W2K boots and then.. stuck !!

Hi all,
1st posting so bear with me.
I've got a MS6585 mainboard which was purchased a couple of mnths ago. All has been fine till Istarted playing with removing/adding disks. I now have my orginal configuration back on, and once w2k boots up and I put in my userid/pwd, I get a pop up window sayign that "either pagefile is too small or does not exist". It tells me to increase, the size, etc, etc. The pb is that I keep on getting the login screen back and never get the chance to go to the desktop, therefore stuck=shutdown/restart.
I've tried booting in safemode as well, same results.
I then tried to repair my w2k install, and when the system tries to boot 1st time from disk, I get the blue screen complaining about "an invalid exception memory error" or something along those lines.
My w2k pro has all the required patches to perform  "normally" and since the motherboard
is only 2mnths old, I guess that the Bios is also uptodate.
Any ideas that you'd like to share with me?? Apologies for the long winded topic..
thanks..

This has happened to me before when I had repartitioned the drive, and the system drive letter had changed.  It confused the hell out of windows and the only way to solve it was to:
A/ Go through lots of hassle with the registry in rescue mode
B/ Reinstall, slap my wrists and tell myself off for being so careless.
Also if u r a performance junkie and put your swap file on a different drive and have recently added a CD, DVD, HD or whatever it could change the drive letters and again it will screw up everything.
Also use NTFS where possible and not FAT32 - it's better at recovering from unexpected resets etc.
Best thing is to use the Knowledge Base at MS and put your symptoms in yourself:

Try the usual steps: restart, reset, restore.

If restoring using a backup doesn't help, try restoring the iPhone to factory settings and try for a while with just the Apple-included apps, to make sure it's not an issue with a third-party app. If it still has problems, it may have a hardware problem and will need to be sent to Apple.

THank you Ogelthorpe. When my wife's computer I went on line to the site that you sent and tried everything But nothing worked. When my son came to visit and his MacBook Pro did exactly the same thing we became suspicious - too much of a coincidence. We took both computers somewhere else, out of our apartment, and they both booted. We ran disk utility on both, but the report in both cases was that there are no issues with the hard drive.  Back in our apartment neither will boot up. My MacBook Pro is a later model with a solid state drive and it seems to work fine here.. I tried an external drive and it works fine. We think that this has something to do with some kind of magnetic interference in our apartment to which the 2009  drives are susceptible.  It is indeed a mystery!

  • It worked, but now loads only halfway and then stucks..

Hi, I have a shiny new 27" iMac (OS 10.8.2) and a iPhone 4 (iOS 6.1.2). I've already connected them successfully via Home Sharing, but out of a sudden, it doesen't work anymore. It loads halfway and then stucks
Restarted all devices and the modem. At all other Apple products HS is turned off.
It's a bit annoying, why has everything to be so difficult and time consuming

Really NO ONE can help me with this issue...?

Something is messed up with the Disk.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

  • MDD boots and then goes to sleep immediately

have a dual gig MDD and suddenly the thing just started going to sleep or powering down right after booting up.
i've taken everything out and unplugged eveything to bring it back to it's intial state; i've zapped pram; i've pulled the battery; nothing seems to help.
with the hardware cd as the boot, i get the following
    Invalid memory access at %SRR0: 00034870 %SRR1: 00003030
    USB Setup Error: 40140000 400001
    bad Bus info CRC-16
    Apple PowerMac3,6 4.4.8f2 BootROM built on 09/30/02 at 10:24:31
which made me think it might be one of the RAM sticks. so i've puleld them, tried with just one and still nothing, swapped sticks, no go. with the cd in, when it goes to sleep, upon waking i get:
    Decrementer exception at %SRR0: 056106dc %SRR1: 00003030
at first i thought it might be the boor drive but since booting from the CD still causes the problem, my guess is the MoBo.
if anyone can help me out, maybe something i've missed so i dont have to spend $500 on a new MoBo, i would be very grateful

An overheating proc can definitely make the thing go to sleep. But I don't know what would make the fan power stop working. I believe that's controlled by the PMU, but you've reset that.
I've seen some pretty strange PMU-related behavior, so nothing would really surprise me. Just today, I found that my firewire ports weren't working - they'd power peripherals, but I couldn't get either of my FW drives to show on the desktop. I booted to two different internal drives and had the same problem. I reset the PRAM, NVRAM, and the PMU and no improvement. Finally, I unplugged the PRAM battery, hit the PMU reset button, and let it sit an hour before plugging it all in again and viola - firewire worked!
It might seem redundant, but if I were in your shoes, I'd unplug that PRAM battery again, hit the reset button, leave it out for a couple of hours, and then plug it all in again to be absolutely sure. Also, be sure never to press the PMU button twice between starts.

  • Grey bar shows up when booting and then iMac shuts down

    Hello,
when I turned on my iMac (early 2010, Mountain Lion) today, strangely, after the apple logo, it showed up a login page (It never showed up before). I choosed my user and password and it came back to the same screen.
Then I rebooted my Mac a grey bar showed up in the apple logo screen and it took about 30 min for it to reach the end. When the bar was at the end the mac shut off.
I can go to my windows partition without any problem but i noticed the mac hd is now named "EPI Boot".
I tried to install a fresh copy of the osx but the hard drive is locked.
In the disk utility menu, the Macintosh HD is greyed out and if I try to mount it it gives an error saying I need to repair it first, but if I try to repair it, another error shows up saying the disk utility cannot repair this disk.
I tried to boot up pressing CMD-V to see what is going on and this shows up:
It does this 3 times and then says it cannot repair the disk and shuts off.
    Thank you for your time.

Ok, I booted the mac using Disk Warrior, the MacHD wasn't showing up but after waiting a while it showed up. I repaired the disk using the software and now it's working

  • IMac G5 boots, and then goes to black screen

This is not my iMac, but a friend who is using this that she got from here son who upgraded to an Intel iMac. The hardware is a G5 20 iMac. I don't have any more information since it wont power on....or have the installation disks...
The symptoms are that the machine will power on, "bong" show the blue apple screen, then the spinning lines and then suddenly a black screen and nothing more. I booted to single user via Command-S and ran fsck to ensure the disk was clean. Ir reported no errors, but halfway through the check the fans came on full. Only having experienced an Inetl iMac's fans, they were very load. When the fsck finished (with no errors) the fans turned off again. When i exitied the shell to reboot, the same thing happened again. Black screen and not repsonse.
The fact that I can get to single user shell and check the disks points to most of it working, but I'm confused as to why it gets no further.
ANy help would be appreciated as she want to migrate from her current PC based workflow to a more reliable(!) one, but this isn't helping....
    Thanks,
    Jimmy

Thanks to the responders for their input. I was fearing the worst. However, it looks like the issue wasn't as serious as a broken capacitor. I don't understand why the following worked, as it's not as if the machine was always not working, but just started.
As part of the diagnostic process, the back was opened and then the memory reseated. After reboot this still failed. Then Command Option O F to get into open firmware and then
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
and the machine rebooted and came up again.
So far there have been no problems, but it looks like this was the fix.

  • When I turn on my macbook air, it starts to boot and then stops and turns off.  How do I fix this?

When I try to turn my MacBook Air on, it starts to boot (gray screen with Apple logo and the swirling indicator) but then it simply shuts off. I have tried Safe Booting but that doesn't work either.
Does anyone have a suggestion as I really need to get a couple of files off the hard drive.

The progress bar on the apple screen indicates that the machine is attempting to boot to safe mode.
Boot your mac and holds down the Option key to boot to the boot manager.
Once in the boot manager click on macintosh HD and click the arrow to boot, this should boot your machine normally.
    Also perform an SMC/PRAM reset:
    SMC RESET:
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
    PRAM RESET:
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
If these fail, insert your OSX dvd, boot to boot manager, click the disc, reinstall the mac OSX.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot, and then frozen by SBBOD

My MacBook Pro constantly freezes when I try to perform any task.  I frequently encounter the spinning beach ball of death.  Even if I don't see it then accomplishing anything is nearly impossible!  The computer starts up very slowly and displays the gray screen and spinning gear for a prolonged period of time.  Often times the computer won't start up at all and freezes on the gray screen.
    My System
    15" MacBook Pro - mid 2009
2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB RAM
Hard drive has 370 GB free out of 500
    Fixes attempted
    Repaired disk permissions
Uninstalled nonessential apps, including antivirus software (Avast was removed months ago)
CPU activity appears ok, frozen processes stopped
    Trash emptied
Computer booted in safe mode, still got the SBBOD
This has basically rendered our computer nonfunctional and useless!  For example, it took me nearly 30 minutes just to write this message.  Any help will be greatly appreciated!

    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Imac g5 won't boot and cd stuck in drive

    please help -
my imac won't boot up (right now we're assuming a faulty power supply, the original already went and had to be replaced). furthermore, there's a cd i need to get at in the cd drive - is there a manual eject for the 2004 imac g5's?
    thanks!!!

Welcome to Discussions - What model Mac do you have? You can try lying it face down on a soft towel and pressing the eject button as you try to boot. If you have already had the power supply replaced, call Apple immediately and tell them, they should take care of it.

  • Strange pink squares while booting and then kernel panic

    Hello everybody.
This is my boot screen. It began 2 days ago when I tried to update Mac OS to version 10.6.8 v 1.1. When I start my MBP after 2 minutes it hangs. If I try to boot again the history repeats. When I boot from SnowLeo DVD (version 10.6.3) after 3-4 minutes of waiting (spinning wheel spins) I receive kernel panic message. After it I try to boot again and everything works. I tried to repair my HDD with Disk Utility (seems like it was needed to be repaired) but problem still present. I afraid to switch off my Mac. Any suggestions what could it be?
P.S. Sorry for my bad english, I was too lazy to learn it well.

Boot sequence kernel panics before the appearance of the login screen or desktop are almost always hardware related, unless a specific driver was installed or specific hardware was connected which wasn't before.  That it is coupled with a graphics display issue that often is chip related, says it is hardware related, since the only thing that controls the graphics on the boot screen is the graphics chip itself.

If yes, did this issue occur for one specific Excel file or all Excel file? I consider the root is not the MSE.
I suggest you turn on this protection to avoid being attacked.
You could make it to be trusted and turn off protect view:
