VSS - Virtual Switch Domain Uniqueness Doubt

Hi everyone,
In the Cisco documentation, says that
You must configure the same virtual switch domain number on both switches of the VSS. The virtual switch domain is a number between 1 and 255, and must be unique for each VSS in your network.
My doubt is how can I understand the word network ?
I cannot use the same Virtual Switch Domain in a L2 Network, in a L3 Network, in a same customer Network ?
For example, if a customer has a lot of sites connected by a MPLS Wan, can I reuse the Virtual Switch Domain in each site ?
Thanks for Advanced
Andre Gustavo

You can re-use the virtual domain ID as long as the the two VSS chassis are not directly connecting to each other. Take a look at this link:
VVirtual Domain
Defining the domain identifier (ID) is the first step in creating a VSS from two physical chassis. A unique domain ID identifies two switches that are intended to be part of the same VSS pair that defines the VSS domain. Assignment of a domain ID allows multiple virtual switch pairs to be connected in a hierarchical manner. Only one VSS pair can participate in a particular domain. The domain ID can have a value ranging from 1 to 255 and must be unique when multiple VSS pairs are connected together. See Figure 2-2.

Virtual Switching technology is  the process of combining two standalone distribution switches found in  the local distribution layer into a single management point.
The Virtual  Switching System functions and appears as a single switch to the wiring  closet and the core layer. You can also create Virtual Switching Systems  with a pair of standalone switches available in the core layer.

  • Proper sizing of VSS virtual switch link

I am considering using VSS in my collapsed core/distribution on a pair of 6509/Sup2T switches with 6904-40G-2T modules. My closets are 4506/Sup7E, and I have one high-density, mission critical IDF with two fully populated 4510R+E/Sup7E switches. The interlinks will be either 2x or 4x10GE depending on customer decisions to be made. I am trying to find information that would suggest best practice for sizing the VSL. From what I can find, it would appear that not a significant amount of traffic goes across this link if everything in the environment is equally connected to both members of the VSS pairs. So, 2x10GE would be just as good as 4x, or even 2x40GE. However, I haven't found anything definitive yet. Is there a rule of thumb for sizing this link?
    Thanks for any guidance.

The VSL can be the Achilles Heel of a VSS setup.
As you note, if everything is configured optimally, very little traffic should cross this link.
However, suppose a line card fails.  As the sup2t supports 80Gbps slot, in theory, that 80Gbps might need to transit the VSL.  (NB: Hopefully, VSL also wasn't on the failed card.)
So, to size your VSL, consider bandwidth needs if a line card fails.
Also keep in mind, VSL (at least on 6500s) doesn't allow custom QoS, so you also lose some control on traffic management if VSL congests.

  • Configuring and Troubleshooting Virtual Switching System (VSS)

    With Anand Ganesan
Welcome to the Cisco Support Community Ask the Expert conversation. This is an opportunity to learn and ask questions about how to monitor, configure, and troubleshoot the Virtual Switching System (VSS) in Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches with expert Anand Ganesan.
VSS is network system virtualization technology that pools multiple Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches into one virtual switch, increasing operational efficiency, boosting nonstop communications, and scaling system bandwidth capacity to 1.4 Tbps. At the initial phase, a VSS will allow two physical Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches to operate as a single logical virtual switch called a virtual switching system 1440 (VSS1440).
    For more information, visit:  www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps9336/prod_qas0900aecd806ed74b.html
The VSS simplifies network configuration and operation by reducing the number of Layer 3 routing neighbors and by providing a loop-free Layer 2 topology.

Should I suppress the eigrp HELLOs on these interfaces to get rid of the log message?

  • How to route traffic across subnets when one NIC is a hyper-V virtual switch?

Having a bit of a problem with a hyper-V environment which does not seem to route network traffic on two different subnets between each other.
If it were a purely physical server with two NICs and a gateway set traffic would automatically be forwarded between the two different subnets.
However when one of those NICs is a hyper-V virtual switch this simple routing no-longer seems to work and no traffic gets forwarded between subnets?
    Situation is:
    Hyper-V server with two NICs
    NIC 1 = 192.168.0/24 - main Internal company network.
NIC 2 (hyper-V virtual switch.) = 192.168.1/24 - connects to ADSL internet router
    Virtualized Domain Controller.
One or two virtualiszed NICs as necessary
How then does traffic get routed between these two subnets?  If RRAS has to be configured to do this where is the best place to do it, on the hyper-V host or on the virtualized domain controller?
    Thanks,

    Hi ,
You can create an internal virtual switch and configure an IP for it (I assume it is 192.168.1.2/24) .
After you enable RRAS in hyper-v host  there will be two gateways for different subnets  .
    " NIC 2 (hyper-V virtual switch.) = 192.168.1/24 - connects to ADSL internet router "
The problem is here ,if  these VMs need to access internet .
So , these VMs can not configure their gateway same as the IP of internal virtual switch , you may set VM's gateway as the ADSL internet router's IP meanwhile add a static route entry for every VM .
Please refer to the Syntax :
    route add -p 192.168.0.0 mask 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.2
    Hope this helps

  • SCVMM Virtual Switch Provisioning ignores "Inherit settings from the physical management adapter" setting

When provisioning a new Hyper-V hosting into SCVMM I have a situation occur that causes loss of management to the server, which really should not be happening. When I add a new host, I set the 'Virtual Switch' adding a new 'Logical Switch' as well as a 'Virtual
Network Adapter' for the management OS traffic.
The first NIC in the team is active and configured with correct static IP information, which is allowing VMM access to the server to perform these steps.  The 'Virtual Network Adapter' has a checkbox in the 'This virtual network adapter inherits settings
from the physical management adapter.' option box.
From my understanding what should happen is when the virtual adapter is created on the host the IP information should move to the virtual adapter from the physical adapter that is now part of the NIC Team. What is actually happening is the NIC Team seems
to create OK, but it picks up a DHCP IP address instead of assuming the first physical NIC's IP information. I tried this with only one NIC as well as both NICs in the team to see what happens. Either case the same problem presents.
To get around this, what I did was sit on the console after I started the provisioning process. As soon as I saw Teamed NIC create I applied the static IP address via PowerShell manually to that Teamed NIC virtual adapter and then VMM just continued along
normally. It then moving the IP from the NIC Team adapter to the Hyper-V virtual adapter properly. I did get a warning back from the creation (below) which hints me to the problem.
The Error code details as 2147942465 which is a "Network Access Denied" code followed by "Error while applying physical adapter network settings to teamed adapter". So, this is telling me there was a permission issue of some sort during
the step of adding the original physical NIC IP settings to the virtual NIC.
The VMM Run As user 'HVAdmin' is a Local Administrator on the Hyper-V host, this has been verified. It has also been temporarily granted Administrator access on the domain to see if it helps. No go.
Searching around the net has now revealed this problem so far, has anyone else seen this? It makes provisioning a bit of a chore because I have to be at the Hyper-V console and on VMM at the exact same time to add a new host.

It's a workaround but this works best.
When initially configuring the host use a dedicated Nic.
Configure the new team with a management Vnic and assign the Vnic an IP.
Now disable the dedicated nic and you can start working the the team and the Vnic.

  • Question about VLAN handling for virtual switches and vnets

    Regards,
We are encountering some problems when using VLAN tagged 10g ethernet. We assign the VLANS to the vsw like this:
    ldm add-vsw net-dev=net2 mtu=9000 vid=vid1,vid2,.... mode=sc primary-vsw0 primary
the mode=sc is due to us planning for possible Solaris Cluster installation for some guests. The guest get its vnets like this:
    ldm add-vnet mode=hybrid vid=vid1 vnet0 primary-vsw0 guest
we use mode=hybrid since this is a NIU 10 gig eth interface in a T4-4. My questions are:
    1. Do you see any problems with this config ?
    2. Do you know of any problems with using VLAN tagging in virtual switches/virtual nets for LDOMs ?
    3. When adding, subtracting VLANS to the vsw does it need to recreated or does a ldm set-vsw vid=vid1,... work dynamically (this goes of course for other vsw properties as well) ?
This is VM Server for SPARC v2.2, Solaris 11 for control and service domains, solaris 10 in the guest LDOMs.
    Thanks,
Edited by: DamnGoodCoffee! on Nov 2, 2012 4:59 AM

    Hi,
    1.
    - If you want that the vnet is handling the VLAN tagging for you, you need to set the pvid.
    - If you want to do the VLAN tagging in the guest LDOM (via the interface name vnetVLANID00x), it is OK.
    2. We use VLAN tagging in vnetX via setting the pvid for the vnet for guest LDOMs, and we use the interface name based VLAN tagging in the primary domain on the vsw interface.
    3. You don't need to recreate, you can set it. I'm not sure if you need to reboot to let it take effect, but IIRC it is dynamic (should be easy to test).
    Bye,
    Alexander.

  • Private virtual switch

    Hello!
There are two virtual switches: External and Private.
    Connections:
Private: test domain: virtual machines "DC" (20.1.1.2)  and "CLIENT" (20.1.1.3), "FW" (20.1.1.1)
External: virtual machine named "FW" (firewall) - 10.1.1.1
Virtual machine FW has two Vnics: 10.1.1.1 and 20.1.1.1, RRAS installed and routing is enabled.
The question: should virtual machines from the testing domain be able to access 10.1.1.0 network if FW is their default gateway (in other words, can vms connected to the PRIVATE switch access other subnets)?
    Thank you in advance,
    Michael

They can. It depends on how your FW firewall is configured.

Not sure if you figured this out but at least in my case, tagging the VSW with a VLAN id  when the port was already tagged on the switch generated this error.  When I recreated the VSW without specifying a VLAN id eliminated the error; all frames leaving the physical switch port will be tagged with its VLAN on egress anyway unless you're using multiple VLANs on the same port.

  • Hyper-V Network Virtual switches

    Hi,
    Good Day!
We have some doubts on Hyper-V Network Virtual Switches:
There are two physical NICs on a Hyper-V Host. One is connected to the public and other connects the internal VM Network. We create two virtual switches; "CustomerNetwork" and "PublicNetwork". "CustomerNetwork" has 192.168.x.x
series IP Address and "PublicNetwork" has a public IP Address.
We have also setup a software router VM with two virtual NICs. One vNIC connects to "CustomerNetwork" and other one connects to "PublicNetwork". We assign an IP address to the vNIC connected to "CustomerNetwork". The IP Address
    assigned is 192.168.2.99.
Confusion here is that we don't know which IP Address we should assign to the VNIC of router VM which is connected to "PublicNetwork". We have only one public IP Address. Shall we assign public IP Address to the VNIC of Router VM or the "PublicNetwork"
virtual switch or we should remove the public IP Address from the virtual switch?
Thank you for your time for clarifying our doubts! As always, appreciate your help!
    Thank You,
    Aurther L

On your router VM , Public IP should be assigned to Public network . Beaaware you are only allowed one external switch per hyper V host.  Alternatively Create two VNic from from Private network, Assign public IP to one and local IP to another
assuming you have internet connection on local network.
    hope this helps
    thanks

  • Server loses internet connection after creating virtual switch in hyper-v

On a fresh Server 2012R2 Essentials install, I set up Hyper-v and created an external virtual switch. Connection to the vm is good but Health Report no shows loss of internet connectivity and that the router is incorrectly setup.
However, I still have a working internet connection? I worry that the server may not update or allow Anywhere Access at some time. Any suggestions? Thanks

If Hyper-V virtual switch behaves strange and server is destined for testing, then it's correct and I recomend delete this virtual switch and create it again.
Here is some issues with internet connection and Hyper-V switch, none of them does not match your problem, but can be inspirative for troubleshooting:
Windows 8 Hyper-V - how to give VM internet access?
Hyper-V kills internet connection when bridging
Configuring Hyper-V for multiple subnets with only one NIC (Server 2008 R2 Edition)
How does basic networking work in Hyper-V?
    Best Regards,
