W500 is this just a slow laptop full stop?
On my 3rd OS, shipped with Vista 32, installed XP Pro, now on Vista 64, in all cases the w500 still remains the slowest laptop to boot up, against a lower spec Sony, a T60 with the same software installed, and unbeleivably a T41 with 750 Mb of ram. Operationally it also doesnt exactly set the world alight.
i do alot of travelling and whether at the security point, or just to do some quick work, it just takes an age to get started.
i have read that vista does not like 4GB ram for installation, better to use 2GB then add the other chip, how correct is that i dont know.
Just wandering if my expectation on a very expensive machine are too great.
For W500 and T61p, if they both have 3 gig of ram, the W500 will outperform the T61p in regards to CAD rendering, HYSYS calculation, Matlab calculations, etc....
But sometimes, the slow startup time is due to many bloatware that is running in the background and also using unoptimised driver sets.
Startup time isn't particularily reflective of the laptop capability, as many newer laptop drivers are more complex and has more bugs than an old laptop, which may have most of the problems resolved and most of its drivers have undergone numerous revisions.
This is true for any high tech developments, as sometimes you do not know what problems may crawl up until you actually let people use it for a while.
But W500 really should shine under the win 7 program, under Win XP pro and Vista, the W500 with its ATI graphics card driver seems to hold it back.

My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).
The left shift key behaves the same on the laptop keyboard and on an external Apple keyboard.
This just started in last week after 6 months of use. The right shift key and other keys on the keyboard all appear to work correctly.
Suggestions greatly appreciated.I have a solution to this issue now after a discussion with Apple Support. Some where in the last few weeks, there was a change in the key that would do a Show Desktop under the Mission Control settings in the System Preferences. Even though the key sequence that was shown for the Show Desktop setting did not include the Left SHift key, by changing this first to having no key sequence and applying that and then changing it back to the F11 key, the Left SHift key issue that I was having has cleared up.
A second issue that was uncovered was that the SSD had some issues (uncovered when I ran Disk Utility using the Repair Disk key). I had to restart and use the Disk Utility through the Command R sequence to get to the stand alone Disk Utility. The SSD appears to be running better as a result as well.
Hope that this is of use to someone else in the future. -
Upon start up of my laptop I get a APS Daemon.exe system error - MSVCR80.dll is missing. This just started out of the blue. At one point it told me to reinstall ITunes. Is that truly necessary?
I have the same issue after installing the new update and reinstalling iTunes doesn't fix the issue.
I found disabling Apple push (APSDaemon.exe) from the start up will stop the error from appearing, however this will disable wireless syncing. If you don't use it than it shouldn't be an issue.
I'm using a PC so you can disable it using the msconfig command and turning it off in the Startup tab. I don't know if Mac users are experiencing the same issue. Hopefully Apple will fix it in their next update. -
have had my G5 for 2yrs and love it have never had a problem with it but now its a real pain its just to slow when operating software and the internet it was pretty full up as I keep loads of photographs but I transfered about 50GB unto a external hard drive - is there a simplw first aid or clean up procedure that I can peform - remember I have no knowledge of these procedures can someone please help me thanks!!

Whilst there are several things you could do one of the simplest is to ensure that OS X has sufficient space to use your hard disk as Virtual Memory. If you run out of space on your internal hard disk then your iMac will slow right down.
Single click on Macintosh HD choose File menu > Get Info and ensure that the available space is greater than 10% of the total space.
It's also worth going to Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities> Disk Utility. Select Macintosh HD on the left hand pane of the window and choose Repair Disk Permissions.
It may also help to increase your RAM. The best place I know of for RAM supply in Ireland is Crucial. If you post the processor speed of your iMac ( Apple Menu > About this Mac...) we can advise better.

1. You did not get an error message telling you that your iPhoto library was getting full. You got a message telling you that your HD was getting full, right?
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
Your Library has been damaged from being run on an overfull disk.
How much free space on it now? -

first of all i'll try to explain my problem (although my english is quite bad)
We're programming a tool for visualising graph algorithms (df search, strong connected components, transitive reduction etc.) For that, we got a drawing area (derived from JLayeredPane) which contains the Nodes and the Edges of a graph (for all that don't know what a graphs is, just imagine these nodes as numbered circles, and the edges as directed lines from one node to another).
Both parts (Nodes and Edges) are derived from JComponent, because a) need MouseEvents on these Components and b) we need the ability to add them to a container (like JLayeredPane)
An absolute requirement is that you can directly click on the edges (to mark them, or delete them etc)
Another point which needs to be mentioned, the edges maintain a (invisible) polygon which lies around their line, this polygon is sensitive for mouseEvents.
Now there are two main problems:
* all these edges have (due to JComponent) (possibly) huge invisible rectangles (the only thing that really matters is the line from one corner of this rect. to the other) ...so if i got lets say a graph with 10.000 edges, there are a lot of edges that overlap (nearly 10.000 :) ) ... but only the Edge-object on top receives the MouseEvent (but perhaps the user wanted to cklick a edge that lies below the top-edge!) .. at the moment, the program looks at all edges below that which received the MouseEvent and checks wether the 'mouse'click' hits a polygon, If it does, the top edge dispatches the MouseEvent to that edge. (furthermore, due to the depth-order in a Layer of a JLayeredPane, we only need to look at all edges that are really below the egde that received the mouseEvent)
This all works great for 'small' numbers of edges (approximately 1000-2000) but with a rising number of edges this attempt gets slower and slower (it takes 1-3 seconds to evaluate a single mouseclick on a Sun Ultra 5/333)
* the bigger problem is, that if i got 10k+ JComponents in a Container Java gets really slow, just adding these 10k JComps. (to the JLayeredPane) takes some minutes?! Furthermore java consumes up to 200+ MB main memory in this situation.
One solution we are currently thinking about is to implement these edges as 'pure graphics'-objects (for example the Container just draws all edges).. this probably solves problem # 2 but # 1 gets even worse (no depth-order, some more coordinates hassle)
So, i hope someone can give me a hint for this problem or someone has had a similar problem before and has a good solution? (if the problem isnt clear, just ask)I worked on an application once that had a similar structure as yours, but we were only scaling up to about 1000-2000 components. The problem that we identified (and that you have, no doubt, also identified) is that you are searching all of the child components on every hit test/overlap test. What we did was to subdivide out outermost container so that it had a couple of dozen children, each of which then parented some of the original child components: this cut our search space for every hit test dramatically. We had the advantage of having collections of child componenents that we knew would not overlap so our first level containers did not overlap -- you may need your first level containers to overlap, but even with this, you'll still be able to much more quickly identify components in the immediate region that should be checked individuall.

There is no record of it in my i-tunes purchases or my credit card statement but that might only be because I have not updated my credit card details. Should I be worried that my account has been compromised? Does anyone know how I can get through to the right section of Apple to deal with this - all the emails I get say no-reply so I don't have an email address to contact them on.

Safari hangs on new tab and slows switching full screen apps..
Hey guys,having problems with safari,when a new tab is open which displays all the most visited sites,it lags wayyyy toooo much when switching to other full screen apps,this happens only in new tab and while showing visited sites not when another website is open...i have updated to the latest os 10.8.3,and this just started happening a month back,just yesterday safari was hanging with everypage,i did a full reset and then the same problem,please help..i don like to use other web browsers at all..
I agree with everything you said about full screen apps, mission control and launchpad. For apps that made sense to run full screen, they already could under SL. Launchpad is totally unnecessary and Mission Control is a mere shadow of Expose and Spaces.
However, I feel you have not given due credit to Spaces. The point of Spaces is to let one organise logical desktops for different tasks, not just a way to reduce the number of windows on display. For example, I have a Space for software development where I run Xcode and the iPhone simulator, a Firefox window showing perhaps documentation or some other websites pertaining to software development, a Finder window that is opened in the folder with my design docs. I have another Space where I have the remote login sessions, yet another Space with another Firefox window where I do general surfing and emailing. I can switch between these spaces using a keyboard shortcut, which is much quicker than having to lift my hand off the keyboard, move it over to the mouse, move the mouse pointer over the Dock, find the app and click on it, only to find that it has switched to the wrong window of the app.
Without Spaces, organisation of my desktop is disrupted each time I want to switch task, whereas Spaces allows me to drop everything I am doing, go and do something completely different for a while and go back to my exact previous environment. I have a 27" iMac so am not short of screen space but I use Spaces extensively. BTW, switching Spaces using a keyboard shortcut is a lot faster on SL than the equivalent on Lion, thanks to the gratuitous screen animation of the latter. -
I just bought a laptop, trying to download iTunes and it is not downloading.
I've tried several times downloading iTunes, each and every time it tells me there is an "uspecified error". I don't know what the error is because I just bought my laptop today so I do not have any cookies or bad files in database. How can I solve this?

Hi, recently purchased macbook 13", I have problem with sound when connect to my LG Smart tv with sound system. When i change sounds effect on my sound system also LG its all go quiet didn't have this problem with my laptop. Any advise ?
Some progess I see. To be honest, i would not waste your time with trying to connect using wireless.
You are likely to get poor connections and dropping out.
If its working using a cable, then there is no need to bother with giving me the network settings, bu see how it goes, because sometimes giving the TV a static IP address can give better results.
There is an example of a couple of powerline adapters on the diagram below. Just ignore the network switch unless you want to connect other devices which are near to the TV.

I recently transferred my internet service to another state.I have not yet moved my imac, just my pc laptop. I cannot get my airport extreme wireless router to work. The green light stays lit when everything is connected but I can't connect to the internet. Any suggestions?
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results. -
I just bought a new 21" iMac last week and it is just to slow to use. Before it used to take a couple of hours now its just way too long

As I understands it - This has nothing to do with Your iMac - Any Mac would take the same time.
May be OS and support on the Window-PC platform handles this better.
• .avi - is no specific codec (file format) but a container and the codec in this might not be one that iDVD can directly use (encode to .mpeg2 as on DVD disks)
So either it just can't do it - or -
iDVD has to back-encode to an usably codec - THIS IS WHAT I THINK HAS HAPPENED
This back-encoding can take serious time - AND the final result usually is far from Good.
I would
• find out in what codec the .avi file is (I use QuickTime and in this inspector to read what codec .avi contains) (.mov is also a container)
• import it into a program that can transcode to a better codec for iDVD - streamingDV or AIC (I GUESS)
• then use this in iDVD

You need to reopen that case file for your initial problem and get that resolved. That's the first thing.
The second thing (the download times) can easily be checked out while you are at the Apple Store (as a test you do yourself). Find a couple of large apps (like maybe approaching 1 GB) in which you don't have any personal data in them, and delete them from your iPad. Then redownload them and see how long it takes at the Apple Store.
If it's quick and normal at the Apple Store, then you've got so,e problem with the iPad working right with your home WiFi, and you'll have to sort that out. If it's just as slow at the Apple Store, then you can open up case file on that issue while you are still in the Apple Store. -
When I open my Excel/Word 2004, the 'Application Quit Unexpectedly' message appears and I cannot relaunch.

Regarding your suggestion to try the free LibreOffice, at the moment I don't need this, because I have downloaded a one-month trial Japanese Microsoft Office 2011 and can open my current files with that, although I do not want to revise any of my files until either this problem is solved, or I purchase a new MS Office.
Unfortunately there is not many MS Office software in English available here in Japan. I spoke to Microsoft Japan and even though they sell software, they do not sell any English verions of MS Office. Incredible, considering that the company itself is located in the US. They suggested I buy it from Amazon Japan, however Amazon do not have any available at this time and do not know if they will in the future.
Anyway, I have found a company which sells the downloaded English version (no disk). The software is Microsoft Office for Mac Home and Student 2011. I have not purchased it yet. It would take too long and the postage charges would be too high to purchase it from the US.
Hoping you have some good ideas.
