W500 card reader problems- with a wrinkle??

My card reader won't  recognize SDHC cards.  I have a W500 (4061-BL2) running Win XP Pro, Service Pack 3.  I installed the latest drivers for the 4-in-1 reader (Ricoh Multi Card Reader driver 3.64.02 which does show up in the "Add/Remove Programs" listing).  Based on reading this forum, I considered KB934428, but, when I tried to install the hotfix, I learned it is not needed with SP3.   (I didn't try to install KB923293 which is the other hotfix frequently mentioned for this problem as it appears to be older than the ...428 hotfix??)
Everything appears to be normal in Device Manager.
When I try to insert a Kingston 8GB SDHC card (that I know has pictures on it as I can see the pictures on my Canon camera), my system does recognize  the card (under "My Computer", it shows up as "SD/MMC (E", but, when I try to access the card, it only says "The disk is not formatted.. Do you want to format now?".
I know there are 20 other forum posts on this problem, but, mine appears  to be somewhat unique with XP SP3.
Like everyone else with this problem, I can read the card just fine with a USB card reader.
Any help will be deeply appreciated!  Love the W500 except for this nagging problem as I am really anxious to use the card reader.

I just fixed a co-workers Ricoh 4-in-1 reader by following these instructions
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70881
It says it's for R61 but worked on W500.
Running Windows XP Pro SP2. I tried the Lenovo Drivers but they didn't work.

  • Card Reader problem with MSI K8T Neo

    Hi,
I have the K8T Neo motherboard, and every once and a while my Atech Flash 9 in 1 card reader  (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-176-003&depa=0) doesn't power up, thus I can't use it.
What's odd is that all my other USB devices work flawlessly.
The only way I'm able to use the card reader again is to power down my computer and then flip the power switch on the psu, then turn it back on, or unplug the reader from the usb header on the motherboard and plug it back in.
I've noticed other people have had similar issues...
Any ideas what causes this, or any ideas on how to fix this?
    Bio Haz

Yes, I had the same hanging problems as well with older BIOS versions then 1.7.
But that isn't the problem I'm talking about, the computer always starts up, it's just a matter if the usb reader will work or not.
Maybe MSI has yet to make a BIOS that is compatible with all card readers.

  • USB card reader problem with T430 laptop (Win 8)

    I have a Thinkpad T430, running Windows 8 with 16G memory.
I have recently encountered problems with a USB card reader. I thought the reader was faulty so I bought a new one, but that one fails as well. It makes no difference which socket it is in.
After being plugged in for a few seconds, the 'drives' the reader sets up start to flash in the 'Computer' window - it seems they are continually being disconnected and reconnected.
Disabling USB 3.0 in the BIOS makes no difference. One card reader is USB 2 and the other is USB 3
Changing the power settings so the USB selective suspend is disabled makes no difference.
I am pretty sure that it was OK a month ago when I last used a card reader (the machine is about 2 months old).
    What is going on?
    Any ideas?
    Thanls,
    Michael

    Ok Mr. Micheal,
One thing you can attempt to do is download the SmartCard Reader Driver for Windows 8 (64-bit) - ThinkPad on the Lenovo website. The path you need to take is listed below.
    1. Go to the Lenovo website (www.lenovo.com)
    2. Select the support link at the top of the page
    3. Your going to see for windows listed select the type of support you need, so select drivers and software
    4. Its going to ask for your machine information so enter in your machine type or your product ID
    5. Scroll down to camera and card reader and open the link
    6. Download SmartCard Reader Driver for Windows 8 (64-bit) - ThinkPad
    7. Follow the set up wizard and one the driver is installed reboot your machine
Please respond once this action is performed and let me know if this happens to resolve your issue. Thank you

  • Hp officejet pro 8600 multi-card reader problem

Have officejet 8600 printer/fax with multi-card reader.  All worked fine when wired to Apple computer before. Went wireless last week...set up router etc. All worked fine till I tried to load an sd camera card in the printer like i had done many times before.  Doesn't recognize the multi-drive...all lights start to flash..tells me i need to turn printer off/on to continue....NEVER does recognize the card reader!...
I remember there was an update from Apple that had to do with printer drivers on Oct.15th....could that be the problem or do I need to set something else because of the wireless setup?
The printer works fine otherwise....it does recognize the wireless connection for straight printing. I haven't tried the fax part yet.

    Hi lincon50
I understand the memory card isn't being recognized since the wireless setup and the apple update.

  • Windows 7 64-bit: Switchable graphics and Ricoh card reader problem

    Hi guys,
Two problems with my laptop. I'm using a T400, previously installed with Windows Vista Business 32-bit.
Switchable graphics worked well until I formatted and installed Windows 7 Pro 64-bit (I got the RTM through MSDNAA). Now, Windows can only detect either the discrete graphics or integrated graphics at one time. When the BIOS was set to switchable graphics and enabling the detection of switchable graphics on Windows, it could only detect the Intel integrated graphics. When I try to switch to High Performance graphics through the Lenovo power manager, the screen flashes once, and the ATi graphics card appears on the device manager with the code 10 error (cannot start device). Also, compared to this image, my power manager window that opens with left-click does not have battery stretch and switchable graphics options. I have to right-click to switch my graphics.
After some tinkering, I managed to activate the graphics card through the BIOS by switching it to discrete graphics only and disabling switchable graphics detection by Windows. Now the device manager shows the ATi card only, the Intel integrated graphics is gone. I understand that it should show both display adapters in the device driver when the ATi card is active: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70495.html#g4
The second problem is with the Ricoh card reader. I managed to install the drivers properly, but the device shows up with a code 12 error (This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use) in the device manager. That error appears on 6 items in the device manager:
    Ricoh Memory Stick controller
    Ricoh SD/MMC Host controller
    Ricoh xD-Picture card controller
Ricoh 1394 OHCI Compliant host controller
Ricoh R/RL/5C476(II) or Compatible CardBus controller
SDA Standard Compliant SD host controller
Additionally, 6 error messages appear during every boot up, which I think is related to these 6 devices:
    ERROR
Resource Conflict - PCI in slot 07
    Bus:15, Device:00, Function: 00 (it ranges from function 00  to 05)
AND disabling the device through device manager results in a BSOD.
I've seen some people post about the Ricoh problem, but didn't have any resolution (at least for those who had the boot up error message too). The switchable graphics problem seems quite common too but in my case it seems like it is working fine EXCEPT for the fact that only one graphics adapter can appear on the device manager at one time and I can't do switching at all. Anyone know if I can somehow solve this? Sorry for the wall of text and two-problems-in-one. I put them together because I don't know if one problem is affecting the other as both problems appeared at around the same time.

As far as the graphics goes it's well accpeted the only way at present to switch is though the bios manually. There is currently no drivers that enable users to switch from within Win7. Know it's a pain but will just have to wait.

  • USB/memory card reader problem,  any help would be great

Hello all, I bought a new memory card reader today and our computer will not recoginize it's there. The reader is a Targus universal 32 in 1 memory card reader/writer and I think the model is TGR-CRD25, it also says USB 2.0. I didn't have any problems with the old reader as far as the machine "seeing" the reader. This new reader does show up in the system profiler but the little power light will not come on and I get a "low power for device" type message when I plug it in. I unplugged the keyboard and plugged in the new reader to the USB port where the keyboard was connected and the light came on on the reader but iphoto was still saying no storage device when I tried to import pictures? Any ideas?

There is very little extra power available once the mouse is hooked to the keyboard. The "real" solution is to get a USB Hub with its own power supply.

  • Memory Card Reader problems

I have seen this problem for a long time on Arch. This was occuring when I used an external SCSI memory card reader, and now I notice the same thing with my new linux box which has an internal 15-in-1 card reader connect to the USB card. It goes like this ...
When I insert the card, my KDE desktop fails to notice it. When I open a terminal and run dmesg, nothing relevant shows up. When I attempt to mount the device, I'm told it doesn't exist. After some passage of time, it will still fail, unless I do a fdisk on that device to see if fdisk sees it. Sometimes it takes a few fdisks to find it, but eventually it seems to find it. At that point I can mount the device. But one thing that has been true in the past as well as the present ... I must issue a fdisk command for that device (and then exit fdisk) before Arch Linux ever sees the device. This has been true since 0.6x Arch, and now true of 0.72 Arch, on two different boxes and with two different card readers.

i had this prob ages ago. was even convinced it was some physical slots that were broke, (rear slots worked fronts didnt )or one particular cardreader (gtech 21-in-1) as it glitched under windows too.
at some point tho, in Arch anyways, the problem went away, and i think now it was more to do with modules and confs and it got solved more by tinkering than knowing what was what definitively. we live and learn

  • Re: Qosmio x770 - memory card reader - problem

    Hi!
I want to know how to use correctly memory card slot. I put into it a memory stick pro duo. The card has been read correctly, but after that I had a huge problem with removing card from the slot. I had to use some tools to did it. What is wrong with this memory card slot (or with me)?

after you've pushed your card in you should hear a click sound - thats when the card is locked in the slot
to remove the card you should push the card even further in until you hear a second click - thats when the card will be released from the slot
if i am correct you tried to remove your card without pushing it in again, so the release was not properly used, thats why it was hard for you to remove it
hope you did not break anything in your card slot ^_^ next time when something like this occurs in your computer, car etc. try to think slower and realize that someone who designed a certain feature probably wouldn't have done it so difficult, so there has to be another solution - one that you are missing :-)
after i bought my nikon d200 i had the same issue removing my battery, when all you had to do is tilt the camera, so graivty pulss it a bit down, then you are able to grab it. what i did is tried to get it out from the top and i nearly took my camera back to the shop to give it back
    good luck !

  • T430s card reader problem

Apologize if this has been answered before, did read many community posts and may have missed it.
I just got a T430s preloaded with Win 8 that I'm deprecating to Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit.  Everything has worked fine except for the Ricoh card reader.
The problem is the same even though the driver was installed in several manners.
With no card in the reader I don't see the Ricoh anywhere in device manager.  When I insert a SD card the laptop makes a "device attached" alert sound & the "Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller" appears as an IDE ATA/ATAPI controller, but the card does not show up in My Computer or Disk drives in device manager.
When the card is removed I get the "device removed" sound & the Ricoh disappears from IDE ATA/ATAPI.
I've updated the system BIOS to the latest version.
Have tried installing the Ricoh driver both manually and with TV Update & Drivers.
Tried the T420 Win 7 driver.
Updated driver with the 'have disk' method.
Edited the T420 .inf file to include the proper hardware ID of my card reader.
Removed and reinserted the card reader.
Tried known good SDHC and non HC cards.
    Can't find a driver on Ricoh's website.
Really don't want to send this back under warranty unless absolutely necessary.
Any thoughts would be most appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I had the same problem. I have a T530 which I re-installed from scratch and could not find the driver for the "Base System Device" which shows up in Device Manager.  Finally, I discovered that the SD driver required is:
    RICOH_SD_DRIVER_6.13.3.4_X64
Go to this page "http://www.odrivers.com/2012/05/sony-vaio-vpceb4e1ewi-driver-win7-64.html" and look for the Ricoh SD Bus Host Adapter Driver.
There is no Installer so go into Device Manager (DEVMGMT.MSC) and look for either (a) Base System Device as an unknown device or (b) Under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, look for the Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller.  Right-click and select Update Driver Software. Then "Browse My Computer for driver software" and point to the path where you expanded the ZIP file you downloaded.
Let me know if this helps.

  • 3000 H210 Card reader problem

I have a 3000 H210 53553PU and the computer doesn't recognize the sd card in the reader.
The drive indicator light come on when I insert the card , however, the card is not available for use.
I would appreciate your input on this issue.
    Thanks, Pops

I have a similar problem with my 3000 H210 53553EU running Vista.  A few weeks ago my USB ports and card reader stopped recognizing my camera flash card and USB flash drives and could not find the new printer I just bought.  I get "unknown device" messages when I plug one in, and I find unknown devices insatalled under the USB section in Device Manager.  The only USB device still working is my mouse.  All the ports worked in the past (with a previous printer) and the card and flash drive work in other machines.  I have tried System Restore and other fixes suggested on the Microsoft forum to no avail.  If you find a fix, please let me know.  There seem to be other users on the MS forum with similar problems.

  • R3000 multi card reader problem

I have a problem with the sd card reader on here that it wants to format the sd card when inserted, I searched the forum for others that were having the problem, and found that I possibly need the sp29788 updated driver for it, so I downloaded it to the laptop, but am still getting the same thing. The card that I am trying to read is a 2gb that I can read with usb multi card reader, but not the one in the laptop. The driver for the multi card reader shows a 8/8/2003 date on it, the driver on the hp website sp29788 shows a 2005 date. When I installed the updated driver for it, the date on the driver still shows as 2003. What next?

  • Graphics card drivers problem with star craft 2!!!! ah!

I have a problem with my new laptop (a Compaq Presario CQ62z-200cto) that I bought for star craft II and I was hoping you guys could help.
This is my computer’s stats. They surpass the recommended settings for Star craft 2 by a little bit.
    2.8 ghz phenom dual core
    2gs ddr3 ram
Ati radeon mobility hd 545v (yes, this card is better than the recommend 3870)
When I first turned on star craft it said:
“Your video card drivers are out of date” and “Starcraft II does not recognize your graphics card”
In addition to this Starcraft II runs relatively poorly. I’m not sure how well it’s supposed to run, but it’s a  laggy even on low-ish settings. I tried to get new drivers from ATI, but they said that if you have a laptop you should get drivers from the manufacturers, not ATI (because HP makes the specific drivers for the computer). ATI supposedly only has “generic” drivers for laptops or something like that. So ,I have to get the latest drivers from hp, which I already have (they were made in April…shesh).
So, I’m stumped it seems like the drivers are holding me back even though I have the hardware for the job, but the drivers I need don’t exist.
Any ideas? Anyone else have this problem?
    Thanks,
    Tim

The "graphics card" on an iMac is built into the motherboard. Therefore the only updates would be through an Apple firmware update.

  • SD Card Reader Problems

Back at the end of December I got my Raspberry Pi in the mail. I was able to plug an SD card into my laptop and it automagically mounted just fine like any other USB device.
Now, here we are a month later, with me wanting to put a new image on the SD card and nothing (except the RPi) can read the SD card. I've tried almost every OS I have access to: Archlinux laptop, same laptop running a Linux Mint live cd, a different laptop running windows, the windows laptop with a Mint live cd.
The output of dmesg (putting SD card in and out):
    [ 1506.915123] usb 1-1.5: new high-speed USB device number 4 using ehci_hcd
[ 1506.951924] hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 5

[ 1508.046632] hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 5
I've also been playing with a different SD card to try and track down the problem. This SD will only be mounted on the second laptop running Windows.
There was a bried moment when the second SD card was able to be mounted in Arch (only after I mounted it in Windows first), but it will not mount again.
    dmesg for second card:
    [ 2378.636569] usb 1-1.5: new high-speed USB device number 11 using ehci_hcd
    [ 2378.747125] scsi8 : usb-storage 1-1.5:1.0

[ 2391.156248] sd 8:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
    Any suggestions?

So I will try reinstalling the driver, but I think I need one for Vista and not XP, right?
Sorry about that, Linda. I edited my post to show the correct driver..

  • USB card reader problems

I'm using a new MacBook Pro with an old USB 2.0 card reader (21-in-1 TDE) - but it keeps unmounting, just long enough for the file transfer to fail. I get a message saying I've disconnected the storage device.
I've changed the cable, tried the reader on a Mac Pro (which worked fine) and the problem doesn't occur with a FireWire reader. Other USB devices seem to work OK. My system is up to date (10.4.8), has 2GB RAM and occurs regardless of trying to download images via Aperture) or simply copying the files from the card in Finder.
Given the hardware works fine on another machine and Firewire gets around the problem, I reckon it's a USB problem - but hardware or software?

I'll try that when I'm back at work in the New Year (I don't have a powered hub here), but I will be surprised if it fixes the problem - after all, the machine provides enough power through its USB ports to run an iPod (complete with a 60GB hard drive), why not a simple card reader?
It would also mean I wouldn't be able to download images at on-site shoots (no mains power).
