VRAM issues

When I opened ASP for a non-related issue in noticed that the VRAM was listed as 48MB when the card (ATI Redeon 9000 Mobile) is supposed to be 64MB. Despite many searches on other froums and on the net I could not find any suggetstions. I reset the PRAM and the symptoms returned. After I did a hard reset on the power manager ASP showed 32MB of VRAM, after a later restart the VRAM went back to 48MB. I have just done a clean install of the OS (currently 10.2, haven't done the upgrade yet) and the problem still showes. I still have to run Classic so I have to install 10.2, then 9.2.2, then 10.4. The same 48MB displays in Classic ASP, even if I boot into OS 9. Any suggestions?
PowerBook G4 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hi, Matt. In two years of reading these Tibook forums daily, I've never seen your problem reported before. If ASP is right, it sounds as though part of your VRAM has failed, and more is teetering on the edge.
Interesting and puzzling to me is the fact that on your Powerbook, unlike my own 1GHz Tibook, Apple System Profiler in OS 9.2.2 and 10.4.3 evidently reports how much VRAM is installed. On my machine, ASP (in 9.2.2 and 10.3.5) reports nothing whatsoever about VRAM, and never has. Are you sure ASP is reporting your installed VRAM, and not something else? I don't even see a place for reporting that in the versions of ASP that I have.
Through the years I've learned to take ASP with a grain of salt when it reports anomalous findings, like processor and bus speeds that I know are incorrect. I always double-check such surprising readouts with some other utility before believing ASP. Have you tried running your Apple Hardware Test disk or TechTool Pro and seeing what it thinks about your VRAM?

Photoshop can only see what your video card driver reports.
You might want to update your video card driver from the GPU maker's website.

  • G4 Mini and VRAM issue?

    I have a G4 1.25 machine with 1gig RAM running 10.4.11
It seems the video might have issues.
A friend of mine told I could clear the VRAM.
When I "click" on folders or even a window that has been minimized, it takes several seconds before it opens. Additionally, I live with the "spinning beach ball" all the time now. This poor little thing is really running slow. I'd wipe the HD and start over, but my System Disk is 10.4 and I don't want to end-up with Safari 4.
I've run Disk Repair from my System Disk, but no change.
It acts just like PC that has tons of Spyware on it...
    Any ideas ???

There are several things you can do. First, find your original OS X disks, and probably the first one says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Insert it and reboot while holding the option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted, choose the extended test. Or if you have either of the TechTool programs, they'll do similar tests. Does this point out any hardware issues?
Next, download OnyX from http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/download.html . Do the tasks on the cleaning and maintenance menu's. Before doing any disk maintenance, you should have a backup of your system. A number of people with beach balling systems have used OnyX to clean things up and have been pleasantly surprised at the performance improvement.
Next, you need at least 10% to 15%, or more, of your hard drive empty. If it's fuller than that, system performance will really decline.
You can't clear VRAM, beyond shutting the machine down. Perhaps your friend was thinking of resetting PRAM, which is very different.

  • Color 1.0.4 update not working - vram issue?

so i just updated Color via software update to 1.0.4 - i try to open it, and it's telling me that i need 124mb vram - ? Now color won't open at all. do i have any options of salvage? or do i have to re-install? ****...

You will be asking the machine to do more than it is really capable of. "Overclockers" do this kind of thing to play games faster -- not really a professional approach.
Overstressing the cards will lead to early burnout, but operationally, the most likely result is unpredictable behaviour, renders with artifacts, random crashes, that sort of thing.
From an operator's point of view, even MacBookPro is not the preferred choice of platform unless its the full HD-monitor version. Normally, the displays on MacBooks are too small to even accommodate the User Interface-- let alone present any kind of meaningful rendition of the media under correction.

  • VRAM issue on mackbook pro (bootcamp)

So i installed windows on my macbook successfully to play a couple games and run a couple of programs. the problem is i only have 64mb of VRAM allocated to my gpu while i should have 384mb (i have 4gb ram and upgrading to 8). is there a way to fix this?
    SPECS:
    Macbook Pro late 2011
    Intel Core i5 2.4ghz
4gb RAM soon upgrading to 8

Once you have XP installed, it is independent of BC. My suggestion is to try the 4.0.4033 drivers.
From Bootcamp.xml file for 4.0.4033 (there is also a 64-bit version in the same package).

  • ITunes 7 Rendering Issues

    Ahoy hoy,
    I became entangled in this problem upon first running iTunes;
Running it for the first few minutes, all is fine, tick-tock, no problems so far.
    Then...
If one is inclined to switch applications, to say Firefox etc., hide iTunes, and then switch back to iTunes upon revealing it from that wonderful hiding place that is apple+h, it comes out all DICOMBOGULATED... of which a preview can be seen:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/duffin-tim/243757719/
It renders the interface all like, nineteen-eightees-Commador64-loading-a-game-up-like (I can post more previews of the glitch, some of them look pretty cool); what is the meaning of this?, am I alone in this problem? Coming to mind is a VRAM issue, but I am not one to speculate on such topics as it's not my professional area.
    Toogy Boogy,
    Tim D.
    iBook G4 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Sun-spotted monitor; ladybird stickers; fadded 'S' key; burnt-out not working firewire; all else's d

I have seen some wierd GUI rendering issues as well, notably, this one:
    http://www.n715dp.com/links/itunes7gui.jpg
I can replicate this happening by closing the window (leaving the application running) and then opening it up again. The only way to make it go away is to click on the iTunes Store source and then back on my library again.

  • Pink & White Vertical Lines followed by a blurred screen iMac(A1312).

Hello everyone, I have a iMac(A1312) since over 3 years now and hence not under warranty.
The problem is it displays white and pink lines on the screen with an apple logo:
    followed by this screen:
I've gone the forums which state this is common problem for a lot of PC's apple shipped out during the 09-10 period,
however my Mac is not under warranty anymore. So Apple support told me that it's not covered under the replacement program.
I've been fleeced at my local apple store a couple of times for something I later realized was a very small problem, so I would like to replace it myself.
While I'm certain this is a GPU problem and would most likely be fixed if I just swapped it with a new one, I want to make sure if it is exactly that.
I don't want to be in a situation where I pay a bomb for a GPU and still do not end up fixing the problem.
Also, Is it possible to use any nVidia GPU (As is the case with Windows PC's, where just about any GPU works) or do I have to look for a Mac specific/compatible one?
Any help would be hugely appreciated.
    Warm Regards,
    Rishav S

I have the same issue on my iMac 27" i7 late 2009 with ATI Radeon HD 4850.
Booting in safe mode is the only way to use it but the system can't do much and it's really slow.
From my findings it's for sure a GPU or VRAM issue so I've just bought a spare GPU board to replace the fault one.
Reballing could also solve this issue but usually you need also a new ATI GPU as well.
I'm not sure about nVidia GPU but it seems that you can replace it with a more powerful ATI Radeon HD 6970M card (if you use games to take advantage of it).
Your post is one year old and probably you already solved the issue so would be nice if you could share your solution for it.
    best regards,
    Franco

  • 2014 Macbook Pro Nvidia 750m GPU Kernel Panics

    Hello everyone,
After a long battle w a Mac Pro and Davinci Resolve, I moved to a 2014 15.4 Macbook Pro Retina i7 2.7ghz with Nvidia 750m and Intel Iris (dual gfx). Any time I do anything strenuous, such as video editing or color correction, the laptop heats up to between 80 and 100c, the case becomes almost too hot to touch and it eventually kernel panics with the following, along always a GPU based panic. I just performed a PRAM reset w Apple Tech support, but that isnt helping the heat \ kernel panic issue. It occurs after mere minutes in Adobe Premiere Pro, Davinci Resolve, or anything else GPU accelerated. I already confirmed that auto switching was enabled, but I also disabled it to try without success.
Any suggestions? This laptop is 14 days old, so I now need to deal w repairs :/ Does this kernel panic indicate a GPU or GPU VRAM issue? I tested my system RAM with Rember and it passed, also passed Apple's basic HW test.
    Huge thanks!
    Jason

  • I turn on my a1300 camera then suddenly its lcd screen turns green..why?

i turn on my a1300 camera then suddenly its lcd screen turns green.. icons on the screen is in color green and its larger than the usual size of the icon...

Hi, sounds like Graphic card or VRAM issue. Does it get better once warmed up?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode).

  • Files missing & audio breakup

Seems everything is hitting me today, suddenly I get a "No Vram" available. I have a relatively new iMac (2011) and restarted and vram issue was gone but I lost files in a project, both audio and video and can't seem to reconnect with them. Audio is narration track and continues to break up every few seconds.

Do you have audio if you play them using QT Player?
Is there an audio wave form if you drop them into a timeline?
What are the properties of the files (using get info from within QT player)? ie does that show an audio component?

  • Which is better for 3 displays, the 5870 or the 7950?

I have a Radeon 5770 in a 2010 3.33 6 core. I have a 30" Samsung 305T running at 2560x1600 (DL DVI) and a 1080p HDMI monitor running off a MDP->HDMI adaptor. Even this seems tenuous as occasionally one or both monitors need some cajoling to fire up. Some research on this is giving me the idea that this could be either a power draw issue or a VRAM issue on the 5770, and while it may have 3 ports, in practical terms it's probably hard to get them all to work because of the card's other limitations. I know some people have better results using powered adaptors.
I also have been using a DisplayLink USB adaptor to get a 3rd monitor (17" DVI) going but this requires a considerable amount of the Mac CPU.
I'm looking into either a 5870 or a 7950 upgrade to make the monitor situation I do have more reliable, less drain on the CPU, and to be able to hook my 3rd (or possibly even 4th) monitor without resorting to DisplayLink.
I RARELY do gaming, so high frame rates are not my criteria. I'm an audio professional and run Logic Pro on all my screens. What I want is reliability, a quiet fan, and no-hassles with multiple monitors at high resolutions.
Any suggestions as to which card is best for my purposes? Thanks.

You do not need a new graphics card, you need to understand what AMD is doing with Mini DisplayPort.
The levels on Mini Displayport are much lower than older protocols. Mini DisplayPort can be requested to produce backward compatible protocols, but there is not enough POWER to run two at the required levels. It needs ACTIVE adapters (with signal boosters) to convert more than one. Third party Mini Displayport to Single-Link DVI costs about US$35.
What are the basic requirements for connecting multiple displays?
Connecting multiple monitors for AMD Eyefinity technology couldn’t be simpler. There are four easy rules to remember:
The first two monitors can connect to the graphics card with any display output on your product: HDMI, VGA, DVI or DisplayPort.
The third (or greater) display must be connected to the graphics card via DisplayPort.
If your monitor does not have a DisplayPort connection, you will need an inexpensive active DisplayPort adapter for it. DVI to DP adapters can be had for less than $30 USD.2
Every family of GPUs supports a different maximum number of displays.

  • Video Still Glitches in iPhoto 6.0.1 under 10.4.5

In iPhoto editing mode, selecting a portion of the picture like you are going to crop it often results in the video briefly glitching the whole picture. The easiest way to reproduce this is by grabbing somewhere near the upper left of your picture and dragging off the bottom right of it going over the zoom slider before letting go of the mouse button. This is the normal way I would go about cropping a picture many times that causes the video glitch. I would imagine this is a 256 VRAM issue again, but let's hear it. Thanks.

I have a dvd project that has more than 60 minutes of
video in it, and iDVD wants to switch to 90 minute
mode, but when I click on the 90 minute button or 60
minute button when the window pops up, nothing
happens, and I have to end up killing the process.
This used to work, whats going on?
.. could be because you have updated to QuickTime 7.x
iDVD came out in the days of OS 10.2.2 and QT 6.x - I'm not at all surprised it isn't working well with 10.4.6 and QT 7.x

  • A Positive-Negative Experience

With all the ongoing discussion about issues with MBPs and support, I thought I would share my story with the group...
I pre-ordered an MBP the day after they were announced. I was delighted with the upgrade to a 2.0 GHz chip at no charge and received my machine in very late February (only a few days late, all things considered).
Unlike many of my colleagues on these boards, I didn't have the CPU whine and the machine had only the slightest hint of noise from the inverter (which I didn't notice for weeks). All in all, I was very, very happy.
One week ago, however, I noticed a series of purple pixels in the lower right corner of the screen. While they appeared to be 'stuck', they disappeared at lower color depths and created a yellow 'smudge' that moved with Finder windows placed over them. After some research, some attempts to remember my programming training, and some online digging, it appeared that the video ram on the logic board had developed a problem.
This diagnosis was confirmed by the MacGenius at my local Apple Store; he was genuinely amazed as he had never seen anything like it. He typed copious notes into the repair order (even allowing me to review them) and off it went. Four business days later, my machine was back.
Things went downhill from here. I turned on the machine and immediately saw the pixel anomaly. Logging into a guest account I created for Apple, I noticed two things... 1) the desktop background had been changed, and 2) the brightness had been lowered to 50%, both designed to hide the anomaly. What happened, it appears, is that the technician at the repair depot ignored the comments, and decided to replace the LCD screen and backing, which he did (leaving tacky residue on the screen's edge) and, realizing that he had just wasted a perfectly good LCD, attempted to cover his tracks. I was not happy, at all.
Enter the Apple Store manager. He was very nice, managed to calm me down, and apologized for the error. He said that the machine could be sent back to the repair depot (no thanks) or that he could talk to Apple Care about getting me a replacement machine (it was a CTO so he could not replace it from store stock). He then pulled out a red phone (seriously) and twenty minutes later sent me on my way with assurances that I would receive a new machine and a $50 credit to my account for my trouble.
This morning, I received an email from Apple with an RMA and a new order #, and an additional email with a FedEx label. I dropped my machine off at FedEx and then called Sales Support, as instructed.
The representative there was incredibly nice, looked up my order, apologized for the inconvenience, and indicated that as FedEx hadn't yet scanned the package into their system he couldn't "release my order", but that as soon as FedEx showed receipt of the returned machine (not delivery, just that they had it in their possession) my replacement order would be released for manufacture.
Assuming all goes well at the FedEx station (knock on wood), my order should be released for manufacture tomorrow and I should have a replacement machine within a week.
Hopefully this machine will be in good working order (no LCD issues, no whine, no CPU noise - though I will just install the widget for that and be done with it if it comes to it), but I have to say despite the irritation of having a defective machine and a repair technician who mangled instructions that "a moron in a hurry" could understand, I feel good about my order with Apple and the way I have been treated.
They recognized the problem, admitted their fault, and are working (hard I think) to make it right. And if, 30 years after their founding, they still care about their customers, then I can only say: Happy Birthday.
To those of you out there with problematic machines, talk to the reps, be firm but polite, and ask them to make it right for you...I suspect they will.

Sorry for the delays in updating this...
My second MBP arrived on Tuesday... I was able to reinstall my system in about an hour and other than the maddening 10.4.6 related .Mac sync issues, all is well. This machine runs cooler than the previous one and doesn't have the VRAM issue. It does have one stuck pixel (sob), but it is thankfuly in the upper right hand corner and not visible when the screen is black (which my desktop picture is, so it doesn't bother me).
I called AppleCare and was able to easily move my Apple Care contract over to the new machine (and they even changed the start date from the date my first machine was sent to me to the date of the second, which was nice).
All told...I'm pretty satisfied with the way I have been treated by Apple. I have yet to see the $50 credit to my credit card, but that could take a little while... I was sans-MBP for about 10 days, but walked away with a newer (Week 13) machine that works...
Moral of the story: be firm but polite. Ask for a replacement if you need it. And work with Apple's reps. You'll get a good outcome.

  • TS1538 iPad not turning on. Vertical colored lines followed by a black screen. Help!

My iPad is a little less than a year old. While playing a game on my iPad, multicolored vertical lines appeared across left side of iPad followed by a black screen. After a few seconds the screen flicked back on....then a few more vertical colored lines and completely black screen again.  Initially when pushing home button I heard Siri but after attempting several times to restart iPad, soon I no longer heard Siri and screen was just completely black and iPad seems to be dead. Battery was at 60%. I attempted to plug into wall and charge anyway, but that did nothing. I also attempted to plug into iTunes but iPad screen remains black and isn't recognized by computer or iTunes. (No apple logo shows up...nothing) Resetting by holding home button and reset switch for 10 seconds isn't working...I tried over and over holding both buttons for way over 10 seconds. Please help....is it dead? Anything else I can try on my own?

I have the same issue on my iMac 27" i7 late 2009 with ATI Radeon HD 4850.
Booting in safe mode is the only way to use it but the system can't do much and it's really slow.
From my findings it's for sure a GPU or VRAM issue so I've just bought a spare GPU board to replace the fault one.
Reballing could also solve this issue but usually you need also a new ATI GPU as well.
I'm not sure about nVidia GPU but it seems that you can replace it with a more powerful ATI Radeon HD 6970M card (if you use games to take advantage of it).
Your post is one year old and probably you already solved the issue so would be nice if you could share your solution for it.
    best regards,
    Franco

  • "House of mirrors" bug with cover flow

Anyone else having this? House of mirrors with cover flow.
It appears to be a redrawn / VRAM issua. I'm running iTunes 7 on an iBook G3 500 (with 8MB of VRAM). If I choose to thousands of colors or lower the resolution, things work fine.
However, I haven't heard anyone reporting anythin like this. It's also happening in an iMac G3 500.

Indeed, it's showing off Mac OS graphic capabilities
Anyways, I the computer isn't able to display cover flow, it should appear a warning of some kind. I want to be able to use iTunes 7 even if I can't use cover flow.
