VRAM requirements

Im planning to buy a macbook for video editing. What exactly are the vram requirements for doing this? Does Vram only affect 3d applications such as games, or does it apply to all forms of video. And would 64mb be enough?
thanks

I assume that since you're asking this question in the Final Cut Pro forum, your editing program will be FCP. Currently, only Motion relies on the video card, the other apps included in the Studio package are far more dependent on processor speed and RAM. There's a list of Motion compatible video cards here: http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs.html?motion
Also note that FC Studio is NOT supported on the MacBook, but is on the MacBook Pro.

  • Installing CS6 Partially Due to Requirements

I'm planning on getting CS6 Design & Web Premium, however at the moment my VRAM does not meet the requirements (512mb). I'm pretty sure this requirement is for Photoshop Extended, which I actually don't need to install (I'll continue to use my CS4 version of that for now). The main programs I need are Dreamweaver, Fireworks, etc, which if I look at them as sold individually, don't have the VRAM requirement. So... what I'm wondering is if I can install everything else other than Photoshop Extended without having the VRAM requirement, or will the CS6 installer shut me out completely?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

You should be able to customize the installation and choose to only install the programs you wish to use.  Please check the system requirements though for each of the individual applications to make sure you meet their minimum requirements as well.

For the Pro line, the product pages do tell you how much VRAM they have.
For the Air line, the Apple tech note that mende1 posted does tell you how much VRAM is available for a given amount of system RAM installed on those machines.

  • Photoshop CS6 requirement changes for 3D

I started a project in CS6 with 3D layers, overnight I updated my software and now I can't use 3D. From what I have read it is because of new system requirements but I can not upgrade my computer just to finish project. Is there a way to finish this project with 3D?

The 512 VRAM requirement for video card was tightened up during one update.   You only option is to roll back to previous version, or upgrade card.

  • No 3D options show up in Photoshop CS6... at all!

    Hi everyone,
The title says it all really: I've been trying recently to use the 3D features in CS6 (not a usual part of my workflow, which is probably why it has taken me so long to notice) but all options are grayed out, regardless of the document settings, layer options etc. I simply cannot work in 3D at all! I am working on a Mac Pro (mid 2010) with 13 Gb of ram, so system resources are not the issue. Any help or suggestions you can give would be greatly appreciated!

You can go back to version 13.0.1 of CS6 to run the 3D features with 256 MB VRAM.

Do you know if 13.1.1 has additional features for 3D vs previous versions or is it just the vram requirement update only?
13.1.1 is supposed to have minor enhancements to 3D features. However, and importantly, the word is that it has bug fixes relative to 13.0.1. Adobe will not tell us what the fixes are, for some unfathomable reason. And, yet again, my posts vanish while Cox is posting in the forum.

  • FAQ: What is the Photoshop CS6 13.0.2 update? What is the 13.1 update?

    What updates have been released?
Photoshop CS6 has two new updates: 13.0.2 and 13.1. The 13.0.2 update is available only for Mac users and updates the user interface to be Retina compatible. The 13.1 is for Creative Cloud subscribers and adds new features to Photoshop CS6.
How do I get the updates?
Simply go to Help > Updates to launch the Adobe Application Manager (AAM) to start the download process. You may already have an AAM notification to install these updates waiting in your task bar. You can also download and install the 13.0.2 update from here:
    Photoshop 13.0.2 update for CS6
Don't see the updates in AAM? Make sure the Adobe Application Manager is updated to 6.2 or later.
    Windows
    Mac OS
Note: Using this update patch will install the latest version of AAM, which may be greater that 6.2.
      Additionally,
Updates not available for Creative Cloud products
What is the availability of these updates?
The 13.0.2 update is available only for Mac OSX version 10.6 or later. The 13.1 update is only available to Creative Cloud subscribers (including Creative Cloud single-app membership, i.e. subscribing to Photoshop only), but it is for both Windows and Macintosh.
Some of the Photoshop CS6 System Requirements have changed in order to allow for the features in the 13.1 update.
Windows XP and Vista are no longer supported.
The video card VRAM requirements have gone up to 512 MB.
    For more information, see:

Heads Up: Photoshop System Requirement Changes
Error: "Graphics hardware not officially supported" occurs in Photoshop 13.1 (Subscription Edition)
Do I need to install both updates?
No, the 13.1 update also includes the Retina display enhancements added with 13.0.2. So on the Mac platform, you will only be asked or are required to install the 13.1 update if you are a Creative Cloud subscriber.
What are the new features added for Creative Cloud subscribers in 13.1?
There have been many new features added to Photoshop CS6, including:
Smart Object support for Blur Gallery and Liquify — Enjoy the creative freedom to experience non-destructive editing with Blur Gallery and Liquify now that both features offer Smart Object support.
Conditional Actions — Speed up image processing by creating Conditional Actions. These commands use logic to automatically choose among different Actions based on rules that you establish.
Crop tool refinements — User-inspired enhancements to the Crop tool allow you to work smarter.
Copy CSS — Quickly export Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) markup for text and objects, potentially saving hours of work translating your Photoshop designs into web code.
Load color swatches from HTML or CSS — Import color swatches so that you can easily design incredible websites.
Improved Type Styles — Ensure consistent type formatting across multiple documents by defining shareable default styles, which are then available in any Photoshop document.
3D type enhancements* — Enhance 3D type with new GL preview and image-based lights (IBL) improvements.

I am not a Creative Cloud subscriber, why do I not the get the 13.1 update? Doesn't my full purchase also qualify me for free updates?
When you buy Photoshop CS6 outright, you are essentially buying a static product. You still qualify for minor, bug fixing releases like 13.0.1 and 13.0.2, but your purchase will not include any new features, as has always been the case in the past.
When you subscribe to Creative Cloud, you are not buying CS6, you are subscribing to whatever the latest version of Photoshop is. This means you are immediately entitled to any new features and upgrades as they become available. And this is only one of the many great reasons to be a Creative Cloud subscriber. Why do my images appear smaller on my Retina enabled Mac after installing the 13.1/13.0.2 update?
Retina displays use a higher pixel density than a normal monitor. The individual display pixels are approximately one half the size of previous devices. While working in Photoshop before installing the 13.1/13.0.2 update, as with any other non-Retina optimized application, the number of pixels used is doubled to give a normal, non-miniaturized appearance. This can cause applications to be slightly blurred or pixilated. Thus, when viewing images in Photoshop, the zoom level is effectively double whatever is displayed. At 100% zoom, the image is displayed so that every one image pixel is shown with four display pixels, the same as viewing the image at 200%. With the 13.1/13.0.2 update, Photoshop now displays natively on Retina screens, meaning that image pixels now appear at the much smaller Retina size, thus reducing the amount of screen space they take up when viewed at 100%.

    Known Issues
The following are known issues with the 13.1 and 13.0.2 updates but have been fixed in the 13.1.1 and 13.0.3 updates:
Program error opening files in 13.1 and 13.0.2
Photoshop 13.1/13.0.2 crashes opening EPS files
Photoshop crashes after updating to 13.1 or 13.0.2 on Retina display

    Why have icons disappeared?
Due to changes in the number of pixels involved in the UI, some icons can disappear. If the Photoshop Dock icon is now blank, rebooting the computer will refresh the system and load the new HiDPI icon. Some extensions do not have a Retina ready icon and thus will be blank when you have the panel minimized. In most cases like these, we may have to wait until the manufacturer also releases a HiDPI version of the Extension. Additionally, sub-menu headers may become blank when you view the contents of the sub-menu. For example, if you select Filter > Sharpen, while viewing the list of Sharpen, Sharpen Edges, Sharpen More, etc "Sharpen" itself will be blank.
    Additional known issues:
Image on second monitor goes black
No Print Size button in Zoom tool options in Photoshop CS6

You might want to wait.  There are some bugs in it and Adobe is working on it.  See threads posted in last few hours.
Well that might explain things more than I've garnered from the Forums.  I've got a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion and a Mac Pro with Lion, both with CS6 Design and Web Premium on them.  The Mac Pro updates Photoshop to 13.0.3, the MacBook Pro is "stuck" at 13.0.1.  It won't update via the "Help/Updates" or by downloading and trying to install manually.  AAM gives an error when trying manually; says to contact support.  Other CS6 apps, i.e. Illustrator, do not update on the MBPro either.  I've uninstalled/reinstalled, deactivated/reactivated, etc., to no avail.  If it means anything, I just deactivated the Illustrator app, quit it, restarted, and the splash screen (which shows the loading progress) showed "Try" on it - haven't noticed that before, and I have not installed any trial downloads.  I'm at a loss as to why one installation of CS6 Design and Web Premium (physical/downoad) will update properly on one computer and not the other.
Am waiting to see if Adobe has an answer.  The apps work, just don't update...

  • 450 MHz G4 Approaching the end of its Line... or Not?

450 MHz is not fast by any stretch I know, but for 5 years this machine has served me well and been 100% reliable. My G4 Cube is stock except for a 120GB HD, maxxed out RAM and Panther 10.3.9. Some common Photoshop chores on my very large files (200 to 700MB) do require a wait but it has never been unbearable. That is to say, while waiting, I could jump to another app or 2 and do something while photoshop did it's job. The extra RAM has certainly kept my machine useful and snappy in this regard. But yesterday is seems I finally hit the wall.
I was trying to run a DVD training video (via external firewire drive) and installed training app while following along in the application I want to learn. The video displays fine on its own but once I try to run all 3 items (the video, training app and the app. I'm learning) everything just slows down terribly. For instance toggling between an app dialog box and the video takes measureable time... i'm talking 10-15 seconds. Opening a pallet, causes it to disappear for a moment. Sometimes, the video instructs you to open a 4th app. Doing so takes over a minute just to get the app up not to mention loading the dialog box (another 20 seconds) and grabbing the file you need file... another 20+ seconds.
The training app suggests a 1.0 GHz processor but minumum required is 450MHz and if I recall correctly, when I installed I saw 16MB VRAM required... right where I'm at with a stock Cube.
Sounds like a no brainer... the computer is too slow. BUT WAIT... this is where I could really use some advice.
In the interest of keeping my system clean from unnecessary programs I opted to load both the Application and Training App onto one of my EXTERNAL FIREWIRE HDs which contains OS 10.3.9. I reasoned that the training app would not need to be a permanent installation so why clutter my main system. Up 'til now whenever I've booted from this external disc (which is pretty often), I really sense no loss in speed or performance of the system even when working in apps like photoshop. The firewire bus seems as fast as the installed ATA HD in real world uses. So, in the situation I just described both my firewire ports are busy.. one with an external system HD and the 2nd with the optical drive.
Could the bottlenecking be the result of running off 2 firewires rather than the internal drives?
Or could it be the marginal amount VRAM?
Or is the stock processor just too slow to handle my need?
Activity monitor shows CPU user usage in the upper 80s to mid 90s with the 3 programs running and just one user logged in.
This computer has a 100MHz system bus and I think 66MBps data bus.
BTW, I do perform regular maintenance on both my imac and cube. Each run flawlessly and most certainly would meet their bechmarks. I repair permissions before and after any installation, rebuild the directories every month, empty caches etc.

    I think
you would enjoy a faster processor but the Cube is so
limited in so many ways that I would consider a used
G-4 tower and upgrade it. The towers provide so much
more opportunities. I have added a usb 2.0 card and a
sata card to mine as well as the Sonnet and 2 gigs of
    ram. Tom
You're absolutely right... the Cube is limited. Not just in expandability but cooling and everytime I've looked at processor upgrades, I shy away because
I don't want to hack the case and of course a meltdown is not on my wishlist either. Plenty have upgraded cubes with DP, big video cards etc. For me, I've always considered the risk and the fact that I can never get USB 2.0... researched that one a year ago and no dice. If only I could talk my dad into parting with his G4 quicksilver. He uses his PCs for work duties and the mac basically sits there to go online because he doesn't want to invest in software for it.

  • Redraw problems in iTunes 7

Just ugraded to iTunes 7.0.0, and I'm having window redraw problems. Whenever I play a video or go to one of the new fancy album art views (the latter of which usually won't display at all), it ends up causing a semi-random rectangular portion of the iTunes window to not redraw. So if I go back to the song list, it'll still be displaying the previous screen's information, though it still functions correctly as far as playing songs is concerned. If I drag the window down so that area is off-screen, then back again (or minimize and restore), it redraws the correct current screen. But then as soon as I scroll or anything, the visual bit gets stuck in that section again. (At least the program itself isn't freezing.)
I do have a fairly old video card. I have a four-year-old dual-867 G4 (MDD). I thought I had the cheapest video card available at the time, which I thought was an ATI, but my System Profiler claims I have an nVIDIA 32MB GeForce4 MX (AGP). It's driving two 1600x1200 displays.
I really like all the new features of iTunes 7, and the higher-quality video from the store. And I'm not really mad since I can still make everything work. But I'd have to agree with others here that Apple didn't do thorough enough testing this time around.
Ironically, everything I've tried so far worked fine on my Windows box at work... but it is brand new (3GHz dual core, just got them last week)... and only driving a single 1280x1024 display.
Anybody else find any fixes? I hope Apple has an update soon that fixes this.

It only partially fixed the problem for me. Prior to doing it, I was okay if I started up in old-style list mode and stayed there. If I switch to another mode, updates would just immediately die and I couldn't really do anything.
After the fix, I can now switch between the modes and things continue to work. I can also use the album view just fine. However, the cover view is still broken. It at least draws the covers now (instead of just a white box or an un-updated portion of the library list, which is what I got before), but the scroll controls in the covers area are just white boxes.
I'm on a G4/450 (Sawtooth) upgraded to a G4/1.4. I have two monitors running at 1600x1200, one on a 16 MB ATI Rage 128 Pro and the other on a 16 MB ATI Rage 128. My iTunes window is roughly 1600x960 pixels in size.
I saw that someone posted the minimum VRAM requirement for iTunes 7 as 16 MB. Where did they find this? All I saw on the download page when I checked yesterday was that it required some G3 variant - nothing about VRAM. And, I don't think many (an?) G3-era machines had 16 MB VRAM, so making that requirement explicit would seem important.

  • Which Photoshop will run on a late 2007 MacBook?

I've been digging, and *think* that the correct answer is Photoshop CS4.
Here are the specs on my MacBook:
Processor  2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics  Intel GMA X3100 144 MB VRAM
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
As far as I've been able to determine, I cannot run Photoshop CS5 or 6 because of the VRAM required; also cannot run PS CS6 because it requires OSX 10.8, which the late '07 MacBooks cannot run.
Any additional information would be appreciated!

Maverick on Late 2008 MBP seems a hot topic these days
Well, I also have a late 2008 MBP 2.53GHz - 4 GB RAM, and I gotta change the HDD, since it became very slow. To be honest, I am very happy with 10.6.8: I think it is quite stable and all the apps I use are available for such an OS. However, I was thinking if it may be worth to upgrade it to Lion, Mountain Lion or Maverick. Pros and cons? Would you suggest me to do that? Thanks!

It's difficult to say without knowing what apps you're using. Many list the minimum GPU and VRAM requirement.
I've heard you supposed to have two graphics cards is that true? Is the card easy enough to change, ugrade and add second card? Thanks for any help.
Not possible. This machine has one GPU, it's soldered onto the logic board, it is not upgradeable, nor is there a slot for another one to be added (this is a common setup for laptops). Some of the Unibodies have dual GPUs, one with its own dedicated VRAM, one integrated into the LB and sharing system RAM (the 9400/9600 come to mind).
2007 upgraded macbook pro. Mac osx 10.6 intel core dual 2.5 ghz. the graphics card is Nvidia geoforce 8600m GT.
No such machine. The 15" was produced only in 2008, while 2.5GHz versions of the 17" were produced in 08 and into 09.
If you have the 15" 2.5GHz Original MBP, then you have 512MB VRAM, so maybe you can check the apps you want to use to see what will/will not work.
Also, this machine has a native/max built-in display resolution of 1440x900, but will drive a full HD external display (1920x1080) and higher (the earlier 17" 2.5GHz has native/max built-in resolution of 1680x1050, while the later 17" 2.5 is 1920x1200).

    OK.
It is indeed upgradeable. Ensure that you check all prospective video card system requirements to see if they require that you upgrade the PSU. Check the specs for your PC to see how many Watts (RMS) the PSU delivers. I just checked. It has only 300 Watts. It would be better  to upgrade to one with a bit more grunt (@450 Watts or better) if your plan is to upgrade to a video card that has some real power.
Most lower end PC's do not have PSUs  that come equipped with PCIe six and eight pin power connectors. They are required for the mainstream and higher end graphics cards.
The video card you asked about:
    Requirements
Minimum of a 350 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 18 Amps.)
Total Power Draw : 49 Watts
Some versions of the video card, depending on the installed vRAM require more power.

    Hi 755scrabblematt,
Can you try this, launch the Adobe Application Manager from either the Start Menu or the Applications folder and install all updates. Then launch Photoshop CS6 and click the "License This Software" button and sign in with your Adobe Id. See if that resolves the issue.

  • Which Graphics card for OpenGL 3D Support? (Mac)

I have an earlier 2008 MacPro with a Radeon HD 2600 XT Card. Adobe says it's supported but all 3D options are grayed out. The menu is grayed out and open GL is grayed.
Do I need a new card? If so, what cards are Mac users using for good 3D?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
What version of Ps Extended do you have or wish to use? For Ps CS6 Extended the minimum GPU VRAM requirement is 512MB, which explains greyed out menu items if you're running CS6.
Recommended Ps CS6 Extended GPU VRAM is 1GB or greater. You'll also benefit buying as much RAM as you can afford.
Both of those cards should work with the CS6 3D features. However, you may want to look at newer cards from nVidia and ATI to see if they also work with the '08 MacPro running 10.8.2.
