc. from the Time Machine backup.
    8) done?
Is this correct - will all work?
    9) back up the new internal drive using Time Machine.
Will step #9 work when I select "Back Up Now" from the Time Machine?
    10) If yes, is her itunes account, etc. ready to use?  Can she sync iphone as before?
    Thanks.

I can make this easier for you:
    1) Download and install SuperDuper.
    2) Using SuperDuper, make a clone of the current internal drive to the large external.
    3) Test the clone by booting to the external drive
    4) If good, install the new internal drive.
    5) Boot from external, and use SuperDuper in reverse (clone back to new internal).
    6) When done, boot the mac normally.  Upgrade to Lion, and all should be good.

  • Scratch disks and RAM usage

i would like to understand the relationship between scratch disks and RAM usage in Photoshop.
While i was working on a fairly big psb file (2gb), photoshop kept prompting that I was out of memory, but in fact the utilization was only 75% (i had 16gbs total, photoshop was only using 7gb, and i allowed PS to use up to 14gb in total). when it says out of memory, it was actually my scratch disk at fault ( i only set 1 scratch disk, which was my 120gb SSD running out of space).
any idea how I can optimize PS to use up all my RAM first before even touching my scratch disk? (short of using a RAMdisk, please).
    thanks!

I am curious about this also. I just reinstalled W-7--have 11 G of physical memory--a ton of hard drive empty space also, and I have been wondering why PS_CC is so slow--since basically I have only put my Security and Browser in addition to Adobe back on the Dell XPS computer..... At least now it does show the downloading percentage (like .psd file) , but that must be what is happening.  I do think that some of these "frozen" screens I have been experiencing, was because the program was using scratch disk, instead of the Ram... I came up from CS-5, and can't describe it in detail, but just realize how slow PS-CC is in most everything.  Going back and see if reallocating will help...

  • How do I use my serial number to find information about my MacBook Pro's Processor and RAM?

So I want to find information about my MacBook Pro's processor and RAM using the serial number because the MacBook no longer works. I remember being able to find this information on the apple website before, maybe by using the coverage checker. Did they take this information out of the coverage checker? Is it no longer possible for a costumer to obtain this information?

Append the last three characters of it to http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/?search_keywords= and load the page.
This won't reveal how much RAM it currently has installed.

  • Lenovo Yoga 11s SSD and RAM Upgrade - Great Results

Picked up a Lenovo Yoga 11s from Best Buy.  I chose Best Buy for price, color, and processor.  They had a slightly better deal than Lenovo.com.  The clementine color looks great.  Quality is great.  I'm very happy with the purchase.  It has the i5 processor, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD.
I upgraded the SSD and RAM and found the upgrade relatively easy.  Here is a basic step by step and results.  (note the parts I chose increased the cost by close to $400.  I chose these parts based on quality, performance, and power usage.  There are cheaper alternatives, but I wanted an upgrade and money was not my concern.)
    Upgraded Parts
RAM - Patriot Memory 8GB PC3-12800 1600MHZ CL11 1.35V - Purchased at Newegg, but could have saved a couple dollars on Amazon.
I chose this part based on previous experience with Patriot and the low voltage RAM.  A lot of the RAM is higher voltage and I wanted to make sure I reduced heat and power usage.  When you look for 1.35V RAM, there are not a lot of options...
MSata SSD Drive - Intel SSD 525 Series 240GB Drive
    Intel SSD Page
    I purchased through Newegg
I chose the Intel drive based on previous experience with Intel.  They cost more, but I've found their performance to be good and reliability good.  There is also a good review on this drive on Tomshardware Tomshardware Intel 525 Review.  Toms review shows top performing drive and low power.  I also looked at many other manufacturers and Intel had the lower power consumption.  This means less heat and longer battery life.
    Cloning Software
Intel provides a free cloning software from Acronis
My Digital SSD MSata external case
    I purchased through Newegg.
Nice quality device.  I used this to help in cloning the OEM SSD to the new Intel drive.
    T5 Torx Screw Driver
I purchased this from Home Depot T5 Torx Home Depot
I read all the reviews, posts and issues around cloning the Win8 SSD drives.  Many people have/had issues.  I was prepared for problems.  Another reason I chose Intel, as they have migration software that I felt would be top notch.
You need to have the Hardware Manual handy.  I read how to remove keyboard and top cover.  This is required to upgrade RAM and SSD.  It was very easy.  Take your time.  Note, this is very different than the Yoga 13 youtube video for part removal.  I think it's easier.  Here is the link to download manual Yoga 11s Hardware Manual.
    How to clone your SSD
I expect if you're doing this project you can learn how to use the Intel software for cloning.  Read the web, watch their youtube video.  Read the manual...
Remove your factory SSD and insert new Intel SSD (note, you must insert Intel drive in notebook for cloning.  Do not try and clone on the USB external drive.  Intel software will not detect drive properly).  Create a bootable version of the Intel software on a USB drive.  Install your factory OEM SSD in the external MSata SSD drive.  Go to BIOS and set boot to support legacy, no fast boot, boot to USB.
Boot to the Intel Acronis app on the USB drive.  Then connect your OEM SSD via second USB port.
Then follow the wizard on Intel's software.  Cloning process took less than 5 minutes.
Unplug your USB devices, go to BIOS and set all all your boot settings back to factory UEFI, fast boot etc.
The PC booted to windows second try.  The first time it said it has issues and went through a process to repair.  It then said it failed.  I rebooted again and it went straight to windows.  Did all my windows updates and everything is fine.
    Performance
    Windows Performance Improvement
Memory - Factory score was 5.9 - Patriot Memory is 8.2 *** Nice Improvement
Hard Drive - Factory score was 6.2 - Intel 525 Drive is 8.2 *** Nice Improvement
This pc is crazy fast booting and shutting down.  It boots in 7 seconds.  Not sure it's really faster than OEM, but I've never seen a pc boot this fast.
Over all performance is fast.  I installed Office 2010 pro from a USB drive in under 5 minutes.  Web browsing is crazy fast.  I'm super impressed with the speed of this pc.  Much faster than I expected.
Size, Shape, Weight, color is great.  Performance is great.  Happy with upgrades and quality of parts.  May be my best notebook purchase to date.  I don't have any battery life numbers to report yet.  Everything is new and I haven't really spent much time off the charger.
Issues I've experienced during this upgrade of parts
I first tried to clone the SSD drive by putting the Intel drive in the USB enclosure first.  The intel software would not work as the PC detects the external SSD drive as a SCSI drive and Intel cloning software could not identify the drive as an Intel Sata drive.  I called Intel and they had no advice or help.  I also tried a few other cloning softwares that ultimately did not work.  As a last resort I switched the drives and everything worked great.  Lesson learned, swap the drives first and use Intel software to clone.
Factory restore - doesn't work.  Not sure why the factory restore is not working on my new Intel drive.  Windows works great!  All the partitions are there.  I suspect I messed up the OEM restore portion of the drive.  At one point I thought I had booted to the Intel drive, and tried the restore (I had about 7 failed cloning tries before the final one worked as I outlined above).  It went through the restore process and then failed.  However, what I later found was that I had actually booted to the OEM drive in the external USB case and I may have corrupted the restore functionality.
I contacted Lenovo Support and explained I could not restore using the 1 key restore.  They walked me through some basic troubleshooting and then opted to mail me factory restore disk.  I have the disk and will keep them available for when/if I ever need to restore.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I upgraded from the Yoga 13 to the 11S and am happy to report that the machines are so identical that apparently you can just yank the SSD from one and drop it in the other. I had upgraded my 13" to 240gB SSD + 8gB RAM and simply plopped the two components into the 11S and after about 30 seconds of Windows alerting me that it was 'setting up devices' the machine booted normally and has been working perfectly since!

  • Hard drive and Ram switch

Can I add the hard drive and ram of a dual usb ibook to a clamshell ibook?

    The hard drive will work.
The RAM may work but some PC133 RAM will not work at 66 MHz (the bus speed of the clamshell).

  • My Mid 2009 Macbook pro (Just purchased) will not turn on after hard drive change and ram upgrade

So i purchased a mid 2009 Macbook Pro from a guy with 4 gb of ram and 250gb hard drive. It worked perfectly fine when i booted it with his hard drive and ram installed.
I spilled beer in my old computer (late 2009 15" 500gb hard drive and 8gb ram) but took the hard drive to get tested and it worked fine. i later found out it was from a 2010.
Like an idiot i assumed the pro i just purchased would be able to handle the same upgrades that were in my old computer so i threw in the 500gb hard drive (2010) and the 8gb of ram.
The thing booted up fine, just a bit slow which i chalked up to my hard drive sitting unplugged for a long time.
After about 3 minutes it crashed on me. Confused i replaced the 4gb of original ram back into it. (the 8gb ram was pny i bought from ebay so i thought it could be that) It decided not to turn on or show any lights on the front except for the battery meter.
After this i replaced the original hard drive and still NO LUCK!! im really mad because i am in desperate need of the information on my original 500gb hard drive and im afraid i have destroyed 2 computers and about $1K worth of cash out the window.
HELP please enlighten me on what i have done and if the situation can be fixed.

UPDATE: Problem solved with the old hard drive in it, Now the less pressing issue:
Will the computer run my 500gb hard drive with all my information on it? I need to forward a resume and it is on that hard drive.

  • HI, I HAVE A MacBook Pro 2.3GHz dual-core Intel i5 AND I WAN'T TO UPGRADE THE HARD DRIVE UP TO 750GB AND ALSO THE RAM MEMORY TO 8GB. WHAT SPECIFIC MODEL OF HARD DRIVE AND RAM MEMORY SHOULD I BUY??? THANKS

HI, I HAVE A MacBook Pro 2.3GHz dual-core Intel i5 AND I WAN'T TO UPGRADE THE HARD DRIVE UP TO 750GB AND ALSO THE RAM MEMORY TO 8GB. WHAT SPECIFIC MODEL OF HARD DRIVE AND RAM MEMORY SHOULD I BUY??? THANKS

No need to type in all caps - we HEAR you!
I would take a look at the internal drives offered by both Crucial (click the link "Internal Hard Drives Now Available") and OWC. I would stay away from Western Digital drives as they seem to have problems on a number of Mac models.
You can also shop for RAM at Crucial and OWC - just select the System Scanner tab at the Crucial website to find out which memory is right for your machine.
    Good luck,

  • Does it void my warranty to upgrade the hard drive and ram in a MacBook?

Recently a new store in my local mall called Peachmac opened. They do repairs and upgrades. I went there to see about a hard drive and RAM upgrade. They told me if I do it myself, it voids the warranty. I have about 8 months of Apple care left on my Mac and don't want to loose it. My real question is does it void your warranty even though the instruction booklet specifically tells you how to do it? The reason I'm wondering this is because they want $69 an hour plus money for parts. They quoted around $125-$150 (for a 500GB HD and 4GB of RAM). Is this an ok deal? Or should I go for an SSD? I saw Crucial was doing a bundle for a 128GB SSD and 4GB of RAM at my local CompUSA. Which one is a better deal? Thanks!

If you replace the memory, it doesn't void your warranty, but the warranty will be voided if you replace the hard drive

  • Questions regarding Hard Drive and RAM upgrade

I just purchased a Macbook white (Late 2006 model) for my son off ebay. I know next to nothing about hard drives and RAM.
I only paid $400 for this thing so I'm willing to put some extra cash into it.
What is the maximum hard drive I can put in this thing? Also, does the size of the hard drive depend on the amount of RAM I can put in it?
Like I said, I dont know very much about this stuff at all. Could someone please give me specific examples of the size hard drive & RAM I can put in.
    Thank you.

Replacing the Hard Drive and RAM is very easy. Apple has a PDF file with instructions for replacing a hard drive and RAM. You'll need a #0 phillips screwdriver for the "L" bracket and a Torx 6 driver for the caddy screws.

  • Hard Drive and RAM errors

I have a 2010 macbook pro (unibody design). I bought it on craigslist to fix and it needed a HDD and RAM. I purchased DDR3 RAM for it and sometimes it beeps 3 times during POST and sometimes it boots up fine. I m running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) so I downloaded the mountain lion installer from the app store. When I click on the disk "Macintosh HD" to install it, i says the disk has "S.M.A.R.T. errors-the disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired". The disk installed snow leopard off my CD and it worked fine in the PC that I took it from before I formatted it. Also sometimes when I pick up the laptop, It will shut down and not turn back on! Does anybody have any idea what is wrong with my computer? I am trying to fix it up to sell it but it is not letting me install mountain lion. Thank you!

It Shows A Tonne Of "SAM Multimedia" Errors
Do you have Symantec Antivirus for Macintosh (SAM) installed? If so, it's likely your troublemaker if, as the others have pointed out, you really have the proper install disks. Get rid of SAM--it does more harm than good.
You'll probably have to boot from a system fisk to get access to SAM and neuter it enough for removal. Google this:
    symantec antivirus removal tool mac
You'll find a tonne of sites that have removal instructions.

  • MacBook Pro 17" Hard Drive and RAM suggestions

Hi, I want to but the new 17" MacBook Pro with 3.06GHz processor.
I am still unsure whether to choose 4GB or 8GB RAM as well as whether to choose SSD or HDD.
This MacBook will be used to develop iPhone apps, so I would want to have it speedy. On the other hand, I do not want to pay very much extra to get a slight noticeable improvement in speed. What I mean by this is that if 4GB of RAM is more than enough to develop apps then I will most likely not see a huge difference between having 8GB or 4GB of RAM.
I would appreciate to hear some opinions about both SSD and RAM size and whether it is wise to upgrade considering current prices.
    Thanks in advance,
P.S. I want to order Antiglare film. Does anyone know about any of its disadvantages, or is it a pure benefit?

For what you described you want to do, 4GB RAM is plenty, and a fast 7200 RPM drive is fine. As for the anti-glare, if you don't want the distraction of sometimes having to see light sources behind you or reflections, get the anti-glare. The glass/glossy screen has more vibrant colors and deeper blacks, but you will get some reflection some time. Your eyes learn to ignore that quite quickly, but some people don't like it.
Unless you're doing heavily intensive app development, and maybe doing video/audio, 8GB is not worth it, and the SSD is even more not worth it. iPhone apps are not that demanding in terms of pure power.

I have CC and while attempting Light Effects, the Light Effects Layer will appear in the layers panel, but the option bar will not appear and neither will the Properties panel. All my preferences are set correct, and my computer has a compatible video card and RAM. Please help!
I tried to delete the layer attempt again. I am in a Photoshop class, but the work is all online, so all my teacher is going to do is send me to this site. I am trying to edit a photo for this class, and without this working, i go to filter>render>light effects. the bar and panel will pop up for about 2 seconds, then disappear. How do i get the options bar and properties panel to display?

I was about to suggest resetting LE from the Workspace drop-down top right corner, but if you can't see the Options Bar, I guess that is not going to happen.  The normal Tool reset is grey out for LE, so it might be a case of resetting Preferences.
    Reset Preferences
Windows — Hold down Shift Ctrl Alt immediately after starting Photoshop
Mac — Hold down Shift Cmd Opt immediately after starting Photoshop

  • Kernel Power error after Win 7 and RAM upgrade

    Hello,
I posted earlier on the subject of win7 and ram upgrades.  I did both and it seemed to go fine.  I did the ram first ... replaced a 667Mhz 1gb with a 800Mhz 2gb.  A couple of days later the computer just shut itself down and restarted.  Since then it has done it another 5 times, seemingly at random.  Yesterday I decided to spend some time looking into it and found the 'event log'.  All the shutdowns are recorded as 'critical'.  A search on the web/here showed other occurences of the fault associated with drivers as much as anything.
After I did the win update I did update almost every driver with ones from this site.
Other than the shutdowns the only issues I have which are of very mild concern are the length of time the fingerprint reader takes to be present and that occasionally the cursor is unavailable for about a minute after logging on. When you try and control it it jumps about anywhere but where you want it to go.   I rolled back the alps driver and that seems to have sorted the cursor issue.
So, details of the shutdown from the event log are as follows.
    Log Name:      System
    Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power
    Date:          16/01/2011 16:21:31

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
There's more (I've shown it all below) but it's not that important.  When I looked into it I found details of the problem on the microsoft knowledge base.  Its described here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504.
I believe I fit into scenario 3 for cause and resolution.
So, it seems that win7 and mixed speed ram may be a problem on some computers ... probably only a tiny number, but it looks like the HP3507 is one of them.  I did see somewhere that I could down speed from 667 to 266 which might help with memory compatability but I can't see anywhere on the the insydeH20 bios where to do it.  BIOS is version F18 .... upgraded from F15 as part of the Win7/RAM ugrade.
Before I swap back to the 'old' memory I'll see if anybody here can come up with any ideas.  It may be that I have to sell off the expensive 2gb memory (ddr2 800mhz 200 pin) for £39.99 from maplin at a bargain price and get 2gb of 667Mhz from somewhere.
The full 'detail' regarding the fault is below.
    Bye for now.

    Hi DWeiland and Schwede,
Thanks for your replies. Yes I did the runtime engine registry change and also mass compiled the LV7.1 folder and my sourcecode. I still see the problem as I have set the LV adapter as Lv 7.1.1 runtime engine. Now I have changed it to LV7.1 development system. With this setting, it is not giving any error. Thus I don’t see any problem now. The older version of the code had the adapter as the runtime engine for some reason, now I have changed the setting to the development system. I hope that it shouldn’t be a problem.
    Thanks again!
    Thank you,
    Sasi
