W\RT 160N

I have set up a WRT 160N for WEP128 bit security. A new HP desktop with wireless N, a legacy HP, bu\ laptop, and a HP Officejet HP7410 all-in-one, and my iPhone connect just fine. My new Dell Studio will not connect. I have set it up with the WEP key but get a message that the network needs either a certificate or a log on name and password. Any suggestions on the Dell connection problem.

First of all, WEP is almost useless as far a security is concerned...a chimp with a laptop and software anyone can download from the internet can crack it is less than 30 seconds...if you want your wireless network to be secure, use WPA or WPA2 (WPA2 is preferred) with AES encryption.
Secondly, which version of the 160N do you have?
There is a known issue with intermittent connectivity and the Build 11 firmware for the WRT160N V2. Build 11 is the current firmware on the Linksys site. Check to see if you have Build 11 if your router is a V2.
Downgrading to Build 8 is generally accepted to correct these issues, however Linksys have indicated to several people they do not have the build 8 firmware to give to end users.
This is ONLY for WRT160N V2 routers. This firware will not work on WRT160N V1.
You can find it at http://audipages.com/router/
I would highly recommend having stable firmware (ie build 8) on your router before proceeding.

• Hooking up a Westell E90-610015-06 and a Linksys WRT 160N?

Please help me. I have spent hours trying to get my Linsys WRT 160N wireless router to work with my Westell 6100 modem (E90-610015-06). I have tried the suggestions from dslreports, so please do not send me a link to this website. Setting the modem to bridge and setting the wireless router to PPPoE does not work. Also, changing the IP address on the router does not work. Does anyone have any other ideas?

changing the IP Address does work.
You might be doing something differently.
Let me tell you a few things to check
You have to open your NIC properties
make sure its set like this
Then plug your PC into your linksys, or make sure you connect to it wirelessly.
put in 192.168.1.1
http://ui.linksys.com/files/WRT54G/v1-v4/4.20.7/
Change the Local IP Address on the first page to reflect 192.168.0.1.
Then plug your linksys into the westell.
reboot the linksys, then reboot the pc (or you can do a repair, or an ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew in DOS) and as long as the westell is online, everything else will pass internet traffic through
I hook those up all the time the same way and they work just fine.
if it doesn't work again this time let us know, and KEEP IN MIND this is how it should ultimately look
Wall -> westell -> linksys plugged into the yellow ethernet port, and plugged into where it says WAN on the linksys
then your PC wirelessly connects to the linksys.

• Wrt 160n router using N adapter

Have a 160N router that has performed fine using my G wireless adapters. Recently installed a wirless adapter with 300 mbps capability to attempt to to get the benefit of the "N" feature on the router. It works fine but it still connects at 54mbps, do i need to do somthing to get it to work at the higher speed?

What is the version number of the Router...?
Try the following settings on the router...
Under the Advance Wireless settings...Disable Frame Burst,Change N Transmission Rate to 15-130Mbps,Change Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...
Power Cycle the router and check.

• Router model wrt 160n v2 help!

i have a router wrt 160n v2 and i need a good amount of help ive tryed calling linksys support and they tell me the same thing everytime and its not the problem, i have a modem that uses a USB and before its worked just fine then about 3 weeks ago its just went out. So i went to go buy (the model above) to replace it and when i hooked it up it shows it connected in port on the little sign that looks like waves are being sent out is lighting up and the power is lighting up. but the one that looks like saturn WILL NOT LIGHT UP! best buy told me i need to have the thing configured and im thinking thats it but linksys is telling me i need to call my internet porvideder and get a new modem which is not the case so i think its just need to be configured can anyone help?

I think in this case you need to reset your router and reconfigure the settings on it. First Connect the Modem to Linksys router on Internet Port and your computer to Linksys router on Port No.1. Once the Physical Connection is done, Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
Click Here to Configure your router with Cable ISP.
Click Here to Configure your router with DSL ISP.

• WRT 160N Games loosing network connections

When I am playing MW2 and Socom Confrontation (on PS3) or any game I get a message, and go to the main screen saying No internet connection deteced you must have a active network connection to play this game. I not only get this from online gameplay, but even if I leave myself signed in I lose the internet and the same message occurs. I checked with my laptop EasyLink Adviser map and the whole network goes down. It's not the PS3 because I had it serveced for a diffrent issue with video, but this is ridiculous. I paid 75 dollars for this router and im pretty mad with Linksys because the same thing happened with my G Linksys router. ....More Info My network provider is BrightHouse but this also happenes with Knology. The WRT 160N v.3 is wireless what's wrong? Someone please help ME!!! I'm going to throw the router through a window then pick it up and go to another WINDOW!!

When the internet goes down on your PS3, at that moment you can check if you are still able to go online from your Laptop or not?
On your Router setup page change the MTU size to 1365 and click on save Settings and then click on the Wireless tab and below change the Wireless Channel to 11 and then click on the "Advance Wireless Settings" and below Change the Beacon Interval to 50 ...Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 ...Click on "Save Settings"...

• Add another computer to a WRT 160N

On Thursday I bought a new WRT 160N. I followed the instructions and I can connect my wife's laptop to the new wireless network with no problem. Managing the network, connecting to the internet wirelessly, etc. with my wife's computer is a snap. Trying to connect my 6-year-old laptop to wireless internet through the new router is another story. My laptop can see the wireless network. But when I try to connect, enter in the WEP given in the EasyLink Advisor, and wait for the internet to work, my computer pings the network but nothing happens. Adding to my frustration is this: my network (which I run through my wife's laptop) can see my old laptop. When I follow the prompts to add my laptop to my wireless network, it asks if I the computer has a removable media device. I click yes, follow the directions (insert the USB device into the old computer--which it has no trouble reading), and the network says that no USB device could be detected. When I try to outsmart the EasyLink advisor and say that my old computer does not have a USB media device and go through the prompts the EasyLink Advisor eventually brings up a window with my network's security settings that I should use to connect my old laptop to the network. The only problem is that the computer only displays the top 1/3 of the relevant letters and numbers (we don't have a printer yet). Even if I could read or print the relevant information, I wouldn't know where to enter it on my old laptop.
All I want to do is connect my old laptop to the internet without entering in a long string of letters and numbers or relying on my wife's computer. I also want to make sure that connecting the old laptop does not leave my network open to intruders.

I have the same issues! My laptop is only 2 years old however. This is what I did to fix the issues. FIRST: GET RID OF THE LINKSYS SOFTWARE off ur old computer! Let the laptop find the router and connect with its default software. SECOND: go to ur router setup(the website that is the router IP) under the "Wireless" tab set the "Network Mode" to Wireless-G only" as ur old computer probably cant use the N. When I had it on "Mixed" which means it should use all the types it had MANY issues with the old computer.... I hope these things help you!
message me if you need help, I am pulling my hair out trying to fix MY issues... as in the lack of connectivity in an 850 sq ft apt... Ultra Range eh???

• WRT 160n v2 as a wireless repeater

I have a E4200 as my main router and would like to use my old WRT 160n v2 as a wireless repeater upstairs. I am getting the impression that I can't do that with v2...Is there any way I can make this work?

If the User Manual or the routers UI doesn't mention or display any Repeater funtions, then it would not be supported. The next best option would be to wired LAN to LAN AP mode and set it up as a additional wireless AP:
http://www.northshore-it.com/tips/how-tos/cascade_linksys/#LAN_to_LAN
Or Cascade the router as BigDave mentioned.

• Upgrading from 54g to a 160N router

I have a home network sharing files and printers. I have had a wrt54g wireless router for the severla months and I have not had any major issues with the internet or home networking. I moved to a new home with 2 floors. I noticed that the signal strenght became LOW on the lap tops. I was told to upgrade to a wrt160N router so that the signal strenght would improve greatly. I installed the new router and since then I have had nothing but trouble. Now I cannot see the list of the other computers on my home network. I can only see the one computer, depending which one I am on. I cannot see the other computers or their shared files at all. I have contacted Linksys 15 times in the past 2 weeks trying to get help. I keep getting disconnected after being placed on hold for hours each time or I get a tech that really does not know how to help me or doesn't want to even try and help. I have been told that a senior tech needs to help me with this issue but I can never be placed thru to one without being disconnected every time. For some strange reason I get disconnected each time. All I want to be able to do is to have what I had all along and that is a home network which I am able to see each computer and its shared folders, files and printers. I want to be able to access them only at my home and not remotely. I want to be able for all of my computers to have access to the internet as usual. This is what I had until I call myself getting something bigger and better. I have lost my home networking capabilities, but I am able to access the internet from all the computers. How can I get back to where I was. The tech support say they do not support home networking. I thought that that is what they specialized in the networking, be it home or internet. In the past I was able to get assistance from them, now they say that they do not support home networking, they only help you get to the internet. Well the internet is not the main reason for having a home network using the wireless 54G or the 160N. If there are some settings, that Linksys tech support is not sharing for some reason or another, please hlep me and let me know what the setting are so I can get my home office back together again. I have a home business and I have always used the basic home network that is provided by microsoft for my systems via the wireless54g. By the way, I have contacted Microsoft, my cable IP, and both say that there is not an issue with their end, it is the Linksys device being that I had no issues until I changed units. If there is a solution out there, I beg you to please share it with me, otherwise, I will be forced to return the 160N and go back to my original setup with a low internet signal, but at least I will be networked together and have the ability to share files without having to run from computer to computer all the time. In the subject line, please put the word SOLUTION so I can distinguish it from junk mail. Thanks.

Hyperlink Techologies.com offers some innovative products for wireless communications. One such item is another wifi antenna, Where you can place the antenna in another room or floor. Of course, you can't go wrong with upgrading to the N router.

• Wrt-160n won't configure Wi-Fi protected

Hi,
I am not able to configure my Wi-Fi protected, just manual is done. I have a wrt-160n v3, and make the update of the router, but that change nothing. Anybody have an idea, why I can not configure Wi-Fi.
Paul

Always configure WiFi in MANUAL mode only.

• Print spooler not working since installing LinkSys WRT 160N

Since installing my WRT160N my printers have stopped working. All printer drivers have been removed including acrobat and my fax.
Even if I try reinstalling my drivers, I get the following error:
Spooler SubSystem App has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Prior to this error my firewall was giving me constant warnings about Pure Networks Admin assistant application trying to access the same files(i.e. nmctxth.exe). Even though I allowed it still kept popping up.
I am using the online armor firewall on a Windows XP system.
I cannot access the LinkSys Advisor anymore as it will not start.
Thanks

I had the exact same thing happen to me. Installed a WRT 160N on May 10 and have not been able to print since. Wasn't sure it was the router until I dug into the event log. This message appears as a warning during the time I was installing:
Printer Driver Microsoft XPS Document Writer for Windows NT x86 Version-3 was added or updated. Files:- mxdwdrv.dll, unidrvui.dll, mxdwdui.gpd, unidrv.hlp, mxdwdui.dll, mxdwdui.ini, stddtype.gdl, stdnames.gpd, stdschem.gdl, stdschmx.gdl, unidrv.dll, unires.dll, XpsSvcs.dll.
Apparently we tried to print something a couple of days later and this error appears:
DCOM got error "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. " attempting to start the service lxcf_device with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{323CE21C-A448-40AA-BA74-7FCF1E44106F}
Any help out there? Windows says I have a spooler dll file missing and also keep getting an error message about "RPC server not available." What should I do?
thanks!

• 160N IP address conflict

My new 160N is connected to desktop (hard-wired) and then wireless to laptop. Strangely, I lose internet connection on desktop while computers both see each other and laptop continues to have internet connection. When I lose desktop internet I get message about IP address conflict.
I have current firmware and reset router several times. I have IP address set to auto. Range is excellent on router. I'm running Vista.

Kevj (below) solved my problem. Downgrading from build 11 to build 8 is the answer. It's unbelievable that the techies I called at Linksys didn't tell me to try it. They finally told me to return defective router. Linksys could have saved all their time, my aggravation and countless returned routers. Mine was ready to be returned - Had the RMA no. and box ready. Everything running great now.

• WRT 160N: Internet Dropping one of two New Toshiba (Windows 7) Laptops.

Can anyone shed any light as to why I would be losing my internet connection on one labtop, while I have 2 others (along with a desktop) and two iphones that continously hold their connections? The desktop is running Windows Vista, one laptop is running XP and the two new Toshiba laptops are running Windows 7.
I have had this Cicsco Linksys (WRT 160N) router for about a year and it's been fine and all the connections hold just fine, until I bought my newest laptop 2 weeks ago. It connects into the router just fine and holds the connection at times, but most of the time I'll get to the first website and then when I change it will get hung up and say it's not able to connect.
I would think that if it was an issue with the router maxing out (is there a maximum # of laptops that can be linked into the router?) that I would have issues with all components and not just this Toshiba L675 laptop. It show's that I'm connected to the router all the time, it just indicates in the network icon that it has "No Internet" until I refresh it. I obviously want to refresh every 10 seconds and sometimes that doesn't even work.
Any suggestions, as I'm seriously thinking about taking the laptop back, but I don't really think it's the laptop.
I appreciate any insight any of you might have on this issue.
Thanks!

Check for the model number of the Wireless Network Adapter of your Toshiba Laptop, If required try to update the wireless network adapter drivers and then check if you face the same problem or not.
On your Toshiba Laptop, under the wireless network adapter properties, Uncheck "QoS Packet Scheduler" "TCP/IPv6" and then try to connect to your wireless network again and then check .

• 160n halt when connected using this method

hi there,
I have the following scenario which cause router 160n to be down
I have a 160n linksys router which is used as dsl router and directly connected to the internet, and I have another linksys router 160n which is connected to the first 160n router "DSL Router", and linux server (Squid & dhcp) which is also connected directly to the first 160n router " DSL router",
the problem accurs when I turn my linux srever on, the DSL router start flashing its lights and stop working until I disconnect my server and restart the router.
I wonder if anybody can help,
thanks with best regards

Make sure you have different IP for both routers and they are cascaded correctly. Search the Linksys web site on how to cascade two routers correctly.

• 160N Help

My network used to consist of a WRT54G a wireless G range extender, a wired xbox 360, a wired PC, 3 wireless PC's with WMP54G PCI cards, and a wireless laptop with a Netgear G card all in a 30 foot radius. The wireless connnection was good, speeds were good, etc. but every now and then, the signal would drop and I'd have to unplug the router for 30 seconds to get the signal back.So I decided to remedy this with a 160N router.
Problem 1: I can't put the router in anything but G mode only, otherwise the 3 wireless PC's reboot non stop and/or give blue screens of death.
Problem 2: I get A LOT LESS signal quality and speed on the 3 wireless PC's.
Am I missing something? Is this normal? Any help is appreciated, thanks. vBy the way, everything wired works fine.

It doen't seems to be normal .... but if it is happening in your network ... change few of the wireless settings on the router such as Radio Band - 40Mhz Wide Channel - 6 Standard Channel - 8 Chekc on the wireless computer if the Blue Screen of Death is gone or not...

• How to change the passphrase on my WRT 160N V3

A few months ago, I purchase, installed and configured a WRT 160N V3.
And I couldn't be happier.
I now would like to go back and change the passphrase that a user needs to enter when they connecting to my router.
Currently it uses the default value.
And I would like to make it a bit more friendly.
I found a number of postings dealing with setting retrieving or changing the Admin password.
But I was not able to find anything on changing the “passphrase”.
There probably are a number of postings on the subject, and I simply overlooked them.
I wonder if someone might be able to point me in the right direction.
Thanks

Welcome to the Cisco Home Community.
Type 192.168.1.1 on your routers address bar and log in. Default is to leave username blank and type admin in the password field.
Go to Wireless then Wireless Security. You should see your passphrase there.
The Search Function is your friend.... and Google too.
