VSS on DFS Server

We have two Physical Windows 2012 R2 Storage Edition configured as DFS.
Server B is read only and nobody can access it, all the clients conntect to server A.
On both server we have activated VSS
We have 6 TB of shared data on the server.
One share is very large 3TB and its staging area is 1 TB large.
In DFS event log I see 4202 error for this share.
VSS are scheduled at 10 am and 15 pm and stored on a different disk partition 1,5 TB large.
When VSS start and for an hour long server A:
- stop responding to user interfaces
- windows 2003, 2003 R2, xp client can't connect anymore to the shares
- windows 2008, vista or higher access to share is very slow
Any ideas?

Hi,
Sorry for the delay.
If you can access the shared folder using IP address, you could enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on server to see if the issue still exists.

  • DFS server / SIte and Services

    Hi Guys,
A knowledge question about DFS server Windows 2008 R2.
I have four data center on each Europe location, and I will install DFS server also on the location to attach the data on the nearly site location. My domain level is Windows 2008.
    Example:
    Site A: 192.168.1.x
    Site B: 192.178.1.x
    Site C: 192.188.1.x
    Site D: 192.198.1.x
I have already setup a DFS server on Site A and its working, with example IP number: 192.168.1.100, now I will setup a new DFS server for Site B, C and D. with using Full mesh replication.
When I setup a new server on site B example with IP number: 192.178.1.100 and ready to use. But if the user logon from Site B, the user have to use DFS server from site B and not from Site A site. (to get his data from server site A) If the DFS server from
site B is down the user will get his Data from Site A. She have always use Site B, how can I build this way on each location.
I heard that I have to crate a Site for this option and other information what I get is use costs options. ( and do I need a domain controller on each site)
Can somebody advice how to build and the best practice DFS server on multiple locations with one or more DFS server on location.
    Kind regards,
    Hakan
    Good luck everyone.

    Hi Hakan,
Actually it is not a DFS related question - It is AD related.
As you said you need to create sites for your different subnets and setup site link cost. Detailed steps please refer to:
    Create a site
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc728152(v=ws.10).aspx
    Configure site link cost
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc784142(v=ws.10).aspx
By Default DFS will provide an in-site target to clients. If no in-site target is available, it will provide an out-site target according to site link cost.

  • DFS server Copy create on another location

    Hi,
we have a DFS server on one location and we need to copy all the file and folders from the DFS server to another server on other location. Same DFS root need to be configured on the new server on other locationSite
Site A  - DFS1 server Create a same copy of server site B - DFS1 server enable replication. Both should be onlive on production
    Couple of query
Can I copy the files manuall and Configure the DFS or just enable the DFS replication after installing new server on other location/
    thanks.

    Hi,
I suggest you enable the DFS replication after installing new server on other location. When you configure DFS replication between the two server, all the file and folders on the old server will be replicated automatically. Please note you need to set the old
server as primary server when configure DFS replication.
For more detailed information, please refer to the article below:
    Create a Replication Group
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725893.aspx
You could also copy the files manually then configure the DFS on the new server, but it is not as simple as DFS replication.

  • DFS server removal

    Hello,
I have a domain controller that I would like to decomission and remove.  It is also one of three namespace servers.  How can I remove it as a namespace server?  It actually isn't sharing any files in the namspace on the server.
    Thanks,

Do it in the DFS console.  On the left click on the namespace that this DC is a namespace for.  On the right click on the Namespace Servers tab.  Highlight the DC and click on Delete to the right of that.

  • VSS problems on Server 2012

We have a number of Server 2012 servers and two Server 2012 R2 servers.  I use Windows Server Backup to back them up nightly to a remote share.  This worked fine on them for several weeks.  About two weeks ago, one of the Server 2012 servers
began to have the following problem:
    - Backup failed saying the System Writer could not be found
    - Listing writers showed it was not there
    - A lot of stuff on the web talked about permissions issues but this did not seem to be the case.
    - Just restarting the Cryptographic Services service fixes the problem for that day - I can backup multiple times in the same day.  But overnight the problem recurs until I restart the Cryptographic Services service
A few days later one of my Server 2012 R2 servers had the problem.  Restarting cryptsvc fixed it, and the problem did not recur for a few days.  Then it did.
    So right now:
    - One Server 2012 server has to have the cryptsvc restarted daily
    - One Server 2012 R2 server has to have it restarted occasionally - maybe once a week.
There has been no change - no new software, etc - in either server.  The backups worked fine for weeks and then this problem happened.
The Server 2012 server is an admin server and has a lot of software installed; the other has the Pulse software installed and nothing else.
I have tried a number of recommended solutions off the web, all to no avail.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello John,
System State backup using Windows Server Backup fails with error: System writer is not found in the backup
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-US;2009272
The issue is caused by a permissions issues with the COM+ Event System Service.
Check for the existence of a GPO that is setting this permission or if this was not intended then you can simply reset the permissions for the Service Logon User. In this case that is the Local Service.
    Checking for the GPO:
    Start Group Policy Manager
Expand Policies then Windows Settings and then Security Settings
Under Security Settings locate System Services and click on it
Locate "COM+ Event System" in the list of services and confirm that both the "Startup" and "Permissions" columns are set to "Not Defined".
If these are settings are configured you will need to consult with the customer as to what purpose this serves in the environment before making any changes
NOTE: Making changes to a group policy can effect all computers in which the policy applies to. Take extra care to confirm that the changes you are making will not affect the environment negatively.

You can do both. Robocopy may be a bit faster however. Here's a simple step-by-step guide on how to migrate DFS namespace to another box. See:
    Migrate DFS to another server
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2008/01/15/migrating-your-dfs-namespaces-in-three-sorta-easy-steps.aspx
    Robocopy is pretty much straightforward...

I am running windows 2008 R2 DCs but DFS is still on windows 2000 Server mode.
Can I add a windows 2008 Server as a DFS server?

    Hi,
Yes you can add a Windows 2008 Server as a DFS server.

  • DFS-R folder resources Failed in Failover Cluster on Server 2008 R2

Maybe a week ago, 7 of our DFS-R Folder failover cluster resources lost their configuration data. In the resource list, they just show up as "()".
I've seen suggestions online that disabling the replicated folder will remove it from the Failover Cluster, and then re-enabling it will automatically add it back to the cluster. So, I've disabled it via the Connections tab, and that does nothing. The other
option is to disable it under the Memberships tab...but that has consequences, and I would rather not do that if it isn't necessary.
I'm also now seeing event ID 5012's popping up in the DFS Replication logs every hour or so.
The DFS Replication service failed to communicate with partner etc etc. The partner did not recognize the connection or the
    replication group configuration.
Error: 9026 (The connection is invalid)
Now, "dfsrdiag pollad /verbose" or "dfsrdiag pollad /mem:<dc name>" both come back as successful. And a DFS Diagnostic Report brings back nothing apparently relevant to this issue, other than one error concerning the same event
    ID 5012's.
Also, I've verified that it's not a DNS issue, pinging the home office DFS server from the site server resolves correctly, and vice versa. And the windows firewall is disabled on both servers. It's POSSIBLE that there is a network issue. Replication works
fine between the site server and the 2nd cluster server service, just not between the site server and the 1st cluster server service. However, via netstat I see active connections between the site server and the cluster server, as well as the active cluster
host (although, just a single connection to the clustered DFS server, but ~6 to the cluster host itself).
So, I'm completely at a loss here. Any recommendations?

    Hi,
This error usually occurs when one partner attempts to establish an RPC connection with another member, but is unable to.

  • DFS Folder Target to Samba Share not working

    Hello folks,
I'm on Server 2012 R2. I'm using a DFS Namespace that is configured as standalone server (i.e. not a domain-based namespace). The Namespace is the IP address of the server. I have also tried this with the hostname of the server and I get the same results.
    Here's my problem:
I've created a folder target within DFS that points to a samba share on a linux-based NAS. The samba share is a 'cloud storage' share hosted by my server host, so I'm not entirely sure what specific technology it is. It does not have a public ACL - it requires
authentication and I cannot change that. I can connect to the Namespace fine from other servers. However, when I try to open the folder target, it tells me "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password". Then, if I right-click the folder, select
Properties then the DFS tab, I see that the path is Active. If I click Check Status, I get Okay, and when I exit, the folder is now navigable and I have no problems browsing the folders. Sometimes when I close Explorer, the share will still be accessible when
I reopen Explorer and browse to it, but most of the time when I close and reopen, the same error is displayed and I have to Check Status again to regain access. If I logout of the session, log back in and try again, it always gives me the error until I Check
    Status again.
The idea is to access this share from multiple instances of IIS, so obviously requiring user intervention is not going to be suitable. I have added a local user to the DFS server that matches the valid credentials on the samba share, and I've also added
them to all the servers trying to use this share. I've confirmed that all servers can browse directly to the share. I do notice that when I browse directly to the samba share after having not used it for some time (30 minutes or one hour), it takes longer
than expected to open - maybe 10 seconds. Could this lag be causing the issue? There are no errors or warnings in the logs on the DFS server. Any ideas what this could be? Have I missed something? Massive thanks for any guidance!

  • DFS Replication failed to contact Domain Controller.....

I have seen this error since the inception of this stand alone AD PDC instance of Windows server 2012 R2 Essentials. I understand that Essentials does not support other Domain Controllers ; Member servers ; or trust between Domains of any kind. I also
understand that DSF Replication is a service that replicates files between other servers and other domain servers that Essentials dose not want to talk to.
So my question is why am I seeing this DFSR error 1202  in my event log, if Essentials does not support communication to other servers and domain servers? Maybe a better question is why does Essentials even try to implement this
service? Do I even need to try to resolve this issue or should I just disable it and move on?

Did you mean that you did not configure a DFS server in the new DC but you get the DFSR error 1202 in your event log? Then the issue is not related to the existing SBS domain.

  • Advise on using Branch office server as backup

    Hello and thanks for assistance,
The site in question has four physical servers and two virtual servers. They have the following major functions. Server A is a DC/DNS server as well as hosting DFS files. Server B holds exchange server 2012A and the replica partner for DFS, Server C
has two virtual servers installed. First one is exchange 2012B and second one is the antivirus server. Server D is a DC and a witness server. It also holds WSUS. Backup is taking as long as 12 hours. I had an idea of moving Server C and D offsite and configuring
them as branch office servers using VPN. Then all data including mail will be offsite and eliminate the need for backups. All servers of course have RAID1 so my concern really is not hardware related but disaster recovery in the event of fire, flood, ect.
I know this idea may be full of holes but that is why I am posting this for your opinions. There are about 50 workstations in the network. The client is very dependent on the network.
    Thanks
    Ronald C. Pope

    Hi Ronald,
Of course you can create offsite Exchange server and DC. The connection performance may be an issue as you must use site-to-site VPN incase you need a failover.
Both topics are discussed a lot in Exchange and DC forum:

    ---------------------------------------more troubleshooting-----------------------------
I've done a lot of research on the Internet and most of it is pointing to the same stuff I've tried.  Does anyone have any other suggestions?  Maybe I need to look somewhere
else on the server side or firewall side?
I tried replicating from a 2012 R2 server to another 2012 server and am getting the same events in the event log so maybe it's not a server issue.
    Some other things I'm wondering:
-Could it be the speed of the NICs?  Server A is a 2012 Server that has Hyper-V installed.  NIC teaming was initially setup and since Hyper-V is installed the NIC is a "vEthernet
(Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver Virtual Switch) running at a speed of 10.0Gbps whereas Server B is running a single NIC at 1.0Gbps
-Could occasional ping timeout's cause the issue?  From time to time I get a timeout but it's not as often as the events I'm seeing.  I'm getting 53ms pings.  The folder
is only 3 GB so it shouldn't take that long to replicate but it's been days.  The schedule I have set for replication is mostly all day except for our backup times which start at 11pm-5am.  Throughout the rest of the time I have it set anywhere from
    4Mbps to 64 Kbps.  Server A is on a 5mb circuit and Server B is on a 10mb circuit.

I'm seeing the same errors, all servers are running 2008 R2 x64. Across multiple sites, VPN is steady and reliably.
    185 events from 12:28:21 to 12:49:25
Events are for all five servers (one per office, five total offices, no two in the same city, across three states).
Events are not limited to one replication group. I have quite a few replication groups, so I don't know for sure but I'm running under the reasonable assumption that none are spared.
Reminder from original post (and also, yes, same for me), the error is: Error: 1726 (The remote procedure call failed.)
Some way to figure out what code triggers an Event ID 5014, and what code therein specifies an Error 1726, would extremely helpful. Trying random command line/registry changes on live servers is exceptionally unappealing.
Side note, 1726 is referenced here:
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/976442?wa=wsignin1.0
But it says, "This RPC connection problem may be caused by an unstable WAN connection." I don't believe this is the case for my system.
    It also says...
For most RPC connection problems, the DFS Replication service will try to obtain the files again without logging a warning or an error in the DFS Replication log. You can capture the network trace to determine whether the cause of the problem is at the network
layer. To examine the TCP ports that the DFS Replication service is using on replication partners, run the following command in a
    Command Prompt window:
    NETSTAT –ANOBP TCP
This returns all open TCP connections. The connections in question are "DFSRs.exe", which the command won't let you filter for.
Instead, I used the NETSTAT command as advertised, dumping output to info.txt:
    NETSTAT -ANOBP TCP >> X:\info.txt
Then I opened Excel and manually opened the .TXT for the open wizard. I chose fixed-width fields based on the first row for each result, and then added a column:
    =IF(A3="Can not", "Can not obtain ownership information", IF(LEFT(A3,1) = "[", A3&B3&C3, ""))
Dragging this down through the entire file let me see that row (Row F) as the file name. Some anomalies were present but none impacted DFSrs.exe results.
Finally, you can sort/filter (I sorted because I like being able to see everything, should I choose to) to get just the results you need, with the partial rows removed from the result set, or bumped to the end.
My server had 125 connections open.
That is a staggering number of connections to review, and I feel like I'm looking for a needle in a haystack.
I'll see if I can find anything useful out, but a better solution would be most wonderful.

  • Problems with VSS and RoboHelp on second machine

    Hi all,
We chose to use Visual Source Safe as our source control tool
to use with RoboHelp. To build the VSS database containing the help
project on the server, we successfully used the version of our help
project on my machine. I have had no problems using it for the last
several weeks. Everything works great. Files are retrieved, checked
out, and checked back in with no issues.
The problem is we have been unable to successfully set anyone
else on the team up with the VSS-RoboHelp source control. Since
we're not building the database from scratch, the way we did with
mine, we're trying to "get" the version from VSS on the server and
place it on her machine. I'm guessing this is the way to do it, but
we don't know how. When we try to get the version in source
control, only the top level of .htm topics are retrieved, not
anything that is nested in child folders. Then, when we attempt to
open the help project on her machine, we get all sorts of errors
ranging from "corrupt .cpd" files to "invalid characters" to "the
local version is different from the version in source control"
(DUH!). We tell it to get files from RoboHelp when we try to open
the help project on her C drive, but it doesn't download them
    correctly, and invariably RoboHelp crashes.
Has anyone successfully used VSS with RoboHelp, and if so,
how do you get a new computer set up with an existing RoboHelp
project that is already in VSS? I need exact steps, if possible,
since it's not intuitive (or since we're just clueless).
I really appreciate any help anyone can offer!
    Thanks!
    Lisa

    Hi Kathy,
Thank you for your response. I'm not sure we're on the same
page, but it just may be because I'm so new to this. The problem
isn't with checking in or checking out files -- It sounds like you
might be at step 5 and we're still at step 1. The problem is with
getting the entire help project down from source control to her
machine the very first time. For example... Imagine a new RoboHelp
author who has just started with the company and has just gotten
RoboHelp and VSS installed on her machine. We now need to get the
project down from VSS to her machine. We can't check out or get
anything yet because the project hasn't even come down to her
machine yet. RoboHelp on her machine doesn't even know about this
help project out there. We open RoboHelp, and there's nothing on
her C drive to browse to because the project isn't even there yet.
I believe our infrastructure guy (who has been trying to get her
set up with this, but is as much in the dark as I am) was trying to
somehow "get" the files from VSS to her C drive from within VSS,
but obviously that didn't work because it only grabbed the
top-level files. I don't know if any of this makes sense. I thought
there'd be a way, in RoboHelp, to tell it that we have something
out in source control, and "please go get it." It doesn't seem to
    work that way.
If you and I *are* on the same page and I just don't
understand, I apologize, in which case do you mean she's supposed
to check out files or get files from within VSS? Apparently that's
what the infrastructure guy did, and it didn't work. She needs to
be able to work on these help files just like I do, so she needs to
be able to get, check out, and check in. Or do you mean we need to
check out or get files from within RoboHelp?
    Color me confused... :P
    Thanks,
    Lisa

  • Weird DFS issue Windows 8.1 clients

One of my users noticed something peculiar when working on text or document from a DFS share.
The user will save changes and leave the doc open. Preliminary tests show that around 10min+ is when user receives an error, "THE SYSTEM CANNOT FIND THE PATH SPECIFIED".  The user hits the "OK"
button and is presented with a "SAVE AS" dialog in the same working directory. User hits "SAVE", dialog warns of an "overwrite" and hits "OK" again and text or doc gets saved.
I was able to reproduce the problem myself. I opened an online stopwatch and set a count down of 12 minutes. Every 3 minutes I added some text and hit save. All was well until the last 3:45. I added some more text, hit save and BOOM - error occurred, "The
System cannot find the path specified".
The two servers that hold the DFS share are Windows 2012 R2 boxes. One sits in the LA site and the other in Chicago. According to the output from "get-dfsrbacklog", there is no backlog between the DFS servers - all appears sync'd. Also, logs
appear clean except a few of errors in the event log and DFS replication health report regarding sharing violations.
Anyone seen something like this? Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot?

    Hi,
Please run DFSUTIL /PKTINFO on the client to check if the client referred to Off-Site DFS namespace targets and also check if the DFS root information was missing in registry:
    "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\DFS\Roots\Domain"
If so, we could export the same registry from a working DFS server and imported the same on the server and restarted the DFS service to check the results.

  • DFS on 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 simultaneously

First of let me preface this by saying DFS newbie here so any help is appreciated.
Background:  Currently in our environment we have one 2008 R2 box running the DFS Role Services.  It has a handful (< 10) namespaces configured.  We also have several 2003 servers with multiple fileshares.  None of these 2003 shares
are configured for dfs or replication to my knowledge.  We are trying move all the data and shares off of the 2003 servers so they can be retired.
Question and options:  Too avoid having to do the 2003 -> 2008 -> 2012 dance I'd like to go ahead and move as much as possible to directly to 2012R2.  So the question I guess is can I have different namespaces for
\\mydomain.com configured on both the 2008 R2 and a 2012 R2 at the same time?  I don't necessarily want to move anything off of the 2008 server at the moment; just leave it alone.  What I'd like to do is set up
2 new 2012R2 servers with the DFS role installed and move all the data from the 2003 servers to new replicated shares on the 2012 servers.  These will be new different namespaces from the ones on the 2008 server but still be
\\mydomain.com  Can namespaces for the same domain and the dfs roles co-exist on both the 2008 and the 2012 servers at the same time independently?
Any information as to if this will work or better ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
We can create different namespaces for \\mydomain.com configured on both the 2008 R2 and a 2012 R2 at the same time. If you click “Add Namespaces to Display…” on a DFS server, you could view all namespaces for \\mydomain.com configured on the current DFS server.
    Best Regards,
    Mandy
