Vsync Screen Tearing / Scan Line Issue?

This is something I noticed on my iMac after updating to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. I noticed a horizontal break in the screen when I was doing any kind of graphic intensive operation. Anything from scrolling up and down on a web page in Safari, to switching screens in Spaces, to bring up my Dashboard or switching users with FUS. By opening a new movie recording in Quicktime X and simply moving the video around, you can clearly see this break is not a random screen tear, but actually some sort of scan line moving from top to bottom in my monitor. I've never seen this prior to Snow Leopard, but I suppose it is possible this is a hardware issue, rather than a software or driver issue. Can anyone else duplicate this on Snow Leopard? I am on a 2007 2.8 Core 2 Extreme iMac with RadeonHD2600 graphics.
I made a video of the issue and posted to youtube if you want to see what I am talking about.

I also get this issue in Snow Leopard when connecting my iMac up to a TV via the apply video adaptor. I didn't get this with Leopard and I don't get this on my iMac display.
I've been through all the video settings I can find (frame rates, display sizes, etc) and each one still has the issue. SL has changed the system preferences for external video so I guess something else may have also changed.

• IPhone 5 backlight, blue scan line issue fix

Found a fix for a double issue I was having, so thought I'd go ahead and post.  Reason being that it took fixing one before the other resolved.  I'd had an issue with the backlight on my iPhone 5 suddenly staying on after being used or even if a game notification came in or what not.  Then I had that blue scan line that flows back and forth across the phone suddenly come on as well.  Turning off/on the phone didn't help, nor did doing the off switch/home button reset thing.
What worked is going into Settings>General>Accessibility>Physical and Motor (down at the bottom) and then turning off the Switch Control.
I've had the blue scan line suddenly appearing issue before, and it seems the Switch Control comes on by itself because I've never gone in and turned it on.  But it was the first time I'd had the backlight issue paired with the scan line issue.
Hope this helps some others out.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

• 2011 iMac 27" Bootcamp AMD 6970M screen tearing/vertical sync issues on 2D Video Playback

Hi Everyone,
I am actually running an Radeon 6970M embedded graphics processor on an iMac 27" 2011 model running bootcamp and windows 7 64-bit.
I am having the same issues with the drivers Apple includes on the bootcamp DVD, as I am having with the drivers download from the AMD website dated 4/13/2012 with the filename:
8.96-120315a-135852C-EDG_Direct
The issue I believe is with vertical sync on any 2d video playback or even in normal desktop actions. I see screen tearing visible in normal Windows 7 operations (click and draw a rectangle on the desktop and I see screen tearing).
When I watch flash videos in google chrome or in internet explorer (ie: Hulu Plus, or netflix) I see screen tearing. It is much more visible in the flash videos.
I also see screen tearing when viewing downloaded .MKV or .AVI content, so the issue is not just with flash. I have tried Windows Media Player and VLC player.
I also have tried turning on vsync to always on in the catalyst control center->Gaming->3d applications, but that didn't make any difference. I didn't think it would because it is 2D content that I am having trouble with.
The monitor has a mode for 59hz. When I reduce the refresh rate to 59hz, there seems to be less screen tearing but it is still visible. What is the issue?

I was having the same problem - I think I remember figuring it out. It was because I had set windows to display everything at a zoomed level - you do this in Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Display. Set it back to 100% and the tearing problem should disappear.
I think it's likely due to a subpar graphics card driver.

• Macbook Pro 2015 Base line model, screen tearing and scroll "lag"

When I scroll up and down I notice "screen lag" in where in applications folder scrolling up and down the icons look slow and sluggish. When I move windows left and right up and down you can see screen tearing, a line mid way of the window when moving it up and down or left and right with heavy ghosting. Am I crazy or my macbook has issues?

Your MBP is under warranty.  Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and have it repaired.
Ciao.

• Possible solution for white C2D iMacs with screen artifacts or lines

I have a white 20" Core 2 Duo iMac with the famous screen artifacts issues. Screen tearing, horizontal lines, goofy pixels, you name it. From my research it seems there are countless others with these problems.
I tried running the SMC fan control app to boost fan speeds. This helped a little, but did not completely solve the issue. A lot of people think these issues are related to heat, and I agree, but only partially. When a graphics chip overheats it is eventually damaged. I have damaged my share of graphics chips while overclocking them in my PCs. In the case of my iMac and maybe plenty of others, I still have issues if the GPU is hot or cold.
I installed WinXP using bootcamp. I finally found an application which will change the clock speed of the GPU on the fly. The X1600 GPU in my iMac has a 475Mhz core speed and 500Mhz memory speed. I cut these down to 400Mhz on the core and 400Mhz on the memory. At these lower speeds I no longer have any issues with screen tearing, horizontal lines, or random crashing. I do still have a few wierd pixels here and there, but they are not all that noticeable and I can live with them.
Now for the fun part. I wanted to permanently fix these speeds into my GPU so when I boot back to Mac OS X, I don't have any issues, and I no longer have to boost fan speeds or run any additional apps. I spent most of today taking apart my iMac, putting DOS on a spare SATA hard drive, and running an external monitor while booting my iMac with the spare drive hanging out the side. All this so I can run ATIflash, and use it to dump an image of the GPU BIOS ROM file.
Well, I ended up finding out the ATI GPU has no ROM to flash. My best guess is open firmware or something like that passes this data on to the GPU when the system boots.
So, in my case slowing the GPU down significantly reduced my problems while running within windows. I am 100% confident slowing the GPU down will also improve issues within Mac OS X, but I have no way to pull this off.
If Apple reads this, or if anyone has any connections at Apple, can we please get an optional firmware update to reduce the speeds of the X1600 GPU? It won't fix all the iMacs with these issues, but it will fix quite a few, and for those out there who don't have any issues at all with their white C2D iMacs, lowering the GPU speeds will most likely prevent damage from inevitably occurring, keeping them a happy customer.
Now, some of you may not like the idea of a slower GPU, but if I have to pick between a slower GPU and an $800 logic board, I will take the slower GPU any day.

• IPhone 4s scan lines and other issues?

So I recently bought an iphone off of craigslist in June  (Biggest mistake I've ever made). I met up with the person and the iphone looked pretty fine to me, who's never had an iphone btw, but as soon as I got home I noticed slight lines going across the screen. They were red and blue. They bothered me, but not too much. It effected the back camera more than the front but I said hey I can live with it considering I got the phone really cheap. Well now it's been 3 months since and it's gotten much worse. The scan lines are worse, the screen freezes, then fades to black. Also when I try to use the camera everything goes green and distorted then turna inverted. And when I try to look at pictures they have vertical lines thru them so I cant even make out what it is. If I really want to see a picture I have to screen shot it to get a quick glimpse. Also I noticed the screen freaks out more when there is color. So say I'm on my screen lock and my screen lock is just white, then the horizontal lines arent too bad. But if I go to my home page were all the apps have color, it freaks out. Or when I go on instagram, it completely wigs out and the screen freezes and fades out. I haven't dropped it accept once off the table and cracked the back, but I had this problem before so I know that's not why. I don't know if it has any water damage from the previous owner. The only thing she mentioned was that the screen was cracked. Please if you know what's wrong or have any advice please let me know. Thank you.

The screen needs to be replaced.
You can see if the phone have been in contact with water by looking at the indicators. You'll find dem here: http://km.support.apple.com/library/APPLE/APPLECARE_ALLGEOS/HT3302/HT3302-iphone _4-activated-001-mul.png
If they turn out to be read that indicates that the phone is water damaged.
You should talk to folks at apple to here what they can do to help you out.
Good lock!

• Screen Tearing Issues

As of today, my Mac Mini has experienced severe screen tearing issues, it generally happens on Chrome but has started to also happen on other applications such as Pages. My Mac Mini is virtually brand new and has been used for about 2 weeks. I am using an TV via an HDMI cable. It is the 2.3ghz model with 4gb RAM.  The OS is Mavericks. I have tried restarting but that didn't help. Plus the Mac is now hot with very little apps open (Minecraft, Chrome (1tab)) and the fan is loud.

Doesn't sound good... You have 90 days free phone support and a one year warranty on your Mac Mini.
I would Contact Apple Support or the Apple Store where you made the purchased and have it checked out.
Additionally you might wat to get AppleCare, which extends the phone support and warranty to three full years.

• Firefox version 22 screen tearing issue with video

So I've updated to Firefox 22 and have recently started noticing this really annoying screen tearing issue when scrolling. its only when i use Firefox sometimes it happens when I'm watching videos sometimes it just happens on normal every day pages. I've tried to duplicate this issue in other browsers (Chrome) and it just only seems to happen with Firefox. anyone else experienced this and knows how to stop it? kinda annoying

Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
* You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
Thank you.

• Successful 15" screen replacement (Line Issue)

After purchasing a BTO PowerBook G4 15.2 1.67 DL, I quickly noticed the now well-known “white lines” issue. Initially, I called AppleCare, and sent my PB in for a depot-repair (with a copy of the “crankycat image” AND a copy of http://www.cameraid.com/art/quadrants.gif (found in this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=280560&tstart=45) . A week later, I received my PB with a note indicating “ Unable to duplicate issue). I then took my PB to my local Apple Store, and had one of their technicians look at it. After seeing the “Quadrants” image on my PB and looking at it on a 17” display model, the technician agree to take my PB in for repair. Today, I picked up my PB, thinking there was no way it would be repaired. However, the new screen DOES NOT display the line issue). To re-cap, I initially had a PB WITH the “line issue”, and now the same machine, with a new display, DOES NOT have the line issue. I really did not want to purchase the 17”, and was a bit apprehensive about purchasing one of the new MacBook Pro’s (I’ll wait until the 2nd Gen), so I am completely thrilled to now have a display w/o the line problem. So, I can confirm there are “line-less” 15” displays out there, from having seen both first hand.
Thank You Apple Care...
BTO PowerBook G4 15.2 1.67 DL   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

48K,
Yes, I'm Sure. I checked with the "crankycat" and the "quadrants" images. It was pretty noticeable on my original screen, particularly if I dragged the images vertically one pixel at a time (esp. the quadrants). Just to make sure, I double checked the images on the display 15" models (each of which DOES have the "lines problem." On the new screen, the top two "quadrants" DO NOT shift at all, and the colors are identical. The bottom two "quadrants are slightly darker than the top two, but this also appears to be the case on EVERY screen I have tested (including the CRT on my Mac-Mini). Like I said, the top two do not shift at all (previously, the shades of grey DID shift).
There are NO LINE at all doing the F11 "trick" on the new screen, but the old screen DID have the lines.
I pressed the "Detect Display" button in Display Preferences, and made sure to choose "Color LCD." Note: it still has a magenta caste, but not as bad as the previous screen.
Unfortunately, I didn't get a lot of time to talk to the tech (they were pretty busy). So, I don't have an answer to your question about a new batch of displays. I do know, they did replace the screen, and did NOT replace the logic board.
My machine was in repair for about a week.
I have owned this machine for slightly over a month. So, I was past the 14 day return policy.
I DO have AppleCare (That Helped).

• Safari only(?) screen tearing issues

Has anybody else seen issues similar to this:
I installed https://gfx.io to check which GPU might be causing the problem. It seems to be the Nvidia GPU.
Certain websites trigger the graphics card switching between Intel/Nvidia fairly frequently; one such site is http://www.natgeomaps.com/
If i reload the page/click on a link and the graphics card switches during the transition to the new page, I will occasionally get screen tearing. I can't replicate this in Chrome, but that may be a timing issue, or Chrome not using the Nvidia card.
Any ideas what to try? No software updates available, so everything is up to date.

Go step by step and test.
1. Empty Caches
        Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
2. Delete Cookies
Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies and other website data:
        Click “Remove All Website Data”.
3. Safari > Preferences > Extensions
Turn off Extensions if any and launch Safari again to test.
Turn on those one by one and test.

• How do you get rid of scan lines found on the iphone screen?

I have a black iphone 4s.  It was working perfectly fine until a week ago where i noticed small "scan lines" towards the middle and bottom of the screen.  I am also seeing small red specks in pictures.  Is there any way to get rid of these lines and specks?  I am on IOS 6.1.3 (not sure if that has anything to do with it lol).

Sounds like your display is dying.  Bring your phone to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

• Macbook Pro 13" Screen Tearing Issue

Just recently purchased a new 13" Macbook Pro 2.4GHz, and noticed that when I am playing videos or even dragging a window across the screen, there is quite a considerable amount of screen tearing. I don't know whether this is to do with the video card, but the playback of videos is quite bad and the tearing is very noticeable. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the exact same problem (mid 2010 model, 2.66) i notice it happens when i quit a 3D video game like sims 3 or half life 2, even after the graphics update today. Its the worst when zoomed in (control + scrolling)
a temporary fix i ave found is putting the computer to sleep and then waking it again seems to fix it, but after a while it always comes back

• Scan lines appearing, screen becomes unuseab;e

Ok, Hi.
First off, It’s been a long time (nigh on 7 years) since I used a mac laptop last, so I just wanted to make sure that it’s not something I’m doing wrong. I just bought a brand spanking new Alu macbook online which arrived yesterday. Considering how much the thing cost I really AM hoping I’m doing something wrong. Anyway, there are points where the display appears to “White out”. It fills with what look like vertical scan lines and fades to white. Before filling the screeen with them, making it impossible to see. It looks kind of like a loose connection that I used to get on one of the really old models. Is there anything I can do, or do I have to go and get my brand new laptop replaced on it’s second day?

Unfortunately, it sounds like you got a bad one. It will need to go back to Apple.

• Screen Tearing / no Vertical Sync problem on 9400M powered Mac

Does anyone have a fix for the ugly screen tearing issue that happens on the nvidia 9400M powered Macs?
If you don't see it or know what i'm talking about, open up Safari or Firefox, go to slashdot.org for example and scroll slowly up and down the page. You will see horizontal lines "tearing" and an almost jerky display (on Macs with 9400M cards only). This problem plagued windows XP and is a huge reason I prefer Mac's.
Please Apple fix this, or offer an explanation. Anyone else want this fixed or know of a way to force vsync or triple buffering?

Hi, we have the same radeon card as you and am also suffering from the tearing issue. Did you ever manage to resolve the problem?
Cheers

• MacBook Pro 17'' Early 2011 Screen Strange Horizontal lines in some colors

Hello guys,
I've just got my new Flagrant MacBook Pro 17'' Sandy Bridge i7 2.3Ghz 8GB SSD512 with Glossy screen and is amazing.... But...
I am incredibly disappointed with the quality of the screen (or maybe the videocard?) I come from the previous generation MacBook Pro i7 15inches and the quality of the screen was superb. Now on this new 17'' screen I see some wired horizontal (very tiny) lines in bright colors (very difficult to notice by an untrained, not to hock to perfection eye). This was actually the first thing I saw when booting my mac for the first time as the gray apple appeared not to have a perfect gray color. First thing I did was going to an Apple Retail store we have here in Barcelona (Catalonia) and strangely the MacBook that was in there had a very similar issue. Is not something you can easily notice, but if you look close to the screen you can see this lines. I am not really an expert, so I don't know if this could be a problem of the videocard (does ATI cards have less image quality than nVIdia?) or is a reduction of quality of the 17'' screen compared to the 15''?
I am very annoyed by this, and I am considering to return my laptop as I'm really not getting used to it. Does anybody know if this affects all new MacBook Pro's 17''?
I'll try to get a camera with a macro to upload a picture and give you an example.
Thank you guys.

This guys is having EXACTLY the same problem that I detected:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/10624006#10624006
And his explanation is quite clear
(copied from this post)
Description: Every other horizontal pixel row appears brighter than the alternate, creating a scan-line style effect that also contributes to the washing out of the display. In seemingly random "luck of the draw" machines, lines can either be highly visible or not be present at all.
In displays where it is faint, you may not notice, but once you become aware of it is a real problem if you work closely with your computer, and graphics.
This appears to be the same issue that has been widely reported in the past with Macbook Air computers.
The three computers that I have had this issue with:
1 - Glossy, 9C99, lines visible even from three feet away.
2 - Glossy, 9C99, lines about half the visibility
3 - Matte, 9CAC, lines again about half the visibility of #1
I have also had 3 glossies and 1 matte that have not had these lines at all. 3 Unibody 15" MBPs have also not had any such lines. I have also been unable to detect these lines on any non-Apple computers I have observed, nor any of Apple's other models or displays.
I put a 17" Matte without the lines next to one with the lines and attempting to take photos, but could not get them to turn out at all for a variety of annoying reasons (unclear image, moire effects, etc). I was however able to take extremely close macro shots and there is a difference visible in the pixel arrangements, apparently.
Who else has this one their display?
Thanks
